Manitoba Hydro Evicted from Northern Dam Station by Protesters

Protesters have forced employees of Manitoba Hydro out of the Jenpeg generating station in northern Manitoba.

The protesters, from Pimicikamak Cree Nation, delivered an oversized evicted notice on Friday to staff at the station and the employee housing complex, both of which are located on the Nelson River in Pimicikamak territory.

“The building is empty, locked, undamaged and under the Pimicikamak flag,” states a release from the Cree Nation, which is located approximately 525 kilometres by air north of Winnipeg.

A few hydro personnel remain inside the dam itself to monitor the facility. Pimicikamak guarantees the safety and well-being of these people, and ensures that hydro facilities will not be damaged.”

The protesters want compensation for damages caused by flooding from the dam, which opened in 1979.

“The hydro system floods 65 square kilometres of Pimicikamak land and causes severe damage to thousands of kilometres of shoreline,” Chief Cathy Merrick stated in the press release. “Outlying grave sites have been washed away; Pimicikamak people have died as a result of semi-submerged debris from eroding shorelines and unsafe ice conditions caused by hydro.

“The project has turned a once bountiful and intimately known homeland into a dangerous and despoiled power corridor.”

Jenpeg, which Manitoba Hydro uses to control outflows from Lake Winnipeg into the Nelson River system, is located about 20 kilometres from Cross Lake, which is the main Pimicikamak settlement with some 8,000 residents.

“This is our home; we will not let it be trampled,” said Merrick. “This dam has been great for the south but for us it is a man-made catastrophe. Hydro needs to clean up the mess it has created in our homeland. Hydro needs to treat us fairly.”

She said the provincial government has spoken about reconciliation with all hydro-affected peoples, and a “new era” of “partnership” but so far none of that has happened.

The hydro system produces $3.8 million worth of power on its five Nelson River dams every day, according to Merrick, who noted it “has not contributed to ‘the eradication of mass poverty and mass unemployment’ as was contemplated in the 1977 Northern Flood Agreement.

“The NFA says affected people will be dealt with fairly and equitably,” she said, adding, “In many parts of Canada, governments and companies are realizing that everyone benefits when the tremendous wealth and opportunity of the land is shared fairly.”

Pimicikamak’s road map to positive change includes:

  • A public apology from Premier Greg Selinger for past and present harms suffered by all hydro-affected peoples and their lands.
  • A commitment from Manitoba and Manitoba Hydro to engage in a good-faith process to fulfill promises in the NFA, including measures related to community development, environmental mitigation and maximum employment opportunities.
  • A revenue sharing agreement and/or water rental arrangement with Pimicikamak.

“The Pimicikamak people will not leave Jenpeg until Manitoba and Hydro make substantive commitments to follow the course outlined above,” Merrick said.

The chief and council will be meeting with provincial and hydro officials at the Jenpeg station on Friday.

Helicopter rescues fallen climbing activist – climbing partner arrested without reason

On Monday, a French activist fell down from a 8 metre high platform at a forest occupation near the clearcut border of the open cast mine Hambach. A helicopter brought the conscious accident victim to the nearby hospital. Another forest occupant was arrested by the police during the rescue mission and was held at the police station in Düren for several hours without reason. For 3 years, activists have been protesting in the Hambach Forest against Europe’s biggest open cast mine, which is located between Cologne and Aachen.

“Our yearlong experience, tutorials, training sessions and international security standards, show: We are professionals. The security of the activists is our first priority.“, explains Nina Wagner, climbing trainer and forest occupant. The activists now want to clear the case completely and search for failures in the security procedures. It’s the first serious accident since the start of the protest, which is held daily in the forest, elevated from at least 8 metres. “Our activists know, why they do their protest in the top of the trees. We are determined to resist the climate killer brown coal, even at high personal risk.” continues Wagner.

Though the rescue was successful, the activists are very concerned about the accident. “She’s in our thoughts, and we hope that she will recover from her injuries.” says Wagner. After the fall, the occupants reacted quickly and started to immediately perform first aid. While one team took care of the emergency call, another removed the barricades, which are normally in place to prevent an eviction by police forces, to clear the way for the rescue team. In the future, more stringent security measures will be in place in order to avoid another rare incident like this. The victim, which was able to speak directly after the fall, was brought by helicopter to the university hospital in Aachen.

Anti-industrial Sabotage in Southern Quebec in Solidarity with Evicted Algonquin Protesters

October 1st, 2014

by King Ludd and his army of Fenians / Anarchist News

October 1st, 2014

by King Ludd and his army of Fenians / Anarchist News

Brief resume of this communique: A railroad telecom was burned and three residential development panels vandalised in response to an eviction of Native resisters in Gatineau and in solidarity with the 5E3, somewhere in southern K‑bekk.

Full version:

So the other night on September 21, we’ve set fire to a railroad telecomm cable linking Brigham to Sherbrooke (Qc) to the US, thinking about the Algonquins people recently evicted from a resistance camp and detained in Gatineau. We took the time to select a railway bridge in the middle of nowhere near Waterloo, so we’d not have to dig to get to the cables or attract too much attention. Some fuel was dropped through an opening in the steel casing of the cables, then set on fire. Nothing fancy. It worked better as we’d guessed, as a few seconds later it already smelled burning rubber a few meters away. The enclosed air in the conduct apparently turned the fire into something like a blow torch. Kind of easy game to be reproduced elsewhere by others, we told ourselves… so that’s a reason to let others know.

Of course it didn’t cause the whole techno-industrial system to collapse! Society is still pretty much functional today. But you gotta start attacking it somewhere. Though it did feel as if an important nerve deep below society had been severed. And this felt good getting off our asses in the middle of the night for this.

It is noteworthy that this railway line is the exact same on which the tar sands train used to pass, taking the lives of a hundred people last year. It is again used to transport oil from the West to the US, though at much smaller rate. Soon it will be replaced by the equally parasitic and devastating pipelines, unless a serious opposition to it rises out from the current apathy so widespread in southern Quebec these days. As the sheep put their trust in the bureaucrats and the “experts” with all their “moratoriums”, legal challenges and “environmental assessments”, the popular beast is tamed and kept in line, the same line that led us to a disaster last year, and keeps destroying the wild life around…

Hence, as bonus, during the following days, panels for rural residential developments were vandalized, each in the name of prisoners Amélie, Fallon and Carlos imprisoned in Mexico, two of which are from Montreal.

Two panels were spray-painted in Sainte-Etienne-de-Bolton (not very far from that sabotage) where “Ecocide” was written, and a large panel by the highway 10 that ties Montreal to Sherbrooke.

Those gestures are far from the intensity of the attacks those three persons are accused of, but they target another end of the same same social machine that destroys and rapes the living, here as in northern Alberta, Mexico and elsewhere.

We take the opportunity to pass on our shared view on fighting the progress of techno-civilization: This fast-growing type of visual pollution plays a key role in the destruction process paving way to the invasion of techno-industrial society, but also are very worthy alternatives to the classic urban vandalism. There’s no geopolitics of vandalism, what matters being just the sensitivity of the target to the infrastructure behind, and this one is sensitive as fuck. Though as countless graffiti in the City will at least express a critique and give a virtual impression of disorder, at best defame the fascists and the cops and capital; suburban sprawl can be stopped or slowed down in direct result from vandalism against those spectacular outlets of capital (in this case, the gangster construction industry and all its parasites who just wanna pay themselves a yatch with easy money out the sale and destruction of fictionally-owned land, who’re pretty much the same fuckers who pay themselves summer residences here with gentrification money in the city. Get the picture?). We have proof of this, by experience… we have seen major real-estate corporations withdrawing from developments, just because of panels being recursively vandalized. We fought this kind of tactic, no matter how low-scale or boring it may look like, deserves to be brought back in the attack menu, at least as appetizers. So, tons of opportunities for subvertive art at the tip of the civilizational spearhead. A good field for spreading anti-civ memes too!

For all the creatures killed or evicted by the death machine of society that keeps spawling.

For the wild!

Italy: NO TAV Prisoners Claim Responsibility for Rail Sabotage in Court, Reject “Terror” Label

Marcia NoTav

Marcia NoTav

Earth First! Newswire Editor’s Note: The campaign against the building of the Turin-Lyon high speed rail link has been running for 20+ years and regularly produces new arrests as the Italian State tries to suppress resistance. Chiara Zenobi, Niccolò Blasi, Claudio Alberto and Mattia Zanotti were arrested on December 9, 2013, and accused of committing an act of sabotage occurred in May 2013 against the high speed railway (TAV) construction yard of Chiomonte, Val Susa. The charges pressed against them are heavy: attack with purposes of terrorism carried out with lethal and explosive devices, possession of war weapons, damages. Below is an account of their statements to the court.

translated by Act for Freedom Now

Turin, 24th September 2014

From comrades who were in court we learn that Chiara, Claudio, Mattia e Niccolò were smiling and in good spirits during the trial and with their heads held high they claimed their participation in the action of sabotage that took place in May 2013 at the TAV yard in Chiomonte. The comrades dismantled the accusations and theorems that prosecutors built up on a very different reality and rejected the label of ‘terrorism’ attached to practices that belong to the NO TAV resistance, thus getting rid of the jargon and semantics of repression and dominion.

Here are the comrades’ declarations to the court:

Mattia:

I knew Maddalena and Val Clarea before the TAV yard was erected there. In those woods I walked, slept, ate, sang, danced. In those places I experienced precious fragments of life together with friends who are no longer there and whom I carry in my heart.

To those places I went back many times in the course of the years.

In the daylight, in the night, in mornings and evenings; in summer, winter, autumn and spring. I’ve seen those places changing and trees falling down after being cut down to make room for barbed wire. I’ve seen the yard expanding and a piece of wood disappearing, headlights popping up and the army coming over to watch a desolate landscape from the same armoured vehicles that patrol the mountains in Afghanistan.

So I went back again in Val Clarea during the now famous night of May.

Too much was written and said on that night and it’s not up to me, nor is it my interest, to say how the action translates in the grammar of the penal code.

What I can say is that I was there on that night.

That I was not there with the intention of pursuing terror or even worse can be understood by any sensible person who has even a slight idea of the nature of the NO TAV struggle and of the ethical coordinates within which this struggle has been expressing its resistance for twenty years.

That I was there to demonstrate once again my radical hostility to that yard, and if possible to sabotage its functioning, I’m telling you myself.

And if we decided to speak today before the trial enter the tangled forest of phone tapping evidence and counter-evidence it is because we want to reaffirm a simple truth: the intercepted voices are ours.

Prosecutors built up a story on this.

A story where mobile phones become the evidence of the existence of a chain of command, even paramilitary planning, but the truth – as often happens – is much simpler and less bombastic.

A saying in Val Susa has added to the common baggage of the NO TAV struggle for years, and it guides the practical actions of disruption of the yard.

The saying goes: ‘we leave together and come back together’. Which means we go along together in this struggle. Together we leave and together we come back.

No one is left behind. This was the reason for mobile phones on that night, to this purpose were our voices used.

On the contrary to talk about leaders, organization charts, commandos and strategists means to want to cast the shadow of a world that doesn’t belong to us on that particular fact, and to twist our very way of being and conceiving common actions.

As far as I’m concerned, I leave to the enthusiast high speed speculators the sad privilege not to have scruples about others’ lives, and I also leave to them the cult of war, commando and profit at all costs.

We hang on the values of resistance, freedom, friendship and sharing, and from these values we’ll try to gain strength wherever the consequences of our choices lead us.

—Mattia.

Claudio:

In the night between 13th and 14th May I took part in the sabotage of the yard in Maddalena, Chiomonte. Here is revealed the mystery.

I’m not surprised that while attempting to reconstruct the fact investigators use words such as ‘assault, terrorist attack, paramilitary groups, lethal weapons’. Those accustomed to live and defend a highly hierarchized society cannot understand what have been happening in Val Susa in recent years. In order to describe it, they draw from their culture full of bellicose words. It is not my intention to bother you with the reasons why I decided to commit myself to the struggle against the TAV or to explain what the defence of the valley means; I just want to point out that anything connected with war and the army disgusts me.

I understand the dismay of public opinion and its storytellers in the face of the reappearance of an illustrious unknown character, sabotage, after they did their best to bury it under tons of lies.

To the struggle against the high speed train goes the credit of having revised this practice, of having been able to choose when and how to use it and to have managed to make a difference between what’s right and what’s legal.

To the struggle against the high speed train goes the big responsibility of maintaining faith in the hopes that many exploited place in it and of making them taste the savour of revenge.

I take the liberty to send the charges back to the sender. We are accused of having acted to strike at people or at the very least of not taking care of their presence, as if we disregarded others’ lives. If there is someone who expresses such a disregard, they have to be found among the troops exporting peace and democracy all around the world, the same that patrol the yard in Maddalena with zeal and professionalism. As far as the charge of terrorism is concerned I’ve no intention of defending myself. Such a bold charge has been sufficiently dismantled by the solidarity we’ve been receiving since the day of our arrest. If behind this operation there was the attempt, not very well concealed, to put an end to the NO TAV struggle once and for all, I’d say it has miserably failed.

—Claudio.

Niccolò:

The reasons that led me to take part in the struggle in Val Susa are many; the reasons that led me to stay there and continue on this path are even more.

In the middle there is a trajectory of collective growth, public and private meetings, camping and demos, discussions and conflicts. In the middle there is life, everyday life, a life of early starts and sleepless nights, of dry throats on rocky slopes and frugal meals, of small commitments and big emotions.

In this trajectory those who struggle learned the precision of language, to call things for what they are and not according to a formal shell with which they are advertised, like a yard that was a blockhouse and now is becoming a fortress. Words that can give back the emotional content and the impact on one’s life caused by the choices of one’s enemy, the enemy who decided to be involved in this big work. Words dusted off from a lexicon that looked old and instead they are rediscovered in all their power and simplicity in describing one’s actions.

A sagacity of language that I realize not being so widespread in the surrounding world, as I read of improbable ‘commandos’, which according to some reconstruction also proposed by the press would have stormed the yard in the night of 13th May. A word as sad as ever, not only because of its reference to the action of commanding but also because of a certain mercenary hint, an unacceptable one, relating to those who are ready to do anything in order to achieve their goal.

On the contrary those who struggle learned to convey with intelligence the strong and impetuous passions provoked by the many blows taken, like when a friend lost an eye because of teargas or another one was dying.

As for me, Val Clarea has been a friend of mine since 2001, when we used to throw the soil back into the holes dug by bulldozers with bare hands as work proceeded in the yard.

I remember a song echoing between the tents of that year’s camping, one of the many invented on the tune of an old partisan song, just for fun and to give ourselves some courage. The first line went: ‘from the woods of Giaglione united we’ll come down ….’ In recent years these words have been followed by actions on many occasions, and so was it on that night of May, when someone decided to do it with determination, and I was among them. One of the voices behind a telephone is mine. But to linger on personal responsibility in order to praise it or blame it can’t give the idea of a collective feeling matured in the houses of so many families, in the valley and in cities, between a chat and a drink in a bar, in piazzas and streets, in cheerful moments and in critical ones. A feeling that expressed itself in one of the most shouted slogans after our arrest and which describes the real belonging of that action very well: ‘we all were behind those fences…’ A slogan that takes us straight back to a popular meeting held in Bussoleno in May2013, when the whole movement welcomed that action and called it sabotage.

And if we all were behind those fences, a bit of everyone supported us and gave us strength behind these bars. For this reason, even here, whatever the consequences of our actions are we won’t face them alone.

—Niccolò.

Chiara:

In this courtroom you can’t find the words to tell about that night in May.

You use the language of a society accustomed to armies, conquests and oppression.

Military and paramilitary attacks, indiscriminate violence and war weapons belong to the States and their adulators.

We didn’t throw our hearts beyond resignation.

We threw a grain of sand in the clogs of a progress whose only effect is the incessant destruction of the planet we live in.

I was there on that night and it is mine the female voice that was intercepted.

I went through a piece of my life along with all the men and women who have been opposing a devastating idea of the world with an irrevocable no for over twenty years. I’m proud of that and happy with that.

—Chiara.

Near to Cologne RWE, the biggest energy provider of germany runs three open cast mines with an area of 160 km². With an emission of ca. 100 million CO2 per year RWE is the biggest emittent of CO2 in whole Europe. Enough Profit for the highly indepted enterprise, the loss of natural resources for millions of people of the global south

The local consequences of the brown-coal-minig are desastrous. Highly fertile soil gets digged away. Tens of thousands of people get resettled. Important ecosystems like the hambach forest get cut down. To prevent the mines from flooding the groundwater gets pumped down. The negative effects for the agriculture and wetlands can be located even in the netherlands which are ca. 60 km away. The grit and fine dust which are produced by the biggest diggers of the world, which work 24/7 includes even radioactive particles.

There was Resistance against the gigantic project for the whole time of RWEs economic activity since the beginning of 1900. Sometimes bigger sometimes smaller the resistance moreover collapses because of the power RWE develops with lobbyism, corruption and the undercutting of administrations, courts and local social communities.

For about 4 years a constantly growing grassrootsmovement tries to power up the resistance against the power generation of coal on a local and nationwide scale. With constant crystallisation points like the hambach forest occupation and a house project in the area, with climate camps and helping to empower the local resistance movement with supporting citizen initiatives.

Embedded in the climate camp this year a powerful action day took place.

The coal train which transports the coal from the hambach open cast mine to the power plant was blocked two times. On the the first blockade chained themselves to the rails of the coal train which transports the coal of the mine called hambach to the power plant and the second time two people roped down from a bridge above the rails.

Nearly at the same time about 80 people moved the other big mine Garzweiler to block the infrastructure. 2 Diggers were blocked 3 times with lock-on-actions and squattings. From 8 o’clock in the morning to 10 in the evening the drivers of the diggers and the other personal in the mine had no calm minute.

It seems that more and more people want to take responsibility for themselves to protect ecosystems and natural resources and begin to stop the worst effects of climate change with direct actions against fossil infrastructure.

Mobilisation for a big infrastructure blockade simultaneously to the COP21

According to the next COP-meeting in Paris 2015 we want to invite people from all over europe to think about what to do. As we don’t want to have such a big depression after the COPs 2009 in Copenhagen again there is a tendency to organise a big blockade of infrastructure of fossil fuel energy production simultaneously somewhere centrally located in Europe. If you have ideas and want to distribute them you can come to Cologne/Germany from the 3rd to the 5th of octobre. There will be accomodation and board.

Twelve Hour Blockade Against Rare Earth Metal Exploration, Canada

frDSC_0996

frDSC_0996

The 23rd July we stopped the Canadian corporation Tasman Metals’ test drillings for rare earth elements (REE) in Norra Kärr, Sweden. We heard they probably had been securing the place with CCTV-cameras so we decided to drive as fast as possible right into the enemy claimed forest, straight through any alarm system. Then we ran a few kilometers until we found the drilling rig. Using bike-locks we chained our bodies to the nasty machine. We alerted some media with a press release. Then some cops came with people from the corporation in a few hours. They gathered 20 something cops but Tasman decided not to intervene even though we were breaking the law. They didn’t want the extra fuzz from brutal cop-violence. So we could stay at the beautiful site with the ugly machine the whole day talking to journalists and drinking coffee with excited supporters.

We know rare earth mining has been apocalyptic in desert biomes due to all the toxic waste. This mine would be right next to Swedens biggest drinking water reserve, the beautiful lake Vättern. It’s got bright clear water and supports 260 000 people with clean water at the moment, more cities want to plug in! Tasman Metals is hiding its ugly plans to make investors gamble with human and non-human health and we will not allow that!

In solidarity with all people fighting patriarchy and the white mans colonial worldview!

July 7th, 2014 EUGENE—Scores of activists with Cascadia Forest Defenders and Earth First! converged on the Seneca Jones biomass plant this morning to protest the company’s privatization of public lands in the Elliott State Forest and ongoing pollution in West Eugene.

Currently several people have locked themselves to equipment at the plant, effectively blocking the “truck dump” where biomass is loaded into the incinerator. A banner has been dropped off of a tower reading: “Seneca Jones: Privatizing the coast range, polluting West Eugene.”

The activists are bringing attention to Seneca Jones Timber’s role in privatizing the Elliott State Forest. This month Seneca closed on their purchase of 788 acres in the Elliott, called East Hakki Ridge. Co-owner of Seneca Kathy Jones recently expressed the company’s intention to clearcut East Hakki and replace it with Douglas fir plantation.

Cascadia Forest Defender Richard Haley commented, “However Kathy Jones paints it, her company is a bad neighbor everywhere it operates. Here in Eugene, Seneca pollutes. In the Elliott, Seneca clearcuts and puts up ‘no trespassing’ signs in pristine, never before logged forest. East Hakki is no longer a place where locals can go hunt, fish, hike, camp or watch birds. Now it is corporate property.”

Coos Bay citizen science group Coast Range Forest Watch documented Marbled Murrelet nesting behavior in East Hakki Ridge in May. The bird is federally protected under the Endangered Species Act, which prohibits actions that injure or kill threatened species–including destruction of habitat. A month after Marbled Murrelets were found in East Hakki, conservation law organizations filed to sue Seneca Jones in the event of logging in the timber sale. Murrelets were also found in two timber sales purchased by timber company Roseburg Forest Products. Another parcel is up for sale this fall, and the State Land Board is considering privatizing the entire forest.

Conveyor BeltDespite Seneca’s claim of being sustainable, the biomass plant failed its first EPA air pollution test in 2011 but still requested more state funds to offset its production costs. In spite of its high impact on local air quality, Seneca receives 10 million dollars in tax credits from the state of Oregon under the Business Energy Tax Credit Program.

“The plant has had a bad reputation in this community since its opening,” said West Eugene resident Matthew Hawks. “It’s marketing itself as a ‘green’ solution in my neighborhood, but is actually harming the environment around us, especially the air we breathe.”

The plant, which only employs 11 people, releases an estimated 17,900 pounds of air toxins into West Eugene Neighborhoods annually, in addition to the 73,000 pounds released each year from the mill itself. There are three schools within three miles of the Seneca biomass facility.

“While clearcutting and privatization in the Elliott State Forest is done in the name of public schools, this irresponsible company is taking millions of public dollars and impacting the health and safety of school children in their own neighborhood. It feels really twisted,” said Cascadia Forest Defender Cordelia Finley.

The Eugene-based Cascadia Forest Defenders carried out this action with activists from across the continent following an annual Earth First! camp-out in the woods of Southern Oregon, called the Earth First! Round River Rendezvous.
