Frack Off! 500 ft high Banner Drop Off Blackpool Tower

6.08.2011

6.08.2011
Early Saturday morning anti-fracking [1] campaigners climbed 500 feet to hang two banners [2] from the iconic Blackpool Tower raising awareness about the dangers of hydraulic fracturing for shale gas spreading to the UK. The two climbers was were later arrested by police when they descended, but not before having their lives risked by Blackpool Tower workers who attacked them with a pressure washer while they dangled hundreds of feet above the ground.

Blackpool Tower is five miles east of the first fracking test well in the UK. The group is highlighting the issue and launch of an anti-fracking direct action campaign centred around the website http://www.frack-off.org

Nathan Roberts, one of the climbers, said “There are so many things wrong with this unconventional method of gas extraction, it’s hard to know where to start! It has been linked with poisoned water supplies, earthquakes, leaking gas and even radioactive contamination – and that’s before you even get to the effect it will have on the climate. It’s unbelievable that they think they can get away with it. We can’t let this happen.”

Sami Jones, another climber, said “We hear a lot about energy shortages, but really we need to be investing in researching sustainable energy sources, rather than finding tiny pockets of non-renewable gas and destroying our planet in order to get to them.”

He continued, “The UK fracking industry is in its infancy. We must act now if we are to stop it in its tracks. It’s bad for Lancashire, it’s bad for the UK and it’s bad for the planet.”

Cuadrilla Resources [3] have been forced to temporarily suspend their exploratory test site at Preese Hall test well [4], near Blackpool following the outcry over two earthquakes in the vicinity, have in the meantime drilled another well and are presently moving their drilling rig to a third site. France, the states of New York and New Jersey, the Canadian province of Quebec and the Swiss canton of Fribourg have all recently banned fracking. Fracking needs to be stopped in the UK.

Notes:
[1] Hydraulic Fracturing (or ‘fracking’) is a method used to free otherwise inaccessible gas trapped in rock. Wells are drilled and ‘fracking fluid,’ consisting of millions of gallons of water, sand and a toxic cocktail of patented chemicals, is injected into the rock under high pressure to crack it. Some of these chemicals are known carcinogens and many are never recovered ( http://1.usa.gov/ftCV8J).
Fracking fluid also leaches radioactive elements and toxic chemicals like arsenic out of the rocks making disposing of the fluid a big problem. Fracking in the United States has already resulted in numerous spills of these fluids. Contaminated irrigation water could affect food supplies. Geologists have found a correlation between earthquakes and Fracking ( http://www.sott.net/articles/show/232634-US-Fracking-Operations-Cause-Thousands-of-Earthquakes-in-Arkansas).[2] The banner reads “FRACKING IS COMING TO THE UK. WE CAN STOP IT. WWW.FRACK-OFF.ORG”.
[3] Cuadrilla is a Shale Gas Exploration & Production Company ( http://www.cuadrillaresources.com)
[4] Preese Hall Test Well ‘is the second earthquake to strike Lancashire since April, and experts say it may be a result of the controversial practice, a process of drilling for natural shale gas which involves injecting water and rock-dissolving fluids underground at extremely high pressure to break apart hard shale rocks and release gas.Cuadrilla Resources, the company carrying out the fracking at Preese Hall, Weeton, close to the Fylde coast, said it had suspended operations to examine data collected by the British Geological Survey before deciding whether it was safe to resume. Neither quake was large enough to cause any structural damage’ ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/jun/01/blackpool-earthquake-tremors-gas-drilling)

Fantastic week of blocking Shell

3rd August 2011

3rd August 2011
This week saw Shell begin the next stage of their gas project by attempting to extend and secure their compound in Aughoose in preparation to lay the onshore section of the pipeline. This entailed tractors delivering fencing, machinery and other things for them to carry out the work. If all had gone to plan would have had the compound near completion now. However, there was five days of 12 hour blockades which has slowed them down tremendously. Here’s a quick round up of the events of last week…

The week started Monday 25th July at 7am with a tripod which lasted over five hours. The protester was removed using scaffolding. The afternoon was spent causing chaos on bikes and on foot with the cops eventually needing to seize bikes in order to stop the protesters. At most ten tractors made the journey to the compound, all having been delayed. Shell made a statement on the radio that their work had been “severely impeded”. Not bad for the first day.

At 7am on Tuesday there was an arm tube lock-on which lasted well over an hour. No arrests were made. Only 2 tractors made it into the compound before midday. The rest of the day was spent hiding in ditches and jumping out in front of and onto tractors with one person spending over an hour and a half on top of a tractor before being forcibly removed and arrested. Shell had still had less than 20 deliveries to the compound so far in the week.

Wednesday saw an 8 hour lock-on from 7am. Two individuals were arrested under public order charges. The Gardai (police) had stepped up their ‘protection’ of the tractors and were providing a tight convoy for each tractor. At some points there was two paddy wagons, two squad cars, a cutting team, an IRMS jeep and detective Brett Nolan’s undercover vehicle escorting each tractor. The Gardai were being ordered to get out of their vehicles and run alongside the tractor in order to try and stop the people hopping aboard. Despite this people were able to mount most tractors that went by and less than ten tractors made their deliveries by 7pm.

On Thursday the first tractor was stopped by someone climbing onto the cab. Pleasingly this lasted for two and a half hours, with the individual managing to jump the fence and get away without being arrested. With some fine communication and coordination, as the next tractor made its journey from the refinery to the new compound a group created a decoy by appearing to attempt to get on the tractor. However unbeknown to the cops this was merely a distraction as the tripod was being set up just a couple of hundred metres up the road. After the sounds of a battle cry in the distance the group of protesters causing chaos responded and ran up the road with the Gardai looking somewhat baffled. As the tripod was established a call went out to another group who were situated over in Crossmolina (a town 45 minutes from the camp)where the scaffolding firm are based. They blockaded the scaffolding firms gates for a couple of hours. No arrests were made. The tripod was eventually dismantled at around 3pm so people gathered at the refinery gates. Numbers grew and morale was high. When the next tractor was brought out chaos ensued. One protester climbed on the cab and after 20 minutes was forcibly removed and arrested. This was followed by another protester climbing underneath the same tractor. They were removed after about 15 minutes but managed to avoid arrest. This was followed by a rolling blockade on the road with people sitting down, being removed then sitting straight back down. After about 40 minutes the tractor reversed back into the refinery. The elation among folk was amazing. The cops looking defeated got in their vehicles and left. There was real celebration with a feeling that this had been one of the strongest days of the campaign. It was 5.15pm and work wasn’t due to finish until 7pm. A group stayed at the refinery to ensure nothing came out…it didn’t. Two trucks made deliveries on Thursday.

Friday was the mass day of action. Due to this Shell had already cancelled work for the day. Protesters made their way down to the compound at around 9.30. Some protesters made it into the compound whilst others tore down fences. There was a huge Gardai presence and approximately 80 IRMS (Shell’s private security). A second attempt was made later in the day to pull down more fences which ended in several people being hurt and requiring hospital treatment. Despite this people remained at the compound , many spending the afternoon playing music and relaxing on the road. Despite the injuries it was felt it was a great day and that by having the day of action our work was already done as Shell didn’t work.

Shell’s first week of work did not go to plan. After studying their traffic management plan , which outlines their predicted truck movements over the 26 month period that they intend to complete the project, it appears that at this stage their aim was to be making 159 truck movements per day! Last week in total they had approximately 40.

There feels like a real buzz in the campaign at the moment! The Gardaí are appearing stretched and are using up a lot of their resources. They are having to change their tactics daily and despite their efforts and ludicrous protection of Shell’s vehicles protesters are still managing to cause huge disruption.

If people can come up,now really feels like the time! To maintain this strong resistance we need people and ideas. There is so much to do on camp at the moment. Not only is there protests but camp life is always busy and full of things to do.

At 6.59 this morning a tripod was erected by people from Rossport Solidarity Camp on the road between Shell’s Ballinaboy refinery and their compound at Aughosse thereby blockading the road to all incoming trucks. Shell were due to move the first lot of fencing from one site to another at 7am in order to prepare and enlarge the existing compound in preparation for turf removal before pipe laying, but instead the truck of fencing now sits behind a line of 30 IRMS security with nowhere to go. Meanwhile the head of IRMS, Jim Farrell, can be seen making frantic phone calls.

Shell delayed again – 2nd day
27.07.2011
A variety of actions have been taking place all day in order to delay Shell’s expansion and securing of their new compound. Protests and blockades from 7am to 7pm

On Tuesday 26th July the actions against Shell’s proposed high pressure gas pipeline began at 7am in the morning with 6 people blocking the road with an arm tube lock on. No arrests were made. This was followed by multiple blockades of tractors and equipment bound for the Aughoose compound. Currently Shell are working on securing their compound by putting up stronger fences, laying bog mats and bringing in machinery. This is in preparation for the peat removal from the area in order to begin laying the pipe.

People have been climbing up on the back of flat bed trailers and on top of various tractors and trucks. One person was on top of a tractor for over an hour and a half before being forcibly removed and arrested by the Gardai (police) who have been traveling in convoy ‘protecting’ the tractors all day.

Only 2 loads were successfully delivered to the compound before midday. This afternoon has seen continuous disruption of the deliveries, with people hiding along the road and jumping out/on the convoy to force it to stop.

One local person successfully blocked the road by climbing up on top of a lorry directly in front of the compound.

Its been another long and amazing day. It is becoming clear that the Gardaí are finding the intensity of the protests frustrating and that they seem reluctant to make arrests. It remains to be seen whether they will be able to keep this level of policing up but it is clearly exhausting all of their resources.

This is a critical time in the the campaign and to keep this kind of protests going we need more people! There is a mass Day of Action this Friday 29th July. If you can come up sooner or stay for longer it would be great!

Mayo – Shell’s construction stopped for fifth consecutive day

— Campaigners blockading heavy vehicles prevent construction of Shell’s onshore pipeline — Press release from earlier today – more details from today plus photos to follow as soon as the folk involved catch their breath!

This morning, 28th of July 2011, campaigners again successfully stopped the first haulage of the day from Shell’s refinery at Ballinaboy to the proposed tunneling compound at Aughoose, Erris. Co. Mayo. Two people climbed on top of the tractor carrying materials for the construction site at 7.05am. The campaigners are currently blocking all further Shell transport for the fifth consecutive work day since Shell attempted to start peat removal on Friday the 22nd of July.

The first blockade of the day lasted for over two hours. At 9.45 a tripod blockade was erected on the same stretch of road, which is currently blocking Shell’s haulage. Continuous blockades can be expected until 7pm this evening. Three arrests were made yesterday. There have been no arrests so far today.

Local resident Betty Schultz protesting this morning at Ballinaboy, said “Tomorrow’s Day of Action marks our continuing opposition to the disruption of the community and the unique environment we live in. Now is the time to support the community of Erris in their campaign. Ireland can’t afford to give away its natural resources.”

People from around Ireland are answering this SOS call from Erris, and many are expected to arrive this afternoon and this evening to be ready for a mass Day of Action tomorrow, Friday the 29th of July. In advance of the mass action tomorrow, local women gathered at the entrance to Ballinaboy this morning from 7am to show that Shell do not have the community consent.

Glenamoy resident Mary Horan at Ballinaboy gates said “While in Ireland we are closing our hospitals due to lack of funds, Shell have today announced profits of 13 billion euros. Shell’s profits announced this morning are sickening to this community whose health and safety has been sacrificed for Shell’s shareholders. Neither Shell nor Enda Kenny can hide the injustice being done to Ireland. We will be here until justice is done.”

Gathering Feedback Show

——————–

Kids’ space and activities

If you do not have a kid, we might still need your help, so read
on…….

The kids’ space is designed as a place where children and those caring for them can relax, play and eat. The space contains books, toys and craft materials.

The kids’ space is NOT a creche and doesn’t have staff or facilities to care for children.

Parents and carers are respectfully reminded that they will need to collect children at meal times/breaks and that they much keep adults in the kids space informed of where they can be found; please also fill in the forms in the kids kitchen regarding food allergies etc.

If you do not have a child at the gathering, but would like to help in kids space, please talk to the collective. Help with reading stories, playing games, art and crafts always welcome.

Kid’s kitchen

This provides meals suitable for and at appropriate times for children. Kids meal tickets cost £2 or £3 a day for 2 meals (the lower rate is for toddlers); please buy these at the gate tent. This is the first time we have sold kids meal tickets and hopefully this will cover the cost of meals, but we may need to ask for help if this is not enough to cover our costs.

Even those without children can help by with cooking and washing up in the kids space, please volunteer if you can.

Games and activities

During the morning (approx 10 am -noon) there will be activities and workshops for kids in one of the workshop spaces.

In the afternoon (after lunch), there will be games in the top meadow for children and adults together. Again, any help with these very welcome – just ask the collective/kids space crew.

Public Transport

The site is easily accessible by public transport, you can get the train either to Diss or Norwich and then catch the bus route no 1 (Simmonds) from Diss to Norwich. Or you could walk or cycle – it’s only 1.5miles away from Diss train station. Please come by public transport if at all possible! .

We will run pick-ups from the train station for anybody who can’t use the bus service or for larger groups of people. If you need a lift please let us know well in advance (and not in the middle of the night, when you’re at a train station somewhere!). !

Wheelchair users intending to use Diss station will need to book assistance with the train operator. There are no lifts so station staff have to assist mobility impaired customers across the track. Apparently the station is not manned 24 hours a day and the gate for the crossing is kept locked – so do phone and book to be sure .We have been told the bus service includes some low-floor buses with easy access for pushchairs, people with mobility impairments etc.

Hitch to Norwich or Diss; from Norwich hitch south on the A140 to Dickleburgh. It is then a 3 -4 mile walk or hitch to the site; on the Dickleburgh bypass (don’t go into Dickleburgh village) is a right turn to Shimpling and Burston; follow this road through Burston village, past the village green and out of the village. There is a sharp left turn, then down a hill to a sharp right turn. Site is on the right just over a little brick bridge.

From Diss either walk or bus, or carry on up the A140 to the turning on the Dickleburgh junction as above (only this time the junction is on the left).

The convictions of 20 climate activists were quashed by the Court of Appeal on Wednesday. The 20 had been convicted of conspiracy to commit aggravated trespass at Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station, in December last year. However, revelations about the withholding of evidence gathered by undercover police officer Mark Kennedy led to the Director of Public Prosecutions requesting an independent review into the safety of the prosecutions. Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, said the convictions had been a miscarriage of justice.

Activists’ statement

We are 20 of the 114 people who were preemptively arrested near E.ON’s Ratcliffe-on-Soar coal power station over two years ago. During our trial last year we argued that our plan to safely shut down the power station was necessary in order to protect the ever escalating numbers of people dying as a result of climate change. We later found out our trial was rigged by the police and CPS to get convictions.

Through placing undercover officers in our movement, using mass preemptive arrest and rigging our trial, the state has deliberately attempted to silence dissenting voices. This quelling of dissent, now repeated in the young people facing prison for protesting against the attacks on public services, is fundamentally undemocratic. It is yet another example of those in power protecting their own interests. Whether it’s E.ON Energy or News International, the government and police have a track record of colluding with big business. We need to look at the root causes of climate change, and ask why the profits of corporations such as E.ON are being prioritised over future generations, and the millions already on the front line of our changing climate. Taking action on climate change is not an act of moral righteousness, its about protecting our future. History is full of examples of ordinary people acting to defend their rights and those of others, and we need a strong movement of people doing just that. Winning this appeal is just one small victory in the fight against the systemically political nature of policing. We stand in solidarity with all those have suffered injustice from the state or face repression for daring to take political action.

Activists Occupy Montana Capitol Building vs Tar Sands

Breaking News: Activists Occupy Montana Capitol Building Demanding Governor Schweitzer Publicly Oppose Keystone XL Pipeline and Tar Sands Megaload Shipments

Activists from across the nation and around the world join Montana and Idaho residents in demanding that Schweitzer finally stand up to “Big Oil.”

On the morning of July 12th, six activists from Earth First! and Northern Rockies Rising Tide have risked arrest by occupying Governor Schweitzer’s office in an act of non-violent civil disobedience. The activists have locked their arms in a mock oil pipeline made out of PVC plastic pipe. In the wake of the Silvertip spill, Governor Schweitzer has publicly chastised Exxon Mobil, while simultaneously continuing to promote the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, megaload shipments bound for the Alberta Tar Sands and other extreme fossil fuel projects throughout the state.

“If the Governor has his way, Montana will be transformed into what is essentially an energy extraction colony for Big Oil. The Silvertip spill is simply a short preview of what this would mean for the lives and livelihood of all Montanans,” says Great Falls native Peter Dolan, one of the eight occupying the office.

Activists inside the Capitol are also demanding that Schweitzer stand up to TransCanada and other international criminal organizations by publicly opposing Alberta Tar Sands exportation. This project is widely known as the most destructive energy process on the planet by leading environmental organizations. According to a recent report by University of Nebraska-Lincoln engineering professor John Stansbury, neither TransCanada nor the regulators evaluating the proposed Keystone XL pipeline have properly considered the risks. Stansbury said TransCanada underestimated both the frequency of spills on the pipeline and the severity of the worst-case scenario spills.

“As the recent ExxonMobil pipeline disaster has made clear, Governor Schweitzer is attempting to turn Montana into an extraction state, while at the same time publicly proclaiming his supposed support for clean energy, protecting the environment and building healthy communities. It’s one or the other. You can’t be clean and dirty at the same time,” according to Bozeman’s Erica Dossa, who also took part in the action.

Earth First! was named in 1979 in response to a lethargic, compromising and increasingly corporate environmental community. Earth First! takes a decidedly different approach towards environmental issues by using all the tools in the toolbox, ranging from grassroots organizing and involvement in the legal process to civil disobedience. Northern Rockies Rising Tide is the Missoula based chapter off the international, decentralized, grassroots movement Rising Tide. They are an all-volunteer network of groups and individuals who promote local, community-based solutions to the climate crisis and take direct actions to confront the root causes of climate change.

Join the resistance to the “fracking” invasion! Stop the massive expansion of shale gas extraction in the UK! We need renewables and powerdown – not another source of fossil fuel!

Camp Frack will take place adjacent to the UK’s first fracking operations at Singleton, near Blackpool (nearest train station Poulton Le Fylde). It will be organised with the support of a local farmer who is providing the land. It will involve locals, grassroots groups, individuals and NGO’s in workshops and discussions on shale gas and on forming effective UK wide resistance against it. It will involve raising local awareness about the problems with shale gas and an action day of protest against the drilling activities currently in progress in the Blackpool area.

More details will be circulated in August regarding venue etc. To be kept up to date or for any questions email campfrack@gmail.com

on why to oppose fracking and potential drilling sites in the UK, see http://nofrackinguk.com/
