Have heard from two reliable sources that Squeek has left the tunnel at Rath Lugh. She left with Gardai and some of her family present. The Gardai have taken her away from the site as far as I am aware.

Here’s hoping for 100 to take her place. Tara is THE symbol of dead-end corruption and anti-democratic government in Ireland. The dictatorship of the developers. Pitting people against each other.

Well done Squeek. Takes a lot of nerve.

Tunnel has been filled in with earth.

Rath Lugh eviction attempt 1
13.03.2008
The M3 Motorway is cutting through one of the most beautiful ancient places in Europe.
Help is needed to support the protesters in County Meath, Ireland who are currently sitting in tunnels, after an illegal dawn raid on the direct action camp this morning!!
UK activists going to Tara this Saturday, for more info contact schnews@brighton.co.uk,
Week of solidarity action starts Paddys Day 17th March, read more.…

The intense battle between protesters and the M3 Motorway, carving through the archaeological landscape, surrounding the ancient hill of Tara in County Meath in Ireland continues…….
This morning at 6.30am there was a dawn raid on the direct action camp on top of the Rath Lugh National Monument, only four hours before an injunction was due to be placed at 10.30am.
During the raid clueless construction workers were acting like the police, throwing their weight around, whilst dismantling the camp.
Protesters inside the tunnel network are vulnerable and need legal observers to protect them, the bulldozers are continuing to work on top of them, knowing full well that the ground is mainly sand and silt.
“The eviction is blatantly not being done with any care or proper training to remove the tunnel inhabitants” All tunnel veterans from the 90’s please get over to Tara to help with skills and advice ASAP!
This part of the M3 route is where Halliburton (owned by Dick Cheyney) are planning to build the tolls for the motorway, the construction workers are using C.P.O’s, compulsory purchase order’s to access the area, where they’ve started to cut into the esker / foundation.
This will result in lowering the water table, preventing water reaching the roots of the forest situated on top of the monument, gradually destroying hundreds of ancient oak’s and beech trees.
The National Roads Authority and the Irish Gov’t are choosing to ignore the fact that Rath Lugh is protected under the National Monuments act 2004 and are continuing to break EU Laws left, right and centre.

Further along the route tarmac is being laid at Soldiers Hill for the massive three acre interchange, as the concrete flyovers are going up.
Developers have plans for the surrounding area which will include shopping centres, hotel complexes and the usual Star Bucks and Mc Shite everywhere!!

People are desperately needed to go to Tara now, to build a new direct action camp, activists are meeting at Holyhead ferry port between 12noon ‑1pm Saturday 15th March, we have some money to contribute towards tickets, if folk want to come, get in touch with schNEWS.
If you can’t come to Ireland but want to take action here in the UK see below SIAC companies:

SIAC are an Irish company (South Ireland Asphalt Company) who have a 5% stake in the construction of the Irish M3 on it’s contested route in co Meath Ireland, and are also involved in the construction of an onshore gas refinery terminal at Rossport co Mayo.
along with their croneys FERROVIAL (Owners of Climate criminal company BAA and. 7 U. K airports) They are instrumental in the desecration and destruction of the sacred Tara valley in Ireland, Activists have called for solidarity against SIAC, and there will be ongoing actions against them and ferrovial internationally, with the formulation of international affinity groups.
Activists say there will be Actions against SIAC on and around March 17th 08, with dates for an international day of action against FERROVIAL to be announced shortly, SIAC have operations throughout the UK and Ireland in many fields ranging from construction to pharmaceutical research so there are plenty of opportunity to make you objections to them felt, so please publicise and organize in your local community, (see link’s bellow) TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERANCE!

Approx 80 personnel including several Gardai not displaying their numbers have descended on Rath Lugh.

There are 3 vehicles on the esker and a tractor half way up. This is seriously jeopardising the life of the girl pictured above who is locked into the tunnel by the neck. The Gardai are aware of this and are paying no heed!!!!

There is also a tractor heavy laden with steel works approaching from the Baronstown side and 22 jeeps have been counted.

The situatuion is extremely delicate and extremely tense.

Please go there if you can. Bring video equipment and phone credit. Go Now!!!

Please spread the word, contact all media, ring the Dept of the Environment, Tansport , Museum all.….

No coincidence that this is happening before a Court Order was made to stop them.

=======================================

3pm
A protester has been arrested — she has been released. She is not the same woman as that in the tunnel.
Straight from the protest site: things have calmed down. The Fire Brigade are well gone, will not make any attempt to remove the girl from the tunnel.
A tent will be erected at the entrance so that one other protester can communicate with her.
No effort was or will be made to remove her.
There are still 5 other people locked on with cement.
There is a small digger and steam roller as well as 18 jeeps at the site.
Nothing is driving on the esker.
They are tripping over media and cameras!
There are flood lights being brought in.
Court case being heard again at 2pm.

=======================================

4pm
Two more protesters arrested, dragged down the esker. A dump truck, a bulldozer in the area. Search and Rescue have arrived, — Civil Defence.
They need the garda ombudsman there -
They are hammering into the esker to erect the fence .….….….….……

=======================================

4:30
The construction workers with the aid of the Gardai have fenced off the sensitive area surrounding the tunnel entrance, separating it from the rest of the camp and the protesters. They are in the process of driving posts into the ground, endangering the stability of the area. The protesters onsite have backed away as the presence of Gardai, security, workers and activity around the area is also posing a threat and they do not wish to add further to the human element of possible damage due to an excess of bodies on the mound. Contact with the protester underground is being maintained by one other supporter inside the fence. An agreement has been reached which keeps the Machines at a safe distance.

The injunction was refused by the court. Watch a video of today here

Background & new camp wish-list:

Here’s some background history and up-dates on what’s happening at Tara, Ireland.

Whatever you dream you can do begin it.
Boldness has genius, power & magic in it.
Begin it now.
Goethe

The idea that the land can be owned by a few at the expense of the many, is comparatively new in Ireland, when compared to the lovingly sculpted perfectly astronomically aligned hills of theTara/Skryne valley.
These are monuments from a time when the land was loved and honoured by the tribes that lived upon it, these days however a few morally bankrupt individuals feel it more advantageous to impose a tarmac coated nightmare on the once sacrosanct fields and hills of Tara/ Skryne.

A handful of Fianna Fail (the Irish ruling party) supporters and local property developers have brought land along an area that has SINCE become the route of the planned four lane M3 motorway, which would dissect 44 ancient sites, comprising a complex of pre-historic monuments, hillforts, and henges which make up one of the richest
archaeological sites anywhere in the world.

The highly respected world monuments fund have placed the entire valley on its list of one hundred most endangered world heritage sites, all this is bad for business you might think?

Especially if you’re one of the corrupt politicians or builders who want to destroy this valley with their developments so these people have become stubborn in there refusal to listen to a few academics, much less 70% of the Irish people who wished to see the road re-routed, the millions of euros the developers are going to make on the back of their dodgy dealing must have blocked their ears to the calm voice of reason. And so the diggers moved in attempting to build a massive 52 acre interchange at the foot of Tara hill itself.

On the 16th October 07 the last of the sites that exist on the proposed route of the M3 was reported to campaigners by a worried anonymous local, so concerned citizens on the ground went to see if there was any substance to reports that poorly trained polish archaeologists had been working in secret over previous weeks to excavate something at a site near soldiers hill (itself a site of major historical importance) relating to a decisive battle from the Irish 1798 up-rising which was recently bulldozed.

It would be nigh on impossible to express the history and significance of every site mentioned as the area Surrounding Tara/Skryne is so steeped in History so rich in archaeology that it would take page upon page to give an outline of each one and their relationship to one another.

There are ten sites of importance at the proposed interchange alone, only one other interchange of this size and type exists in Europe (it’s in Lithuania) the sheer size of it has prompted great fear amongst locals that more and more motorways are planned to criss-cross the area around Tara. (Tara hill it’s self is a site equivalent to Stonehenge in UK as a focus for the neo-pagan community).

Of course there’s been an outcry naturally there would be, after all through successive generations of Irish history Tara hill has stood as one of the most emblematic geographic symbols of the struggle that everyday people have had to overcome in order to secure a life not dominated by the greed of the few oppressing the happiness of the many.

Time and time again through the pages of Irelands history Tara and her environs emerge as the stage for an epic play that has mirrored the struggle of all the peoples of the Earth to live a life of worth and meaning.

In ancient times the high king or Ard Ri’ was chosen from amongst the Irish tribes, the Ard Ri’ lived at Tara and although their immediate lands were comparatively small it fell to the Ard Ri to have the final say in matters of judgement between the various tribal representatives of ancient Ireland.

Some may disagree with the notion of Kings and rulers imposing their will on the land and people from some distant hill, but notions of Kingship landownership and chieftainship where in entirely different under brehon law, than those that we in the UK have inherited as a result of nearly a thousand years of subjugation by a small elite of Norman robber Barons and their decendents.

St Patrick first preached his Gospel at Tara to the then Ard Ri’ (leoghiaire son of Na’ial) in mid 400 AD and Brian Mac Kennady (Brian Buru) was the last Ard Ri’ at Tara until 1041

In 1798 three hundred poorly armed “united Irish men” were massacred there, at site now called soldiers hill (the proposed location of the Blundellstown interchange) It’s also where O’connell addressed a crowd believed to be up to a million supporters from the top of tara hill when he led the movement for catholic emancipation in the 1830s from the laws penalising Catholics that had been passed by Cromwell in the 1650’s.

The Spainish company Ferrovial along with smaller operators, Wills Brothers and SIAC have taken on the Public Private Partnership alongside the national roads authority to build this road along it’s ridiculous crooked route through this complex of world heritage sites , and although they have been repeatedly ordered by the E U commission to stop all work on the site, all three companies and the Irish Gov’t have stubbornly refused to cease the work they have been compared by local MEP Kathy Sinnot to a small child who when asked to share a desert with a sibbling, stubbornly stuffs the whole thing in their mouths and petulantly replies ” I can’t it’s all gone” except this is nothing so trivial as that of course, because the land in question is one of the most archaeologically rich landscapes anywhere on earth , with an unbroken record of 6000 years of human habitation, the mind boggles at the potential significance of the archaeology in the area.

Incidently multinational giant Ferrovial helping to carry out this attack was founded (circa 1953) to porovide hardware for the Spainish rail system but was soon in financial difficulty and was eventually bailed out by Spain’s fascist dictator Franco, these links and others within Ferrovials board of directors have led many people to believe that its vindictive actions have been prompted by the right wing Spanish Catholic cult “Opus Dei” who incidently have their headquarters in Ireland, right in the centre of the ancient temple complex of the Tara/ Skryne valley.

Some things however, we can be absolutely certain of, Ferrovial were involved in a project (successfully resisted by locals) that had been intended to bulldoze a mountain, ancestoral graveyard, and sacred precinct,in Mexico, not to mention similar attrocities in Chile.
They also own 7 U.K airports, and are involved with with the forthcoming planned expansion of Dublin airport, plus the on going attempt to expand Heathrow etc, having purchased the British aviation authority for £10.31billion sterling last year.

At present they are trying another route to get there grubby little tenticles in the till by obtaining a slice of London’s underground system.

Of course there was outcry in Ireland when the idea of putting a motorway through Tara was first vaunted, but as Aldous Huxley once said “in the future it will be possible for the powers that be to controll the masses by providing endless amounts of distraction and propaganda” the Irish spin machine has shown it’s self to be as manipulative as any other in the developed world.

First word went out that a motorway was proposed at Tara, then as you would expect there was an uproar, so the Irish national roads authority put masses of funding into an awareness campaign “explaining” that they were not after all proposing a road through Tara, in fact they had merely suggested putting a road “around” Tara, an obvious ploy one might think, but one the Irish people have been expected to swallow hook line and sinker.

As the people of Ireland breathed their initial collective sigh of relief it was expected by the NRA that the public would overlook all the things that were not mentioned, issues like the 52 acre interchange at the foot of tara hill, the bulldozing of 44 (yes 44) archaeological sites, the demolition of a wooden henge with cannine and human internments in its original context (believed to be unique) the human burials include a high status female internment (which with proper analysis may well have provided useful commentary on the possible bias of the early christian scribes toward male kingship etc) the partial demolition of a unique hillfort, the bulldozing of a graveyard full of 60 french “celtic” style internments, the list goes on and on and on graves and sites and temples all sacred to the living soul of the land and her people, torn out so a handful of greedy selfish philistines can make a quick buck.

Meanwhile with the ongoing and wholesale destruction underway the Irish powers that be repeat their mantra, it’s not going through Tara hill they say, the living are more important than the dead and the living need that motorway, and on and on they repeat their patronsing oversights as if the people are so stupid as to not know that there is a better route to the west of Tara hill, that route would follow the flat level gradient of a disused railway track, or that all the best development land of the linked towns lays to the west, or that the shortest and best crossing of the Boyne river is to the west, in fact the only logical reason why anyone would build a road on the present proposed route is because a few crony’s of the Irish ruling party have brought up masses of land in the Tara/skryne valley and they alone stand to profit from this route.

So the politicians and road builders keep their heads in the sand, vainly repeating their mantra against reality, my hands are tied, we need a road, it’s not going through Tara, etc etc.
The Rath Lugh direct action camp was evicted yesterday, and people are still locked on in the tunnels we need people to come and help build a new camp along the M3.
Every visitor makes a difference to the protest.

Activities so far have included limited use of tripods, most recently at an iron age fort complex discovered in october near soldiers hill where protesters locked on to to obstruct the shoddy practices of badly trained and unprofessional polish archaeologists drafted in, to rush the dig through in secret, also tree houses have been placed on route, but work has been mainly stopped sporadicly by concerned E.U citizens upholding the law by physically standing in front of bulldozers,.

“The tactics and actions vary as we continue to shut down all work on this road once and for all” said one protestor ” the one thing that will never change is that we will defy this road to the last sod, and continue to protest as long as those responsible try to destroy our sacred land”

But greater numbers are urgently needed, anyone who cares is urged to visit and lend physical, moral or other support, everyone has something they can offer, the main thing is just to go to Tara hill and meet other people who care, it’s not about “protesters” or “activists” doing their demo , it’s about YOU caring enough to do something before it’s too late, don’t leave it to someone else.

HOW TO GET THERE.
National express funfares from £15 one way from the U.K (inc ferry) or £52 for a months open return on the train from most U.K rail stations.
Once you get to Dublin city center, get a 109 bus from Busaurus (central bus station) going north to Navan, and ask to be let off at Tara. It’s a short well signposted walk from the bus stop to Tara hill and the vigil site, this should cost about 11 euros return.

WISH LIST FOR THE NEW CAMP BEING SET UP!!!
Tarps, carpets, digital cameras and memory cards, old C.B. Rigs aerials etc, Mobile phones and credit, Large tents and tarpaulins, rope, climbing equipment and harness, Locks, chains, waterproof warm dry and durable clothing, serviceable welly boots and wax jacket, and all other types and sizes of serviceable boots, clean and warm blankets and bedding, Lighting equipment, security lights, and 12volt spotlights, scaffolding bars and clamps, welding equipment, pic’s shovels, mic’s and recording equipment, pic’s shovel’s etc, etc, but especially we need individuals with their own innitiative, the protest belongs to no one„ it’s up to you, if not you then who? If not now then when?

There are big events planned for may 1st, june 21st, aug 1st, sept 21st, oct 31st dec 21st feb 1st and march 31st,
The resistance will be ongoing against ferrovial regardless, and against the road until it is re routed, and let’s face it there’s nothing like a surprise visit to cheer folks up, so come on down to Tara and celebrate our love of the land and the strength of our unity and defiance.

From Centros Miller, the Northern Link road and out-of-town supermarket plans at Lawson’s bridge, Lancaster is subject to a barrage of proposed developments designed to benefit large companies, yet threaten the fabric and liveliness of our communities. We are tired of the lack of any say for the residents of the city as to the direction that the planners are taking us.

The Carnival is about giving Centros, the Council and any other developers a taste of the strength of our communities and of our opposition. It’s also about making links and creating lots of exciting and fun events!”

Saturday 1st of March saw Lancaster’s Carnival of Culture come off without a hitch. During the day, between 250–350 people joinedin a fantastically colourful, creative and vibrant street procession that snaked around the town through the afternoon, stopping in spots that are due to be blighted by car-parks, big box retail shopping and so forth, as well as the town square with it’s Trumpton-style Victoria statue, the City hall and the planners’ offices. We were treated to performances by a community steel band, Batala samba (leading the procession for much of the day), SistaSlap women’s african drumming group, an impromptu klezmer group, a skateboarding 10-foot Punch puppet, an alien on stilts etc etc etc.

The procession also took up the City’s one-way system in between events, with a bike sound-system providing the bassy beats. Stewards for the carnival on bikes blocked side streets and on foot, handed lollipops to car drivers caught up in the blockage. The police, it has to be said, facilitated the whole thing in a low-key manner, except for the unnecessary presence of 3 undercover cops and evidence gathering team. Why don’t they just use our website for pictures!? 😉

The protest/procession was organised over several months at open, public meetings run by consensus, and at ‘infrastructure group’ meetings (also open), with tasks divided into working groups for e.g. music, performance, carnivalism…The event itself was proceded by a street performance where corporate ‘grey men’ pulled the maggot of consumerism through saturday shoppers, sucking the souls from ‘unsuspecting’ ‘random’ Lancastrian shoppers, who were offered empty shiney bags and emerged with zombie-mask blank faces.

It is impossible to convey the ‘vibrancy’ and ‘diversity’ (we wanted to reclaim these corporate-propaganda words from the developers) of the day, it’s best to visit the website at www.carnivalofculture.org.uk. We have sent a loud and colourful, well-organised and diverse, unambiguous ‘NO’ to the corporate take-over of our city, and a multi-faceted ‘YES’ to the alternatives of non-commercial community and creativity.

FFD frontWhether you’ve been plotting for months or have just been inspired, there’s plenty of time left to plan your action. Read on for loads of resources and support…

With one month to go until April 1st, actions are being plotted up and down the country and around the world, ranging from street theatre and town centre demonstrations to high profile direct actions targeting industry operations and headquarters. Networks from Earth First! to People and Planet have got on board in helping to spread the word. National press have been in touch and are planning to cover the day. People are emailing from around the country asking for more info on planning their prank, and looking for local actions to get involved in.

We are in the middle of an unstoppable rise of creative, radical, necessary direct action against climate change… be part of it, on Fossil Fools Day and beyond.

Whether you’ve been plotting for months or have just been inspired, there’s plenty of time left to plan your action. Read on for loads of resources and support… and whatever you do, make sure to call or email us on the day so we can add your action to our end-of-day round up, and show the world what grassroots action against the fossil fuel industry can achieve.

Happy Fossil Fools Day everyone!

And one last time… the call-out:

FOSSIL FOOLS DAY, April 1st 2008
Pull a prank that packs a punch.

Roll up, roll up! The climate circus is in town. Climate change threatens our very survival, but the fools at the head of the fossil fuel empire continue to plunder the earth, with governments the willing court jesters at their side.

They would have us believe that we can escape climate change with techno-fixes, market mechanisms and offset schemes – all technocratic acrobatics that distract us from the truth: the only real solution to climate change is to keep fossil fuels in the ground.

For over a century the fossil fuel industry has been fooling with our lives. From extraction to combustion they have poisoned our air, polluted our water and ruined our climate. On April 1st, 2008, we’re going to turn the tables and show them who the real fools are.

Find a local fossil fool – the coal-mining clown, the offset contortionist, the aviator tripping on the high wire, the supermarket food mile freak show, the oily strong man, or any other fool that deserves your attention – and take direct action to end the fossil fuel empire.

On Fossil Fools Day, bring the spirit of carnival and mischief to the fight for climate justice.

PS. Don’t forget, Fossil Fools Day kicks off a season of action…

UPCOMING ACTIONS AND EVENTS:
———————————————-
1) FOSSIL FOOLS DAY — INTERNATIONAL, 1.4.08
Roll up, roll up…the circus is coming to town, and it’s going to be big!
For over a century the fossil fuel industry has been fooling with our lives. From extraction to combustion they have poisoned our air, polluted
our water and ruined our climate. On April 1st, we’re going to turn the
tables and show them who the real fools are. Rising Tide’s call has been
backed by Network for Climate Action, Global Exchange and Rainforest
Action Network. There are actions planned across the country and around
the world — let us know what you get up to! (Or tell us in advance if you
can and we’ll help spread the word, get media attention, etc.) Contact
local groups or just do it yourself. Show the fossil fool clowns what you
think of their freakshow — It’s time to Pull a Prank that Packs a Punch!

2) MAYDAY! MAYDAY! INVASION OF THE CLIMATE SNATCHERS — INTERNATIONAL, 1.5.08
From biofuels to nuclear power, carbon-trading to hydrogen fuel cells,
dumping urine in the ocean to carbon capture — everywhere corporations are
seeking the elusive elixir which allows them to continue with business as
usual. All these technologies are a distraction from the real solutions -
a massive reduction in our consumption and far-reaching social change. On
May 1st, International Workers Day, we will challenge these false
solutions to climate chaos.
http://networkforclimateaction.org.uk

3) CLIMATE ACTION WITH A BITE! — INTERNATIONAL, 3.6.08
Climate action starts on your dinner plate, in the supermarket, at the
food processing and distribution centres, on the farm, in your allotment
or your back yard. The foods we eat are responsible for about a third of
our greenhouse emissions. It’s time for us to switch to plant-based,
organic, seasonal and locally produced food. Whether you’re into local
food, permaculture, animal rights, allotments, humanitarian issues, food
politics or transport campaigning, make the links and take action to
highlight the role of the food industry in climate chaos.

4) “PEOPLE ARE STILL THE SAME” — BRECON, 8.3.08
A one-day event showcasing artworks created in response to interviews,
dialogues and documentation of the construction of the South Wales gas

From 3pm till dusk: Current State Dystopia — a video projection in the
tunnel underneath the A40 road and: Books — a sound and slide installation
in Dingle Wood. 6pm: Going Home — projection and music in Penpont Church.

RECENT HAPPENINGS:
———————————————-
1) CLIMATE EMERGENCY AT HEATHROW, AND THEN WESTMINSTER — 25.2.08 / 27.2.08
On the 27th, campaigners opposed to Heathrow expansion scaled the roof of
the Houses of Parliament and hung protest banners from the building. The
protesters also made paper aeroplanes out of confidential Whitehall
documents and flew them into the MPs’ car park below! The documents –
obtained under the Freedom of Information Act — prove that airport
operator BAA wrote parts of the consultation document and that the
government has already decided to build a 3rd runway and 6th terminal at
the world’s biggest international airport.
http://www.planestupid.com/?q=content/plane-stupid-scales-parliament
Two days earlier Greenpeace campaigners had climbed on to one of
Heathrow’s short-haul flights and covered the tailfin of the plane with a
huge protest banner that read “CLIMATE EMERGENCY – NO 3rd RUNWAY”.
http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/blog/climate/climate-campaigners-bring-peaceful-protest-to-heathrow-20080225
Also on the 25th, the Heathrow end-of-consultation rally at Westminster
was a packed-out success, with thousands of residents, politicians and
environmental campaigners pledging to resist plans to extend Heathrow -
http://www.airportwatch.org.uk/
The distribution of 50,000 leaflets and the actions of anarchist art troop
Weird Load helped make the rally such a success:

2) RATCLIFFE ACTION VERDICT — NOTTINGHAM, 25.2.08
Following their attempts to halt operations and thus diminish CO2
emissions at the Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station last April, 10 activists
were recently back in court. Unfortunately the defendants’ defence of
environmental necessity was rejected and they were found guilty. The judge
had earlier said that he wished to compliment all the defendants on the
presentation of their case.
http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2008/02/392323.html

3) BP AMERICA, EXXON MOBIL AND CO. IN THE DOCK — ALASKA, 27.2.08
Meanwhile, in Alaska, lawyers for the native coastal village of Kivalina
have filed a suit arguing that 5 oil companies, 14 electric utilities and
the country’s largest coal company were responsible for the relocation of
villagers because of flooding caused by the changing Arctic climate.
“There has been a long campaign by power, coal and oil companies to
mislead the public about the science of global warming,” the suit says.

4) HANDS OFF IRAQI OIL! ACTIONS — UK AND NETHERLANDS, 23.2.08
In solidarity with the Iraqi peoples’ struggle against the plunder of
their oil reserves, there were actions in Birmingham, London, Liverpool,
Wrexham, Coventry and Amsterdam.

5) EARTH FIRST! BLOCKADES POWER PLANT CONSTRUCTION — FLORIDA, 18.2.08
Dozens of concerned community members from Palm Beach County and across
the States put their bodies on the line to halt construction of a massive
gas-fired power plant. A dozen activists locked themselves together
through metal pipes as 200 supporters rallied around them. The blockade
stopped work on the construction site for six hours before a total of 27
people were arrested.

6) RTNA/EARTHFIRST! PIPELINE ACTION — PORTLAND, U.S. 23.1.08
The above blockade followed another combined action where Cascadia Rising
Tide joined forces with Stumptown Earth First! to hold an action and rally
at the Portland office of NW Natural in protest at their involvement in
Liquefied Natural Gas pipelines, which threaten to clear-cut strips of
forest throughout Oregon for new fossil fuel infrastructure. Activists
piled trees around the office entrance and hung a large banner which read
— “There’s nothing Green about Clear-cuts, No new pipelines”.

7) SABOTAGE AT GLENSANDA — YORKSHIRE, FEBRUARY 2008
An aggregates processing plant on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National
Park has been sabotaged. 20% of the stone extracted will go to major road
network construction across Europe. The plant in Yorkshire was entered and
vehicles, including all bulldozers, had holes drilled in vital parts of
their engines and their tires. Both control rooms were broken into and all
computers and instrument panels were smashed. Keys to all buildings and
machinery were removed from the site. The message “Stop Glensanda” was
left.

8) PLANKTOS DUMPING SCHEME DEFEATED BY ANTI-WHALERS — MADEIRA, 14.2.08
Planktos, the California company trying to turn a profit by fertilizing
the ocean with iron dust, has pulled the plug on planned field tests. On
the company’s web-site, a simple notice blamed the shutdown on a “highly
effective disinformation campaign waged by anti-offset crusaders.” In
November 2007, the anti-whaling ship Sea Shepherd confronted the Planktos
vessel and forced it to move onto Madeira. And there it stayed until its
recall last month.

9) COMMUNITY HALTS SHELL — IRELAND, 12.2.08
The Erris community continues to protect the land — survey work was
stopped and trucks were blocked. Local people prevented Shell from illegal
work for 4 hours until Gardai forced through workers, injuring protesters.

10) CRITICAL MASS HERO CLEARED — BRISTOL, 7.2.08
In May last year, someone stood in the road and tried to stop a car that
had hit a Critical Mass cyclist, from driving away. For that he was
arrested for obstructing the highway, thrown to the floor by his neck
whilst handcuffed, and then — surprise surprise — also arrested for
assaulting a police officer.
After 9 months of nervous waiting, he was finally cleared of all charges,
as Bristol Magistrates Court accepted a submission that the police
evidence was at best ‘severely flawed’ and at worst, fabricated, and the
trial was stopped.

11) KLIMAX SURGE ON! — SWEDEN, JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2008
Groups of activists connected to Klimax, Sweden’s direct action movement
against the root causes of climate change, struck repeatedly last month.
At Malmö Airport, seven activists were apprehended when trying to break
into the runway, some of them dressed as polar bears. Some 30 activists
put up a blockade in the middle of the highway running through Umeå, the
largest city in northern Sweden.
A similar number staged a protest outside the office of Swedish Meat, a
major meat corporation, to highlight the severe effects the industry is
having on our climate. Another 50 activists marched into the traffic on
one of the major streets in inner city Stockholm, seizing it for 15
minutes. The action was directed against a planned mega-highway, to be
built in the western parts of the capital.

Mass Action: Refuse to Pay on trains to London, 20 April

A mass climate action is taking place on Sunday 20th April in London. People will board trains into central London, refusing to pay the high prices. There will be a convergence in the central London terminals at around 1pm. The action aims to highlight how the current public transport prices are unaffordable and must be radically lowered if we are to get people out of their carbon intensive cars.

There will be a convergence in the central London terminals at around 1pm. The action aims to highlight how the current public transport prices are unaffordable and must be radically lowered if we are to get people out of their carbon intensive cars.

All are invited to take part in a mass action against soaring public transport prices on Sunday 20th April. We encourage people from all walks of life to board trains into the central London terminals, refusing to pay the fare. People will converge together at the terminals at around 1pm. The action is highlighting the fact that public transport must become drastically cheaper and affordable if it is to become a viable alternative to the dominant carbon heavy motoring. It will be a chance to collectively rise up and declare that we are not going to accept how much it costs to travel by sustainable means, and a warning to both the government and private train companies that these actions will continue until public transport prices are brought down massively.

The action is being organised by The Student Climate Project, because choosing whether or not to own a car is a decision many students are faced with. Many will opt to own a car simply because an affordable and accessible alternative is not available. This action gives students an empowering opportunity to contribute to changing the fundamentals of our carbon intensive infrastructure and economy, rather than merely feeling guilty about their own personal emissions. But, of course, you don’t need to be a student to take part in the action!

Since 1980 motoring has increased by an alarming 87%, and continues to grow despite the ongoing threat of climate change. This might have something to do with the fact that, in this time period, public transport costs for the user have risen by 40% in real terms, whereas motoring costs have decreased by 14%. [1]

If anyone is in any doubt about the emission reductions public transport can bring, then you need look no further than the Department for Transport’s own calculations. In a parliamentary answer in July 2004, the Department stated that taking the train from London to Manchester would mean just 14% the carbon emissions of taking the car for the individual passenger. [2]

Climate Change needs to be tackled today. We need 90% cuts in UK emissions before 2030 if we are to avoid going beyond tipping point where the climate system will spiral out of our control completely. As well as rapidly doing away with carbon intensive means of transport, we must also ensure the sustainable alternatives become available for all.

Therefore, let’s come together on this action and bring about positive change: putting public transport first!

More information will follow very shortly at www.studentclimateproject.org.uk and you can also email process@studentclimateproject.org.uk for info and resources for the action.

On site reports from the trenches at Rath Lugh

Monday 25th February:
There are fences across the proposed route each side of the Rath Lugh woods. At around 8am this morning a member of the Rath Lugh camp heard machinery passing by the rath. 6 of us went out and saw 2 dump trucks and 2 diggers outside the fence, coming from the Baronstown direction. Each digger was 40 tonnes, and wanted to drive though at the same time! A large crowd of SIAC, Ferrovial and Wills Bros workers were present, 2 members of the Garda Siochana were also present, both in incomplete uniforms; they didn’t wear hats, one of them wasn’t displaying his ID number on his shoulder. We explained no machinery would be passing by Rath Lugh, that the area is preserved and it is a criminal offence to interfere with or damage a national monument. The weight and vibrations of the machinery will affect the monument on the esker, and so endanger all of Rath Lugh. The workers took absolutely no heed of anything we told them.

Rath Lugh destructionMonday 25th February:

Protesters climbed onto the machinery to peacefully blockade their path. The rest of us stood in front of the machines. The Gardai took our names and addresses. acThe protesters on the machinery climbed off the machines, because one construction worker tried to forcably pull a male protester off the digger. The female protester was walking towards the Rath, when she was manhandled by the Garda with no hat, car or ID number on his shoulder. The Gardai didn’t give her a caution but arrested her straight away. He handcuffed her and when we questioned him, he mentioned OPERATION BEDROCK. He then attempted to drag her to Mark Cleary’s jeep, as there was no squad car to be seen. We immediately objected to this illegal arrest, but the Gardai kept pulling her, even through she was visibly upset. There were no female Gardai present, we expressed our concerns about a young female being taken off site by 2 extremely unprofessional Gardai and driven off in a violent man’s jeep (Mark Cleary’s. Photos of this man can be seen on this site, or Indymedia.ie, his drives a white jeep and his registration plate is 07 D 60531).

The Gardai finally seemed to understand our worries about this illegal arrest, and decided to walk her off the site and take her to Navan Garda Station in their squad car, which for some unknown reason was parked down the route near Baronstown. I walked with the female protester and the 2 Gardai towards Baronstown. She was handcuffed behind her back, and when the wind was blowing dust in her eyes, they wouldn’t free her so she could wipe the dust out. It’s worth noting that this site has had its topsoil removed and is compacted earth with lime to dry out the ground. They joked rather insensitively I should wipe her eyes instead! When I asked the Garda with no ID why he mentioned OPERATION BEDROCK, he refused to comment. Finally we arrived at their squad car, but a Paddy Wagon was there, and around 8 men in plain clothes wearing Garda Siochana wind cheater jackets. When I asked them why they weren’t in full uniform they explained they were plain clothes Gardai. I again expressed my concerns about this dodgy crowd taking one of our young female protesters away, and requested I come with her, for her own health and safety. They refused immediately, one Bean Garda was extremely snappy, explaining the female protester would be safe with her. I said this was exactly what I was worried about and asked would they handcuff me so I could accompany my colleage. The same Bean Garda said I have often made my own way to Navan in the past when needed be. The Garda didn’t uncuff my colleage in the back of the car, so when they braked suddenly she hurt her back and now needs medical attention.

We made our way back to the front line at Rath Lugh and were about to head into the Garda Station in Navan when we got an urgent phone call from the front line. A dozer was at the left fence, coming from Baronstown direction. A smaller digger was working on a spoil heap a few feet away from the esker. We immediately blockaded the machinery peacefully to prevent them working. All of the SIAC, Ferrovial and Wills Bros were sitting in their jeeps as it was hailstoning and extremely windy. A Garda jeep approached from Lismullen, with the same 2 Gardai who arrested my colleage an hour earlier. The bald Garda without his ID number earlier now had his ID displayed, obviously he realised he made an illegal arrest earlier. We handed them the Rath Lugh Preservation Order, which they accepted. The Garda who displayed his ID number explained the dozer would be passing throught to Lismullen, but he was stopping the digger from working until the matter of the Preservation Order is clearer. We blocked the esker from being harmed as the dozer passed by s to the Lismullen site. When asked about the plain clothes Gardai, the Garda denied their existence. When I reminded hiym I spoke to the plain clothes Gardai myself, he corrected himself. He said they were on standby. On standby for what we asked, explaining our own health and safety is of paramount importance. He refused to comment further.

6 construction workers approached the front line bender, took measurements around the perimeter fence of the bender, using surveying equipment. Construction workers in jeeps attempted to drive past Rath Lugh again from Baronstown to Lismullen, but the Gardai refused them permission, until the Preservation Order matter is clearer.

I am now on going to bring the female protester who got released to hospital for medical attention.

Update lunchtime:

Situation Critical as more machinery is arriving. 4 machines were allowed pass Rath Lugh in single file earlier en route to Lismullin. They have chosen this route to enter onto the Henge. Now 3 machines are stationed at Rath Lugh threatening to begin work in that area. There has been no reply from Gormley’s office despite several requests this morning in regard to the Temporary Preservation Order and for confirmation of the boundaries of same ‚which seem now to be unclear.

Please support , BE PRESENT, contact all interested bodies, make complaints, spread the word, do what you can but do it Now!

The female Protector has been released. No details of charges yet.

Sabotage against the Glensanda Quarry Expansion

An aggregates processing plant on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park has been sabotaged. The Plant is owned by Bardon Aggregates a member of Aggregate Industries, part of the Holcim Group. Aggregate Industries own the Glensanda Quarry on the north west coast of Scotland. The quarry is europes biggest coastal quarry and has it’s own port. Aggregate Industries plan to expand the quarry from 125 ha to 206 ha giving reserves of 814 million tonnes of granite. They currently extract 7–8 million tonnes a year and can increase this to 15 million tonnes. The expansion plan includes removing the peaks “The Mam” and “Lag a ‘mhaim” from the skyline. This would be visible from the Scottish islands and will effect the ecology of many species including otters, seals, and golden eagles. 20% of the stone extracted will go to major road network construction across europe.

The Plant in Yorkshire was entered and sabotaged. Vehicles including all bulldozers had holes drilled in vital parts of their engines and their tires. Both control rooms were broken into and all computers and instrument panels were smashed. Keys to all buildings and machinery were removed from the site. The message “Stop Glensanda” was left. Aggregate industries have sites all over the UK and the World, you know what to do!
