New camp set up on route of National Gridâ€™s monster gas pipeline in Wales

Yesterday (Monday 8th) a small camp was set-up across a public footpath (in trebanos, wales) when construction workers tried to resume work on the gas pipe line. People are also occupying the pipe, and all work has been stopped. The camp cannot be removed as it has been set-up on a public footpath. We need people URGENTLY, to support the small camp, do direct actions on other consturction work, occupy pipes, and to be part of future plans to fight the pipe across wales.

A coalition of local people and climate action groups, including Safehaven and Rising Tide have returned to the route of National Gridâ€™s monster gas pipeline. They have set up camp on public footpaths leading into the construction site off Glyn Meirch road, Trebanos, and are blocking vehicles from gaining access. They are back to halt work to stop the destruction of countryside, communities and climate.

Milford Haven is today under armed guard due to the threat of terrorism. Yet this pipeline will commit us to another thirty years of fuelling a cause of terrorism: Western corporations taking countries gas to expand consumption and their profits.

This pipeline will also contribute to another form of terrorism: climate change. The effects of climate chance on people are going to be catastrophic yet the government is continuing to live in the â€œCarbon Dinosaurâ€? era by refusing to move on from fossil fuels.

The Stern Report said that we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions drastically and soon or face runaway climate change. A spokesperson for Bristol Rising Tide said â€œBuilding the pipe is a step in exactly the wrong direction. The Â£700 million it will cost could be spent on renewables and energy efficiency. We will take sustained direct action to stop it, taking responsibility for our lives and our future. â€?

Here in South Wales, National Quid have been bulldozing their way through communities and landscapes, showing contempt for both. Safety issues have been ignored and consultation has been a farce.

As a result of the previous protest, a victory was won and the National Grid were forced to stop blasting. However locals are still very concerned about the risk of an avalanche, similar to those of Aberfan and Panteg, as the pipe is being built on old mine workings.

Furthermore, the Health and Safety Executive have said it is guaranteed that a hole will appear within the next thirty years in the pipeline.

It has been proven that this pipeline is not required for UK gas needs by DrRichard Furness, an internationally recognised gas pipeline expert.

We are here to revent the wanton destruction of our countryside and our basic human rights, as well as to safeguard those of future generations. We are demanding that this pipeline project is scrapped.

activists lock down Alcoas’ London offices

Late on New Years Day activists targeted 2 Alcoa front companies, (Kawneer in central London and ASA in North London.) Both companies had their front access doors locked shut with D-locks and chains, and were left grafitti messages that they should leave Iceland straight away.
They are destroying the last pristine wilderness in Europe right now, as well as trashing other communities and ecosystems all over the world.

New Year London Stunt Action by Saving Iceland

On new years day 2007 a group of activists climbed ST PAULS cathedral and the Tate Modern simultaniously to hang banners, as well as on the millenium bridge to kick start a year of decent against heavy industry in Iceland and Trinidad.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTESTORS ARE TO HOST A STUNT ACTION IN LONDON

On new years day, campaigners from the group SavingIceland.org climbed St.Pauls Cathedral and the Tate Modern as part of the SavingIceland.org campaign, a group dedicating to challenging the destruction of Europeâ€™s last remaining great wildernesses, in Iceland. This is to be a protest against the destruction of rural communities in Trinidad and the Icelandic wildernesses, the last of their kind in Europe, both at the hands of the aluminium industry.

The Icelandic government is sacrificing its glacial rivers and geothermal resources in order to power aluminium smelting facilities. It is to destroy some of Icelandâ€™s greatest natural treasures and pollute its waters. This will cause considerable damage to its tourism and fishing industries. The Trinidadian government is selling its vast reserves of natural gas to create an off-shore aluminium smelter that many fear will undermine the livelihoods of entire communities who are dependant upon fishing.

Tomorrowâ€™s action is part of an ongoing international campaign in support of local resistance against heavy industry in both Iceland and Trinidad.

SavingIceland.org has been involved in the organisation of two protest camps held in Iceland and numerous solidarity actions staged across the globe. It is currently coordinating its third protest camp on the island, commencing on 6th July 2007.

We met at the usual time and place of 6pm at central library in Manchester city centre. There were about ten of us, numbers being a bit low becasue many people had gone to other towns and cities for christmas and new year, but making up the numbers we had people from Aberdeen, York and Swansea!

We rode around the roads for an hour and a half with the bicycle
soundsystem playing a mixture of Slayer and Country/ folk. Some people cheered us and some drivers tried to kill us by dangerously overtaking us and driving on the wrong side of the road nearly into on-coming cars.

One woman said that we were being mean to her children becasue we were slowing her down and so I explained that we were celebrating bikes over car culture because amongst other things (and in addition to other groups of society) cars give children asthma and run them over and so maybe she’d like to reconsider and support us, but she later overtook us slowing down an ambulance that we were making space for to get through, she didnt get very far, about 200 yards to the next lights! She would have been quicker on a bike (of course!) Oh well. but that was really the only randomly vaguely negative incident most people seemed pleased to see us or inquisistive about why we were riding.

It was a fun ride and nice that some new people came on it. Hopefully
we’ll see them again. After the ride some of us went for a beer in the bar. nice.

We were going to have a benefit night on the january mass but as its
pangea (a big student night) where lots of people seem to be going and lots of our friends bands seem to be playing at we thought that february mass would be better (its also my birthday!). But at the next one someone will hopefully come down and film and interview some people on the mass for a film about cycling in Manchester I’m trying to make. On that note can anyone that knows film stuff that might be up for helping get in touch.

Sithe Global & DPA are proposing to build the Desert Rock power plant, a 1,500 MW Coal Fired plant in the Four Corners area on the Navajo Reservation. This is an area already polluted by 2 other major coal power plants. Local Navajo residence and community members oppose this project for many harmful reasons!! This Desert Rock power plant is still in the environmental review process and has NOT yet been permitted.

However, Desert Rock company trucks have began moving onto the backyard of Alice Gilmore, an elderly navajo woman, and her family on wednesday to begin drilling efforts. Desert Rock officials and police have not shown any documents or permits to the local residents stating their purpose or permission to be there. Dine supporters and community members have joined Alice and her family to blockade the road. They are elderly women and youth, and they have been camped out on the road over night since Tuesday! Desert Rock trucks have repeatedly rushed them and have almost run-over people a number of times as they attempt to get by. Desert Rock power company is violating the lease rights of the local Navajo residences and is harassing elderly Navajo women and youth! This is an urgent time and support is needed!!!

BURNHAM, SANOSTEE & NENANEZAH RESIDENTS BLOCKADE DESERT ROCK PROJECT

Burnham, NM –Burnham, Sanostee & Nenanezah Elders and citizens are braving the cold to protect the land from the encroaching DinÃ© Power Authority (DPA) and Sithe Global LLC at the proposed Desert Rock site. Navajo residents confronted the DinÃ© Power Authority/Sithe Global on Tuesday afternoon after learning of water drilling that had been occurring without the knowledge and notification of local residents.

â€œI have said â€˜Noâ€™ over and over again and you keep coming over!â€? Nenanezah elder Alice Gilmore exclaimed to Sithe/DPA employees at the confrontation. For Gilmore, the issue is despicable and uncalled for since she gave no consent to allow DPA/Sithe into her grazing area. Members of the DoodÃ¡ Desert Rock committee gathered to support her opposition and asked Sithe/DPA to disclose Drilling permits that allowed drilling activity to occur, to no avail. The residents refused to leave after the Navajo Nation Police attempted to give access to DPA/Sithe Global, claiming that permits for the Desert Rock project are not for public disclosure. The Burnham residents barricaded the roads to disallow traffic into the Desert Rock site and have remained in place since the Tuesday incident occurred.

Members of DinÃ© CARE/DoodÃ¡ Desert Rock Committee met this morning at the Shiprock Courthouse to get answers about drilling permits yet the Lieutenant Dempsey denied access to Gilmore and other concerned residents to view the permits. Residents are asking for: 1.) A copy of the categorical exclusion that is allowing the drilling activities to commence. 2.) Copies of the Clean Water Act Sections 401, 402 and 404, that would prove compliance with regulatory requirements have been met. There are major disturbance taking place and according to the Clean Air Act, these permits are a pre-requisite for drilling activity.

The proposed area is home to extended families, but arbitrarily drawn political boundaries by the Navajo Nation and company representatives have the families separated into the three chapters: Burnham, Sanostee, and Nenahnezad. The boundary defining Burnham and Nenahnezad has been moved south for benefit of DPA/Sithe as recently as two years ago.

â€œThe local residents are not protesters but are resisters. Who would be happy if a well is being dug in their backyard especially when it is done in secrecy? So, how can those residents be considered protesters when they are simply standing up for their rights to have clean air, water, and environment.â€? Stated, Elouise Brown of Sanostee.

Burnham, Sanostee and Nenanezah residents are not waiting for remedy; many have set up camp at the proposed site and are refusing to move until they get the needed documents. â€œWeâ€™re fed up with them,â€? states Sarah J. White, President of the DoodÃ¡ Desert Rock Committee, â€œthe grandmas and the grandpas are being walked over by these monsters and theyâ€™re being denied information. Weâ€™re standing our ground now.â€? This incident follows accusations made against Sithe/DPA about environmental injustices, EPAâ€™s proposed issuance of prevention of significant deterioration (PSD) permit Air Quality Permit for Desert Rock Energy Facility and the creation of Navajo Nation Energy Policies without public input.

Navajo traditional elders blockade power plant site

BURNHAM, NEW MEXICO, USA â€“ Elderly Navajo women and their children formed a blockade, built a fire and camped at the site of a proposed power plant on tribal land in northwest New Mexico. The blockade of
traditional Navajos halted site work in a region that is already toxic with air and water pollution from power plants, oil and gas wells and scattered radioactive tailings from the Cold War.

Facing the threat of arrest by tribal police at the blockade, Navajo elderly, including one medicine man, said they are willing to go to jail to protect their land and way of life.

Most of the elderly are already ill from living in an area where power plants have released 100 tons of coal combustion waste that is blowing in the wind. One of the Navajo elderly resisters is in a wheelchair and
another has severe asthma.

For the second night on Wednesday night, Dec. 13, Navajo resisters camped in the cold at the site.
â€œI have said â€˜Noâ€™ over and over again and you keep coming over!â€? said Nenanezah elder Alice Gilmore, who holds the grazing permit for the area of the proposed Desert Rock Power Plant. The Navajo Nation and
Sithe Global LLC plan to build the power plant, which would be the third power plant in the Farmington/Bloomfield area.

Confronting Sithe and Navajo DPA employees, Gilmore was adamant that she has not given permission for the power plant on her land. Navajo elders from Burnham, Sanostee and Nenanezah chapter, all taking a bold
action to fight the tribal government and corporate aggression, joined Gilmore at the blockade.
â€œWeâ€™re fed up with them,â€? said Sarah J. White, president of the DoodÃ¡ Desert Rock Committee. â€œThe grandmas and the grandpas are being walked over by these monsters and theyâ€™re being denied information. Weâ€™re standing our ground now.â€?

White said Navajos at the barricade need everything in the way of food, firewood and supplies. â€œWe need everything from A to Z,â€? White said.

The blockade was formed just 10 days after Navajo Nation elected leaders gathered with representatives from 14 countries and formulated a global ban on uranium mining on Native lands. The power plant
blockade also comes as Navajo Nation leaders are fighting in the federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to protect San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff, Ariz., from the desecration of snowmaking from recycled
wastewater for tourism. The mountain is sacred to 13 area Indian tribes.

However, both Navajo President Joe Shirley, Jr., and the Navajo Nation Council support the construction of the Desert Rock Power Plant and accompanying coalmine, which Navajos say would add more pollution to
the air, land and water, already saturated with disease-causing toxins.

The Navajo Nation tribal government has attempted to censor the voices of Navajos speaking out against the Desert Rock power plant in New Mexico and the use of aquifer water for coal mining by Peabody Coal on
the western side of the Navajo Nation in Arizona.

The proposed site of the new Desert Rock power plant is in the Four Corners Region, targeted since the 1970s as a national sacrifice area for energy production.

It is also the sacred region of Dinetah, the place of origin of Navajos. However, the air is so polluted in the region of Dinetah near Bloomfield that persons with asthma and respiratory diseases find it difficult to breathe.

Further, Navajos say while they struggle with respiratory diseases, cancer and the death of their loved ones in this region, many Navajos must also haul water and live without electricity, since the power plants on Navajo land primarily provide electricity for non-Indians.

The Navajo blockade comes as Oâ€™odham in Sonora, Mexico, challenge a secret plan by the government of Mexico, with the knowledge of the US EPA, to create a hazardous waste dump near the sacred site of Quitovac where Oâ€™odham hold ceremonies. The Navajo blockade coincides with an action by Pima on Gila River tribal land in Arizona to halt expansion of a hazardous dumpsite.

At the same time, Yaqui in Sonora, Mexico, gathered to prohibit the use of banned pesticides in agricultural fields, now resulting in cancer and deaths.

At the proposed new Desert Rock power plant site in New Mexico, Navajo residents confronted the DinÃ© Power Authority/Sithe Global on Dec. 12, after discovering that water drilling was carried out without the
knowledge and notification of local Navajo residents.

Iceland Camp Against Heavy Industry Starts July 6th

The campaign to defend Europe’s vastest remaining wilderness continues. After the direct action camps in Iceland in the summers of 2005 and 2006 against the Karahnjukar dam and ALCOA’s aluminium smelter, the Saving Iceland campaign moves on to bring industrialisation of Iceland to a halt. A new camp in Iceland will commence on July 6th 2007 (location to be announced later). New plans for dams, power plants, smelters and other heavy industry need to be stopped. Targets include corporates such as ALCOA, ALCAN, Century Aluminium, Barclays, Mott McDonald, Bechtel, Rio Tinto and BH Billiton. Iceland, with it’s vast geothermal and megahydro possibilities, is a new frontier for energy craving industrial moguls, in times of increasing energy scarcity and insecurity. Stopping industrialisation and ecological destruction of the last unspoilt country in the west would be a major strategic victory for the green and anarchist movement and a new incentive for a global movement against industrialisation and ecocide. This includes the campaign against ALCOA and AluTrint’s plans for a smelter in Trinidad and other direct action against dams and heavy industry.

Fully grown trees are being felled on Middle Meadow Walk right now for Quarter Mile developments – urgent action needed

As if the injustice in closing down a city-centre hospital to redevelop into offices, shops and luxury flats wasn’t bad enough, now trees are being felled in the name of private prosperity. Edinburgh City Council have given permission for the Quarter Mile developers to fell 10 trees (7 fully mature – one lime, and the rest Scotch Elm & Sycamore and 3 sapplings which will be replanted) along the Quarter Mile side of North Middle Meadow Walk. The felled trees, 6 so far and counting, will make way for pipelines to the development, shop fronts and a plaza.

Alarm bells were raised yesterday when it was noticed that Middle Meadow Walk had been closed for tree felling – 4 mature trees were cut down with one stump being at least a metre in diameter. This morning action was taken by a group of around 13 concerned residents who disrupted the felling by refusing to leave the area and linking arms around the trees to be felled. The felling was held up for an hour before the protestors were moved on by police. The last-minute nature of the protest and low turn-out meant that firmer action could not be taken.

Removing fully mature, healthy trees on public land to further corporate interests is wrong and adds insult to injury regarding the Quarter Mile disgrace. It was apparent however, that neither the tree fellers, building contractors nor police were happy about the trees being felled – but with their jobs and income at stake they felt obliged to continue.

It was unclear if all of the remaining trees would be felled today – if felling is continuing tomorrow take action, before all of our remaining green spaces are replaced by shop fronts and non-afordable housing.

Welcome to the November 2006 edition of Spirit of Freedom. First off I’d like to appologise for this edition of the newsletter being late. As people may be aware the USA-SHAC 7 where all due to start their prison sentences this month and we were awaiting to hear where they were before we went to print. Sadly all of the USA-SHAC 7 defendants are now in jail so we urge everyone to please write to them. They have been jailed for merely reporting the news, so please do support them. However, whilst supporting the USA-SHAC 7, please don’t forget the other prisoners. They also need our support. So please, no matter where you are in the world, please support the eco-prisoners and no compromise in defence of Mother Earth!

In early November 2006, it was announced that four Americans, Jonathan Paul, Daniel McGowan, Nathan Frazer Block and Joyanna Zacher, who are all defendants in the Oregon Case, had entered Guilty pleas to various charges against them.

When entering their Guilty Pleas these four remained true to their principles and although admitting their own guilt refused to name any
others. It is unclear what length of sentences the four will receive but it is clear they no longer face the possible ‘Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole’, which they were facing if they’d gone to trial. All four are due to be sentenced in mid-December 06.

Also in early November, Grand Jury prisoner, Jeff Hogg, was released from prison. Jeff had always refused to testify against anyone in the Oregon case and was serving an indefinite prison sentence as a result. ELP celebrates Jeff’s release and praise him for his moral stance.

With other news in this investigation, in early October 2006, two of the police informants in the University of Washington arson case, Lacey Phillabaum and Jennifer Lynn Kolar (also known as Jen), pleaded guilty to their roles in the arson which occured in 2001. Kolar also admitted to an arson against a gun club. Following their guilty pleas Kolar is expected to receive a sentence of between 5-7years imprisonment, whilst Phullabaum is expected to received 3-5 years imprisonment.

As soon as any of the sentences, of any of the defendants in this case, are known ELP will bring you the news. However we would like to remind everyone that we do not support police informants and therefore, although reporting their sentences, we will not be listing the prison details of any of the police informants in this case. We do offer our total support to those who have pleaded guilty to their personal charges but not cooperated with the authorities whilst doing so.

Also, despite the various guilty pleas ELP would like to remind everyone that this case is not over. There are still at least three defendants in this case who locations are unknown to the FBI. And also, Briana Waters has formally pleaded not guilty to the University of Washington fire and is scheduled for trial in May 2007. ELP will keep you informed as to all the developments in Briana’s trial.

NADIA WINSTEAD
In mid-October 2006, American animal rights activist, Nadia Winstead, was found Guilty of contempt of court after she refused to testify before a Grand Jury which is investigating a series of Animal and Earth Liberation actions. Nadia was granted leave to appeal her conviction and that appeal hearing is due later on this month. ELP will bring you more news just as soon as we have it.

IL SILVESTRE UPDATE
In early November 2006, Giuseppe Bonamici, was released from prison under house arrest. Giuseppe is one of ten Il Silvestre members, arrested in May 2006, who has been charged with using explosives to destroy an electricity pylon in protest against nuclear power. Following Giuseppe’s release this means that six of the ten defendants are now under house arrest, but four remain imprisoned.

The remaining four are all said to be doing well and remaining strong. One of the four Benedetta Galante, initially after her imprisonment found herself subject to strict mail censorship and only received a few letters within the first four months of her imprisonment. However, her mail now does appear to be reaching her and is described as “flooding in”, so much so that the prison doesn’t have enough mail censors to keep up with her post!!!

Besides the four Il Silvestre prisoners awaiting trial following the May 06 arrests, ELP would like to remind everyone that a fifth Il Silvestre activist is also currently imprisoned. Francesco Gioia is serving 5 years and 2 months for promoting & participating in COR direct action. He is also awaiting trial for escaping from house arrest.

JOE HARRIS
On 20/09/06 British Animal Rights activist, Joe Harris, was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment for taking direct action against Huntingdon Life Sciences targets. His tactics included gluing locks and slashing car tyres.

MADELINE BUCKLER
On 22/09/06 British Animal Rights activist, Madeline Buckler, was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment for sending hate mail to the Hall family, who use to supply guinea pigs to the vivisection industry.

On remand accused of involvement with an arson on logging trucks and an arson on vehicles owned by a sand & gravel company. Both arsons occurred in the USA. Tre is fighting his extradition to the USA.

Nathan Block, #1663667, Lane County Jail, 101 W 5th Ave., Eugene, OR 97401, USA. On remand accused of involvement in an arson against a Poplar Tree Farm and an arson against an SUV dealership. Also charged with involvement in a conspiracy to carry out direct action in Oregon.

Serving 27 years. 1) Ten years for using explosives to destroy electricity pylons leading from nuclear power stations. 2) Seventeen years for the murder of a Swiss Boarder Guard whilst on the run. In ’02 Marco completed a 12-year sentence in Italy for destroying electricity pylons in Italy.

Ibai Ederra, Carcel de Pamplona, C/San Roque. Apdo. 250, 31080 – IruÃ±ez – Pamplona, Navarra (EspaÃ±a), Spain. Serving just under 5 years for sabotaging machinery at the controversial Itoiz dam construction site.

Rodney Coronado #03895-000, FCI Tucson, 8901 South Wilmot Rd, Tucson, AZ 85705, USA. Serving 8 months for his role in an Earth First! hunt sabotage against a mountain lion hunt. Rod is also facing additional charges relating to a speech he made at an animal rights gathering in 2003.

All of the defendants are currently under house arrest.

Last night a site of housing development in Helston was targeted by a group of concerned citizens.

Locks on a digger were glued and slogans sprayed over the windows.

This action was taken to highlight the increasing urban sprawl that is attacking our countryside.
Cornwall does not need more homes. There are enough homes in Cornwall, but we have to abolish the second homes that lie empty for eleven months of the year.

We need our wild spaces. We do not need urban sprawl.
