Today at the Shell-sponsored Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Natural History Museum, 20 activists inspired by the Camp for Climate Action (1), smeared oil over the photographs. This was an act of outrage at Shell’s painfully transparent attempts to greenwash its reputation via cultural sponsorship.

Shell’s sponsorship of the Natural History Museum is deeply ironic, since it devastates wildlife and the environment around the world through the extraction and production of ever more oil and gas.

Today’s action comes hard on the heels of the release of Shell’s 2006 financial figures, documenting the 13 billions of pounds made at the expense of people and the planet. Shell’s activities extracting oil result in major ecological and social impacts. Trading 3.6 million barrels of crude oil equivalent a day, the company is also a major contributor to climate change, which has been predicted to wipe out a quarter of all species on the planet by 2050, and to devastate the poorest regions of the planet (2). The extent of the threat was highlighted on Friday with the release of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change fourth report.

For all these reasons, the climate camp activists are calling on the Natural History Museum to end its oily sponsorship deal with Shell.

As the black oil-like liquid has been spread over the glass covering the photographs, the activists have not damaged the work itself. As Dan Baker said, “This is not an attack on the work of the photographers. Shell does not deserve to have its name associated with their beautiful images.” A banner reading “Make Nature History Museum — sponsored by Shell” was also unfurled.

Activist Daisy Williams said, “This action sheds light on the ugly stain that covers this exhibition as a result of the Museum’s collusion with Shell. We’re here to make sure everyone knows about this despicable greenwash sponsorship deal. With more public pressure, we can kick Shell out of the Natural History Museum!”

On 3rd February 07 the Climate Change campaigners were joined by Rhythms of Resistance Manchester to raise awareness about global climate change issues. The event took place in the city centre. Campaigners gave out newspapers and leaflets informing people about what they could do to make a difference and highlighting detrimental government plans regarding future energy provision for the UK.

Rhythms of Resistance played drawing in spectators who were then treated to environmental street theatre. The atmosphere was positive and people seemed to engage with the issues.

The Trebanos Five — “Ramblers” arrested on route of National Grids Pipeline

This morning ( Wed 31-01-2007 ) five people were arrested on the public footpath running through the construction site in Trebanos, South Wales.

The Trebanos Five.…. Whose quick decision making left a bit to be desired were arrested today for “learning Italian, having a picnic and reading” on an illegaly closed public footpath in Trebanos.….. Having being given 5 minutes to move on, they were handcuffed and manhandled whilst deciding what to do next( three minutes later.…) They are now known as The Trebanos Faffing Five !!!

The footpath was subject to an “undated” closure notice on Thursday 25th January 2007. The notice gave 7 days notice. Today’s arrests on the footpath were within the 7 day period and those arrested are seeking legal advice with regards their wrongful arrest.

Neath Port Talbot CBC who closed the footpath are soon to be subject to a Judicial Revue for the way they handled the planning process. National Grid are now threatening local people in South Wales that they will sue them should their work be delayed any longer.…

National Grids Security Guards, sorry I mean The South Wales Police Force, seemed very pleased with themsleves and were filmed and photographed by a local resident concerned for the safety of those arrested.
Up to 40 police officers were on hand to arrest the five young people.

National Grids 48″ dia, high pressure pipeline has caused a storm of controvesy. The enviromental issues, safety issues, the lack of democracy and the abuse of human rights have drawn support for the protestors from all of the UK, The Bahamas, California and Rossport.

The Trebanos Five were arrested within a few feet of the site where National Grid are attempting to dig a 30 mtrs deep vertical shaft through which will travel the 48″ pipe. The pipe goes through much of the South Wales Coalfield and also through the Brecon Beacons National Park.

National Grid claim this pipeline is essential for our future energy needs. That has been disproved using their own data. This pipeline is not needed, it is not wanted and it is a dangerous project which will only add to our carbon footprint. The continued use of fossil fuels, which is clearly supported by our government and police force, can only end in disaster. We may not see all of the effects today, but our children and their children will have to live with the results of our blatant disregard of the Earth.

Hell at Shell petrol Stations: London blockade

Report 1 — On the evening of the 24th January two Shell petrol stations in north London were blockaded by activists who are concerned over Shell’s aggressive business practices and poor human rights record.

Report 1 — On the evening of the 24th January two Shell petrol stations in north London were blockaded by activists who are concerned over Shell’s aggressive business practices and poor human rights record.

The non-violent actions took place at Shell stations on Holloway Road and Upper Street in north London. No arrests were made. However some motorist became aggressive, made threats and insulted blockaders. The police did not over react and one officer made the comment “suppose we can look this up on the usual website can we?” Here it is officers.

After the last action at the station on Holloway Road one very friendly black cab driver congratulated blockaders and asked for publicity cards to hand out to his passangers. Thank for your support mate.

Report 2 — On 24th January London Rising Tide once again helped their friends at Rhythms of Resistance Samba Band and others keep Shell aware that the campaign to prevent the damaging high pressure gas pipeline and refinery near Rossport in County Mayo, Ireland is still rolling.

…and rolling is what it was, with even a bit of rocking. We tried the new tactic with measured success of short spells at a series of North London Shell garages blockading the entrance and exits with band, banners and bandanas (there was also mention of bananas when it came to irate drivers).

Holloway Road was the first stop where having set up and told the gas guzzlers on the forecourt that we were not blocking them in, one of them decided to drive at us from behind. Having stepped back just in time, banging the window as it surged past, the driver got out of her 4 x 4 (funny that, it always seems to be) and violently threatened to do unspeakable things to us as individuals from about 2 inches away. More fossil fuelled driver lunacy followed and we decided to get rolling to the next garage when pushing came to pull us away as plod were summoned.

On arriving at the familiar territory of the Shell Upper Street garage we kitted up and lasted a bit longer, even turning away petrol thirsty black cab drivers, before more violence threatening behaviour from people blockaded out. The thin line of Samba resisted and held out as we turned away the ubiquitous Islington SUVs. The usual support from the Fire Brigade was good for keeping up our spirits.

After that it was back to Holloway Rd with less abuse but more plod and we retired to the pub when they called for back-up since the final whistle of the Spurs v Arsenal game was about to be blown along with plod’s patience.

On reflection over out stout we agreed it was desperately sad that such anger of particularly 4 x 4 drivers only had the unhealthy outlet of threatening us. Especially when Shell’s statuspheric disregard of the planet’s atmosphere and the atmosphere of living in Mayo, Ogoniland or Sakhalin seemed a better place to vent their frustration.

Reports from Monday , Tuesday and Thursday at proposed Shell refinery site, of Shell to Sea protesters and photos of same.

Back to work for Shell to Sea

Monday the 8th saw a return to work for Shell and its contractors at the proposed Ballinaboy terminal site. Shell to Sea protesters turned out in force to welcome them back, as the Gardai welcomed us back. A group of about 70 locals assembled as they have every working day predawn at 7 am to protest against the terminal and shell. The Gardai turned out in force(no pun intended). There was a changing of the Gardai, the grunts at least but most of the senior officers were the same tired, aggressive, drink smelling clowns that we have been dealing with, and assaulted by, for months.

People attempted to block trucks with new enthusiasm by standing in front of them. This was soon followed by the usual assaults taking place with Gardai flinging people in the drains and ditches, shoving people to the ground etc.

Apparently the Gardai are unfamiliar with the process of arresting someone if they break the law, but then perhaps there is no law being broken? Supt Joe Gannon explained in the Garda Review that the political decision has been taken to not arrest protesters, so as not to create “martyrsâ€?. This standing decision has resulted in Gardai using other means to dominate the situation, namely assaulting and intimidating people.

After isolating one individual, Garda GW 65 Sean Colleran took his guitar and case, took out the guitar and threatened to break it before leaving it on the wet road, who said school yard bullies grow up?
Approximately 40 Gardai were deployed on the ground with a similar number retained on a bus on stand by.
Monday evening Shell to Sea attended the monthly Mayo Co. Co. meeting in Castlebar to protest against Mayo Co. Co. collusion with Shell in relation to the EIS, the planning permission and the cold venting. About 30 protesters attended this, having watched and listened to over 2 1/2 hours of Councillors’ moaning about the hedge trimming operation s and other road related issues, the monthly meeting finally commenced properly, and protesters had to briefly interrupt the meeting to demand a legitimate response to ongoing issues which the Co. Co. has tried to brush under the carpet. On receiving assurances that these issues would be replied to all protesters exited the meeting.

Tuesday 9th

The morning of Tuesday 9th saw similar scenes, with an attempt by Mr.Corduff to educate the Gardai as to what their actions were facilitating, namely profits of big business and the local populations death, be it from a sudden explosion or slowly from various forms of pollution to the whole area, land, water and air. Below are images from today, apologies for lack of clarity, its still dark in the morning and the Gardai jackets reflect the flash and obscure the photos. My camera also received a punch from Sgt. Robinson, possibly as “revengeâ€? because someone dared to step out over the white line and block a truck for approx 5 seconds before being rugby tackled by himself and thrown at the ditch.

For anyone who read the Garda review magazine which had a special on the issue, you may remember how the Gardai are feeling hard done by because they do not receive the Irish speaking bonus when stationed in Belmullet, yet apparently speak Irish everyday at the service hatch in the station. One might then think that some member of the force can speak Irish, fluently or otherwise but I have yet to see a Garda who can even take a name or address in Irish let alone speak Irish, despite being required to do so when addressed in Irish as many people do so when demonstrating each day at Ballinaboy.

Thursday 11th January 2007.
Day 100 of a community under siege

A storm continued to rage from the night before as demonstrators gathered at 7am. As the time came to move at 7.30 the decision was taken to drive up the road to the terminal in front of the Shell convoy as opposed to the normal walk. Everyone hopped into their vehicles and drove slowly up the road, the Gardai being caught off guard didn’t know how to respond or deal with the situation effectively. Eventually they managed to stop most of the protester convoy and waved on the Shell traffic. Demonstrators parked at HQ outside the proposed Ballinaboy terminal and gathered at the entrance gates.
Attempting to appeal to the morals and conscience of the Gardai proved futile as they kept people back to escort the Shell stone trucks on site.

Then a grinning Superintendent Joe Gannon, who has until recently played a more low key role strutted up behind the Garda line as he drafted up more and more Gardai until they had approx 40–50 there and then gave the order to drive the protesters back, despite the fact that the trucks where getting in. With out warning the Gardai as a whole charged forward and proceeded to shove, push or wallop all in front of them ‚driving all before them. Mary Corduff, Rossport 5 Willie Corduff’s wife, was knocked to the ground and then dragged by the Gardai as they continued to charge forward. They kept shoving people back until the entire area in front of Shells site was clear and everyone was removed form the road also. Sgt Butler MY28 was clearly delighted at his chance to once again bully and harass people, grinning, laughing and taunting after the charge.
Amazingly the largest single Garda operation in the country, executed every day one way or the other, failed to make any news.

PLEASE PASS THIS EMAIL AROUND TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE

Exxon is the ultimate Global Warming Villain…….

Exxon is the world’s largest oil company, making $ 1,000+ a second, and the highest annual profits for a company ever, in 2005 ($ 36 billion)…….

Exxon has used its vast wealth to back the Bush administration in the US. It has used the influence that that buys it to ensure that the US continues to block progress towards an international emissions reduction treaty – the only realistic way to bring down the global total of greenhouse gas emissions and prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate…………………….

Exxon funds a variety of right wing, neo-liberal, think tanks like the “Competitive Enterprise Institute” which lobby against action to fight climate change, and are influential in shaping Republican party policy………

Exxon is the company most closely associated with the climate and energy policies of the Bush administration in the US, which are identical to those recommended by Exxon……….

Exxon has run a cynical campaign of disinformation on climate change, funding a professional “denial industry” that has – in all probability — delayed effective global action on climate change by years……………….Some elements of that “industry” are identical to those previously funded by the Tobacco industry to undermine the science that proved the health damage done by smoking…..
Exxon has a deliberate policy to confuse the science of climate change, exaggerate uncertainties and undermine the scientific consensus. It funds the tiny minority of oddball scientists who question global warming so that they get hugely disproportionate media exposure and appear to represent a substantial body of respectable scientific opinion………

Exxon was even condemned, in September 2006, by the Royal Society for funding bogus science……

Exxon asked the Whitehouse (in a letter published in the New York Times) to remove Bob Watson (whose views they didn’t like) from chairmanship of the IPCC (the UN panel of climate scientists) and the Whitehouse did just that…………….

Exxon recommended that Harlan Watson be appointed as the US chief negotiator at the UN Climate Talks and the Whitehouse did just that. Watson has been wrecking the negotiations ever since…………….

Exxon marginally softened its anti-environmental stance after the retirement of Lee Raymond as CEO (now employed by Bush to produce a report giving advice on future energy policy !) but continues to fund climate disinformation and remains the mainstay of the lobbying machine against action on climate – not only in the USA but also Europe – see, eg, this article from the Independent from December 2006 at
 http://news.independent.co.uk/europe/article2054654.ece

It funds the “International Policy Network” to argue against action on climate in the UK.
Exxon……etc…etc… ( see further our website  http://www.campaigncc.org/stopexxon.html
US anti-Exxon coalition  http://www.exxposeexxon.com/ detailed analysis  http://www.exxonsecrets.org/ )

As ever more people die in droughts, floods and hurricanes — and the world hurtles ever faster towards climate catastrophe — we cannot afford a company that acts the way that ExxonMobil does….

critical mass fri 29 december

We met at the usual time and place of 6pm at central library in Manchester city centre. There were about ten of us, numbers being a bit low becasue many people had gone to other towns and cities for christmas and new year, but making up the numbers we had people from Aberdeen, York and Swansea!

We rode around the roads for an hour and a half with the bicycle
soundsystem playing a mixture of Slayer and Country/ folk. Some people cheered us and some drivers tried to kill us by dangerously overtaking us and driving on the wrong side of the road nearly into on-coming cars.

One woman said that we were being mean to her children becasue we were slowing her down and so I explained that we were celebrating bikes over car culture because amongst other things (and in addition to other groups of society) cars give children asthma and run them over and so maybe she’d like to reconsider and support us, but she later overtook us slowing down an ambulance that we were making space for to get through, she didnt get very far, about 200 yards to the next lights! She would have been quicker on a bike (of course!) Oh well. but that was really the only randomly vaguely negative incident most people seemed pleased to see us or inquisistive about why we were riding.

It was a fun ride and nice that some new people came on it. Hopefully
we’ll see them again. After the ride some of us went for a beer in the bar. nice.

We were going to have a benefit night on the january mass but as its
pangea (a big student night) where lots of people seem to be going and lots of our friends bands seem to be playing at we thought that february mass would be better (its also my birthday!). But at the next one someone will hopefully come down and film and interview some people on the mass for a film about cycling in Manchester I’m trying to make. On that note can anyone that knows film stuff that might be up for helping get in touch.

thought you might like to see this too posted by someone in the GMCC

At the NHM we wandered through the crowds holding our ‘Lappland is melting’ and ‘Reindeer can’t swim’ placards, explaining that excessive consumption was melting our ho-ho-home, and as such it was going to be tough to ensure a good supply of presents in the future. We had a bit of interaction with people waiting to skate on the British Airways-sponsored ice rink. Half the rink was closed because it was too wet and slushy — the ice had melted. The employee with the thankless task of trying to herd us out disagreed with me when I suggested that this was symbolic. His word? ‘Ironic.’

‘See you next year!’, promised the mouthiest Santa as we left, (since monthly visits are planned by SAEC’s friends London Rising Tide in 2007.) Then it was on to join reinforcements in Oxford Street, using the tube journey as a chance to thank the punters for taking public transport a well as smiling at bewildered nippers wondering if we could have any connection to the real thing. Taking up residence at Oxford Circus, some anti-corporate carols were given a good seeing to, and leaflets distributed. A festive foray into Niketown resulted in a swift but friendly expulsion, while a minstrel-like wander into the big Apple shop triggered a grumpier response. The plea to ‘Sing your own songs to eachother this Christmas!’ was interpreted as some sort of advertising by a competitor, and this as well as some live and direct carolling inside the shop led to the police being called. But we stood our ground when asked by the humbugging coppers to move away from the shop window, and soon enough they evaporated.

By that time we were pretty much Santa‑d out, so decamped to a caff to fill up on caffeine and divest ourselves of the magic but by this time somewhat bedraggled beards and suits that made people smile at us and take our subversive leaflets. Take care until next year…

Text of the Oxford Street leaflet:

LAPPLAND IS MELTING!

Today is the busiest shopping day of the year. Oxford Street is crammed with consumers all scrambling for the latest must-have item, the perfect present that will buy Christmas joy. Most of us find this part of Christmas incredibly stressful — there’s never enough time, tensions run high, and the obligation of gift exchange rules the season.

So why do we buy in to Christmas shopping madness? Maybe it’s time to start figuring out why we so desperately need a 5‑speed electric toothbrush in the first place, or why our children will be devastated if they don’t get the latest McNikeSoft Godzilla Action Figure that tops The List. It might well boil down to the fact that we are each exposed to 3,500 adverts per day. (No really, try counting!)

Corporate advertising can actually be seen as the largest single psychological project undertaken by the human race. We are told from the day we are born that increasing our material wealth will make us happier people, and if we want to show someone that we love them, we must buy them something – the more expensive, the more we love them.

Christmas consumption causes climate chaos!

The problem is, corporate consumer culture doesn’t just breed stress – it creates environmental catastrophe. If everyone in the world were to consume at the level we do in the West, we would need 5 extra planets. But it’s not just about disappearing rainforests and mountains of rubbish. Our excessive consumption is also causing climate chaos, with disastrous effects like hurricanes, flooding and other freak weather patterns.

We know that climate change is directly caused by the burning of fossil fuels (oil, coal and natural gas) to power our offices, heat our homes, and fuel our cars & planes. But tackling climate change is not only about taking the bus and switching off lights. Every product that is produced, transported, bought, used and thrown away eats up energy that we don’t have, and creates pollution that our climate can’t handle. And if that product is made of plastic (and think how many are), then it’s literally made of oil.

Us Santas aren’t suggesting you don’t give your loved ones presents this year. But why not make one or two of them, trade with friends, or buy locally. Think about the products you’re buying – what they’re made of, where they came from, how they got from there to here…and whether they’re actually going to make someone any happier.

Text of NHM leaflet:

WHAT LIES BENEATH SHELL’S WILD LIE?

Hello and Merry Christmas. We are Santas Against Excessive Consumption, and we’ve dropped into the Natural History Museum on our way to Oxford Street, to sing a few carols and to remind museum-goers that excessive consumption of oil is causing Lappland – our home! — to melt.

Why is this relevant to the NHM? Because Shell, the world’s third largest oil company, is also the new sponsor of the its Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition.

Could you join the campaign opposing this sponsorship, write to the Museum or lend images to our ‘Shell’s Wild Lie’ counter-exhibition?

Despite attempts to ‘greenwash’ its reputation via blanket advertising and cultural sponsorship, Shell is still heavily implicated in producing ever-greater quantities of the oil and gas that are destabilising our climate to such an alarming degree. Climate change is set to wipe out millions of plant and animal species and to devastate the poorest regions of the planet. Shell’s activities also result in oil spills which are major causes of death and destruction for many varieties of life. Its planned refinery and pipeline project in Country Mayo, Ireland, threatens a pristine ecosysystem, not to mention the homes and livelihoods of the inhabitants. Lastly, Shell is currently constructing a massive development at Sakhalin Island in Russia which is threatening the survival of the Western Pacific Grey Whale. For all these reasons, Shell should not be sponsoring the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. We call on the Natural History Museum to end its sponsorship deal with Shell.

Tell NHM boss Michael Dixon directly what you think of Shell (not to mention BP, which is a Museum partner):

Shell education in Barnsley

On Saturday 16th December potential customers at a Shell petrol station in Barnsley were given information about the activities of Shell in Mayo and encouraged to boycott the company.

Barnsley Shell protest 1Barnsley Shell protest 2On Saturday 16th December potential customers at a Shell petrol station in Barnsley were given information about the activities of Shell in Mayo and encouraged to boycott the company.

A group from Rhythms of Resistance North moved in on the petrol station mid-afternoon. The entrance and exit were blocked, banners hung and leaflets given to motorists and pedestrians with information about the Mayo pipeline. Many people received the information sympathetically. One motorist returned from the nearest alternative source of petrol, two miles away, so people could be diverted to it.

Several car drivers however were very confrontational, driving into sambistas and in one case forcing a player on to their car bonnet before braking to cause her to fall off.
The first police to arrive read out various threats, which couldn’t be heard above the drum beats. Eventually reinforcements arrived, adding to the chaos with a number of vehicles of their own. For a while they held up the traffic so their photographers could get a better view.

When it came to the point of inevitable arrest for continuing the blockade the sambistas decided it would be more productive to move to the pavement and continue drawing people’s attention so they could be given more information. A fair proportion of car drivers chose not to enter the station even when the entrance was unblocked.

The Camp for Climate Action was just the beginning! — next meeting January 13/14th, Leeds

Come and take the next steps forward and be part of a newly energised movement in the fight to avoid catastrophic climate change.

Drax at sunsetCome and take the next steps forward and be part of a newly energised movement in the fight to avoid catastrophic climate change.

In August of this year hundreds gathered near Selby to confront the UK’s biggest CO2 emitter: Drax Coal Power Station. The Camp for Climate Action was an inspiring 10 days of learning, sustainable living and direct action to challenge the causes of climate chaos.

There is already much enthusiasm for organising another Camp, come and get involved on 13th/14th January at ‘The Common Place’ in Leeds (see www.thecommonplace.org.uk for directions). Meetings will run Saturday 11am-5pm and Sunday 10am-6pm.

This project is still at its early stages and details such as when, where and how to organise the next Camp are to be decided at this meeting. Food and crash pad accommodation will be provided. Everyone will be asked for a donation of around £10 to cover costs. If you have particular access or childcare needs, or if would like more information contact leeds@climatecamp.org.uk.

Please spread the news far and wide. You can download a rather nice poster here: http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/resources.htm

Some of the neighbourhoods from last year’s camp are meeting in the meantime to generate ideas for the next camp and organise locally.
