WHO
Earth First! is a network of people and campaigns who fight ecological destruction and the forces driving it. We believe in doing it ourselves rather than relying on governments or industry. Direct action is at the heart of what we do, whether we’re standing in front of a bulldozer, shutting down an opencast mine or ripping up a field of GM crops.

Join us for 5 days of workshops, networking and planning actions at a low impact eco-living camp organised non-hierarchically

WHAT
Planning actions and campaigns, meeting and sharing skills with others who care. Over 80 training workshops plus games and evening fun:
• Learn skills for direct action. Tree Climbing, Orienteering, Security for activists, Legal briefing, Escaping public order situations, street medics – first aid, self defence, Boat blockading using kayaks, radio procedures and rock abseiling.
• Network your campaign against ecological destruction. opencast mining, genetic engineering, agrofuels, dam-building, hunt-sabbing, climate actions, oil pipeline resistance, road stopping, anti-whaling, squatting, rainforest protection.
• Learn about ecology, ecocentric ethics and alternatives to the corporate world of exploitation.
• Practical skills for ecological restoration and sustainable living, field trips and hands-on work.

We are all crew! This is your gathering come prepared to help run the camp and contribute to the programme. Contact us in advance with ideas for workshops, help with organising the gathering, come early to help setup the site or stay on for a couple of days for takedown.

BRING
Bring tent and sleeping bag. You can either cook food for yourself or for £4 per day chip in with collective cooking of delicious vegan organic food. There’ll be quiet sleeping areas, toilets and running water, a children’s space and spaces for workshops and info stalls.
Veggies will provide vegan cake and snacks. Children and young adults welcome with subsidized meals.

Arrive Tues pm. Workshops from Wed am until Sun pm.

Loads of campaigns are taking to the water in defence of the planet, like at Rossport where Shell are trying to lay onshore pipelines and the Great Rebel Raft Regatta at last summers climate camp. This summer’s EF! gathering will be building on these tactics with training in water based actions.

An excursion to visit communities in the North East threatened by an expansion of coal mining on Monday 24th August. Visit beautiful valleys and strong spirited communities and make links for ongoing resistance.

We aim to make the site as accessible as we can please contact us in advance if you have special needs, questions or concerns.

WHERE
The site is near in the Lake District, Cumbria. The nearest train station is Penrith and there is a bus service to the site, there are car and living vehicle spaces outside the camp.

Dogs: We are fortunate this year to be able to accommodate well behaved owners with dogs on leads but think about whether your dog will feel comfortable in workshops. Please call beforehand so we know numbers.

Cost: £20 – £30 according to what you can afford. We are not for profit all extra cash goes to help fund next year. Under 14’s free.

Earth First! Winter Moot – last update

The Earth First! Winter moot is an opportunity for people who feel affiliation with the ideas behind Earth First! to network, discuss and reflect on the ecological direct action movement and to plan for the future. In contrast with the yearly EF! Summer Gathering, which is held outside for around five days, the winter moot is a shorter weekend meeting, inside, less aimed at skill sharing and more at looking where we are at as movement and where we want to be going.

Earth First! is not an organisation, but a banner for non-hierarchical organising and the use of direct action to confront, stop and eventually reverse the forces that are responsible for the destruction of the Earth and its inhabitants.

So, here’s the lowdown on what the Danish people coming over for the EF! Winter Moot will be talking about.

*Copenhagen Climate Summit*
Do we cheer them on, block them in, or close them down?

*When?*

*What?* Danish Klimax activists will kick off a discussion about the movement to stop climate change.
*Why?* The UN talks in Copenhagen this December are supposed to be the place where world leaders agree a new international deal to stop climate change.
But progress so far has been undermined by corporate lobbying and false, market-based solutions. When activists from across Europe hit the streets of Copenhagen, should we be calling on governments to do better, blockading them in until they come up with a good deal, or be saying they are so flawed we should try to close them down?

Most people now agree that we need to do something about climate change. But there isn’t agreement on what. For corporations and most governments its a form of green (or maybe greenwashed) capitalism and before we even get there it will probably be too late. In opposition to this corporate agenda, social movements in the South have proposed ‘climate justice’, a transition to a sustainable world which sees the rich minority who caused climate change pay to put it right, not try and push the costs onto the poor majority.

Within this more progressive agenda proposals range from a ‘green new deal’ of state-led investment for social and environmental goals, to those who argue that only a grassroots anti-capitalism can get us out of this mess. This is the political background to the mobilisation around the Copenhagen climate talks and the strategic and tactical decisions activists are trying to make about it.

This is a chance for activists who are less and more involved in climate campaigning to come together and discuss all these issues. We can also talk about how we mobilise for what may be one of the most important events since the ‘battle’ of Seattle exactly 10 years previously.

The gathering this year will be held at Woolseybridge Farm – a lovely site in Norfolk with lots of trees and a little stream. It’s approximately 1.5 miles NNE of Diss. Diss has regular train services and a wholefood shop. The Grid Reference of the site is TM130819. The post code is IP22 5SY.

The site is easily accessible by public transport, you can get the train either to Diss or Norwich and then catch the bus route no 1 (Simmonds) from Diss to Norwich or vice versa – this route goes right past the site and we’ll be asking the local bus company if they will stop right outside the site on request. Or you could walk or cycle – it’s only 1.5miles away from Diss train station. Please come by public transport if at all possible! .

Friday late afternoon and evening will be a chance to arrive, and for introductions, plus a G8 talk & film, and an Introduction to EF!

We’ll be kicking off early on Saturday morning (9am breakfast) – starting with all sharing the most important reasons why we’ve come to Nottingham, we’ll get on with some practical discussions around the EF! Action Update, the website, and the summer gathering.
From what we’ve all said, we’ll be able in the afternoon to move on to ‘where next?’, plus sharing campaigns we’re involved with & seeing what they need, and getting together locally and regionally with other folk who are there.

On Sunday we’ll move into groups to concretely take the ideas forwards from the Saturday, from the campaigns we’re already working on and what we want to do together. We’ll finish at 4pm, after having shared what we’ve come up with. Hoorah.

What is the Earth First! Summer Gathering?

The Earth First! Summer Gathering is the place where people involved in radical ecological direct action – or those who want to be involved – get together for five days of time and space to talk, walk, share skills, learn, play, rant, find out what’s going on, find out what’s next, live outside, strategise, hang out, incite, laugh and conspire.

The gathering is also a practical example of non-hierarchical low-impact living in action.

We are a diverse community with a wide range of approaches to our action, so there should be plenty to interest and inspire everyone whether you have been active for years or are completely new to it all.

Call for workshops at the Earth First! Summer Gathering 2007

The idea is to have multiple workshop sessions, e.g. four two-hour slots spread over four days building up skills in a particular area, so people can learn the basic skills to actually do the job at other mobilisations, events like the climate camp – or wherever. For example plumbing, electrical skills, medics…and whatever else people want to do… It’s not just about the practical skills but also about getting to know each other and starting to work together.

A national gathering to inspire and train all those opposed to the destruction of our planet

Earth First! is not a cohesive group or campaign, but a convenient banner to work under for people who share similar ideas. The general principles behind the name are non-hierarchical organisation and the use of direct action to stop, and eventually reverse, the forces that are responsible for the destruction of the earth and its inhabitants.

Since 1992 many of the people under this banner have come together at gatherings to meet, socialise, discuss and organise direct action. This year’s gathering will take place in the Peak District. Here, in our first national park, is some of Britain’s most spectacular landscape.

“In the future our generation will be remembered for having the last opportunity to halt mass extinction, unprecedented even by the dinosaurs. Now is the time to gather and form an ecological resistance before the last great forests and life-support systems of the earth disappear forever. There is no turning back it is literally up to you.”

Sessions will cover a range of practical skills and struggles. Those already planned include self-defence, nanotechnology, blockade tactics, Gleneagles G8, navigation, Iceland Dams, action First Aid, indigenous resistance, climbing, ID cards, road and airport expansion, primitive skills, organising actions and campaigns, climate change, and ecological restoration. We’ll put more details up on the website as and when sessions are confirmed.

One day of the gathering will be an away-day out in the Peak District. As well as a chance to explore the local bioregion together, there’ll be practical sessions up in the hills and a visit to Nine Ladies, a direct action camp blocking quarry expansion in the Peak District National Park ( http://pages.zoom.co.uk/~nineladies ).

There will be a reception tent, vegan catering by Anarchist Teapot ( http://www.eco-action.org/teapot ), a café by Veggies ( http://www.veggies.org.uk/ ), a reading library, a womens’ space, and a camping area including a quiet sleeping area. Re-pressed (http://www.re-pressed.org.uk/ ) will be running a stall selling books and pamphlets. Commercial stalls are not welcome, but remember to bring any information about your group, campaign or forthcoming action.

Getting there: The nearest mainline station is Derby. The exact location of the site will be announced a week before the Gathering. For a map and travel details (including trains and buses close to the site), check the website or send a first-class stamped, addressed envelope marked GATHERING MAP to the address below. We will post it back to you so that it arrives on August 10th. Alternatively, check the website from that date. We’ll run pickups from the nearest train station a couple of times a day: ring the phone number for times. Details of any regional transport contacts will be put on the website.

Arriving and leaving: The first sessions start at 1pm on Wednesday 17th August, so aim to arrive by the evening of Tuesday 16th if you want to come to the whole event; the gate will be open from 12 midday. The last session will end on Sunday 21st at 6pm. After dinner there’ll be films and a ceilidh.

What to bring: Come equipped: bring shelter, warm waterproof clothes (just in case), and boots. You’ll need money for the gate and for food from Anarchist Teapot unless you’re catering for yourself. Do photocopy and bring any ‘how to’ guides you think might be useful.

Site crew is everyone who comes along. In order for us to have the gathering, vegetables need to be chopped, young people need to be entertained, washing up needs to be done, the gate tent needs to be staffed and compost toilets need to be maintained. Sometimes this is the best way to meet new people, have great conversations, and learn how to do new things. Come prepared to volunteer. You can sign up for shifts when you get there.

Cost: At the gate, we’ll be asking for Â£10 for every adult (including everyone helping out in any way) to cover the cost of organising the gathering.

Camping: The accommodation is camping only, so come equipped. A women-only camping space will be provided. We aim to be as fully-accessible to all as we can. If you have any special needs, contact us. A limited number of live-in vehicles are welcome: check with us in advance to see if there’s space.

Kids: Children are welcome. Please let us know how many kids are coming and how old they are. There’ll be a kids’ space, and some events for different ages, but you’re still responsible for the children you bring.

Dogs: There is a strict limit on the number of dogs we can have on this site, so please arrange beforehand for friends or relatives to look after your dog. If this is really not possible you must contact us beforehand, as any dogs not already booked will be turned away at the gate. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, and exercised off-site.

Food: The Anarchist Teapot mobile action kitchen will be cooking GM-free vegan food. You can buy their meal tickets for £3.50 a day, or bring your own food to cook and a camping stove.

Cameras and press: This is an action-orientated gathering, not a press event, so if you are coming as a journalist then you are not welcome. Please respect the wishes of some people not to be photographed and leave your camera at home.

Set-up and tat-down: We’ll need some people to help out on site for a few days before and after the gathering. If you can help, phone us on the number below.

Earth First! has no central office, no members, no paid workers, and also no money. Any donations will be appreciated. Make cheques and postal orders payable to “Earth First!”.
