2.5 Day street medic training:

9.30am — 6pm, Thurs 29th
9.30am — 6pm, Fri 30th
@ Aberystwyth (email for location)

UK Action Medics is a network of activists who have a range of medical skills, from first aid to qualified doctors. We want to ensure that ourselves and others are trained in the unique areas of medicine in protest situations (eg. CS gas and the working conditions) in addition to standard first aid.

We have two upcoming trainings.
ONE-DAY TRAINING
@ Bristol University, Students’ Union

This training will equip with basic first aid skills enabling you to look after yourself and your friends/comrades on actions/demos. These are skills which are also applicable in everyday life. The training includes role-plays where participants have the chance to practice skills under stress. It is also useful as a refresher if you have had previous first aid training/experience.

2.5 DAY TRAINING
in Aberystwyth
What this course is and is not:

* This is a 24-hour street medic training. We will cover the majority of the basic information and skills you will need to provide first aid at protests and direct actions.

** the training includes: working with a buddy, primary and secondary assessment, checking for Danger, Response, Airways, Breathing,
Circulation, Disability and surrounding Environment (DR ABCDE). Spinal immobilisation, basic woundcare, burncare, splinting, carrying patients with fractures, treating victims of chemical weapons (CS gas & pepper spray) attacks, hot & cold injuries, etc.

* This will not make you ready for anything. This course is a foundation in first aid and some practice. More diverse and deeper skill comes with time and practice as well as continuing education in health care.

* One thing we do not teach is Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). CPR is a great and sometimes necessary skill. But we do not cover it
here due to time constraints. The British Heart Foundation offer free “Heartstart” courses, see www.bhf.org.uk

* This is NOT a certificate course. You will receive no certifications or licenses of any kind.

COST:
We don’t make any profit from the trainings, the cost goes towards paying for venue hire, travel expenses for trainers, photocopying handouts and materials used throughout the day. The costs below are a guideline, and nobody will be turned away through lack of funds.

The one day training will cost up to £10 per person (tbc), although it is likely to be lower.

The 2.5 day training will cost up to £20 per person.

I you would like to come to either training or have any questions, please drop me an email on:

Week of Iceland Actions in the Low Countries

16.03.2007
This morning, Saving Iceland and the Dutch/Belgian environmentalist network GroenFront! built a dam blockading the entrance of the Icelandic Embassy in Brussels (photo-report). Earlier this week, a picketline was held at the Icelandic Consulate in Rotterdam and the folk singer Armand, the “Dutch Bob Dylan”, performed songs of praise to Icelandic nature. Last night, EarthFirst! closed down both ALCOA’s Dutch head office in Drunen and an ALCOA factory in Kerkrade, the Netherlands in opposition to heavy industry. The actions this week express growing international concern on the plans for expansion of the aluminium industry and megahydro in Iceland and other countries such as Trinidad and Brazil.

The ancient woodland is scheduled for decimation by National Grid to clear a path for the 48″ high pressure gas pipeline. The protesters aim to stop the destruction of yet more ancient woodland by National Grid and it’s contractors.

People on site are requesting any donations. Please send supplies of all sorts, especially beams for building, tarp, rope, nails, D‑locks, heavy chains, stuff for lock-ons (sand, cement, gravel.), harnesses and other climbing gear, scrap metal, cuddles etc etc etc.
We can use almost any tat…

The spring is springing, the flowers are starting to cover the woodland and it’s the most beautiful time of year. As National Grid are scheduled to be trashing this land in April, this is your last chance to see it.

DIRECTIONS:

The protest camp is in ancient woodland at Penpont, 4 miles west of Brecon on the A40 close to Bettws Penpont church. It is located at Ordnance Survey national grid reference SN9728728525. There is a bus going from Cardiff coach station to Brecon town (X43, takes aprox 1hr, costs around £4). From the bus stop you get off at in Brecon (the only one there) there is another bus that goes right past the camp (£1.60, aprox 10 mins- ask driver for tree camp, you will probably see banners).

Any questions, suggestions or proposals for the meeting can be sent to gatherings [at] climatecamp.org.uk.

Last years camp was captured on video and turned into a documentary by Cine Rebalde called Reclaim Power. Copies are now available on DVD in this country from Rising Tide and local groups working towards this years climate camp.

Those in London can check out the climate camp film as part of two evenings of climate chaos related films at the rampART social centre (see http://rampart.co.nr for details). Also showing is the epic documentary The Planet, plus Global Dimming and The Denial Machine. Additionally there will be speakers and info.

concrete lock-on tips (following Parliament Square blockade)

If they took only 20 mins to demolish each lockon then your concrete doesn’t sound up to scratch. Don’t mean to brag but a similar lock on I once built took them 6 hours to demolish with jack hammers and angle grinders. In future you need to include some metal reinforcing mesh or crinkly rebar rods, either offcuts of the proper stuff from builders skips or sawn up supermarket trolleys are ok. Including metal mesh serves not only to bind the concrete together but it spreads the shockwave from jack hammers throughout the material rather than allowing it to be concentrated at the chisel tip. Also good to include some short lengths of blue 6mm rope which prevents the forces of darkness from being able to separate the chunks of fragmented concrete which really winds them up. The other really important things are to use freshly bought cement, be sure your concrete mix is very thoroughly mixed — absolutely no sandy or cementy streaks visible — and then poured in less than 20 mins or so and when pouring it, don’t do it all in one go but ram or tamp (jiggle and shake) it in thoroughly into the container in stages with the end of a bit of 4 x 2. Your concrete looks like it has voids in it which is always a considerable weakness. Good luck with future courageous actions.

Never ever use ordinary “building” or soft sand which is only used for bricklaying and will make very crumbly concrete indeed. You should be using all in ballast which is sharp sand already mixed with pebbles. In some parts of the country — mostly the north — you can’t get this so will have to mix your own using SHARP sand and mixed size pebbles from pea size up to the size of brazil nuts or so.

Titnore tree protest camp appeals for help (& audio report)

SPRING is in the air, the birds are singing in the trees and Titnore Woods in Sussex is once again a lovely place to be…

With the end of a tough winter, the protest camp near Worthing has today appealed for help in a spring offensive aimed at making sure it is in fighting fit shape as its first anniversary and another rebel summer approach.

It was set up in May last year to oppose plans for a 875-home estate, access roads and new Tesco megastore on ancient woodland and green fields in West Durrington.

Top of the wishlist at the moment are pallets, long support beams for treehouses, climbing equipment (not harnesses) and climbing rope. Also someone with a van or similar vehicle who would be able to help clear away rubbish from the site.

Most of all, of course, there is a plea for more people! Whether you can spare five minutes, five hours, five days, five weeks or five months, your physical presence in any supportive capacity is always appreciated.

Why not get down there yourself and discover the kind of environmental direct action that they thought had gone out of fashion after Newbury?

The camp is in woods just north of “Somerset Lake”, a fishing lake east of Titnore Lane. However, Titnore Lane is very dangerous for pedestrians and easiest access is from Fulbeck Avenue, off Titnore Way. Take the path at the far east of Fulbeck Avenue, then turn left until there is a large gap in the hedgerow on the left, opposite a cleared square of ground on the right, and cross right over to the far side of the field, keeping the clump of trees to your left.

It can also be reached via the car park at Tesco’s in Durrington, served by the “Pulse” bus route from Worthing town centre. Basically head straight on from the entrance to the fields at the back end of the supermarket car park, reaching the gap in the hedgerow mentioned above.

Nearest railway stations are Durrington and Goring by Sea on the main South Coast line with direct trains from Brighton, Portsmouth and London.

There is a camp phone — 0780 4245324.

The focus is on practical skills, but there will also be many of the regular diverse and interesting workshops.

The idea is to have multiple workshop sessions, e.g. four two-hour slots spread over four days building up skills in a particular area, so people can learn the basic skills to actually do the job at other mobilisations, events like the climate camp — or wherever. For example plumbing, electrical skills, medics…and whatever else people want to do… It’s not just about the practical skills but also about getting to know each other and starting to work together.

We hope to shut land and Marine down with Blockades/protests on the friday and saturday.
this is a chance to show solidarity with those in Wales who have been sucessfully disrupting the pipeline for so long, and a chance to bring the battle to the doorstep of the company responsible.

The camp will be a self managed space which will include workshops, music/soundsystem a vegan kitchen and more and is inspired by the Camp for Climate Action held last summer.

We will have a website, posters, booklets etc produced soon

feel free to e‑mail us if you want any info, or to help us publicise the camp.
