Big Wedding vs. Big Oil – Shell Petrol Station Blockaded in Activist ‘Wedding’

Around a hundred people showed up in Ludlow to celebrate this very special ‘wedding’ and take a little direct action at the same time. The ‘bride’ and ‘groom’ along with the assembled friends and family wore black, green and purple to symbolise our resistance. The forecourt was blocked off with banners and the pumps were switched off and locked up. Hymns were sungs (Dancing on the Ruins of Multinational Corporations and the Diggers Song). Veggies served cake and tea. A hand full of cops turned up to enjoy the ceremony and take some photos.

Press Release: 19th September 2008; 12 noon

Ludlow, Shropshire: At noon today, on the forecourt of a Shropshire Shell petrol station, a Leeds couple will tie the knot, supported by around 100 friends and family forming a blockade of the petrol station. Max Gastone and Cath Muller’s ceremony in Ludlow is a protest against the ecological and social damage caused by Shell (and the continued use of fossil fuels) and also a commitment to creating a different world and a celebration of the power of community and resistance.

Shell has a horrific record of causing environmental damage and human devastation worldwide2, most famously in Nigeria3. But today the wedding party is specifically taking action in solidarity with the people of Rossport, Ireland, where Shell is trying to lay a dangerously high pressure gas pipeline, despite massive local and international opposition4. Local people have had their land compulsorily purchased and many have been beaten and imprisoned for resisting the destruction of national forest, peatland and ecologically precious mudflats – which could be avoided by building the refinery at sea.

Banners reading ‘Give us a wedding present – use your bike’ and ‘Celebrating a future without exploitation’ will be hung from the station. The wedding will include music, readings, a teach-in about the situation in Ireland and a ceremonial action against the petrol company. Cars are most definitely not invited!

What’s Wrong With Shell Leaflet Text

You can be sure of Shell to have only one interest – MONEY- making profits from whomever and whatever they can. Over the hundred years of its existence, Shell has been at the forefront of human, animal and ecological abuse.

Shell in Mayo, Ireland

Since 2000 the people of Erris (on Ireland’s remote northwest coast) have been resisting Shell’s plans for an on-land refinery, served by a terrifyingly dangerous high pressure gas pipeline. Their land has been compulsorily purchased by the Irish government and they have been beaten and imprisoned. The government is letting Shell extract the gas for free, destroying national forest, peatland and ecologically precious mudflats to do it. The Irish people will not see a penny from the sale of their natural resources. A local headteacher is currently on hunger-strike and her husband will take over if she dies. And all because it would cost Shell two weeks’ worth of profit to build the refinery at sea.

Shell in the Niger Delta

In 1993, having had villages destroyed by the laying of pipelines, farmland and rivers polluted by oil spills and air polluted by gas-flaring, the Ogoni people of Nigeria forced Shell virtually to abandon their land through peaceful protest. Shell provides nearly half of Nigeria’s foreign income and of its military revenue. In 1994, after meeting with Shell, the Nigerian government announced “ruthless military operations.” Shell supplied the guns. Dozens of villages were destroyed, hundreds of people were massacred. Shell offered to secure the release of nine key campaigners (including Nobel prize-winner Ken Saro Wiwa), if they called off the global protests which had erupted. They did not, and were hung in November 1995. The peoples of the Niger Delta continue to resist.

But it’s not just Shell…
BP, Total, ExxonMobil, Elf and Esso all have Nigerian interests.

Total & Texaco’s operations in Burma support the military dictatorship, which uses slave labour to clear rainforest for oil extraction in return.

ExxonMobil & Chevron support the dictatorship in Chad and opened a pipeline from there through Cameroon’s pristine rainforest in 2003. This has opened up the forest and its communities to illegal logging and poaching and the influx of a largely male workforce has introduced diseases, including widespread HIV infections. Human rights abuses have increased in both countries with the flow of oil money.

BP invaded Australian aboriginal land and has also supported the Columbian security forces to get rid of opposition to its destruction of the Amazon.

Texaco is also not averse to mass Amazonian devastation and forcing out indigenous peoples, embargoing Ecuador in the ’70s until the government gave in to all its demands.

Now that the ice is receding due to global warming, all the companies are turning their gaze on the Arctic Wildlife refuge in Alaska and other opportunities that will arise in the Arctic.

All these companies profit from our defence of their oil-fields in Iraq and from the the scramble for control of the gas supply line through Georgia and Azerbaijan – many more wars will be fought over resources and there will always be an excuse of sovereignty or democracy to back up the aggressors.

Why do we let this happen?

We are paying these companies to fuel our addiction to fossil fuels. But we are hurting ourselves too:

9 people are killed on the roads every day.

1 in 10 British children now has asthma.

Our sedentary lives have contributed to a massive rise in obesity.

Motor vehicles burn half the world’s fossil fuels and climate chaos due to carbon emissions is beginning in the UK. As flooding and storms take their toll, we are feeling the effect directly.
Our collective psyche must be damaged if we can accept murder, torture, pollution and the destruction of the planet on which we depend – just to carry on our comfortable lifestyle.
We have allowed ourselves to become utterly dependent on fossil fuels for everything – our heating, food, textiles, power, movement, entertainment, healthcare. We are completely at the mercy of global money markets, corporations and rapidly decreasing natural resources.

There are positive, creative alternatives

Today we are celebrating the future and the power of community, love and resistance. Two of us are getting married on the forecourt of this Shell petrol station to symbolise our commitment to creating a different world, based on equality and co-operation:

where people give according to ability and receive according to their need

where work is fulfilling and creativity encouraged

where there are no hierarchies or authoritarian politics

where other beings and the earth are valued and respected in their own right rather than abused,
hunted, polluted and exploited for fun or greed

Where there is no discrimination and everyone has an equal say in the decisions which affect them

Social Alternatives

This is anarchism and we believe it is the best way out of the problems currently facing society and the planet. Non-hierarchical societies have always existed, although the remaining few are under threat from the ever-hungry capitalist system. Anti-authoritarian and community resistance is as old as time and the concept of ‘anarchism’ (no hierarchy) has been around for 150 years. An ever-growing community is learning from all this history and putting ideas into practice – we invite you to explore this further.

This wedding is an expression of the power of community. It is bringing together a diverse set of people in a celebration of the future we are building.

Practical Alternatives

Anarchist & non-anarchist groups all over the country (and the world) are showing how communities can take control of their land, their food and their lives and protect the earth for our future. Community-supported agriculture projects, food co-ops, shared vehicles, bike training, Local Exchange Training Schemes, climate cafe discussion/action groups, alternative energy co-ops, permaculture, Holistic Management, housing & worker co-ops, Transition Towns – the projects and the ideas are growing and multiplying.

We do not believe that reform will ever succeed in changing a system fundamentally committed to the abuse of humans, animals and the planet – if not in Ludlow, then elsewhere in the world, hidden but still in our name. All of us must change the way we think, live and love.

A broad movement of campaigners and organizations is calling on everybody to join action against excessive surveillance by governments and businesses. On 11 October 2008, concerned people in many countries will take to the streets, the motto being “Freedom not fear 2008”. Peaceful and creative action, from protest marches to parties, will take place in many capital cities.

Surveillance mania is spreading. Governments and businesses register, monitor and control our behaviour ever more thoroughly. No matter what we do, who we phone and talk to, where we go, whom we are friends with, what our interests are, which groups we participate in – “big brother” government and “little brothers” in business know it more and more thoroughly. The resulting lack of privacy and confidentiality is putting at risk the freedom of confession, the freedom of speech as well as the work of doctors, helplines, lawyers and journalists.

The manifold agenda of security sector reform encompasses the convergence of police, intelligence agencies and the military, threatening to melt down the division and balance of powers. Using methods of mass surveillance, the borderless cooperation of the military, intelligence services and police authorities is leading towards the construction of “Fortresses” in Europe and on other continents, directed against refugees and different-looking people but also affecting, for example, political activists, the poor and under-priviledged, and sports fans.

People who constantly feel watched and under surveillance cannot freely and courageously stand up for their rights and for a just society. Mass surveillance is thereby threatening the fabric of a democratic and open society. Mass surveillance is also endangering the work and commitment of civil society organizations.

Surveillance, distrust and fear are gradually transforming our society into one of uncritical consumers who have “nothing to hide” and – in a vain attempt to achieve total security – are prepared to give up their freedoms. We do not want to live in such a society!

We believe the respect for our privacy to be an important part of our human dignity. A free and open society cannot exist without unconditionally private spaces and communications.

The increasing electronic registration and surveillance of the entire population does not make us any safer from crime, costs millions of Euros and puts the privacy of innocent citizens at risk. Under the reign of fear and blind actionism, targeted and sustained security measures fall by the wayside, as well as tackling peoples’ actual daily problems such as unemployment and poverty.

In order to protest against security mania and excessive surveillance we will take to the streets in capital cities in many countries on 11 October 2008. We call on everybody to join our peaceful protest. Politicians are to see that we are willing to take to the streets for the protection of our liberties!

There are plans for a demo with music and noise at New Scotland Yard. Are others elsewhere up for doing demos elsewhere in the UK at other police stations?

Vehicle spy-cam data to be held for five years

Authorities will store details of car journeys surveilled by the new national Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system for five years, the Home Office has revealed.

Senior police officer had said the data on millions of vehicles would only be kept for two years, the Guardian reports. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is examining a complaint by Privacy International over the extended retention period. The privacy advocacy group described it as “unnecessary and disproportionate”.

The ICO said: “Prolonged retention would need to be clearly justified based on continuing value not on the mere chance it may come in useful.”

The ANPR system, headquartered in Hendon, north London, will be fully operational in the new year. Half of English and Welsh police are already supplying it with data from their upgraded CCTV networks.

Forces are being encouraged to “fully and strategically exploit” its potential for tracking suspects and vehicles by the Association of Chief Police Officers. It’s envisaged that ANPR will be used as part of “mainstream policing”, ranging from clamping down on uninsured drivers to counter-terror operations.

Campaigners have called for the government to more clearly define which other agencies will be allowed to interrogate the database and for what reasons.

Climate change is the biggest threat facing us, and burning coal is the biggest historical cause of climate change. Every day more coal is burned, yet industry and government seem intent on burning even more.

Announcement – ‘Leave it in the ground’ national meeting

‘Leave it in the ground’ is the slogan of a new network for groups taking action opposing new coal developments in the UK, including the 30+ planned opencast sites and seven new coal-fired power stations. Added to those already operating, and the coal import and transport facilities, these projects represent a massive threat to our ability to cut greenhouse gas emissions to safe levels, and would be a disaster for the climate as well as for local areas.

The first ‘Leave it in the ground’ meeting will be held at the Yard Theatre, 41 Old Birley
Street, Hulme, Manchester M15 5RF, on 11 and 12 October.

The network plans to be a way for groups to share skills and experience in different areas and to encourage collaboration on common goals. It is a loose network of equals, and is not affiliated to any political party or NGO.

The proposed agenda for this meeting includes:

Saturday 11th

§ Introduction to the UK coal industry
§ Updates on opposition to coal developments in the UK, including the campaigns against the Ffos-y-Fran (near Merthyr Tydfil) and Lodge House (Derbyshire) opencast sites, the 2008 Climate Camp and the proposed Kingsnorth coal-fired power station blockade.
§ Discussing climate change solutions, including the importance of a socially just transition to a low-carbon economy.
§ Thinking about how our network will function, its decision-making structure, name and communications
§ Planning initial events and strategy for the network
§ Regional networking between groups

§ Further discussions on climate change, climate justice and international networking

If you can only make one day of the meeting, please try to come on Saturday. We will aim to start at 10:00 and to finish by 18:00 to allow for travel. The meeting will free, lunch and evening meal on Saturday and lunch on Sunday will be available for donations.

If you would like to attend, please register by emailing info@leaveitintheground.org.uk, with ‘meeting’ in the subject line, stating how many of your group wish to attend, any special dietary or access requirements and whether you want accommodation for Saturday night. Free accommodation will probably be ‘crashpad’ only, but we can provide details of nearby hotels etc.

The venue is about ten minutes walk from Manchester Oxford Road station, and is served by number 54 and 86 buses, with many others serving the nearby Stretford road. 1) CAMP FOR CLIMATE ACTION, KINGSNORTH, KENT, 3-11.08.08
From the Heathrow Conference to the Caravan, from the workshops to beautiful camp life, from the GRRR pirates to the fence breachers to the bail breakers, and the flurry of affinity group actions before, during and after the camp, the 2008 Camp for Climate Action was a roaring success. We outsmarted 26 police forces to run the biggest climate camp ever. We covered the river in boats, filled the streets with people, covered the power station gates with banners and hit at least eight other targets with autonomous actions. We flooded the national, local and independent media with our stories and messages. E.ON and the Government threw everything they could at us, and they still couldn’t hold us back. Actions, in no particular order, included: an office invasion of mining company BHP Bilton, taking over an incinerator site in Newhaven, a blockade of Cargill over its rainforest destruction and land-grabbing, a pro-vegan roof occupation and banner drop at Smithfield Meat Market, a protest at US air base Mildenhall to highlight military CO2 emissions, a banner drop from an electricity pylon, a naked protest at DBERR, the world’s smallest protesters climbing E.ON’s smokestack (at Legoland), actions at Royal Bank of Scotland (not once but twice – students do a die-in and Rising Tiders bust out the superglue), a demo at Longannet power station in Fife, a multi-pronged attack on Gatwick by Plane Stupid, the shutting down of the South’s biggest biofuel storage facility, and in
a single day of mayhem in the City, the Climate Caravan targeted RBS and the PR firms for Shell, BAA & E.ON.

2) DERBYSHIRE COAL MINE EVICTED, 14.08.08
The squat in Derbyshire, a protest on the site of a proposed new open-cast coal mine, came to end with the eviction of the remaining two protesters, who had resolutely resisted attempts to clear the site by furiously digging for victory. All three US Climate Camps have now wound down, with action highlights including the Southeast Climate Convergence occupying a nuclear facility in Virginia, the Billionaires for Coal striking Bank of America 4 times in 3 days and a protest at NW Natural Gas following the West Coast Convergence. 4) SAVING ICELAND CAMP, JULY/AUGUST
Saving Iceland’s fourth action camp is now over but the fight goes on. The three-week camp was at Hellisheiði, where Reykjavík Energy is expanding their geothermal power plant, first of all to supply energy to aluminium smelters. Actions included: work on the Century Aluminum’s existing smelter as well as a steel factory were blockaded, holding up a shift
change for several hours. A Reykjavik Energy geothermal drill site at Hellisheidi, being built for Century, was completely shut down for a day as activists locked to machines, climbed the drill and occupied the power control room. The national power company Landsvirkjun had it’s office invaded, and it’s CEO Fridrik Sophusson had his home visited. Saving Iceland nailed an eviction notice to his door. www.savingiceland.org

5) AIRPORT OCCUPATION, GERMANY, ONGOING
In Germany climate activists have been squatting a woodland since the beginning of June to stop the construction of yet another new runway for the already massive Frankfurt airport. The camp continues to grow with over 30 people living on site and has the support of the community. Demos and actions are being organised together with local residents’ groups
against airport expansion. Amazing treehouses, walkways and funky ground shelters have been constructed to make life pleasant in the woods and to resist eviction as long as possible. People are welcome to join in. www.waldbesetzung.blogsport.de

6) STICKING IT TO THE PM, LONDON, 22.07.08
On 22nd July a Plane Stupid campaigner superglued himself to Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 10 Downing Street. He’d been invited to receive an award for protesting, so promptly decided to carry on in that vain! Whilst asking Gordon about refusing to meet West London
residents opposed to the construction of a third runway at Heathrow, the intrepid protester put his superglue covered hand onto Brown’s polyester suit. When Brown went to turn away he found he was stuck and for once had no option but to listen. www.planestupid.com

7) 32 4x4s DISARMED, OXFORD, 18.07.08
32 SUV owners woke up in Oxford on 18th July to discover that their environmentally destructive vehicles had been disabled using the ‘mung bean trick’ to let down their tires.

High street banks are making millions by providing the financial fuel that drives the expansion of coal extraction and combustion. This report examines the role in the last two years of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), HSBC and Barclays in providing and arranging the financial means to the coal industry to extract and burn vast quantities of coal. The report reveals that RBS has helped lend more money to the coal industry, in more deals, than any other major UK bank. www.carbonweb.org

The gathering this year will be held at Woolseybridge Farm – a lovely site in Norfolk with lots of trees and a little stream. It’s approximately 1.5 miles NNE of Diss. Diss has regular train services and a wholefood shop. The Grid Reference of the site is TM130819. The post code is IP22 5SY.

The site is easily accessible by public transport, you can get the train either to Diss or Norwich and then catch the bus route no 1 (Simmonds) from Diss to Norwich or vice versa – this route goes right past the site and we’ll be asking the local bus company if they will stop right outside the site on request. Or you could walk or cycle – it’s only 1.5miles away from Diss train station. Please come by public transport if at all possible! .
We will run pick-ups from the train station for anybody who can’t use the bus service or for larger groups of people. If you need a lift please let us know well in advance (and not in the middle of the night, when you’re at a train station somewhere!). Ring the Gathering mobile on 07789 331857

This year’s programme focusses on info and planning for actions, direct action skills as well as spaces to discuss how we can respond to and deal with the widening ecological, economic and societal crises. We hope there’s something for everyone.

During the next 2 weeks, the Solitaire (the biggest pipe laying ship in the world) is set to begin illegally constructing the offshore section of the pipeline. It is believed that the Solitaire is on a pretty tight schedule & booked up for the next 2 years, so ANY disruption provides us with a real opportunity to delay the project significantly.

Although local resistance has been ongoing, the police and a hired security force have meant it is incredibly difficult. A few weeks ago 13 people were arrested in Glengad (1 man remains in hospital). However the police are now just escorting people from the site and not arresting people.

Therefore there is a real need for clever actions to help delay current construction at the landfall area in Glengad and the planned offshore pipe laying. The local people are calling for your assistance at this time.

It is expected that once the off-shore pipe laying is done, there will be another quiet period for several months before construction is due on the onshore section possibly next spring or summer, so NOW IS THE TIME TO COME!

Leave it in the ground banner dropped above roadway

Campaigners battling plans for an open cast mine on the edge of Telford today unfurled banners across one of Shropshire’s busiest roads. Members of Wrekin Stop War and Wrekin Anarchist Group are bidding to catch the attention of motorists travelling on the M54 past Telford and are calling for them to join their protests.

Banners were dropped from the bridge crossing the motorway at Arleston reading “Coal: Leave It in the Ground”, referring to UK Coal’s proposals to create an open cast mine in the New Works area near the Ercall.

Elsewhere, banners proclaiming Telford as “Birthplace of Industry/Womb of Climate Change” were hung from bridges crossing the motorway at the Ercall and Castle Farm Interchange.

It was a difficult decision for us this year as we all wanted to be at Kingsnorth but thought the week of the Climate Camp was a good time to campaign on the threat of open-cast locally.

As some of our collective also felt uneasy about the emissions generated by those travelling to the Kent, they decided to stay at home and take local direct action, whilst others are on site at Kingsnorth and fighting the good fight with the West Midlands neighbourhood.

This action was the first of a number we have planned for the week of Climate Camp and hope that others will be up on Indymedia soon. The banner drop certainly generated a lot of local interest and, along with the wider issue of climate change, has been discussed at length on local web forums. Unfortunately, some of these discussions have become a bit bogged down with discussions over the nature of anarchy but hey ho, it’s brought a variety of issues into a local forum that might not otherwise have been discussed!

For anyone not familiar with the area, ‘Birthplace of Industry’ is Telford’s tourist slogan (yes, that’s right, they use this to attract people to the town!) Ironbridge (in Telford) is seen as the home of the Industrial Revolution (although there is some debate in this regard) and has been designated a World Heritage Site. This is despite the fact that Wrekin, a nearby hill and forest (part of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) would be a far more attractive symbol for our borough.

The proposed open-cast site is in the New Works area, which adjoins the Ercall (the Wrekin’s sister hill). This is an area of ancient woodland with a huge diversity of plant and animal life, as well as ancient burial sites.

Some of our collective recently took part in direct action on open-cast in Wales and we have recently made contact with a group in Derbyshire too.

Welcome to the August 2008 edition of Spirit of Freedom. As people will soon see, ELP’s prisoner lists have grown yet again. If we exclude the Geek anarchist, Vaggelis Botzatzis, and the two Americans Richard Sills and Michael Sykes (all of whom are listed by ELP as ‘Other Prisoners’), there are now 40 listed animal & earth liberation prisoners in Europe & America.
There are also a number of non-listed prisoners, who are not listed either by their own choice, or because they betrayed their fellow activists and became informants. And remember these numbers do not include those people who are either under House Arrest or on Bail pending Trial. Nor do they include the activists whose locations are currently unknown and who are described by the police as “on the run”. Seeing so many good people removed from their families & loved ones for merely acting out of compassion and a desire to stop environmental destruction and animal abuse is heartbreaking.
Some of the prisoners ELP lists are very well known, others are less well known. However ALL of them deserve our love and support. ALL of the listed prisoners welcome letters of support. Even if it’s just a card saying “Hi. I’m thinking of you”. So please, no matter where you are in the world, support the eco-prisoners. And no compromise in defence of Mother Earth.

The Lecce Five have been charged with “subversive association” accused of damaging Esso petrol pumps to oppose the War on Iraq; sabotaging the cash machines of a bank which funds an immigration centre; and targeting the multinational company Benetton in support of Mapuche land rights activists in Chile. All of the defendants are currently either under house arrest or released on bail.

Serving 15 years for accidentally killing a neo-nazi whilst defending himself. (Tomasz is a vegetarian).

Vaggelis Botzatzis, Komotini Juridical Prison (“Dikastikes Fylakes Komotinis”), T.K. 69100, Greece. On remand accused of setting fire to two company cars owned by a energy/power company. It is believed that the person or persons unknown who carried out the arson did so in protest at the destruction of the natural environment and in support of two workers who died at the power plant. Vaggelis is also accused of setting fire to a bank and starting a fire inside a car yard. (Meat Eater).

Richard Sills (Address Unknown, USA). Serving 15 months for bomb hoaxing a University saying they would be targeted by the ALF if they didn’t stop their animal experiments. (Diet unknown).

Michael W. Sykes, 100 East 2nd St, Monroe, Michigan 48161, USA. Youth held on remand accused of anti-sprawl arsons, criminal damage, spray-painting an anarchist sign and burning the American flag. (Diet unknown)

Serving Life for killing, in self-defence, a stalker who had broken into her home. Before her imprisonment Fran was an eco, animal & anti-nuke campaigner. (Fran is a vegan).

MOVE
MOVE is an eco-revolutionary group who carried out protests in defence of all life. All move prisoners describe themselves as vegetarians. There are currently eight MOVE activists in prison each serving 100 years after been framed for the murder of a cop in 1979. 9th defendant, Merle Africa, died in prison in 1998.

Mumia Abu Jamal, (AM8335), SCI Greene, 175 Progress Drive, Waynesburg PA 15370, USA. In 1981 Mumia, former Black Panther and vocal supporter of MOVE, was framed for the murder of a cop. He was originally sentenced to death but is currently awaiting re-sentencing following a court hearing in 2001.
