Evictions and violence used against indigenous communities in Northern Argentina

Oscar, a colleague from Salta and member of the Olga Aredes Centre, CAPOMA, informs us on the severe situtation taking place in Northern Argentina. There are contineous evictions taking place and violence being committed to the inhabitants which resist to leave there lands for soy. Soy producers are acting with impunity against the inhabitants of the guaraní communities, attacking them violently, while the government and police justify their actions with the argument that the soy producers are the “rightfull” land owners.

Good news from Jujuy: Act of land recuperation of the community JASY ENDY GUASU Lunes,

After more than 20 days of precarious occupation with children, sick people and elders, yesterday the evicted families of El TALAR received sanitary help brought by a truck of the local government of Jujuy. With a lot of courage and indignation they turned the oficial aid down, sending a message to the provincial government that the latter are in the first place responsible for so much injustice. Their message was direct – they were going to re-enter in their land whatever it takes, as they have already suffered enough and it no longer matters to them if they again start firing at them.

Also, on August 17th, a group of Guaraní indians went to the evicted site and noticed that soy producer Strisich began deforesting the site. Deforestation machinery and electrified fences were present and nothing was left of the place.

On August 18th, from mid-day on various social organisation from Jujuy and Guaraní communities of the yungas of Jujuy, jointly went to the community JASY ENDY GUASU, to retake their ancestral lands. Between 1000 and 1500 people realised a symbolic act. All kinds of actions and further legal steps will continue to demand from the government that they respect and comply with the laws and the rights that have been thoroughly been violated, insulting the history and lifes of the native people.

Guaraní communities and social organisation of Jujuy ask international solidarity and attention for this case. They ask to continue sending letters in order to pressure the provincial government. Comuniquees of solidarity are also appreciated.

On August 17th 2008, we were travelling to Embarcación and from there on 50 km towards the interior of the chaco (the dry region with Chaco woods, not the Chaco Province) untill we reached Misión Chaqueña. There, various Wichis communities are resisting the advancing deforestation committed by soy producers. The Wichi communities and others in the neighbourhood of Misión Chaqueña are being surrounded by a regional soy producer called Peñalver. The Wichis have lots of conviction to defend their lands and no longer accept attacks. The community invited us to participate in a meeting to commonly try to save their territory.

Leaving from Embarcación you face kilometers of areas that have been deforested over the past 10 years. Now there is only loneliness and indigeneous communities that migrated and fled deaper into the Chaco. But now soy is also reaching these places.

We also visited to the Guaraní community Jase Endí Guasu in El TALAR, Department San Martín (Ledesma) Jujuy. This community suffered an eviction on monday July 28th. They are furious with the government of Jujuy as they told them that they would take measures concerning their problems with water supply and housing; they would install water tanks and construct houses. Nevertheless they don’t see them as the rightful land owners, declaring that “they dont find any documents of the period between 1996 and 2000 – the period in which the same government gave them the lands – and therefor the legal papers that soy producer Strisich was obtaining are valid”.

On the 14th of August, close to the zone where the eviction took place, a guaraní women in companion of her children, was gathering the animals that got saved from the eviction. She was attacked by Strisich and two gunmen at his service. Strisich, dressed in combat clothing and wearing two guns in his belt, chased her with a knife.

When the community wanted to denounce this act in the local police office, they did not accept it, arguing that Strisich is the land owner. Pablo Pelasso, lawyer known for the cases he brings forward against violaters of Jujuys, in the end made a denounce of homocide intent and threaths to the woman.

Despite the high surveillance on the field, people managed to mix up seeds of bio-potatoes with the ones of the GMO-potatoes present on the field, which means that those last one will have to be destroyed, because thanks to this mix-up its uniqueness will not guaranteed any further.

Few weeks before, the field had been squatted by anti-GMO opponents, an eviction followed to this.

In the night to the 4.7, some activist managed to destroy again some parts of the Rheinstetten experiment field, Despite a strict surveillance, over 5000m² of the field could be destroyed.
Here a translation of the communique:

“In the night from the 4 to the 5 of july, we destroyed around 5000m² of gmo cornfield in Rheinstetten-Forcheim.
We cutted away a part of it, the rest is so destroyed than nothing will ever grow anymore.
The plants can not create cobs anymore. Therefore the experiment is now failed.
The technogical center for the rural development of Augustenberg (LTZ) wanted to study the socalled „co-existence“ of gmo and non-gmo corn in Rheinstetten. Every reasonable person knows that such co-existence is impossible. A large cultivation of gmo plants conducts to a melt, soon or later. The pollen do not let themselves be ruled Seedproducers such as Monsanto render through their genetic engineering farmers all over the world dependent to their products.
By this, they endanger the world’s nourishment as much as its variety.
The LTZ and its responsible, the minister for agriculture Hauk, through their genetic engineering attempts make themselves helpers of the genetic engineering industry. They do not respect the will of the population, which mostly refuse such application within the agricultural sphere.
Fences, watchtowers and sentinels neither did stop us, nor will ever do, in defending us by all means against Monsanto and its collaborators.

Welcome to the August 2008 edition of Spirit of Freedom. As people will soon see, ELP’s prisoner lists have grown yet again. If we exclude the Geek anarchist, Vaggelis Botzatzis, and the two Americans Richard Sills and Michael Sykes (all of whom are listed by ELP as ‘Other Prisoners’), there are now 40 listed animal & earth liberation prisoners in Europe & America.
There are also a number of non-listed prisoners, who are not listed either by their own choice, or because they betrayed their fellow activists and became informants. And remember these numbers do not include those people who are either under House Arrest or on Bail pending Trial. Nor do they include the activists whose locations are currently unknown and who are described by the police as “on the run”. Seeing so many good people removed from their families & loved ones for merely acting out of compassion and a desire to stop environmental destruction and animal abuse is heartbreaking.
Some of the prisoners ELP lists are very well known, others are less well known. However ALL of them deserve our love and support. ALL of the listed prisoners welcome letters of support. THE LECCE FIVE
The Lecce Five have been charged with “subversive association” accused of damaging Esso petrol pumps to oppose the War on Iraq; sabotaging the cash machines of a bank which funds an immigration centre; and targeting the multinational company Benetton in support of Mapuche land rights activists in Chile. All of the defendants are currently either under house arrest or released on bail.

MOVE
MOVE is an eco-revolutionary group who carried out protests in defence of all life. All move prisoners describe themselves as vegetarians. Want to do something to stop our planet from getting trashed?

EF! is about direct action to halt the destruction of the Earth. It’s about doing it yourself rather than relying on leaders, governments or industry.
Direct action is at the heart of it, whether you’re standing in front of a bulldozer, shutting down an open-cast mine or ripping up a field of GM crops.

We’re a loose network of people, groups and campaigns coming together for ecological direct action.

Join us for 5 days of workshops, networking and planning actions, run without leaders by everyone who comes along. The gathering is also a
practical example of low-impact eco-living and non-hierarchical organising.

WHERE IS IT?
The gathering is happening on lovely fields less than 3 miles from Diss in Norfolk, with regular trains to Diss and buses from Diss to the site.
We recommend that you arrive Tue evening, as workshops will start on Wednesday morning and run until Sunday afternoon.

FOOD AND WHAT TO BRING
Delicious vegan food will be provided by the Anarchist Teapot for £4 per day, or you can cater for yourself
Bring camping gear – if you want details of B&Bs in the area contact us.
We are asking for a contribution of £15-£25 according to what you can afford.
Dogs: the gathering is held at a dog free site, unfortunately we will have to turn away any dogs that arrive.

Welcome to the July 2008 edition of Spirit of Freedom. As a number of ELP supporters will be aware, ELP has traditionally dedicated our newsletters to fallen friends, who have either been killed or seriously injured as a result of their protest activities. For the past few months ELP hasn’t carried any dedication and we hoped that we would not have to dedicate another newsletter to a fallen friend again. However last month, ELP received the heartbreaking news about the death of Marie Vesco. Marie was a French activist living in England. She was involved with a number of groups including ‘Food Not Bombs’. On Wednesday the 4th of June 2008 Marie was cycling to the Carnival Against the Arms Trade when a Four Wheel Drive
vehicle (an SUV if your American) swerved across two lanes hitting Marie. A second vehicle then also hit Marie. Marie died instantly: she was just a few days away from her 20th birthday. Marie is remembered as a warm, loud, fun, vivacious figure with an infectious laugh that was always ready to help others. ELP understands that at least two Critical Mass cycle rides have already been dedicated to Marie. Likewise in memory of Marie ELP is dedicating this newsletter to her memory. The loss of Marie is a blow for the movement and our thoughts are with her family and friends.

The Tadcaster GM potato trial has been decontaminated, according to the Sunday Mirror! According to the article, they were completely destroyed, and the Environment Minister isn’t happy. Mr Woolas said: “The people behind this should have the guts to go public and join the debate about GM foods. Their arrogance appalls me.” The attack on June 5 leaves Britain with just one remaining field of GM crops, government sources said last night. The news has not appeared anywhere else.

the local press reports as following:
early friday morning (june 13, 2008) around 35 persons entered the research area (“Forschungsanstalt Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon ART in Zürich Affoltern”) close to zurich and destroyed nearly the whole field trial with genetically modified wheat by scything and trampling the plants.

the research is initiated by Agroscope, university of zurich and ETH (polytech. university).
the present security agents were threatened and couldn’t stop the action.
the police arrested 5 persons after the action in the surrounding area, but it might be difficult to prove they’ve been involved.

in 2003 a similar, but smaller field trial was done by ETH in another village. during weeks greenpeace tried to prevent other activists destroying the field so they could do an own spectacular action later on: greenpeace dumped dung on the field, but was stopped by the agents present.

Environmental protestors from Earth First! UK today staged a peaceful protest at the laboratory and offices of the National Institute for Agricultural Botany (NIAB), in Girton, Cambridge. About a dozen activists invaded the site and hung banners from buildings in protest at a trial for genetically modified (GM) potatoes being carried out at the Institute by BASF, a German based company.

Environmental protestors from Earth First! UK today staged a peaceful protest at the laboratory and offices of the National Institute for Agricultural Botany (NIAB), in Girton, Cambridge. About a dozen activists invaded the site and hung banners from buildings in protest at a trial for genetically modified (GM) potatoes being carried out at the Institute by BASF, a German based company.

The protest was timed to coincide with a national day of action on food and climate change and with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Summit, being held this week in Rome.

Rosie Perkins, a spokesperson for Earth First! UK said:

“Today’s protest was staged to send a clear message to scientists, companies and politicians across the world; that message is that genetically modified food is not the answer to either climate change or world food shortages and we stand here today in solidarity with the many farmers and local food producers across the world who are speaking out against GM crops.

“In recent months, scientists have been pushing and pushing for more GM crops to be grown, claiming they are the solution to many of the problems we face today. However, their claims consistently ignore the social and environmental impacts of GM crops, which include the vulnerability of crops to disease as global agriculture becomes more industrialised and less genetically diverse, as well as the impact of tying food production even closer in to big business and global corporations. We firmly belief that the increasing industrialisation of agriculture benefits neither producer nor consumer and we need to look to a future of low-input, diverse, local food production.”

“The GM trial at NIAB is being conducted under siege-like conditions with high levels of security, including a permanent security personnel presence, high metal fences, alarms and floodlights. The fact that this trial is taking place under such conditions clearly demonstrates the contempt in which the people of this country hold the development of these crops.”

The BASF potato trial at NIAB is one of only 2 outdoor field trials taking place in the UK this year and is a trial for blight resistance in GM potatoes; a further trial for nematode resistance is taking place near Leeds, under the auspices of Leeds University and has also met with local opposition.

On May 6th around 30 protesters shut down the BASF UK headquarters at Cheadle Hulme near Manchester. BASF is planning to run the UK’s only trial of GM crops this year, a trial of blight resistant potatoes.
