Eviction of protest camp against Very High Voltage (MAT) power lines, Catalonia

24/3/2010

24/3/2010
The camp was evicted from 7am; the special climbing eviction unit were finished by 14:30. Various police squads were deployed to keep everyone away from the eviction; when one person refused to give their ID, they were held until 18:00. The occupiers all have to return to court on May 31 in Santa Coloma de Farners. At 20h there was a solidarity demo in Girona of about 100 people in the Plaça Catalunya.

With everyone who’s supported this fight, it’s not yet over! The fight against major infrastructure that capitalism imposes on us continues. Against this model of society, against “progress” at all costs, against the MAT and down with capitalism!

Demo at the Danish Embassy on Sloane Street, Monday 15th March 2010, in solidarity with the COP15 climate prisoners.

This morning 15 climate activists protested outside the Danish Embassy, Sloane Street, West London, in solidarity with Tash and Noah, the first two protesters from the COP15 summit to go on trial. See video of the protest.

During the Copenhagen summit, over 2000 people were detained without cause. 7 will be going on trial, and the first trials are on Tuuesday 16th and Thursday 18th. All those detained durng the summit were forced to sit in the ‘herring-bone’ lines, hands tied behind their backs, and denied toilet breaks, food and water.

The protest this morning lasted about an hour, and the police kept turning up, increasing from a couple of bobbies to as many as there were protesters by the end. They asked for a liason, but the protesters just chanted ‘Drop the charges’ in their faces. The protesters began by holding a banner reading ‘Drop the Charges’ in front of the Embassy entrance, and then sat down in the street in a ‘herring-bone’ line.

While Tash and Noah are facing serious charges, something like conspiracy to cause civil unrest, they are not the first activists to be on trial for Cop15. There have already been more than seven trials, luckily most of them ending in acquittal or minor convictions with only one three month prison sentence.

All the charged deserve our solidarity!

Lappersfort Forest Evicted

Lappersfort treesLappersfort graffiti5th March –
Yesterday morning the Brugge police force emptied Lappersfort Forest. All environmental activists who had chained themselves into tree houses and tunnels have been taken. Five policemen have been injured.
The threatened land is the property of Fabricom and has been fully occupied since September 2008. Peace talks with the owners and a judge over the 3.2 hectares of land (Which has plans to be turned into industry and office ground) had been entered into to reach an agreement but had failed.

The activists chained themselves to the trees in the morning and chanted slogans as large numbers of police mobilised and entered the forest. 30 police constables cordoned off the area while 20 others – with specialist contractors – worked to remove the activists.

According to a spokesman for the Brugge police force 25 people have been obtained. Because some of the activists did not want to give their identities, immigration control has become involved. One activist has been taken to a prison on an immigration matter.
The activists who gave their identities will be released after 12 hours.
A large number of trees were cut down in a short space of time. The tree houses were also removed. According to the police, by yesterday evening 80% of the area to be ‘developed’ had been laid flat.

“Fabricom claim the social importance of serving the community and try to give themselves a green image” Says forest activist Robin “What they do in reality is put profits before nature and the population, of India the Amazon Rainforests and in Belgium. We find the increase of this type of mega-multinational particularly upsetting. They claim to be green, but where we see a forest, they see purely a speculation ground.”

4.3.2010
The eviction of the Lappersfort has started. At 7h55 today, the police entered the forest. Police is all over the forest and a cherry-picker is in front of the forest.

13 people have been arrested while 1 remains locked on to what seems to be a 400kg concrete block. 1 of the arrested occupiers has been transported to jail as they are believed to either be involved in an ongoing investigation or be illegal in the EU.

The eviction is almost ended. One activist is still in the fortress. The lock-on team is busy with opening the lock-on. It seems to be a 400kg armed, extra-strong concrete.

There is a solidarity action on the corner where 4 people pushed through the police lines but were immediately arrested.

Background at http://lappersfort.freehostia.com/en/background.htm

Lappersfort Forest Occupation expected to be evicted this week!

Updates Thursday 4th: the eviction has begun since this morning; it is still unclear how far the eviction is going, and if there are still people present to resist. this night at 8pm manifestation in Bruges, at ‘t Zand.

Updates Thursday 4th: the eviction has begun since this morning; it is still unclear how far the eviction is going, and if there are still people present to resist. this night at 8pm manifestation in Bruges, at ‘t Zand. Wednesday 3rd: yesterday, the federal police was seen in the neighbourhood of the Lappersforest. Several people were chased when they wanted to leave or enter the forest. There is constant patrolling in the surrounding of the forest. At this moment (Wednesday 8:00), everything seems quiet in the forest.

The eviction is still expected to happen this week.

According to a very reliable source, the occupied part of the Lappersforest will be cut down this week. We don’t know the exact date (yet), but the eviction and chopping will probably start at the beginning of the week. (This week!) Another indication is the fact that police have visited the forest three times last week.

What can you do?
– come to the forest as soon as possible
– prepare solidarity actions
– prepare actions at branch offices of GDF Suez, Fabricom, Electrabel…
– send displeased reactions to press and other media.

If you come to join the eviction resistance, bring a raincoat, warm clothes, a sleeping bag and maybe some blankets.

If you can’t make it to the inside of the forest, come to the green bridge of Steenbrugge (on the road from Oostkamp to Bruges), where there will be protest actions from the very start of the eviction. At night we gather at 8 pm on ‘t Zand in Bruges, for a demonstration.

No compromise in defence of the Earth!

Fossil Fools Day 2010

Climate change is no laughing matter – but that doesn’t mean we can’t confront the Fossil Fuel Empire with subversive humour.

WHAT: Direct actions, practical jokes and throwing a spanner in the works to stop the fossil fools.
WHERE: Your street, town or city.
WHEN: April 1st, 2010.

FFD graphic - bigClimate change is no laughing matter – but that doesn’t mean we can’t confront the Fossil Fuel Empire with subversive humour.

WHAT: Direct actions, practical jokes and throwing a spanner in the works to stop the fossil fools.
WHERE: Your street, town or city.
WHEN: April 1st, 2010.

Last December in Copenhagen, the politicians sold us out to the fossil fools, corporate lobbyists and big banks. Now we’re left with “green capitalism,” a deeply unjust carbon market and continued assaults on our communities and ecosystems. If we’re going to stop climate chaos, the only real solution is to keep fossil fuels in the ground.

The stakes couldn’t be higher: destabilisation of the global climate, local communities destroyed by dirty energy extraction and combustion, devastating freak storms, droughts, floods, the list goes on …

This April 1st, join Rising Tide in some creative direct action … use the simply subversive to the downright disruptive: office occupations, banner drops, clownish parades, road blockades, spoof websites, subvertising, street theatre, leaflets, lock-ons or laugh-ins. Whatever works for you and your group.

Join us this Fossil Fools Day and hatch some harebrained schemes that will strike a blow to climate criminals everywhere!

WANT MORE? Fossil Fools Day also marks the launch of the BP Tar Sands Fortnight of Shame: a two-week campaign culminating in actions surrounding BP’s AGM on April 15th. The goal? To stop BP from going into the Canadian Tar Sands – the biggest, dirtiest fossil fuel project on earth. Find out more: Tar Sands in Focus.. And a word to BP: be afraid… be very afraid.

NEED A HAND? If you would like ideas for actions, graphics for leaflets or websites, advice on dealing with the press, etc., send us an email and we’ll do our best to help out: info@risingtide.org.uk

Shell retreats as solidarity with Pat O’Donnell continues

23rd Feb 2010
Round up of events in Dublin and a personal view of the progress of the campaign

23rd Feb 2010
Round up of events in Dublin and a personal view of the progress of the campaign

The week before last Erris fisherman Pat O’Donnell was jailed for seven months for his part in the communities ongoing resistance to Shell’s attempt to impose an experimental gas pipeline on them. Across the country local Shell to Sea groups have been holding solidarity protests and other events for Pat. In Dublin this has included two protests and a public meeting in UCD. Meanwhile Shell have been forced to admit a temporary defeat in the face of local opposition and call off the construction they have planned for Glengad this year.

The first of the Dublin protests was Tuesday last week when campaigners gathered outside Shell HQ to highlight the role of Shell in Pat’s jailing. Because Pat has the fishing rights along the pipeline route he has been repeatedly targeted for detention whenever Shell has needed to carry out construction work. And back in June, just before the arrival of Shell’s pipeline ship the Solitaire, Pat’s boat was boarded at night by four armed and masked men and sunk, an event reminiscent of how oil corporations have dealt with local protests around the world.

On Wednesday a well attended public meeting was held in UCD, speakers include Andy Storey chairperson of Afri (http://www.afri.ie/), Caoimhe Kerins from Dublin Shell to Sea and Maura Harrington, who like Pat has been imprisoned for resisting Shell’s experimental gas pipeline. A report and pictures from that meeting can be found at http://www.indymedia.ie/article/95771 Below I’ve attached audio recordings of the meeting including the question and answer sessions after the speakers presentations.

On Saturday Dublin Shell to Sea campaigners joined friends of Pat’s who had traveled from Mayo for a protest at the GPO. Banners highlighted not only the injustice of Pat’s imprisonment but also the fact that the Irish state is giving billions of gas & oil to the energy corporations without them paying any royalties. This at a time when health, education and pay is being slashed to save a tiny percentage of the sums that are to be given away. Thousands of the ‘Someday Independent’, the leaflet that explains the issues around the campaign in detail were distributed to the public during the protest. This is a 30 second video of this protest at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mE-irZ-0CFA

Before the protest another 1,000 copies had been distributed door to door in the Liberties. You can read the text of the leaflet at http://www.dublins2s.com/content/120000-all-facts-leafl…buted

Three years ago Shell thought it was all over. The millions spent on the media campaign along with the fact that most of the media is either state owned or owned by those who are also in oil & gas exploration meant that all critical voices in the press had been silenced. The Gardai use of violence against protests had been used to smash and demoralize the opposition in the area allowing refinery construction to proceed with only the occasional interruption. It appears at that point it was decided the gloves could come off to smash those who were still holding out and hundreds of private security guards were deployed who intimidated, abused and videoed local residents. Pat O’Donnell’s boat was sunk at sea and Willie Corduff was beaten in the Shell compound at Glengad. These tactics backfired in the Spring when it was discovered that not only were some of these security from east European fascist organisations but that several had been involved in an attempt to spark a civil war in Bolivia, see http://www.indymedia.ie/article/92865

Resistance is fertile

Despite the ongoing attempt to suppress and silence the campaign spirits are high. The pressure created by the campaign meant that An Bord Pleanala felt unable to rubber stamp Shell’s plan’s for running the experimental gas pipeline through the village of Rossport and instead pointed out the obvious safety issues that campaigners had been highlighting for years (e.g. people living in the blast zone) and gave Shell two months to address these. Of course when Shell proved unable to do so that deadline was extended for a further four months but this has forced Shell to call off construction at Glengad this summer.

This is a significant if temporary victory over Shell but Dublin Shell to Sea spokesperson Caoimhe Kerins warned that “Although this announcement is a significant victory for the local community, other major works will still be going ahead, while fisherman Pat O’Donnell is out of Shell’s way in prison. This means that 2010 is set to be another year of disruption for the community, continued harassment and intimidation by Gardai and Shell security, as well as the unlawful arrest and the targeted jailing of key campaigners. There are no options left for Shell, except to process the gas at sea, which is standard practice around the world. This is what local people have been demanding for almost a decade. It’s still not to late to do the right thing.”

The An Bord Pleanala decision has also started to break apart Shell’s well funded media campaign with some of the more courageous journalists daring to stand up to Shell and publish articles questioning the project. As might be expected these journalists are now being targeted in the media for doing so. Shell themselves seem scared of debating the issues with Shell to Sea, at least two TV debates have been canceled due to Shell or pro-Shell journalists pulling out at the last minute in recent weeks.

As the scale of the Great Oil & Gas giveaway has been revealed more and more people are taking a stand against Shell. In the last couple of months new Shell to Sea groups have sprung up around the country, the recently formed Kildare group has been leafletting in Kildare town. You can help in a wide range of ways from simple things like sending a solidarity letter to Pat in prison to let him know he is not alone to getting copies of the ‘Someday Independent’ off Dublin Shell to Sea (contact details on their web site) to joining or forming a local Shell to Sea group to do this and more.

Please write to Pat in prison. His address is: Pat O’Donnell, Castlerea Prison, Harristown, Castlerea,Co.Roscommon. Alternatively you can email mayoshelltosea@gmail.com and they will pass on your email to Pat. The Dublin Shell to Sea page can be found at http://www.dublins2s.com/

Riot police arrest 23 in night raid on peaceful protest against the destruction of Zagreb pedestrian zone

At 03.30 this morning around 100 riot police arrested 23 activists from Green Action and the Right to the City initiative in Zagreb, Croatia. 11.02.2010
At 03.30 this morning around 100 riot police arrested 23 activists from Green Action and the Right to the City initiative in Zagreb, Croatia. The raid took place just hours after 4000 people turned out in snowy conditions to protest against turning part of the pedestrian zone into a ramp for an underground garage planned as part of the Cvjetni shopping centre and luxury flats development in the old part of Zagreb.

The operation aimed to remove the accommodation container which the groups had put on Varsavska Street pedestrian zone as a 24-hour info-point in order to block the beginning of works on the ramp, which is still under legal dispute. Activists inside of the container and on the roof peacefully resisted removal by locking themselves together using arm tubes, and were arrested after the fire brigade cut the tubes. Around 50 more activists blocked the road exits of the lorry carrying the container but were also removed by the riot police.

The police also hacked to pieces a five-metre high wooden trojan horse which had been brought to the site for the previous evening’s protest as a symbol of private interests and corruption masquerading as urban redevelopment.

“Using riot police against a small group of peaceful protesters is a disturbing over-reaction to the civil offence of failing to obtain permission before temporarily placing the container in the pedestrian zone”, said Teo Celakoski from Right to the City. “Yet the whole Cvjetni project is based on dubious legal manoeuvres such as the city authorities’ decision to declare it a project of public interest when it is clearly nothing of the kind”.

“The Croatian authorities must concentrate on tackling the real problem of corruption instead of shooting the messengers, added Tomislav Tomasevic, from Green Action. “The European Commission has repeatedly identified corruption as a major remaining obstacle to Croatia’s EU Accession but if this project is anything to go by there is still a long way to go.”
