Frack Off! 500 ft high Banner Drop Off Blackpool Tower

Ear­ly Sat­ur­day morn­ing anti-frack­ing [1] cam­paign­ers climbed 500 feet to hang two ban­ners [2] from the icon­ic Black­pool Tow­er rais­ing aware­ness about the dan­gers of hydraulic frac­tur­ing for shale gas spread­ing to the UK. The two climbers was were lat­er arrest­ed by police when they descend­ed, but not before hav­ing their lives risked by Black­pool Tow­er work­ers who attacked them with a pres­sure wash­er while they dan­gled hun­dreds of feet above the ground.

Black­pool Tow­er is five miles east of the first frack­ing test well in the UK. The group is high­light­ing the issue and launch of an anti-frack­ing direct action cam­paign cen­tred around the web­site http://www.frack-off.org

Nathan Roberts, one of the climbers, said “There are so many things wrong with this uncon­ven­tion­al method of gas extrac­tion, it’s hard to know where to start! It has been linked with poi­soned water sup­plies, earth­quakes, leak­ing gas and even radioac­tive con­t­a­m­i­na­tion — and that’s before you even get to the effect it will have on the cli­mate. It’s unbe­liev­able that they think they can get away with it. We can’t let this hap­pen.”

Sami Jones, anoth­er climber, said “We hear a lot about ener­gy short­ages, but real­ly we need to be invest­ing in research­ing sus­tain­able ener­gy sources, rather than find­ing tiny pock­ets of non-renew­able gas and destroy­ing our plan­et in order to get to them.”

He con­tin­ued, “The UK frack­ing indus­try is in its infan­cy. We must act now if we are to stop it in its tracks. It’s bad for Lan­cashire, it’s bad for the UK and it’s bad for the plan­et.”

Cuadrilla Resources [3] have been forced to tem­porar­i­ly sus­pend their explorato­ry test site at Preese Hall test well [4], near Black­pool fol­low­ing the out­cry over two earth­quakes in the vicin­i­ty, have in the mean­time drilled anoth­er well and are present­ly mov­ing their drilling rig to a third site. France, the states of New York and New Jer­sey, the Cana­di­an province of Que­bec and the Swiss can­ton of Fri­bourg have all recent­ly banned frack­ing. Frack­ing needs to be stopped in the UK.

[1] Hydraulic Frac­tur­ing (or ‘frack­ing’) is a method used to free oth­er­wise inac­ces­si­ble gas trapped in rock. Wells are drilled and ‘frack­ing flu­id,’ con­sist­ing of mil­lions of gal­lons of water, sand and a tox­ic cock­tail of patent­ed chem­i­cals, is inject­ed into the rock under high pres­sure to crack it. Fantastic week of blocking Shell

This week saw Shell begin the next stage of their gas project by attempt­ing to extend and secure their com­pound in Augh­oose in prepa­ra­tion to lay the onshore sec­tion of the pipeline. This entailed trac­tors deliv­er­ing fenc­ing, machin­ery and oth­er things for them to car­ry out the work. If all had gone to plan would have had the com­pound near com­ple­tion now. How­ev­er, there was five days of 12 hour block­ades which has slowed them down tremen­dous­ly. Here’s a quick round up of the events of last week…

The week start­ed Mon­day 25th July at 7am with a tri­pod which last­ed over five hours. The pro­test­er was removed using scaf­fold­ing. The after­noon was spent caus­ing chaos on bikes and on foot with the cops even­tu­al­ly need­ing to seize bikes in order to stop the pro­test­ers. At most ten trac­tors made the jour­ney to the com­pound, all hav­ing been delayed. Shell made a state­ment on the radio that their work had been “severe­ly imped­ed”. Not bad for the first day.

At 7am on Tues­day there was an arm tube lock-on which last­ed well over an hour. No arrests were made. Only 2 trac­tors made it into the com­pound before mid­day. The rest of the day was spent hid­ing in ditch­es and jump­ing out in front of and onto trac­tors with one per­son spend­ing over an hour and a half on top of a trac­tor before being forcibly removed and arrest­ed. Shell had still had less than 20 deliv­er­ies to the com­pound so far in the week.

Wednes­day saw an 8 hour lock-on from 7am. Two indi­vid­u­als were arrest­ed under pub­lic order charges. The Gar­dai (police) had stepped up their ‘pro­tec­tion’ of the trac­tors and were pro­vid­ing a tight con­voy for each trac­tor. At some points there was two pad­dy wag­ons, two squad cars, a cut­ting team, an IRMS jeep and detec­tive Brett Nolan’s under­cov­er vehi­cle escort­ing each trac­tor. The Gar­dai were being ordered to get out of their vehi­cles and run along­side the trac­tor in order to try and stop the peo­ple hop­ping aboard. Despite this peo­ple were able to mount most trac­tors that went by and less than ten trac­tors made their deliv­er­ies by 7pm.

On Thurs­day the first trac­tor was stopped by some­one climb­ing onto the cab. Pleas­ing­ly this last­ed for two and a half hours, with the indi­vid­ual man­ag­ing to jump the fence and get away with­out being arrest­ed. With some fine com­mu­ni­ca­tion and coor­di­na­tion, as the next trac­tor made its jour­ney from the refin­ery to the new com­pound a group cre­at­ed a decoy by appear­ing to attempt to get on the trac­tor. How­ev­er unbe­known to the cops this was mere­ly a dis­trac­tion as the tri­pod was being set up just a cou­ple of hun­dred metres up the road. After the sounds of a bat­tle cry in the dis­tance the group of pro­test­ers caus­ing chaos respond­ed and ran up the road with the Gar­dai look­ing some­what baf­fled. As the tri­pod was estab­lished a call went out to anoth­er group who were sit­u­at­ed over in Cross­moli­na (a town 45 min­utes from the camp)where the scaf­fold­ing firm are based. They block­ad­ed the scaf­fold­ing firms gates for a cou­ple of hours. No arrests were made. The tri­pod was even­tu­al­ly dis­man­tled at around 3pm so peo­ple gath­ered at the refin­ery gates. Num­bers grew and morale was high. When the next trac­tor was brought out chaos ensued. One pro­test­er climbed on the cab and after 20 min­utes was forcibly removed and arrest­ed. This was fol­lowed by anoth­er pro­test­er climb­ing under­neath the same trac­tor. They were removed after about 15 min­utes but man­aged to avoid arrest. This was fol­lowed by a rolling block­ade on the road with peo­ple sit­ting down, being removed then sit­ting straight back down. After about 40 min­utes the trac­tor reversed back into the refin­ery. The ela­tion among folk was amaz­ing. The cops look­ing defeat­ed got in their vehi­cles and left. There was real cel­e­bra­tion with a feel­ing that this had been one of the strongest days of the cam­paign. It was 5.15pm and work was­n’t due to fin­ish until 7pm. A group stayed at the refin­ery to ensure noth­ing came out…it did­n’t. Two trucks made deliv­er­ies on Thurs­day.

Fri­day was the mass day of action. Due to this Shell had already can­celled work for the day. Pro­test­ers made their way down to the com­pound at around 9.30. Some pro­test­ers made it into the com­pound whilst oth­ers tore down fences. There was a huge Gar­dai pres­ence and approx­i­mate­ly 80 IRMS (Shel­l’s pri­vate secu­ri­ty). A sec­ond attempt was made lat­er in the day to pull down more fences which end­ed in sev­er­al peo­ple being hurt and requir­ing hos­pi­tal treat­ment. Despite this peo­ple remained at the com­pound , many spend­ing the after­noon play­ing music and relax­ing on the road. Despite the injuries it was felt it was a great day and that by hav­ing the day of action our work was already done as Shell did­n’t work.

Shel­l’s first week of work did not go to plan. After study­ing their traf­fic man­age­ment plan , which out­lines their pre­dict­ed truck move­ments over the 26 month peri­od that they intend to com­plete the project, it appears that at this stage their aim was to be mak­ing 159 truck move­ments per day! Last week in total they had approx­i­mate­ly 40.

There feels like a real buzz in the cam­paign at the moment! The Gar­daí are appear­ing stretched and are using up a lot of their resources. They are hav­ing to change their tac­tics dai­ly and despite their efforts and ludi­crous pro­tec­tion of Shel­l’s vehi­cles pro­test­ers are still man­ag­ing to cause huge dis­rup­tion.

If peo­ple can come up,now real­ly feels like the time! To main­tain this strong resis­tance we need peo­ple and ideas. There is so much to do on camp at the moment. Not only is there protests but camp life is always busy and full of things to do.

At 6.59 this morn­ing a tri­pod was erect­ed by peo­ple from Ross­port Sol­i­dar­i­ty Camp on the road between Shel­l’s Bal­linaboy refin­ery and their com­pound at Augh­osse there­by blockad­ing the road to all incom­ing trucks. Shell were due to move the first lot of fenc­ing from one site to anoth­er at 7am in order to pre­pare and enlarge the exist­ing com­pound in prepa­ra­tion for turf removal before pipe lay­ing, but instead the truck of fenc­ing now sits behind a line of 30 IRMS secu­ri­ty with nowhere to go. Mean­while the head of IRMS, Jim Far­rell, can be seen mak­ing fran­tic phone calls.

Shell delayed again — 2nd day

A vari­ety of actions have been tak­ing place all day in order to delay Shel­l’s expan­sion and secur­ing of their new com­pound. Protests and block­ades from 7am to 7pm

On Tues­day 26th July the actions against Shel­l’s pro­posed high pres­sure gas pipeline began at 7am in the morn­ing with 6 peo­ple block­ing the road with an arm tube lock on. No arrests were made. This was fol­lowed by mul­ti­ple block­ades of trac­tors and equip­ment bound for the Augh­oose com­pound. Cur­rent­ly Shell are work­ing on secur­ing their com­pound by putting up stronger fences, lay­ing bog mats and bring­ing in machin­ery. This is in prepa­ra­tion for the peat removal from the area in order to begin lay­ing the pipe.

Peo­ple have been climb­ing up on the back of flat bed trail­ers and on top of var­i­ous trac­tors and trucks. One per­son was on top of a trac­tor for over an hour and a half before being forcibly removed and arrest­ed by the Gar­dai (police) who have been trav­el­ing in con­voy ‘pro­tect­ing’ the trac­tors all day.

Only 2 loads were suc­cess­ful­ly deliv­ered to the com­pound before mid­day. This after­noon has seen con­tin­u­ous dis­rup­tion of the deliv­er­ies, with peo­ple hid­ing along the road and jump­ing out/on the con­voy to force it to stop.

One local per­son suc­cess­ful­ly blocked the road by climb­ing up on top of a lor­ry direct­ly in front of the com­pound.

Its been anoth­er long and amaz­ing day. It is becom­ing clear that the Gar­daí are find­ing the inten­si­ty of the protests frus­trat­ing and that they seem reluc­tant to make arrests. It remains to be seen whether they will be able to keep this lev­el of polic­ing up but it is clear­ly exhaust­ing all of their resources.

This is a crit­i­cal time in the the cam­paign and to keep this kind of protests going we need more peo­ple! There is a mass Day of Action this Fri­day 29th July. If you can come up soon­er or stay for longer it would be great!

Mayo — Shell’s con­struc­tion stopped for fifth con­sec­u­tive day

– Cam­paign­ers blockad­ing heavy vehi­cles pre­vent con­struc­tion of Shell’s onshore pipeline — Press release from ear­li­er today — more details from today plus pho­tos to fol­low as soon as the folk involved catch their breath!

This morn­ing, 28th of July 2011, cam­paign­ers again suc­cess­ful­ly stopped the first haulage of the day from Shell’s refin­ery at Bal­linaboy to the pro­posed tun­nel­ing com­pound at Augh­oose, Erris. Co. Mayo. Two peo­ple climbed on top of the trac­tor car­ry­ing mate­ri­als for the con­struc­tion site at 7.05am. The cam­paign­ers are cur­rent­ly block­ing all fur­ther Shell trans­port for the fifth con­sec­u­tive work day since Shell attempt­ed to start peat removal on Fri­day the 22nd of July.

The first block­ade of the day last­ed for over two hours. At 9.45 a tri­pod block­ade was erect­ed on the same stretch of road, which is cur­rent­ly block­ing Shel­l’s haulage. Con­tin­u­ous block­ades can be expect­ed until 7pm this evening. Three arrests were made yes­ter­day. There have been no arrests so far today.

Local res­i­dent Bet­ty Schultz protest­ing this morn­ing at Bal­linaboy, said “Tomorrow’s Day of Action marks our con­tin­u­ing oppo­si­tion to the dis­rup­tion of the com­mu­ni­ty and the unique envi­ron­ment we live in. Now is the time to sup­port the com­mu­ni­ty of Erris in their cam­paign. Ire­land can’t afford to give away its nat­ur­al resources.”

Peo­ple from around Ire­land are answer­ing this SOS call from Erris, and many are expect­ed to arrive this after­noon and this evening to be ready for a mass Day of Action tomor­row, Fri­day the 29th of July. In advance of the mass action tomor­row, local women gath­ered at the entrance to Bal­linaboy this morn­ing from 7am to show that Shell do not have the com­mu­ni­ty con­sent.

Gle­n­amoy res­i­dent Mary Horan at Bal­linaboy gates said “While in Ire­land we are clos­ing our hos­pi­tals due to lack of funds, Shell have today announced prof­its of 13 bil­lion euros. Shell’s prof­its announced this morn­ing are sick­en­ing to this com­mu­ni­ty whose health and safe­ty has been sac­ri­ficed for Shel­l’s share­hold­ers. Nei­ther Shell nor Enda Ken­ny can hide the injus­tice being done to Ire­land. We will be here until jus­tice is done.”

In 1811-12 Arti­san cloth work­ers in the Mid­lands and North of Eng­land rose up against fac­to­ry own­ers who were impos­ing new machines and putting them out of work. Since the 1950s the Lud­dites have been paint­ed as fools opposed to all tech­nol­o­gy and progress, but in fact the Lud­dites were very selec­tive in their attacks, break­ing only machines they thought were ‘hurt­ful to Com­mon­al­i­ty’. What can the Lud­dites teach us about the ongo­ing use of tech­nol­o­gy to replace work­ers’ jobs, as well as issues like GM food and nuclear pow­er? Can we escape the myth that tech­nol­o­gy always brings progress?

After years of fight­ing their evic­tion through the courts they have now been served their papers, and have until the 31st August to leave. this work­shop will out­line the his­to­ry of the cam­paign, dis­cuss plans for resist­ing the evic­tion and, if there is enough inter­est, organ­ise a work­ing par­ty to vis­it Dale Farm to help them pre­pare for evic­tion.

DSEi is the worlds largest Arms Fair, as many EFers know. This year it’s from Sep­tem­ber 13–18. It’s not sim­ply about the arms trade. It’s about pub­lic ser­vices “cuts”: the envi­ron­ment: bank­ing and investors: the con­flicts in the Mid­dle East and North Africa. Not to men­tion the bor­ders that stop peo­ple flee­ing con­flict There’s a call for a mass block­ade of the DLR on the Tues­day. Pre­vi­ous Days of Action- and oth­er days in the week ‑have includ­ed street par­ties, Crit­i­cal Mass bike rides, die-ins, mock sales of “arms”, legs and even a tank; splash­ing fake blood across the entrances, engag­ing with arms deal­ers on the trains and plat­forms, invad­ing the car park and rail entrance, block­ing the roads, lock­ing on to the trains, even swim­ming in the dock! Come and get active in this inter­ac­tive and hope­ful­ly fun work­shop where we’ll be look­ing at some fun­da­men­tal build­ing blocks for tak­ing non-vio­lent direct action to fight suf­fer­ing, and prac­tis­ing dif­fer­ent non-vio­lent ech­niques to hold occu­pa­tions, block­ade, break out of ket­tles, de-arrest peo­ple, and to deal with oth­er police tac­tics, like snatch squads, hors­es and dogs. We’ll also give lots of oth­er tips for deal­ing with pub­lic order sit­u­a­tions and for affin­i­ty group actions, includ­ing some key legal infor­ma­tion which you should know when you’re tak­ing action, and some tips about deal­ing with the media. And we’ll look at some of the val­ues and atti­tudes which are key to tak­ing NVDA, like non-hier­ar­chi­cal organ­is­ing and con­sen­sus (and oth­ers). The kids’ space is designed as a place where chil­dren and those car­ing for them can relax, play and eat. The space con­tains books, toys and craft mate­ri­als.

The kids’ space is NOT a creche and does­n’t have staff or facil­i­ties to care for chil­dren.

Par­ents and car­ers are respect­ful­ly remind­ed that they will need to col­lect chil­dren at meal times/breaks and that they much keep adults in the kids space informed of where they can be found; please also fill in the forms in the kids kitchen regard­ing food aller­gies etc.

If you do not have a child at the gath­er­ing, but would like to help in kids space, please talk to the col­lec­tive. Help with read­ing sto­ries, play­ing games, art and crafts always wel­come.

Kid’s kitchen

This pro­vides meals suit­able for and at appro­pri­ate times for chil­dren. Kids meal tick­ets cost £2 or £3 a day for 2 meals (the low­er rate is for tod­dlers); please buy these at the gate tent. This is the first time we have sold kids meal tick­ets and hope­ful­ly this will cov­er the cost of meals, but we may need to ask for help if this is not enough to cov­er our costs.

Even those with­out chil­dren can help by with cook­ing and wash­ing up in the kids space, please vol­un­teer if you can.

Games and activ­i­ties

Dur­ing the morn­ing (approx 10 am ‑noon) there will be activ­i­ties and work­shops for kids in one of the work­shop spaces.

In the after­noon (after lunch), there will be games in the top mead­ow for chil­dren and adults togeth­er. Again, any help with these very wel­come — just ask the collective/kids space crew.

Pub­lic Trans­port

The site is eas­i­ly acces­si­ble by pub­lic trans­port, you can get the train either to Diss or Nor­wich and then catch the bus route no 1 (Sim­monds) from Diss to Nor­wich. Or you could walk or cycle — it’s only 1.5miles away from Diss train sta­tion. Please come by pub­lic trans­port if at all pos­si­ble! .

We will run pick-ups from the train sta­tion for any­body who can’t use the bus ser­vice or for larg­er groups of peo­ple. If you need a lift please let us know well in advance (and not in the mid­dle of the night, when you’re at a train sta­tion some­where!). !

Wheel­chair users intend­ing to use Diss sta­tion will need to book assis­tance with the train oper­a­tor. There are no lifts so sta­tion staff have to assist mobil­i­ty impaired cus­tomers across the track. Appar­ent­ly the sta­tion is not manned 24 hours a day and the gate for the cross­ing is kept locked — so do phone and book to be sure .We have been told the bus ser­vice includes some low-floor bus­es with easy access for pushchairs, peo­ple with mobil­i­ty impair­ments etc.

It is then a 3 ‑4 mile walk or hitch to the site; on the Dick­le­burgh bypass (don’t go into Dick­le­burgh vil­lage) is a right turn to Shim­pling and Burston; fol­low this road through Burston vil­lage, past the vil­lage green and out of the vil­lage. There is a sharp left turn, then down a hill to a sharp right turn. Site is on the right just over a lit­tle brick bridge.

Activists’ state­ment

We are 20 of the 114 peo­ple who were pre­emp­tive­ly arrest­ed near E.ON’s Rat­cliffe-on-Soar coal pow­er sta­tion over two years ago. Dur­ing our tri­al last year we argued that our plan to safe­ly shut down the pow­er sta­tion was nec­es­sary in order to pro­tect the ever esca­lat­ing num­bers of peo­ple dying as a result of cli­mate change. We lat­er found out our tri­al was rigged by the police and CPS to get con­vic­tions.

Through plac­ing under­cov­er offi­cers in our move­ment, using mass pre­emp­tive arrest and rig­ging our tri­al, the state has delib­er­ate­ly attempt­ed to silence dis­sent­ing voic­es. This quelling of dis­sent, now repeat­ed in the young peo­ple fac­ing prison for protest­ing against the attacks on pub­lic ser­vices, is fun­da­men­tal­ly unde­mo­c­ra­t­ic. It is yet anoth­er exam­ple of those in pow­er pro­tect­ing their own inter­ests. Whether it’s E.ON Ener­gy or News Inter­na­tion­al, the gov­ern­ment and police have a track record of col­lud­ing with big busi­ness. We need to look at the root caus­es of cli­mate change, and ask why the prof­its of cor­po­ra­tions such as E.ON are being pri­ori­tised over future gen­er­a­tions, and the mil­lions already on the front line of our chang­ing cli­mate. Tak­ing action on cli­mate change is not an act of moral right­eous­ness, its about pro­tect­ing our future. His­to­ry is full of exam­ples of ordi­nary peo­ple act­ing to defend their rights and those of oth­ers, and we need a strong move­ment of peo­ple doing just that. Win­ning this appeal is just one small vic­to­ry in the fight against the sys­tem­i­cal­ly polit­i­cal nature of polic­ing. We stand in sol­i­dar­i­ty with all those have suf­fered injus­tice from the state or face repres­sion for dar­ing to take polit­i­cal action.

Activists from across the nation and around the world join Mon­tana and Ida­ho res­i­dents in demand­ing that Schweitzer final­ly stand up to “Big Oil.”

On the morn­ing of July 12th, six activists from Earth First! and North­ern Rock­ies Ris­ing Tide have risked arrest by occu­py­ing Gov­er­nor Schweitzer’s office in an act of non-vio­lent civ­il dis­obe­di­ence. The activists have locked their arms in a mock oil pipeline made out of PVC plas­tic pipe. In the wake of the Sil­ver­tip spill, Gov­er­nor Schweitzer has pub­licly chas­tised Exxon Mobil, while simul­ta­ne­ous­ly con­tin­u­ing to pro­mote the con­struc­tion of the Key­stone XL pipeline, mega­load ship­ments bound for the Alber­ta Tar Sands and oth­er extreme fos­sil fuel projects through­out the state.

“If the Gov­er­nor has his way, Mon­tana will be trans­formed into what is essen­tial­ly an ener­gy extrac­tion colony for Big Oil. The Sil­ver­tip spill is sim­ply a short pre­view of what this would mean for the lives and liveli­hood of all Mon­tanans,” says Great Falls native Peter Dolan, one of the eight occu­py­ing the office.

Activists inside the Capi­tol are also demand­ing that Schweitzer stand up to Tran­sCana­da and oth­er inter­na­tion­al crim­i­nal orga­ni­za­tions by pub­licly oppos­ing Alber­ta Tar Sands expor­ta­tion. This project is wide­ly known as the most destruc­tive ener­gy process on the plan­et by lead­ing envi­ron­men­tal orga­ni­za­tions. Accord­ing to a recent report by Uni­ver­si­ty of Nebras­ka-Lin­coln engi­neer­ing pro­fes­sor John Stans­bury, nei­ther Tran­sCana­da nor the reg­u­la­tors eval­u­at­ing the pro­posed Key­stone XL pipeline have prop­er­ly con­sid­ered the risks. Stans­bury said Tran­sCana­da under­es­ti­mat­ed both the fre­quen­cy of spills on the pipeline and the sever­i­ty of the worst-case sce­nario spills.

“As the recent Exxon­Mo­bil pipeline dis­as­ter has made clear, Gov­er­nor Schweitzer is attempt­ing to turn Mon­tana into an extrac­tion state, while at the same time pub­licly pro­claim­ing his sup­posed sup­port for clean ener­gy, pro­tect­ing the envi­ron­ment and build­ing healthy com­mu­ni­ties. It’s one or the oth­er. You can’t be clean and dirty at the same time,” accord­ing to Bozeman’s Eri­ca Dos­sa, who also took part in the action.

Earth First! was named in 1979 in response to a lethar­gic, com­pro­mis­ing and increas­ing­ly cor­po­rate envi­ron­men­tal com­mu­ni­ty. Earth First! takes a decid­ed­ly dif­fer­ent approach towards envi­ron­men­tal issues by using all the tools in the tool­box, rang­ing from grass­roots orga­niz­ing and involve­ment in the legal process to civ­il dis­obe­di­ence. North­ern Rock­ies Ris­ing Tide is the Mis­soula based chap­ter off the inter­na­tion­al, decen­tral­ized, grass­roots move­ment Ris­ing Tide. They are an all-vol­un­teer net­work of groups and indi­vid­u­als who pro­mote local, com­mu­ni­ty-based solu­tions to the cli­mate cri­sis and take direct actions to con­front the root caus­es of cli­mate change.

Camp Frack will take place adja­cent to the UK’s first frack­ing oper­a­tions at Sin­gle­ton, near Black­pool (near­est train sta­tion Poul­ton Le Fylde). It will be organ­ised with the sup­port of a local farmer who is pro­vid­ing the land. It will involve locals, grass­roots groups, indi­vid­u­als and NGO’s in work­shops and dis­cus­sions on shale gas and on form­ing effec­tive UK wide resis­tance against it. It will involve rais­ing local aware­ness about the prob­lems with shale gas and an action day of protest against the drilling activ­i­ties cur­rent­ly in progress in the Black­pool area.

On Tues­day 5th July activists from the Telford no new coal (aka Defend Hunt­ing­ton Lane) protest site halt­ed ear­ly morn­ing oper­a­tions by storm­ing the open cast mine. Two pro­test­ers dead locked on to heavy plant machin­ery, dis­rupt­ing the destruc­tion caused by them. Activists have been on the site for 15 months and are await­ing evic­tion papers.
