4. Get involved in this exciting movement for social change and environmental justice!

What’s the Scottish Camp for Climate Action?

Some time between 3–10 August, activists, campaigners and communities from all over Scotland will set up camp! We will be living sustainably and equally, and taking awe-inspiring collective direct action to hold greedy climate criminals to account.

In a time of epoch-making economic and environmental change, we’re going to be making direct changes for the better. We’ll be taking control of our lives, of our society, and standing up for what we believe in. We’ll refuse to believe the greedy polluters and financiers, when they say it’s just not the right time to clean up their act. We’ll clean it up for them!

The Camp (whether urban or rural) will be a living example of collective, imaginative low-impact living, full of practical solutions. Its not just about plastic bags and light bulbs any more, these things isolate us and distract us from the real problems. Instead, we will work together to build strong, sustainable and powerful communities.

Whilst we haven’t decided where the camp will be yet, there’s no shortage of options. Whole swathes of airports, coal power stations, open cast mines and agrofuel installations and motorways are planned for Scotland. We also have the luxury of hosting the headquarters of international banks like RBS and HBOS, whose greed got us into this economic and environmental mess.

What’s happening in the run-up to the camp?

Some time between June 4–16 there will be a Climate Camp Convergence, with informative and practical workshops and discussions, opportunities for building links between campaigns, and the chance for us to collectively plan the future of climate activism across Scotland. By the time the August Camp rolls around we’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

How do I get involved now?

Making this happen needs loads of ideas, energy and input. In short, it needs you. And all your mates!

Come to an organising meeting!

We organise horizontally, without leaders, and everyone has input into decisions. At the moment, most of the organising is being done in Edinburgh. We want this to change! We plan for local organising meetings to feed into regular Scotland-wide Gatherings.

Next meeting: Edinburgh, Tuesday 24th March, 7pm
at the Autonomous Centre of Edinburgh (ACE) www.autonomous.org.uk

The following meeting will be on April 7th , 7pm, ACE in Edinburgh.

On the agenda, Tuesday 24th:

1.What focus each of the summer convergences will have: direct action, education, movement building etc, And what some of the specific content will be.
2. What the exact dates of each convergence will be.

Start organising in your area!

- Get organising with people in your area and see how much time, energy and resources you can bring to a Climate Camp in Scotland. To be effective, Climate Camp Scotland needs to have strong, decentralised groups doing the planning and preparation.

- Please get in touch if you want to help organise Climate Camp Scotland! so we can work together to find meeting times and locations that as many people can get to from around the country.

- Host the Climate Camp Scotland Info Tour in your area, to find out what’s happening this summer, what has to be decided and prepared, and how you can get involved.

- Email: climatecampscotland@riseup.net to request the Info Tour and with any questions however big or small!

Somer Tenants Do ‘Ave ‘Em

Ever got that sinking feeling that your landlord is a little more concerned with cash than your wellbeing? That must be the feeling amongst Somer tenants who now face a well-above-inflation rent hike of 7.5%. Somer’s justification? They say that their rent is below the local average, and that they need the money for maintenance work. Hmm… A couple of points spring to mind here that may go some way to debunking Somer’s greedy little lies. One, being a supposedly social housing trust, specifically set up for people on low-to-no incomes, having a lower than average rent rate is nothing to boast about – it is the sole function of Somer to provide low cost housing for Bath residents after all. Their claim to provide “lower than regional average” rent also falls down when a brief look at local property websites reveals the regional average monthly rent for a 2 bedroom flat to be a whopping £894.00! In an area with a far higher than usual (you might say disgustingly high) percentage of toffs, the rent is obviously going to be wildly beyond the budget of the average person in social housing. Somer also claims to need the additional rent money for maintenance work. Okay, this sounds reasonable, but should that cash be sucked from the pockets of residents or from the coffers of Somer’s directors? A recent advert to recruit another director to Somer reveals a £125,000 annual salary (plus bonuses, plus 10% car allowance) – so who best should shell out for the work? And what have our brave Council done to come to our aid? Don Foster – as well his other admittedly urgent duties of posing for the local press with mouthfuls of banana (what are you good for?) – has asked Somer to introduce the hike over two years instead of one. We’ll, we’ve got news for you Donny boy, whether they ram it home hard, or slide it in gently, we’re still getting screwed! With the recession worsening, Somer have once again showed that they value profit over people and that the Council prioritises business interests over Bath residents. If we want fair rent, it looks like we’ll have to fight for it ourselves, and not rely on Dodgy Don’s dastardly deals with degenerate directors to denigrate dwellings.

On a similar note, it turns out that the equally dodgy Nightstone housing association are leaning on elderly residents on Walcot Street to move out, as they want to bump up the rent and lure in young professionals instead. But the residents are still refusing to budge – we’ll keep you posted.

Game On!

Whilst big business and the state claimed “We didn’t know” when the economic collapse kicked in last year, anybody with half a brain could see the recession coming from miles away. Maybe all these wealthy capitalists thought it was just a game. Well now it is: BAN presents the ‘It’s Not My Responsibility’ game on Saturday the 14th March! The game is played with two teams, one representing liberty, and the other representing well-dressed big business and the state. The game is played with pre-provided big balloons, and the idea is to bounce away the responsibility balloons – (Boo! Hiss!) Credit Crunch, Bankruptcy, Unemployment, Surveillance, Competition, Bailiffs – whilst sharing the balloons representing the more anarchic side of life – Freedom, Community, Cooperation, Ethical Living, Fun, Courage… The more people the merrier, so come and join this creative opportunity to share wisdom with the people of Bath, and the odd tourist. Meet at the FreeShop stall outside the Pump Rooms on Stall Street Saturday at 1.30pm, and let the games commence at 2pm. Bring musical instruments, a sense of playfulness, and pom-poms to cheer on your side. Oh, and dress to impress!

Summit For The Weekend

In a few weeks’ time, the leaders of the world’s richest 19 countries, plus delegates from all EU states, will be meeting in London to discuss deepening the global recession. And as it is getting more and more obvious that it is them and their fatcat and banker buddies who have got us into this mess, we’ll be there to meet them! The week of action kicks off with the ‘Put People First’ march on Saturday the 28th. Meeting at 11am at the Embankment, it calls for “jobs, justice and climate” and is shaping up to be pretty huge. The demo will consist of thousands of people who’ve had just enough of ‘business as usual’, as well as the usual suspects: socialists, environmentalists, trade unionists and anarchists. This will be followed up by several midweek events, starting with ‘Storm The Banks’: starting at 11am on Wednesday the 1st of April, four simultaneous protests will make their way into the heart of London’s financial districts, where some will party, some will protest and some will be a little bit naughtier! There’s room enough for all forms of dissent — peaceful protesters, direct action enthusiasts, experienced and inexperienced protestors alike. Towards the end of the event, the Network for Climate Action have called for a camp to be set up in the financial district to oppose the carbon-driven economy that led to this recession – bring a sleeping bag, food, and sense of adventure, ‘cos this one’s not to be missed! The following day will see a series of protests around the venue of the G20 summit (the ExCeL Centre), during which some will attempt to block the delegates out, some will try to get in, and others will hold a rally. The actions are looking to be pretty dynamic, so if you’re feeling pissed of at the state we’re in, then this is the event for you. People will be travelling to all of the events from Bath, so to find someone to travel down with, drop Bath Activist Network an email to the usual address. What will you tell your grandkids when they ask you where you were when the revolution started? (Not up late slaving over two-bit radical news rags, we hope!)

Taking Liberties Back

On Sunday the 22nd of March (a week later than usual, for those who’re paying attention), the latest in the series of ‘Bubbling Under’ film screenings will roll at the Porter Cellar on George Street, from 1pm. This month’s film, presented by Bristol Indymedia, will be ‘The Take’: in the wake of Argentina’s dramatic economic collapse of 2001, Latin America’s most prosperous middle class suddenly found itself wandering a ghost town of abandoned factories and mass unemployment. The Forja auto plant lay dormant too, until its former employees decided to take it back, and refused to leave! Facing off against bosses, bankers and a whole system that sees their beloved factories as nothing more than scrap metal for sale, the workers are part of a daring new grassroots movement of workers who occupy bankrupt businesses and create jobs and viable futures in the ruins of crumbling economies – it remains to be seen whether Bathonians will follow suit! Directed by journalist Avi Lewis and writer Naomi Klein.

Theory Corner: Safety Or Snobbery? B&NES vs. NFA Round 3

Last week, the Chronicle gave front page to the story of a young woman ASBO’d out of Bath for three years, the third homeless person to be similarly ejected in as many months. Yet how much of a threat is the homeless community to the rest of the city’s population? Are they thieving, anti-social and threatening like the Council, or are they on the receiving end of B&NES sycophantic drive to sweep away anything ‘undesirable’ from the eyes of the wealthy? And before we start with the Daily Mail-esque cries of “it’s their own fault,” statistics show that the vast majority of homeless have been the victims of domestic or sexual abuse at a young age, or have served in the armed forces, spat out without the skills to integrate when they cease being useful killers. In this journalist’s experience, I’ve had next to no trouble with Bath’s homeless, and only ever once have been threatened. There are however groups that I have often been made to feel unsafe by – those people who follow the acceptable conventions of successful society, who get hammered in a bar or club ever weekend before spilling out onto the picturesque Georgian streets to puke, threaten passersby and fight the early hours away. So why is it the homeless who bear the brunt of B&NES’ righteous wrath, rather than the better off, drunken little daddy’s boys?

Well, those who choose to get pissed up in bars and clubs pour their paypackets into Bath’s economy. They’re maybe not visibly different from you and I, and they follow more acceptable outlets for anti-social behaviour than Bath’s street dwellers. So a message to the little fascist gatekeepers in office who think it’s okay to decide who stays and who goes: the homeless aren’t a threat and they’re not vermin. You may not like them, or like seeing them, but that’s your fragile sensibilities being offended rather than your wellbeing. B&NES are not expelling the poor for your safety or mine, they’re pursuing gentrification to impress the tourists and keep this looking like a heritage city, whatever that is. The Council’s ‘out of sight, out of mind’ policy is nothing short of classist discrimination that they get away with because chunks of the population view those poorer than they as some undesirable ‘other’, scared of a stereotype rather than fact. Until we address the fundamental problems at the root of our society, rather than allowing those at the top to bully and victimise those in need of solidarity, things can only get worse.

And for Sonya: until we sweep the bureaucrats out of our city, don’t let the bastards grind you down.

South West Women Reclaim The Night

On Friday the 20th of February the streets of Bristol were brought to life when 300 women marched in solidarity to demand safer streets and the right to roam at night without fear. The march was wonderfully colourful and comprised a samba band, belly dancers and females, (and some males) of all ages. The response of onlookers was very positive and was often joined by bystanders. The march lasted for two hours and was followed by speeches, fundraising and awareness-raising stalls and music at the Trinity Centre in Lawrence Hill.
This was organised with the intention of achieving three key goals.

Firstly, improvements in rape conviction rates: alarmingly, the conviction rate of rape cases is in decline, being only 4.2% in Avon and Somerset, highlighting yet another major problem with the judicial system. Secondly, the event sought to obtain volunteers and funding for the Bristol Rape Crisis Centre (email info [at] bristolrapecrisis.org.uk for more information). And thirdly, the event also addressed the fact that, whilst sex education is taught widely in schools, there is still a distinct lack of support and education available to youngsters on respectful relationships and safe, consensual sex. Incentives for such support in schools are advocated by various organisations like Women’s Aid, and the National Children’s Bureau, whose campaign ‘Beyond Biology’ seeks to help young people prepare for the issues they will face as they grow up. If you would like to encourage your local school to take this issue more seriously, a model letter is available through the following link: http://www.bristolfeministnetwork.com/activism.html.

All in all, the event was a great success and will hopefully bring women a step closer to the freedom they continue to fight for.

Bath Activist Network are a local umbrella group campaigning on issues as diverse as development, environmentalism, anti-war, animal rights, workers’ rights and more. Helping to produce The Bath Bomb, we are open to anyone, and our members range from trade unionists to anarchists, liberals to greens, and people who just want to change Bath for the better. Can’t Pay, Shouldn’t Pay

As the recession continues to bite, a group in Bath have had an early tangible success in their effort to stop the working class bearing the brunt of an upper class crisis. A Bath resident approached the group’s regular ‘Can’t Pay, Won’t Pay’ stall in Whiteway as a sudden job cut had left the family struggling and unable to pay Council Tax. Good ol’ B&NES did the decent thing and immediately resorted to court and repossession threats. Fortunately, the campaign’s legal team were able to intervene, stop the court action, and get repayments fixed at a reasonable, humane level. A small start, of course, and it’s going to be a long fight, but the Whiteway group have experienced solicitors, a high level of community support, and a willingness to put bailiffs in their place, wherever that might be. If you know someone having problems with bailiffs, or have any information on the activities, movements or whereabouts of these parasites, you can contact the campaign confidentially on resistbailiffs [at] yahoo.co.uk, or give them a call on 07794 774938.

Bird Abusers Get Cocky

After a slight lull in the local anti-foie gras campaign (at least we had one issue off) – caused by the scum being driven underground by spirited protests – some optimistically-called restaurateurs decided to stick their heads back above the parapet. Apparently disappointed that the recession has yet to finish them off, the masochists at Beaujolais, off Queen Square, have placed the ‘delicacy’ back on the menu. Not content with attracting the inevitable noisy contingent of animal rights activists to a series of demos outside their premises, they’ve also decided to charge enough that most of their customers will probably be joining the demo once they see the bill… If you’re one of the rare minority of locals who haven’t yet been handed a leaflet about foie gras, it’s a pate made from duck or goose liver. But to get the perfect texture, the unfortunate birds spend the last 12 weeks of their lives in battery cages, being force-fed through a tube shoved down their throats, until their diseased livers swell to ten times the natural size. It’s illegal to produce in the UK, but EU laws allow posh-poseur restaurants to acquire the slop, dodgy black market-style, and sell it on at a huge mark-up to the crowds of wealthy aristo-wannabes who throng Bath centre in the evenings. And so, the first in a short series of weekly demos will be happening soon outside a Beaujolais near you. Save the birds! Starve the rich! After all, what else is there to do on a Friday night?

Off The Map, But Still Squatting The Lot

In a follow-up to last month, two days after the illegal eviction of a squatted property in Twerton, members of the Squatters Community Association of Bath retook their home. Despite the first legal hash-job, and Network Rail’s ineptitude in securing the building or indeed the occupiers’ possessions within, the SCABs report that they are currently safe and sound back in from the winter rain, wind, snow (and whatever else the confused climate is passing off as weather), and work has re-commenced eradicating damp and dry rot from the interior of the historic building, replacing damaged beams, rendering the sabotaged power supply safe, and clearing debris. Indeed, whilst Network Rail is more interested in pissing money away on bailiffs and illicit property empire expansion than actually seeing to the work of maintaining its substandard and overpriced rail network, the occupants are getting down to the duty of cleaning away the tangled foliage on the outside of the building, that nearby residents had been demanding for years. In the meantime, further threats of police raids were made on the 18th of last month, but a sixteen-strong resistance demo and communications from the Advisory Service for Squatters persuaded bullyish British Transport Police to no-show.

The Daily New Tesco Express

They breed like flies, don’t they? No sooner than the monopolising spoilt brats wheedle their new store onto Bathwick Street, but there’s due to be another one taking over the existing Somerfield in Weston. And they’ve also been upsetting residents by applying for a 6am to 11pm liquor license that the spineless Council will no doubt grant. Must be déjà vu.

BNP Can’t Do That There Here

What’s in a name? Nick Griffin, leader of far right nationalist BNP, would have posed the exact same question on Sunday the 8th of March, when he was due to talk at a fundraising charity do for the party’s Euro elections. The BNP are so respectable that they were forced to book the function room of the Park Hotel in Gloucestershire under a false name, as usual. However, as antifascists organised to gatecrash, the hotel itself was tipped off as to nature of their hatemongering guests and cancelled, as did their back-up venue. So, instead they all went home, tails between legs. Despite the party’s new drive towards legitimacy – “we’re not racist, but” – the ongoing free ‘Soho Road to the Punjab’ exhibition in Bristol, celebrating 50 years of Bhangra music & culture in the UK (situated in Central Library off College Green), has recently been attacked by racists who stole exhibition materials and left behind a BNP calling card. Equally compromising the party’s be-suited facade is the fact that many high-up members of the group, such as former chief lieutenant Tony Lecomber, dabble in assault, explosives, arson, assault and even the odd attempted contract killing. Fun for all the family, eh?

Erosion Of Civil Liberties: Case #324

Since the 16th of last month, the Terrorism Act 2000 was amended by section 76 of the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008, now making it illegal to take photos, or indeed to “elicit information” about police intelligence services, or the military, which might be “useful to a person… preparing an act of terrorism.” Which seems okay, if you lived in a parallel world where the definition of terror doesn’t get stretched to the point of ridiculousness where leafleters, CND Quakers or letter-writers are considered terrorist: the pen may be mightier than the sword, but it’s hardly on the scale of nailbombs. Previous to this, the presence of cameras has often been a useful tool for keeping police within the law, or at least aiding in prosecutions against them… So remember, gentle tourists, don’t accidentally catch a copper in your holiday snaps, or you might be one of them foreign terrorists, and go down for 10 years.

Attempted RampArt Eviction Under False Pretence

12 March 2009

12 March 2009
Earlier this morning there was a minor fire in the derelict part of the block on Rampart Street. After the fire had been put out, several men knocked on the door at RampARTS, claiming to be from the fire brigade. After they had gained entry under this false pretense, they were revealed to be agents of the owner of the building. The proceeded to call the police and evicted the person inside. Without bothering to ascertain that there were no more people in the house, they started to board up the building, placing security personnel at the doors. In the meantime some people managed to climb back into the building, carrying on with the successful occupation. About 30 people are outside and are asking for everyone to join them and show their support for this community.

The eviction comes 20 days before the G20 hits London, on a day were one of several related events was announced for rampART. The Social Centre had also announced to keep the doors open during the G20.

++ 15:00 ++

Security dragged on person out of house number 7 and beat him up. Police have withdrawn, but firebrigade is there.

People are still inside rampART, and are calling for support to defend it from being boarded up.

++ 16:00 ++

Eviction has been successfully prevented.

Securities are still next door, there are fewer people at rampART, and still calling for more people to come, as they want to retain a strong presence.

WE NEED MORE NUMBERS.

Ramparts has been an amazing community and political activity centre for a few years. There was an eviction order which ran out after the owner failed to act for 6 months. nevertheless, today’s events threaten to take Ramparts away once again, and for good. we need support NOW.

Stop the Rot, Squat the Lot — new Brighton social centre

An attempt to create a social space in Brighton outisde of the banal injustice of landlordship and capitalism, and all the highs and lows that come with it!

squat logo 1An attempt to create a social space in Brighton outisde of the banal injustice of landlordship and capitalism, and all the highs and lows that come with it!

A couple of weeks ago, in the depths of night, a small group of pesky squatters approached Vantage Point with the intent of entering and occupying one of the empty ground floor shop fronts. After a successful entrance, the property was secured and some of our last remaining civil rights celebrated.

The occupied property, the old ‘Gamer Heaven’ games café (7 – 8 Circus Parade), is part of a large building owned by St. James’ Investments, a Mayfair based property developer who buy up the houses, shops or any other building of those in financial crisis for cash, but for significantly less than it’s actual value. It is they that are building the new Tesco superstore to the west of London Road, thus displacing a multitude of small businesses and generally gentrifying the area.
The intention of those involved was to open up the space as a social centre, using it as a blank slate for anyone and everyone to get involved, so artists and musicians were invited to come and make the one room as creative and comfortable as possible. After a frantic week of tatting, painting, building and generally organising with ridiculously low funds, the space was opened to the public on Friday the 27th of February. There was live music, a continuation of the Smash EDO ‘Art not War’ art gallery, food and a small info shop, as well as some other bits ‘n’ bobs. The whole event went down in a beautifully haphazard way, and despite everything happening in a completely different manner to what was expected, the consensus was that a good thing had happened.
There was no contact for a week, despite the party going on until 4am, but on Monday the 2nd of March, the building manager attempted to enter. After the briefest of conversations through the door, with his contribution being ‘f***ing squatters!’, a handful of suits turned up. They didn’t want to talk, and it was obvious that they didn’t know the law, but it was explained to them that there were proper legal channels through which they had to go in order to evict the occupiers.

Accusations of sexual abuse!

Despite this, on Thursday the 5th of March Rossendales security, whose slogan is ‘Proud to be Professionals’, issued the occupants with a ‘Notice to Quit’, precariously claiming that under section 33 of the Criminal Justice Act 1994 (CJA), and section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 (CJPOA), they had the right to remove any people or vehicles still residing in the property after twenty-four hours of issuing the notice.

However, a quick liaison with the the fantastically useful and greatly appreciated Advisory Service for Squatters (ASS) revealed that there is no section 33 of the CJA, but section 33 of the CJPOA deals with the “Abolition of corroboration requirements under the Sexual Offences Act 1956”. Now, despite the squatter stereotype, we are not sexual offenders, so it is hard to see where Rossendales were going with this!

Further on, and the ASS revealed that section 61 of the CJPOA deals with “Powers to remove trespassers on land”, but subsection (9) makes it clear that this only refers to trespassers on common land, and since the occupied property is not common land but private property, the section does not apply, and the matter is only resolvable in a court of law, as the suits were told when we first spoke to them!

Anyway, the matter was resolved by the ASS faxing a letter explaining this to Rossendales security, as well as contacting Brighton police to confirm that any attempt at forced entry would result in a swift arrest, and guess what…the bailiffs never showed.

Same old abstraction bollocks

To continue the bombardment Brighton squatters receive by various authorities, the police reared their ugly head on Monday (the 5th) accusing those inside of abstraction (the illegal use of electricity). When an occupant asked who was at the door, one pig called himself Phil and asked to be let in, but when they were refused entry they proceeded to try and kick the door in, an illegal act considering they didn’t have a warrant.

However, due to this common attempt by the cops at a quick an easy eviction, Brighton squatters have got quite savvy with the legalities of electricity, and quickly produced a letter from the occupants to the supplier confirming their intent to pay for any electricity they used, and a reply from the supplier to the occupants accepting this affirmation. Eventually the police left, but what was interesting was that both of them were recognisable by a number of the squatters as the team that had illegally evicted them from a residential property earlier in the year. Nice try Sergeant Bellfield and the illegal squat eviction team, but you won’t get us out this time!

After all this malarkey, the space is still there and waiting to be used by anyone, for whatever you want. So far we have had acoustic music nights, films, food, as well as ever-changing artwork and an infoshop. We still have not received court papers but are expecting them in the next few days, so come along and enjoy the space whilst it is still there! Just pop down, or email brightonfreespace@riseup.net.

1) THE CLIMATE CAMP IN 2009

The Climate Camp new year national gathering made huge progress, conceiving a strategic decision to focus on the failed economic system, and developing four ambitious and exciting projects stemming from this. If you weren’t at the gathering, or haven’t yet had a chance to look over the decisions made, check them out: http://climatecamp.org.uk/?q=node/501

The most urgent project going ahead is “Climate Camp hits the City”, a one day and night camp in the square mile of London taking place on April 1st, the eve of the G20. Climate Camp has never organised an action at such a fast pace, and so everyone is encouraged to get networking locally across the UK to make Climate Camp first event of 2009 an enormous success! To find out more about the details of the G20, go to http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20

2) PRACTICAL INFORMATION

CONVERGE. There will be a convergence centre from Saturday the 28th April, so you can go to the ‘Put People First’ march by the big NGO’s and Unions, and stay in London until the Wednesday 1st April, and camping in the City.
There will be plenty of work to do over those last days! See www.climatecamp.org.uk nearer the time for the exact location.

ARRIVE. Come for the day, or if possible come for the day and night! The adventure will begin at noon, April 1st, European Climate Exchange, Hasilwood House, 62 Bishopsgate, EC2N 4AW. More details nearer the time. For some background on carbon markets, and why we’re shutting down the exchange, visit http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20-why

LOOK AFTER EVERYONE. Although we hope to provide some food, and shelter for those who want to sleep, please try to arrive as self-sufficient as possible — when you are camping in the heart of the financial district, there are no guarantees that we’ll be able to have much infrastructure!
Bring water, warm clothes, a pop-up tent if you’ve got one, sleeping bag, and if you can, some blankets and tarp. Carrying your own food to share and water will also put less strain on our kitchen, and please arrive well fed.

TRANSFORM. We also want to transform the financial district, both symbolically and visually into a physical manifestation of our desired worlds. Doing that is up to all of us. We want our space to look beautiful. So come with your own plans, costumes, theater, entertainment and spectacle. Wind turbines, mobile cinemas, action plans — whatever you think you can pull off.

Let’s imagine another world or two or three.…

3) INFORMATION FOR NEIGHBOURHOODS AND AUTONOMOUS GROUPS

If you are part of a Climate Camp neighbourhood, or would like to be part of one, contact your local group: http://climatecamp.org.uk/node/40.

If you are in a local group, give the Process Group (process@climatecamp.org.uk) your details for the Climate Camp website.

With an exciting process up and running again, people are hopefully looking to get involved. However, our Local Group page is out of date.

Therefore, if you are a local Climate Camp group (whether or not you were a neighbourhood at the Camp ’08), give us some text about the basic details (when and where you meet, contact details, a bit about yourselves) and we’ll get it on the website. We can also arrange for your local group to have an @climatecamp.org.uk email address.

If groups arrive sorted, that will put less strain on everyone. Think about how you would like to transform our space, and come with the materials you need to do so. We are also urging all groups to have back up plans and actions. There is no Planet B, but everyone should have a Plan B…

4) WORKSHOPS AT CLIMATE CAMP PART 1

The camp is looking for workshops for the day. We would love to hear from you if you can offer a workshop, especially (but not limited to) workshops on carbon trading, market solutions to climate change, and the economic crisis. We are also really keen to hear from you if you can offer music, street theatre or anything else which will make the day inspiring and educational!

Please let us know if you would be able to offer a workshop. Contact: at g20workshops at riseup.net

5) LEGAL OBSERVERS FOR CLIMATE CAMP PART 1

Want to be a trained legal observer? If so we really want lots of legal observation for the G20 camp on the 1st April. There will be a training event on 31st March. Remember we need people for both the 1st and 2nd of April. Email: legal at climatecamp.org.uk.

6) FOOD AT THE G20 CAMP, MESSAGE FROM THE FOOD GROUP

First. Bring plenty of fresh WATER; Bring Food; Bring a bog roll!; Bring bin liners to take away rubbish; bring a bowl, cup and fork.

Second. Do NOT bring propane bottles or sharp knives.

Third. If you can bring a Rocket Stove — it would be wonderful — it’s proper camping and visually cool.

April 1st is only a week away! Below is the crucial information you will need for camping in the square mile during the G20.

Please forward this to your friends, any groups you are a part of, and post it on websites. Check out http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20 for updates. Once again, our list goes to 11.

(1) THE SWOOP & OVER-POLICING

To be successful, we must all arrive at the Climate Exchange at the same time. We must swoop in from different directions, using different means to arrive within a minute or two of each other. Its a good idea to meet up with your friends early, and somewhere within easy reach of the Climate Exchange. Then, at the appropriate moment, leave quickly, to arrive at exactly 12:30. You may even want to practice beforehand.

Be aware that in light of current over-policing tactics, if you miss the swoop, you may be unable to join the camp. In places where our numbers are too low, the police may attempt to stop and search individuals, and confiscate items to prevent us from setting up the camp safely. We can avoid this by moving confidently and together. The police may also attempt to surround people to prevent us from moving (sometimes called a “kettle”). Nearby tube stations, particularly Liverpool Station, as well as the Bank (where the G20-meltdown protest is occurring at noon), are possible locations where the police may try to kettle people. If you see a kettle forming and don’t want to be stuck for the day in one, move and help others move out of it before it closes.

You are likely to have greater freedom of movement if you’ve planned your swoop and know the area. Because things may change on the day, please take copies of our map with grid reference points, and have a person in your group subscribed to the text alerts.

(2) TEXT ALERTS & COMMUNICATION

Things may change on the day, perhaps significantly. There is a text message news service which will be available in advance and during the G20 Leaders meeting. We strongly recommend that people subscribe to it. It is possible, even likely, that the place that we finally set up camp will not be the Climate Exchange.

http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20/text-updates

We also use Twitter http://twitter.co /ClimateCamp but please note that twitter does not reach mobile phone numbers and is now a web-service, so on the day this will only be useful for those with web-enabled phones or those with friends at home ready to call.

You may want to also exchange phone numbers with your friends and people in other groups so that our communication network is as decentralised as possible.

(3) THE MAP

A map of the city, with grid reference points will be released at http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20/map in the coming days. Please print copies for you and your friends. It will be used on the day when the text alert gives the location of the camp, or any other information throughout the day.

Various carbon off-set companies, carbon trading firms, greenwashing firms, and other climate-criminals will also be highlighted on the map. If the police prevent us from safely setting up the camp, groups are especially encouraged to do an action at one of these locations, or any other location they have researched. It can also aid communication between you and your mates. Losing your friends in a crowd really sucks!

(4) INFOPOINTS & BRIEFINGS

From Thursday March 26th until Thursday April 2nd rampARTS will be a G20 infopoint, open to drop by from 2–10 pm. The Camp for Climate Action will have information there during this period.

On Saturday March 28th at 5 pm, and on Sunday March 29th at 2 pm, the camp will be serving tea and cake for those who want to meet up and share information, or make some banners and props.

On Tuesday March 31st at 7 pm, there will be a briefing at rampART, with a particular focus on new people who need information about the April 1st camp.

rampART is located at 15 ‑17 Rampart Street, London E1 2LA (near Whitechapel, off Commercial Rd). rampart[at]mutualaid.org, 07050 618445
http://therampart.wordpress.com/location-contact/

(5) SLEEPING SPACE

If you are coming from out of town, places are available to stay! Please contact us early so that we can reserve you a place. Email iwanttocrashinasquatfortheg20@hushmail.com to let them know how many people will be staying, and the dates you need.

(6) THINGS TO BRING

If you’re staying for the full 24 hours, please check out http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20/what-to-bring for what to bring.

(7) AUTONOMOUS ACTIONS AND MEDIA

Are you planning an autonomous action and would you like to try and get media there as soon as it happens? You can chat to the climate camp media crew about it beforehand who can point the media your way, or can help you get your press release out. You don’t have to give them the details beforehand, but do get in touch with press@climatecamp.org.uk or call 07040 900905 to arrange something.

(8) LEGAL

Our legal team have prepared a handy crib sheet of information about your legal rights and what to do if something goes wrong. These will be handed out on the day, but there’s no guarantee you’ll get one before encountering the police, so we advise you to print a copy to bring along.
Check it out at http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20/legal

(9) WORKSHOPS & CEILIDH

Workshops and music are on! Workshops will include: Trading our way into trouble, the Fossil Fuel Economy, A history of Direct Action, Techno fixes, Transition to a low carbon economy, the latest climate science from Copenhagen, Mobilising for Copenhagen, Debt and Climate Change, Carbon Trading and Copenhagen, Sustainable Activism, Samba, Poetry vs Climate Change … and more!

Check out http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20/events for the latest schedule

We also need more musicians to play at the ceilidh. More musicians and sound systems are welcome!

(10) PUT PEOPLE FIRST MARCH AND LEAFLETING

A Camp for Climate Action block for the Put People First March on Saturday the 28th of March will be meeting at 11 am outside Charing Cross National Rail Station, on the strand. We need help handing out leaflets during the march. 07534 598733 for more info.

(11) IT’S A NUMBERS GAME

The only way we can win this is through a mass mobilisation of people. With a week to go we can still get people to join us for the camp. Talk to your friends and bring them along; change your status and profile picture on social networks, and invite your contacts to our facebook event http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=49600653225 . On the day, make sure you let the people back home know how the camp is going, and how they can disseminate our message. If each of us brings someone along, we double our numbers and our strength.

——

Final update (31st March):

Hi campers, not long to go before we join each to set up camp in the city on April 1st! This is the final update, please read it carefully and forward it to all your friends who are coming…

WHAT TO BRING:

We hope many of us will be staying overnight, please bring a popup tent, food, 4 litres of water, warm clothes, hand cleaning gel (for hygiene, we might not get water) and whatever you might need for 24 hours of rebel camping adventure. (a full list is here http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20/what-to-bring)

HOW TO DO IT:

1) SYNCHRONIZE YOUR WATCHES: It is important that we swoop at exactly the same time, and those arriving too late or too early might not make it in. You can use the speaking clock or this: http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com

2) PLUG IN: Sign up to text messages here: http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20/text-updates You will only get text messages if there is a change of plan.

3) PREPARE: Print out the map from http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20/map and if you still need somewhere to sleep the night before check http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20/sleepspace Remember that there may be limited toilet facilities so don’t arrive with bursting bowels !!!

3) SWOOP DOWN: Arrive at 62 Bishop’s Gate, the European Climate Exchange at 12:30 on the dot. Swoop swiftly and stealthily from a location of your choice. It might be good to avoid Bank and Liverpool Street stations where other protest groups are meeting at 11.00am as you may be unable to leave due to police Kettles (when police surround a crowd). Avoid kettles at all costs and if when you get to the Climate Exchange the police invite you into a protest pen, say “no thanks, we’ll camp elsewhere”, keep moving and wait for text messages.

4) SPREAD INSPIRATION: You can use your phone to send reports, pictures, audio etc from the streets to Indymedia. Its very easy – see http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2009/03/425262.html for numbers and details.

If you are covering the action using twitter, please include the hashtags #g20cc or both #g20 and #protest so we can pull tweets into one single feed of the event.

5) AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST — ENJOY: The next few days will be extraordinary days for extraordinary times…

Council’s £50,000 attack on volunteer-run social centre

Press release from The Common Place, for immediate release 7pm 27th Feb 2009

The Common Place logoPress release from The Common Place, for immediate release 7pm 27th Feb 2009
Today Leeds city centre’s volunteer-run community space The Common Place lost the court battle to keep its entertainment licence (1). After three problem-free years the licence was withdrawn by Leeds City Council in July 2008 leaving the social centre without its main income. Leeds City Council perceived The Common Place as not being a true members club as we are open to huge variety of events and types of people. This openness had also led to lax procedures when signing non-members in, a condition of the licence.

The Common Place is a space used by many of the most marginalised and vulnerable members of society (2). Carl Gallager of Zermansky and Partners, acting for The Common Place estimates that Leeds City Council have spent in excess of £50 000 bringing this case to court in a attempt to shut down the centre, despite a chorus of support from dozens of groups who use the centre and over 1000 messages of support (3).

Common Place Volunteer Amy Stephenson said, “It beggars belief that despite the deepening recession and the lack of affordable, social city centre venues that the council has spent so much time and effort on the closure of this much-loved resource.”

Dom Marsh said, “The Common Place is exactly the sort of place that the council should be encouraging. It provides free space to groups who might struggle to find affordable spaces as well as an amazing gig venue for up-and-coming local performers.”

The Common Place Management Committee repeatedly attempted to meet with the Council licensing department to avoid a court case and to reassure them of our status and capability as a members’ club. However, this attempt to identify and rectify any perceived problems was rejected outright by the council.

The future of the Common Place is now under serious threat. Without licensed events the ability of the social centre to provide a resource to the people of Leeds is uncertain.

Notes
1) The Common Place is a volunteer run members club and social centre at Wharf Street LS1 — details at www.thecommonplace.org.uk

3) The common place received over 1100 on-line signatures on it’s petition and over 30 letters of support from individuals and groups including The Refuge Council, Leeds Metropolitan University Union, Leeds University Union, Church Action on Poverty, Leeds Stepping Out, Ladyfest Leeds, The Healthy Living Network.

In Newcastle, the world’s biggest coal port, community groups have been campaigning against the doubling of coal exports from Newcastle Harbour. There have been three community blockades of Newcastle Harbour now, and each of them has managed to keep coal ships from entering or leaving for most of the day. Climate Camp at the European Climate Exchange, followed by a “celebration” of BP’s centenary at the British Museum; interspersed with local actions all over the country and the world!

Climate camp hits the city: stopping carbon markets // because nature doesn’t do bailouts
On April 1st the G20 leaders arrive in London. At a time of climate crisis their response to the market meltdown is emergency loans to car manufacturers, increased spending to encourage consumption, and bailouts for the very people who got us into this mess — just the thing that will make the climate crisis worse. Don’t let them get away with it: join our camp in the Square Mile! Gather at noon, April 1st, at the European Climate Exchange, Hasilwood House, 62 Bishopsgate, EC2N 4AW.
www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20

“Celebrate” BP’s centenary: Tell them the party’s over!
For reasons unfathomable yet deeply pleasing, BP has chosen Fossil Fools to celebrate its centenary. This will take place at the British Museum, where the not-so-great and the far-from-good will quaff cocktails, snaffle canapes and watch a celebratory film. Join us between 6–7pm, to say ‘Your party’s over!’ Bring banners, musical instruments, a sense of climate justice and a nonsense of foolery. Meet at 6pm at the British Museum’s Gt. Russell St. gate.

On our route we’ll be talking to local people, organising bicycled power films and events, holding public discussions and displays, and linking groups from different areas to help strengthen isolated campaigns. RECENT HAPPENINGS:

1. Biofuelled attacks in Sumatra, Indonesia – 18.12.08
In the rush to clear subsistence farms and forest for agro-fuel plantation, local villages in the global South are suffering. On 18th December 2008 the village of Suluk Bongkal in Sumatra, Indonesia was attacked by hundreds of armed police and paramilitaries with fire-arms and teargas and was also fire-bombed from a helicopter. Hundreds of houses were burned down and later bulldozed. Most of the villagers fled into the forests and others were arrested. The attack is linked to a subsidiary company of Sinar Mas, Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) which is clearing land for pulp and paper tree plantations. Sinar Mas is one of the biggest owners of palm oil and pulp and paper plantations in Indonesia. A protest letter is collecting signatories to send to the Indonesian authorities.

2. Plane Stupid turns Southampton airport into a refugee camp — 17.01.09
Activists chained themselves to the entrance of Southampton airport and erected tents at the main entrance in a bid turn the regional airport into a climate refugee camp. In addition to setting up camp, activists formally submitted a planning application with Eastleigh Borough Council to turn the airport into refugee housing.

3. Climate Rush activists lock on to Parliament — 20.01.01
On the day that Parliament voted about the third runway, nine Climate Rush activists highlighted the high farce that is UK democracy by chaining themselves to the gates of Parliament. Despite staying for hours and entertaining tourists and the press, when the police finally cut them out, the activists walked away scot free.

4. E.On Ref Off! – 24.01.09
On Saturday 24th January a group of London Climate Camp activists turned up at Stamford Bridge dressed as football referees to show E.ON the red card. Over 40,000 Chelsea and Ipswich fans arriving for the game heard us blowing the whistle on E.ON’s dirty FA Cup sponsorship money, and thousands of them were personally handed an “E.ON F.OFF” red card explaining how the company is making foul profits from the climate crisis. It was all good fun and reactions were pretty positive — E.ON themselves would have paid tens of thousands to get the opposite publicity for their brand!

5. A not-so-Royal welcome for the nuclear industry — 09.02.09
Hundreds of tourists, visiting the Palace for the Changing of the Guard, were amused to see “nuclear guards” taking their place at the gates. They held up a large banner reading “Nuclear Power is Not the Answer to Climate Chaos!” and a placard reading “Royal Nuclear Family? No Thanks!”, drawing attention to the fact that Prince Andrew, the UK’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment, was hosting a gala lunch at the Palace for the nuclear industry, presumably to plot how best to promote their toxic greenwash agenda at home and abroad.

6. Manchester RBS branch roof occupation — 11.02.09
Around 35 students held a climate change ‘Eviction Demonstration’ outside (and on top of) a Royal Bank of Scotland branch at the University of Manchester Students Union. The group from People and Planet also submitted a motion to the Union General Meeting proposing that the Union does not renew the lease for RBS’ branch when it expires in January 2010. Students climbed up on to the roof of the branch, and dropped banners advertising RBS’ fossil fuel investments. Others engaged in ‘rapid information dessimination’, racing off to speak to as many people as they could in 20 minutes before returning back to the RBS branch to compare scores.

7. Occupation of Kelsterback Forest, Frankfurt Airport, Germany — Ongoing The occupation of the threatened Kelsterback Forest continues. This is a large and beautiful forest that has already been encroached upon for existing airport infrastructure and is “in the way” of a planned, additional runway.

8. New report – Catering for the Coal Industry A personal account from an activist on the ground in Columbia, documenting resistance to exploitation in Columbia’s’ coal industry. The report is focused on the lives of those who prepare and serve the food necessary for the mine to function. They want people outside of La Loma to hear of their inhumane, dangerous and humiliating working conditions. Reading and sharing this report helps to break the invisibility of the exploitation within the global coal infrastructure.

Expected Outcome: Broad discussions on respective mitigation goals for developed and developing countries. about global climate issues. The second WCC in 1979 resulted in the creation of the U.N.‘s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. http://www.wmo.int/pages/world_climate_conference/index_en.html Expected Outcome: Group will address climate prediction, disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change.

Expected Outcome: Nation’s set negotiating positions. http://unfccc.int/meetings/items/2654.php

7–18 December 2009
