Eco flyerHello friends,

In this report:

News of the upcoming Eco-Village occupation taking place on a disused piece of land near Hammersmith starting on Saturday, 6th June (see attached e‑flyer for details).

The latest from the Tyting community farm occupation — information on how you can get involved and support the action.

And some interesting facts about the land in Britain.

ECO-VILLAGE OCCUPATION

The Eco village occupation begins on the 6th June. Meet at Waterloo Station at 10AM under the clock. Please try to be on time.

********Please Note**********

If you are coming for the opening stage of the eco-village occupation, you will need to bring a tent, water and food supplies. If you have access to kitchen equipment and other useful tat that you would be OK to loan, please bring it along too.

***************************

The Eco-Village Occupation is about to begin. Infinite possibilities lie ahead; what will happen depends on what we make it. By creating a sustainable community in the heart of the urban jungle, we have an opportunity to raise the consciousness of urban dwellers all around and shine a light on a way of living that goes far to solving the problem of the destruction of people and planet.

During the last public planning meeting, we had consensus on the following issues:

- A no vehicle on site policy. In order to maximize living space and encourage people to come to the village via sustainable means.

- Acoustic music only. So that we don’t make enemies of the neighbours.

- All major decisions in the eco-village to be decided via the consensual decision making of all the people in the eco-village.

Please come along and join us. Ideally, we are looking for committed people who share in the vision of the eco-village community and who are able to commit for an indefinite period, however if you simply want to stay for a night or two or even visit for a day, please feel free to come along.

This eco-village occupation is inspired by The Land is Ours which campaigns peacefully for access to the land, its resources, and the decision-making processes affecting them, for everyone, irrespective of race, gender or age. for more information, please visit:

Tyting Community Farm Occupation.

Six weeks ago a group of people (some fresh from the Raven’s Ait occupation in Kingston) asserting their common law right to live and grow food, commenced the occupation of Tyting Community Farm in Half Penny Lane Guildford. (a publicly owned site which has been vacant for several years).

Guildford council (the owner of the property) has been trying without success and with much local opposition to sell the community farm off by dividing it into smaller lots.

The council were granted an ‘interim possession order’ last Wednesday (27th May) and threatened to send in the police to remove anyone still on the site. On Friday morning, various contractors arrived and boarded up the farmhouse (but no police).

Far from denting their morale, the threat of forceful eviction has simply made those enjoying life at the farm more determined to stay their ground.

To see a video of what’s been happening at the farm please click here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKe_uCHpokU

This occupation is open to anyone who would like to be part of the community, grow vegetables and live in a sustainable way, whilst helping to retain common rights to a valuable and beautiful piece of common land. If you want to get involved, simply grab a tent and some food (plus some seeds if you have them) and come along. Here is a map of the location of the farm.

Facts about the land in Britain

did you know that.…

In Britain 70% of land is still owned by less than 1% of the population
Less than 8% of the country is under concrete
50% of the land in England and Wales remains unregistered
the Church of England has ‘mislaid’ 1.5 million acres it owned 100 years ago
the Royal Family now own or control the equivalent of an average-sized county in England.

71 arrested in Copenhagen resisting the World Business Summit on Climate Change

24th May 2009

Our Climate - Not Your BusinessApproaching climate business summit24th May 2009
Protesters clashed with police in Copenhagen today while attempting to disrupt the World Business Summit on Climate Change, a gathering of the worlds largest corporations and, not coincidentally, biggest polluters. Organized by the Danish government, the Business Summit gave corporate interests unprecedented access to the ongoing UN climate talks, including face time with UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon and so called climate “hero” Al Gore.

The group of protestors, lead by a banner reading “Our Climate is not Your Business” attempted to breach police lines in order to disrupt the meeting. The lively group of activists wanted hightlight the damaging and disruptive role that corporations play in the international climate talks. The list of corporations attending included #1 carbon emitter in the world Shell Oil, Duke Energy (#12 at last count), and BP among other climate criminals.

“The Danish government appears to be under the impression that some of the world’s most polluting companies are going to put forward tough measures to tackle climate change,” said Kenneth Haar, a researcher with Corporate Europe Observatory. “But unfortunately this doesn’t seem likely to be the case. The majority of the corporations attending the World Business Summit on Climate Change seem more intent on pursuing business as usual – with the promise that future technologies will resolve the problem at a later date.

“Corporate lobbyists have been trying to influence the UN climate talks from the start. But now they are being invited to set the agenda before the negotiators have even sat down. If their demands are listened to, we might as well give up the fight against climate change now.”

The WBSCC draws into question the legitimacy of the UN climate talks. How can we trust a process that opens the door to the very corporations that created the climate crisis, while shutting out the worlds poor, indigenous, and land based

peoples who are least responsible for climate change, yet will bare the brunt of its impacts?

Co-mutiny flyerCapitalism and its puppet de‘mock’cracy are spiralling out of control:a self-created recession, rocketing unemployment, soaring national debt, the illegal and unjust occupation of Afghanistan & Iraq, apathy towards massacres in Palestine and Sri Lanka, the criminalisation of free movement, the police assaults and murders of people on the streets, the construction of larger airports and coal-fired power stations in the face of devastating environmental degradation, the privatisation of social housing, the list goes on.

But there is hope. There are anti government protests from Greece to Paris, and China to London, as well as factory and school occupations across the U.K. World wide there are growing, active, and increasingly angry radical & working class movements standing up and resisting climate chaos, oppression, poverty, insecurity and state control.

Hand-in-hand with these protests are grassroots actions to build a new society and take control of our own lives. Ordinary people are finding ways to help each other in the face of the credit crisis created by the banks and corporations. We are re-learning old skills and learning new ones for the transition to a just society; enabling us to create community gardens, establish housing, food and worker’s co-ops, and use new economics in the neighbourhoods where we live

In Bristol and surrounds, a diverse bunch of enraged creative, dreamers and schemers, builders and gardeners, workers, students and unemployed have been drawn together by the common threads of our indignation at how a combination of corporate greed, social injustice and environmental degradation is leading us all towards climate chaos and financial collapse.

We invite you to converge on Bristol for an uprising of autonomous actions and events from 12th – 20th of September 2009.

The themes for those events and days of action are:

* Freedom of movement (surveillance, migration)
* Anti-militarism (Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Palestine, Filton)
* Climate justice (Just transition, financing of climate chaos, coal, airports)
* Financial collapse / community growth (role of banks, creating a new economy)
* Work (Workers’ solidarity, co-operative working, workplace occupations)
* Food (animal rights, sustainable food production, permaculture)
* Autonomous spaces (gentrification, housing, squatting)

The Co-Mutineers will be organising actions and events but we need you to get involved, wherever you are from and whatever your experience.

We encourage autonomous actions. Come on down, join the mutiny, get in touch!

Scottish Climate Camp 3–10 August — details

“Global ecosystems are in collapse, species extinction is unparalleled in human history and dangerous climate change is a reality affecting us all. There is no time to act but now. Join us 3–10 August for a week of low-impact living and high-impact direct action.”

There is no time to act but now. Join us 3–10 August for a week of low-impact living and high-impact direct action.”

The camp will be set up somewhere around the Firth of Forth in central scotland — surrounded by coal-fired power stations, gas and oil refineries, coal ports, open cast coal mines, corporate HQs, an airport, a nuclear power station, a cement factory and oil terminals.

This camp will cut carbon emissions. Climate Camp Scotland will raise the profile of direct action in Scotland, showing that the nature of the climate crisis is such that we no longer have time to wait for our political and business ‘leaders’ to act for us.

In addition, we aim to radicalise the political analysis of climate change and its solutions, placing it within a wider political context of social change and the reshaping of society towards more egalitarian and libertarian values.

Join us in August to take action against the root causes of climate change!

Boiling Over — Scotland’s Gathering for Climate Action: 11th — 14th June, The Phoenix Centre, Glasgow

Boiling Over will be a space for thought, analysis, learning, movement building, training and creativity. Ultimately, we hope to develop a strategy for stopping climate change from within Scotland.

Social Change not Climate Change

Despite years of rhetoric about Climate Change Bills, Kyoto Protocols, Technofixes and Sustainability, CO2 emissions are still rising, ecosystems are still collapsing and society is as unequal as ever. This is testimony to the fact that we need to take matters into our own hands and find bottom up solutions to climate chaos.

What’s happening?

The programme will include four days of talks, film showings and discussion, culminating in planning and visioning sessions. We will skill-share practical skills such as cooking for large numbers of people and direct action trainings which will lay the foundations for the Camp for Climate Action happening in Scotland from 3–10 of August.

The gathering is a great chance to see the area (really really beautiful), find out what’s really going on, and to meet the people involved — campaigners, locals, cats.

Also, music, workshops, surfing, kayaking, food (including seaweed).

Preparation is going on now, and it feels exciting.

Last year, when shell tried to lay the RAW gas pipeline, the people resisted all summer. Eventually, the solitaire (the biggest pipe laying ship in the world) was forced to fuck off, with its tail between its legs.

This year they will try again, and it is the special blend of locals, and activists, from near and far, that have kept them away so far.

Come and see what it’s like when all types of people coming together for a common cause. Shell is so powerful, please come along and help.

ps. if you can’t make it for the gathering, you are welcome any time you like through the summer, even if it’s only for a day or two.

pps. please spread the word; emailing, texting, talking about rossport and the gathering.

Hoping to see you here!

Galwegian’s are Reclaiming it’s Streets (Eire)

May 17, 2009

Galway RTSMay 17, 2009
Yesterday afternoon, Galwegians and their friends from around the country and world came together on newly renamed (by us), Anti-Shop Street, to take back our space from the capitalist, consumerist culture which has taken over, with it’s bizarre ideas of a life dedicated to shopping, spending, buying and profit, so that we could share an experience of another world, where everything is free, people share and give food, fun, stuff and life, simply because they can and it just feels good!

“Free Food, Free Stuff, Free Fun, Free Social Interaction, Free World for Everyone”, was the chant of the day, encouraging everyone to join in the fun. ‘Feck Money’ could also be heard every now and again, amongst the joyful shouting and whooping! The event started at 1.30pm, when a ‘Really Really Free Market’, magically appeared out of nowhere; clothes, videos, toys, teddies, cards, matches, markers, crayons, zines and more were all decked out on a table and offered to bemused passers-by for free. Confused by the idea of free stuff, those who were afraid to ask were left wondering ‘what’s the catch?’ Needless to say, there was none. Just a group of people who believe in a better world where gifts can be given freely, and the only profit sought is the joy of making others happy. They were promptly joined by Galway Food-Not-Bombs, (who share vegetarian food, messages of peace and a better society, with the public), to feed the participants and onlookers with lovely vegetarian soup, bread and amazing cookies at the REAL recession busting price of no euros and no sense! Participants decorated Anti-Shop street with colourfull banners letting people know “Another World is Possible”, encouraging them to “Spend Less, Give More”, inviting them to “Celebrate Our Streets” and one suggesting that we should just “Feck Money!” Others decorated the ground, chalking messages such as “Capitalism Kills”, until the Gardai informed them it was illegal!

Galway Shell to Sea, who know all about the urgent need to reclaim control over our own lives, environment and resources, came out to participate and spread the word about the Rossport Solidarity Camp’s June Bank Holiday Gathering, coming up on May 29th.
Entertainment was abundant with random individuals showing off and teaching their juggling and poi skills, traditional Irish music, Capoeira dancing with accompanying music, people playing chess, others blowing bubbles, DIY art with home-made natural paints. And, how better to interact and have fun on our streets then to play Twister! Plus lots of other fun and random stuff…

It was about two hours before traffic wardens arrived to try and kill the fun. Unable to give out parking tickets, due to our inconsiderate lack of licence plate numbers, they made a poor attempt at taking our Twister. Then the Gardai were called in to deal with our menacing antics. The first Garda on the scene told us we had to move the Twister because we were blocking the street. We politely refused and argued that these were our streets and people seemed to be getting by just fine. Shortly thereafter, five to six guards huddled on the opposite corner, obviously a bit unsure of what they should or could do. They no doubt were grateful when the free water arrived in abundance from the sky. Not ready to give up just yet we continued on playing wet Twister for twenty minutes, taking full advantage of all the free water before wrapping it all up with a lot of cheering, clapping and a great sense of achievement. We had Reclaimed the Street if only for a few hours and we’ll do it again and again and again.…

McDonalds Protester Found “Not Guilty”!

See http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/cambridge/2008/06/401637.html for more on the case and to see a video of the protest in question.

The protest was in commemoration of the now famous Mclibel cases anniversary, that was a huge PR disaster for McDonalds. The protesters entered the restaurant and informed customers about issues regarding McDonalds corporate practices on a range of issues. One of the campaigners was then arrested under Section 5 of the Public Order Act.

This is a small victory for the animal rights movement that has been under increasing state repression. “Lets take this as a collective lift to our self-esteem” said the cleared activist “I’m Mcloving it!”.

The case has dragged on but it finally came to an end with the magistrate finding the defendant not guilty “Animal rights activism may have been covertly outlawed in the UK” said the activist “but it seems not everyone has read the memo yet!”.

The campaigners Barrister put forward an excellent case with the help of the brilliant defence witnesses. As the Not Guilty verdict was read out the supporters in the public gallery began to applaud!

Orissa Tribes stage mass protest against British mining company Vedanta — 25 April 2009

Several hundred tribespeople today staged a protest against FTSE-100 company Vedanta, as it bids massively to expand its controversial aluminium refinery in Lanjigarh, Orissa. The refinery occupies land belonging to the Majhi Kondh tribe, and lies at the foot of the Niyamgiri hills, home of the isolated Dongria Kondhs. Both tribes took part in the protests.

Over a hundred families lost their homes to their refinery. Many more lost their farm land and with it their food-security and self sufficiency.

Vedanta’s refinery expansion project is integrally linked to its plan to mine the Dongria Kondh’s mountain home. Vedanta’s mine is needed to provide the refinery with a nearby, and cost efficient, source of bauxite – the raw material for aluminium.

One Dongria Kondh man said, ‘Mining only makes profit for the rich. We will become beggars if the company destroys our mountain and our forest so that they can make money. We cannot give our mountain, it is our life. And other tribes will also suffer, those who live on the rivers that come from our mountain.’

Today’s protest is just the latest in a string of demonstrations against Vedanta’s activities.

Indians blockade main Amazon tributary — 24 April 2009

A large number of Indians have blockaded one of the Amazon’s main tributaries, the Napo River, in response to the violation of their rights by oil companies and Peru’s government.

A large number of Indians have blockaded one of the Amazon’s main tributaries, the Napo River, in response to the violation of their rights by oil companies and Peru’s government.

The protesters have blockaded the Napo with canoes and a cable to stop oil company vessels getting upriver. According to sources, two boats, including one from the Anglo-French company Perenco, have managed to break through the blockade. Three shots were allegedly fired at the Indians who chased after them.

The blockade of the Napo River is just one of many protests currently taking place across the Peruvian Amazon. Coordinated by Peru’s Amazon Indian organisation, AIDESEP, the protests are in response to government policies seen by the Indians as discriminatory and threatening to their communal lands. AIDESEP is lobbying for the repeal of several laws they claim violate their rights, and for the creation of new reserves for uncontacted tribes.

The government has responded by sending police and soldiers to areas where protests are taking place. AIDESEP has criticised these measures, calling them ‘intimidation’ and saying that the protests are peaceful.

Perenco is working in a part of the Amazon inhabited by two of the world’s last uncontacted tribes. The company does not acknowledge the tribes exist.

Survival’s director Stephen Corry said today, ‘All over the world tribal peoples are being forced to resort to blockades to try and protect their remaining land. We’re seeing this in India and Malaysia as well as South America.’

JNC Squats Resist Double Eviction

The two occupied social centres operating under the Justice Not Crisis banner discovered on Monday that they were both to be evicted on the same day — Tuesday 21 April. This was not to be, thanks to a spirited resistance from the squatters and supporters.

conservation areaThe two occupied social centres operating under the Justice Not Crisis banner discovered on Monday that they were both to be evicted on the same day — Tuesday 21 April. This was not to be, thanks to a spirited resistance from the squatters and supporters. To successfully defend one squat can be considered fortunate; to defend two in one morning begins to seem miraculous. It just goes to show that the powers that be are far from infallible, and that solid peaceful direct action can bring major benefits for the community. The squats however remain on high eviction alert, and request all supporters to mobilise. Come down, even if for an hour, and help keep these facilities open for workers, for the environment and for the community.
Notice of a Tuesday eviction for the Social Justice Centre at 318 Pershore Road was given some days in advance. This was however thrown into doubt after the legal owners, Warwickshire Cricket Club, suddenly found themselves without a promised loan of £20 million from Birmingham’s council leaders [see: http://www.birminghampost.net/news/west-midlands-news/2009/04/17/council-s-20m-funding-offer-for-edgbaston-cricket-ground-blocked-65233–23404529] and speculation was rife that they may wish to open negotiations with the squatters to rent the building after losing such major finance. The Centre houses several homeless people, many were rough sleepers, and successfully managed, with others, by a person who was formerly sleeping rough on Brummie streets. It also houses part of the Birmingham People’s Library, a long running initiative given new life by the squat, as well as providing a venue for various social and cultural activities including advice for benefit claimants.
The squatted former Beechwood Hotel and conservation area at 201 Bristol Road, meanwhile, lost its legal defence against a possession order by the private owners, Manor Coast Ltd (Proprietor: Mr Kang) in the High Court on April 17th. This squat, as well as providing a similar facility to the Social Justice Centre, also has a conscious ecological focus. This is because the extensive grounds form part of a nature conservation area, which seems irrelevant to the owners and former managers. Mr Kang himself was convicted of illegally removing trees within it; there has also been dumping and burning of toxic waste on site. Suspicion is rife that Mr Kang is using a strategy familiar to landowners who find themselves saddled with inconvenient regulations in the public good — deliberate running down of the land so that it will lose its protected status. The owners will then be free to ‘develop’ the site in the interests of Capital and big business while destroying these important facilities. The occupiers are keen to turn this situation around and restore the grounds to proper ecological management, and are working with local stakeholders to this end. In the meantime, practical steps taken include the planting of a vegetable plot. There is a permaculture day planned for this Saturday 25th April during which further practical steps are to be taken as well as sharing skills in these areas, and all are welcome.
On Monday notice was received that both squats were to be evicted the following morning. The decision made to defend these buildings, supporters were mobilised and defences put in place. Bailiffs turned up first at 318 Pershore Road, at 9am and, after an hour or so of faff, moved people away from the front door and proceeded to break down the door and barricade, ignoring the lone squatter on the roof. Police in attendance confirmed that he was not causing a breach of the peace, even preventing him from coming down from the roof on health and safety grounds. It soon became apparent that without removing him, the Cricket Club had not legally taken possession of the building and after leaving the building was reoccupied by the squatters.
At Bristol Road, the same bailiffs attended at 11am with Mr Kang and a locksmith, and police. Here they were faced with up to eight people on the roof, and more inside the building. After 90 minutes of more faff, police left followed swiftly by bailiffs. Last to leave was the locksmith who had not even got out of his vehicle throughout.
After this somewhat unexpected double victory, the occupiers while jubilant remain on high eviction alert and request all supporters to come down to help defend the building from further attacks. It is a beautiful building and grounds and well worth keeping open. Meanwhile, the occupiers continue their request to negotiate some civil arrangement with the legal owners so that the work can continue.
Justice Not Crisis commented:
“This is a major victory for homeless people, residents and land conservation and we are obviously delighted with the result. We are also concerned that despite our requests we have had no communication with either WCCC or Mr Kang regarding our wish to rent the property and manage them properly paying rent to the respective owners. We will continue to attempt negotiations and hope to resolve the matter without causing the owners any more costs in instructing bailiffs.”
