“The whole experience has been tough, but all the kind and strengthening words and wise thoughts from strangers made it much easier!” (Former Swedish Animal Rights Prisoner)

Welcome to the October 2009 edition of Spirit of Freedom. Unfortunately we have to start this newsletter with some bad news. Literally in the last few days ELP has learnt of the jailing of two new eco-prisoners, one is Sweden, one in America.

Last month Swedish eco-activist, Jonatan Strandberg was informed that his appeal against the length of his prison sentence was unsuccessful and he was
informed he would be returning to prison. We were informed that Jonatan would be returning to prison at the start of this week and today we received the depressing news that Jonatan is now in prison.

ELP has been proud to know Jonatan for a few months now (ever since his first arrest) and we have always admired the way he has remained true to his beliefs and taken a very accepting view of the fact he might have to return to prison. However despite his own difficulties Jonatan has also worked hard for prisoner support, writing to new prisoners and encouraging those who found themselves behind bars to stay focussed on the positive.

In the same way Jonatan has helped the prisoners whilst he was on the outside it is now our turn to help Jonatan and we very much hope people will send him letters of support.

Besides Jonatan’s imprisonment, ELP has also learnt of the jailing of an American environmentalist, Stephen Murphy, who is accused of involvement in an attempted arson on a town house construction site in 2006. The day after the attempted arson construction workers discovered that at least one of their construction vehicles had been vandalised and ELF slogans written on it. Stephen is currently held in Texas but is expected to be transferred to Los Angeles in the next few weeks where the alleged attempted arson occurred.

Also, with regards to new prisoners, British animal rights activist, Dean Cain, has been returned to prison following the breaching of his parole conditions. Dean was on parole for his involvement in activities at a rabbit farm which breeds rabbits for vivisection.

ELP has also learnt that American animal rights activist, Jordan Halliday, who recently served time in prison for refusing to testify before a Grand Jury, has been indicted on contempt charges and therefore may soon return to prison again. His trial is due to start in November 2009.

Also, as a number of ELP supporters will be aware, earlier this month the long-term American environmental prisoner, Jeff ‘Free’ Leurs was released from prison. This took everyone by surprise, not least Free. However his release proved to be an administration error and he was quickly returned to prison. ELP is disgusted that Free has been returned to prison, especially as he is due for release in a couple of months anyway, and we feel that his treatment is nothing but psychological torture.

Other prisoner news, the British animal rights prisoner John Smith has asked to have his name removed from all prisoner support lists.

But happily ELP does have some positive news amongst all the negative news. British animal rights activist, Sean Kirtley, who was jailed for running a LEGAL campaign group which protested against vivisection, has been released from prison. This is fantastic news and ELP wishes Sean all the best for the future.

And on that note, we shall end this editorial news update. But before we go we shall repeat what we always say – All of the prisoners listed below welcome letters of support. Regardless of what languages you speak, regardless of where you live in the world, your letters of support really do make the world of difference to the prisoners. So please support the eco-prisoners and no compromise in defence of Mother Earth!

If anyone notices any of ELP’s prisoner details is out of date or we do not list a prisoner who we should list, please let ELP know as soon as possible.
ELP is run by a small group of volunteers and although we try to ensure our lists are accurate, we admit we do make mistakes. So help us help keep the lists accurate by letting us know of any changes we need to make.

Details of EF! Winter Moot announced:

The Earth First! Winter moot is an opportunity for people who feel affiliation with the ideas behind Earth First! to network, discuss and reflect on the UK ecological direct action movement and to plan for the future. Earth First! is about direct action to halt the destruction of the Earth. We believe we can make a real difference by doing it ourselves rather than relying on leaders, governments or industry.

This years Earth First! Winter Moot will be taking place in Co. Durham on the weekend of 6/7th February. As well as evaluations and updates from a number of ecological campaigns from around the country, this year we will have a themed event – The Crisis: evaluation, analysis and possible responses. We will be exploring the interactions between the various ecological, financial and resource crises, examining our own conceptions and experiences of crisis, then tying it altogether to find a way forward using non-hierarchical approaches.

We will also be hosting a discussion on how Earth First and the Camp for Climate Action intersect, to deal with quite a number of issues that emerged at the EF! Summer Gathering, including issues of generational understanding, anarchism vs. liberalism, are we seperate networks, and how can we go forward together in the future. This debate will be taking from 6.15-7.30pm on the Saturday evening of the Moot, and is open to all.

Everyone welcome

More about the Moot
The EF! Winter Moot is an opportunity for people who feel affiliation with the ideas behind Earth First! to network, discuss and reflect on the UK ecological direct action movement and to plan for the future.

Following a popular discussion at 2009’s EF! Summer Gathering 2010’s Moot also aims to hold discussions on the theme of “readying ourselves for unpredictability and instability in the UK and globally”. The current & impending crises of economics, ecology, energy & society fundamentally alter the terrain of struggle; this in turn impacts both the practice and possibilities for a radical ecological movement.

2010’s Winter Moot is to be held in County Durham, an area with a large number of opencast coal mines, both active and at the application stage. The weekend will include opportunities to meet with activists involved locally in campaigns against these.

Cost including vegan food & crash-pad accommodation £20-£30 (depending what you can afford-but please don’t blag-even the organisers will pay).

If you have particular accommodation, access or dietary needs or are bringing children it would help us to know as soon as possible so we can plan suitable facilities; whoever you are please do try & drop us an email at least a week in advance so we can gauge how many to cater for.

More Sabotage at Mainshill: Drilling and Harvesting Equipment Targeted

Two reports of sabotage at Mainshill Wood have been posted on Indymedia – one involving the drilling rig on site and another involving harvesting equipment which has been relentlessly targeted over the past month, both with sabotage and early morning actions. Things are heating up at Mainshill as the defiance of the community takes on Scottish Coal’s determination to profit at any cost.

It’s crunch time for new coal in South Lanarkshire.

From Indymedia Scotland:

An anonymous communique was received after two machines used for drilling and testing for coal on site were sabotaged in the early hours of Tuesday morning… The communique reads:

“On the morning of Tuesday the 20th of October two heavy vehicles had their Fuel lines, wiers, gears and fuel tanks destroyed. Their windows and bodys where also spreypainted.

The vehicles damaged have been working to prepare the Mainshill Wood area for coal extraction. If it is open casted then it will join several other mines in the Douglas Valley, two of which are currently expanding.

Scottish Coal, the land owner Lord Home and the government and more than prepared to sacrifice the health of local communities and environment, as well as contribute to climate change and nearly universal environmental degradation for wages, bonuses, targets and profits.

This action was taken by a group of autonomous people in solidarity with all those who oppose the development of Mainshill Wood into an open cast coal mine.”

Another anonymous communique has been received,

“On the morning of Tuesday the 20th of October three tree felling vehicles had wiers cut, lights and other fixtures broken. Their windows where also spreypainted and a free standing flood light was tipped and smashed.

What’s in this issue?
Old King Coal meets his Match, but the Nuclear Empire Strikes Back! Read tales of flotillas, bishop-bashing, blockades and occupations as the Rebel Alliance takes on the Empire. The rebels have also been hanging around in nets and on platforms, occupying and locking-on at coal terminals, and passionately attacking power station fences around the world, trying to shut ’em down. Mainshill protest camp continues to pro-actively resist open-cast mining – they climb, occupy, and by night, anonymous pixies sabotage. Who knows when they sleep – with a strong alliance with local villagers, they welcome YOU to come and play anytime, with a gathering at the end of October.

Want more? Radio-towers toppled, dams and trucks seized, naked oil streaks and green smears in defence of the wild, a shit dumped with shit…resistance to peat mining, genetic engineering, logging and Shell in Ireland, and for Vestas wind turbine factory and workers on the Isle of Wight.

Still not enough? Stopping Tesco, climate campaigning successes, runway invasions, more ecotage, and the EF! Winter Moot, plus contacts and upcoming dates.

Mainshill gathering flyerBuilding – Workshops – Action

Join us at Mainshill Wood for the weekend of the 31st October & 1st November or longer if you can.

Work has started at Mainshill, where Scottish Coal want a new coal mine but the community does not. Huge areas of plantation are being felled and JCBs have moved in. This gathering will strengthen the campaign and give new energy to the Solidarity Camp.

Events over the Weekend:

* Saturday 31st October, 13:00: A walk of the area with people from surrounding and affected communities, visiting areas that have been destroyed by Scottish Coal and areas that we can still save. A discussion on the campaign so far and where we can take it will follow.
* Climbing, tree-house building and tunnelling workshops
* A “work day” to build the Solidarity Camp some new defences
* Evening camp-fire entertainment
* Plenty of chances to stop a beautiful area of Scotland’s countryside from being turned into an opencast coal mine

What to bring:

* Warm clothes and water-proofs, a tent, sleeping bag and mat
* Any food, building materials and tools you can
* Most importantly, bring yourself and your friends

Contact us on: mainshill@riseup.net / 07806926040

The Solidarity Camp has been doing its best to stop work on the site, but now we need your support and solidarity to win this fight against Scottish Coal, Lord Home and South Lanarkshire Council!

Work stopped again at Mainshill as loggers are blockaded out of the Wood

Early yesterday residents of the Mainshill Solidarity Camp in South Lanarkshire stopped logging for the day by putting their bodies and ingenuity between machinery and the trees, rigging up a sky raft across a logging path used by heavy machinery to rip up unoccupied parts of the site.

Sky raft blocks access
No tree felling todayEarly yesterday residents of the Mainshill Solidarity Camp in South Lanarkshire stopped logging for the day by putting their bodies and ingenuity between machinery and the trees, rigging up a sky raft across a logging path used by heavy machinery to rip up unoccupied parts of the site.

In the past week Scottish Woodlands Ltd have been removing trees from the site of the camp. The clear felling is facilitating the creation of a new open cast coal mine on the site by Scottish Coal Ltd. Despite local outrage at the development plan and over 700 letters of objection sent to the council in protest, plans are going ahead to create what could become the 5th mine in this already heavily polluted area of Scotland.

But people from all over the world and all walks of life are determined to stop them! Residents of the Solidarity Camp suspended a sky raft above the access road with one person in it, effectively preventing the tree harvester from gaining access to part of the wood where felling was to resume. The blockade lasted for 8 hours, after which one arrest was made at 12:30pm.

Residents of the camp condemn the behavior of Scottish Woodlands Ltd in the last few weeks, who have endangered peoples’ lives by working dangerously close to tree houses and continuing work despite being within a distance deemed inappropriate by health and safety standards.

Despite dangerous conditions and worsening weather, campers remain determined to continue fighting against the injustice of this development and to stand in solidarity with the local residents of Douglas who have been ignored at every level of the planning system.

As one inhabitant of Mainshill camp site stated ”We will not allow work to continue on the Mainshill site as long as we are here. Plans for this new open cast coal mine are a blatant case of putting profit before the health of Douglas Valley residents and environmental concerns, in particular climate change.”

The camp needs YOUR support today. Go to http://coalactionscotland.noflag.org.uk/ for information on what help is needed, and how to get to the site.

No more mines in the Douglas valley! No New Coal!

Sabotage and digger-diving – work stopped twice in two days at Mainshill Wood

For the past two weeks Scottish Woodlands and others contracted by Scottish Coal have been devastating parts of Mainshill Wood, those beyond the Solidarity Camp. Plantation forest is being felled at an alarming rate, with massive harvesting machines and JCBs tearing up more of Scotland’s countryside. Scottish Coal is establishing its own site, south of the Solidarity Camp and right in the middle of Mainshill Wood. Your solidarity is urgently needed – this work must be stopped.

Sabotage

An anonymous communique was received after three of the four large pieces of harvesting machinery on site were sabotaged in the early hours of Thursday morning. Work is on-going round the clock, but did not start until 4 or 5pm on Thursday, being delayed for many hours. The communique reads:

“On the morning of Thursday 8th of October three heavy vehicles had their locks glued. These vehicles belong to Scottish Woodlands Ltd, who have been subcontracted by Scottish Coal to clearfell Mainshill Wood.

Digger-Diving

On Tuesday night at around 9:30pm, long after it had got dark, residents of the Solidarity Camp suddenly realised that a massive harvesting machine was cutting through the last line of trees separating the camp from the rest of the site, dangerously close to where people live and were sleeping, both in treehouses and tunnels.

Residents quickly surrounded the machine, and tried to explain that the driver was putting people’s lives at risk. The driver, breaking the companies own health and safety regulations, continued working despite people being within metres of the machine. At one point the saw blades on the end of the harvester’s arm were swung within a metre of a resident’s head. Eventually after much shouting and whistle-blowing, the harvester was chased back to the access gate.

Shortly after, another piece of heavy machinery that collects the felled trees tried to make its way up the access path, but was blocked by residents of the camp. The driver refused to stop and kept moving towards the people blocking its path, and only did when it was clear that the windscreen might be redecorated if the machine wasn’t stopped. One driver exclaimed “I don’t care” in response to a resident shouting “you’re going to kill someone!”, while the second driver at one point jumped out of the cab in pursuit of a resident and shouted “I’m going to kill you”.

That same night, a resident in a surrounding community had called Strathclyde police after a house was attacked with air-rifles. The police didn’t bother to show up. At the Solidarity Camp, however, within 20 minutes two police vehicles and four officers braved the mud and threatened to arrest anyone stopping work, claiming the residents were endangering themselves by coming close to the machinery, despite the fact that the machinery practically came on to the camp! The only compromise was that Scottish Woodlands agreed to stop felling trees at night.

The above hightlights the disregard that Scottish Woodlands and Scottish Coal have for the safety of Solidarity Camp residents (not to mention the health of local communities) and how Strathclyde Police are complicit in protecting property and the interests of private business, and not people.

Come to Mainshill

Your support and solidarity is urgently needed at Mainshill. Even if just for a few hours, people are needed. You can go and stop work for the day, chop wood, build barricades and defenses, or do the washing up. It is impossible to stress how fast the work on the site is happening, and how quickly the area is being devastated.

*Hit the Production of Climate Chaos – get involved* – 13th December call for actions

The climate catastrophe has not happened by random chance and the melting glacier is not its place. Our economic system, the way it produces goods, and the way they are transported and finally consumed is the root of climate change.

The climate catastrophe has not happened by random chance and the melting glacier is not its place. Our economic system, the way it produces goods, and the way they are transported and finally consumed is the root of climate change.

We do not believe that this COP will solve the climate crisis. The delegates, NGOs and company representatives are stuck in an ideology of never ending economic growth and universal market solutions to all human-made problems, such as ecological destruction. Social justice issues are consequently ignored.

On December 13th we call for action on this economic system. We encourage affinity groups to take action on targets in Copenhagen, and abroad. In the Morning of December 13th we will also shut down the harbour of Copenhagen through a mass action blockade. The harbour is a key symbol of the global free-market economy. Here becomes visible what is usually hidden: ecological deterioration, economic and social exploitation, and utter injustice.

Since the dawn of colonialism the global shipping industry has been characterized by violence. What was once gold pillaged from the Incas is these days profit based on cheap resources and cheap labour – usually transported by ships. Today, container shipping is one of the foundations of capitalism. There are hardly any regulations: fuel is not taxed, emissions are not subject to control and borders are seemingly non-existent for container ships. At the same time, the never ending need for more cheap goods is almost limitless. The ‘free’ global flow of goods continues to grow – with benefits for only the few.

But whereas these flows of goods can enter the EU/ rich world freely, humans cannot. As soon as people do not have the right passport or enough money when entering rich countries, they are put in prisons, deported and deprived of the most basic human rights. And the militarisation of the seas is not just happening around the EU borders. It is also used to protect international shipping, like in Somalia where international fishing fleets have robbed Somali fishermen of the fundamental elements of their existence.

Finally, international shipping is more than just a method of transport for the global economy. It is in itself a primary cause of climate change. Approximately 5% of Global Greenhouse Emissions are produced by the shipping industry. Container ship fuel is basically toxic waste left over from petrol production, containing high amounts of sulphur and mercury. And like international flights, nobody is responsible for shipping industry emissions under the Kyoto Protocol.

Climate justice and real social change will not come from above. Effective change has to come from everyone – affected, responsible, and observer. True change has to be organized and realized by people all over the world – all people on the streets and in the fields. We say no to the power of governments, companies and so-called non-government organisations which are only interested in maintaining their power, influence and flows of capital.

We will try to stop this madness for a day. Fighting for climate justice means changing our economic system and this needs to happen here in the rich global north, which reaps the most benefits from the disaster. For the free flow of people and ideas, instead of flows of goods to benefit the few.

At 6.30 this morning ten campaigners, together with local residents, peacefully blockaded Ravenstruther coal loading terminal in South Lanarkshire. Having stopped its reopening after the weekend, they are currently preventing coal being loaded and transported. [1] Protesters plan to stay in place as long as possible.

Two protesters are locked on top of the coal conveyor belt, holding a large banner with the words “No New Coal” high over the terminal. Others are blockading the front gate with their bodies, arm tubes and bike locks.

The action is aiming to disrupt the operations of Scottish Coal in the region. The protesters are acting to oppose the five open cast coal mines active in the area, and in resistance to the thirteen new open cast coal mines due to open in Scotland. [2] [3]

Bill Reid who is at the site said: “In the face of dangerous runaway climate change, increasing our dependence on coal – the most polluting of the fossil fuels – is simply unacceptable. We urgently need to switch to renewable energy and close existing mines. We shouldn’t even be thinking about new ones.”

The demonstration today is in support of the Lanarkshire communities who are opposing new open cast mines. [4] Anna Mackenzie, a local resident said: “We’re here today to send a clear message that we don’t want parts of Scotland such as South Lanarkshire to become the most heavily mined areas in Europe, as they will be if permission is granted for all the new open cast coal mines currently being proposed. Direct action is not just the only avenue left open, it is also an effective one, as demonstrated by the occupation of Mainshill Wood which has been preventing an open cast mine from starting and furthering highlighting the negative health impact which open casting has been having on the people of Douglas.” [5]

Another protester, Helen Forbes said: “Local authorities, the Scottish government and companies like Scottish Coal and Scottish Power are ignoring the scientific evidence on climate change. We have to take responsibility for our climate and our future, and stop the coal industry and its expansion. Today at Ravenstruther we’re acting responsibly”.

With Scotland’s CO2 emissions increasing significantly, continuing the consumption of coal will make it impossible for Scotland to meet its 80% target reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050. Jo Price said “The Scottish government is paying lip service to the dangers of climate change. As long as they allow companies like Scottish Coal to dig up our countryside and burn the product we won’t meet the targets.” [6]

It is estimated that 6,380 tonnes of coal were stopped from being loaded, equivalent to 11,675,400 kg CO2 released into the atmosphere.

The blockaders apologized to any workers affected by today’s demonstration, but in recognizing the desperate need to stop burning coal sees no other choice but to target the companies responsible for mining it.

NOTES FOR EDITORS

[1] There is currently a coal freight train sitting in Ravenstruther coal-rail terminal, which this action is preventing from being loaded. Five such trains leave Ravenstruther every day.

[2] 3 open cast coal mines deliver coal to the Ravenstruther coal-rail terminal. The new mines proposed for Lanarkshire are likely to use it too (as is the case with Poniel open cast, which started producing coal in
September).

[3] Ravenstruther coal-rail terminal delivers coal to power stations throughout England including Drax (Drax Group plc.), Rugeley (International Power), and Ironbridge (E.on).

[4] Douglas hosted a Community Health Public Meeting on 23rd September 2009, after a Community Health Study of the heavily-mined Douglasdale area revealed it as a troubling significant hotspot for respiratory illnesses
and cancer.

“Studies performed in the United States indicate higher lung cancer rates, and higher mortality rates for respiratory, heart, and kidney diseases in communities living in proximity to open-cast coal extraction
operations. ” (See Coal Health Study, below)
