Ten tonnes of waste per week is gen­er­at­ed by the free news­pa­pers in West­min­ster alone, which is not a prob­lem that can be solved just by recy­cling. The only solu­tion to the prob­lem is to remove it — stop print­ing the papers.

In an attempt to get this mes­sage out, a group of intre­pid paper boys and girls decid­ed to use the tac­tics of The Lon­don Paper and Lon­don Lite, putting their own pro-recy­cling anti-waste pro­pa­gan­da into copies of the papers then aggres­sive­ly and relent­less­ly forc­ing them on the pub­lic.

At approx­i­mate­ly 5pm sharp, paper dis­tri­b­u­tion began. The Lon­don Paper and Lon­don Lite teams com­pet­ed for the atten­tion of com­muters, point­ing out the numer­ous dif­fer­ences between the papers and the qual­i­ty of their con­tents. The teams, while obvi­ous­ly agree­ing that they were both giv­ing away high­ly sophis­ti­cat­ed and intel­lec­tu­al­ly stim­u­lat­ing pub­li­ca­tions, did­n’t agree on which one was in fact supe­ri­or. Sar­casm aside, this is anoth­er issue with the free news­pa­pers — that they are filled with sec­ond rate celebri­ty gos­sip, inane half-sto­ries, and above all, adver­tis­ing. Real­ly, do these news­pa­pers con­tain any actu­al news? Is what they have to say so impor­tant that it’s worth 10 tonnes of waste paper a week?

As the com­pe­ti­tion grew more intense, war paint was smeared and the bat­tle began. Papers were giv­en and replaced and giv­en again, with dis­trib­u­tors from each team com­pet­ing over indi­vid­ual mem­bers of the pub­lic, lead­ing to vio­lent con­fronta­tions with each oth­er. The offi­cial employ­ees of both free papers seemed baf­fled but amused, tak­ing pho­tographs of the event. How­ev­er, an employ­ee of The Evening Stan­dard, dri­ving up in his van, seemed to be less than impressed, attempt­ing to take away some of the papers and gen­er­al­ly behav­ing in a rather ungentle­man­ly fash­ion.

Then, as two oppos­ing team mem­bers were locked in com­bat, a police­man on a horse appeared and polite­ly and calm­ly request­ed that all the stu­dents just stop that and come and speak to him right now. As only a cou­ple of the group were stu­dents, the action most­ly con­tin­ued until he got a bit upset. When all the paper boys and girls were gath­ered around the horse, they were told “You just can’t do that!” “Stop it!” “I’ll arrest you!” “Just stop it!” and “Calm down!”.

After agree­ing that it was indeed rude to force news­pa­pers on unsus­pect­ing pedes­tri­ans, but that they would calm down, the paper dis­trib­ut­ing con­tin­ued a lit­tle less vio­lent­ly. Passers-by were offered ‘The Lon­don Lit­ter’, ‘free rub­bish’, and ‘news’ (though unfor­tu­nate­ly there was no news avail­able), and were assured that they could throw it away when­ev­er and wher­ev­er they liked. In fact, the more they threw away the bet­ter. Some peo­ple seemed quite keen to get their free rub­bish, some were irri­tat­ed and a few were gen­uine­ly inter­est­ed in what was being said.

Sad­ly, some more police­men (who did­n’t have hors­es) turned up and told the paper girls and boys that real­ly it was time to stop it now. Mod­er­ate­ly aggres­sive at first, they were won over by the charm of the paper­ers, report­ed­ly even tak­ing some (100% recy­cled!) leaflets for their col­leagues. By this point all the news­pa­pers had gone and it was at least half past beer o’clock, so after a lit­tle chat with the police (and pick­ing up any lit­ter that may have been left), it was declared a vic­to­ry and they head­ed off.

We’ll be kick­ing off ear­ly on Sat­ur­day morn­ing (9am break­fast) — start­ing with all shar­ing the most impor­tant rea­sons why we’ve come to Not­ting­ham, we’ll get on with some prac­ti­cal dis­cus­sions around the EF! Action Update, the web­site, and the sum­mer gath­er­ing.
From what we’ve all said, we’ll be able in the after­noon to move on to ‘where next?’, plus shar­ing cam­paigns we’re involved with & see­ing what they need, and get­ting togeth­er local­ly and region­al­ly with oth­er folk who are there.

On Sun­day we’ll move into groups to con­crete­ly take the ideas for­wards from the Sat­ur­day, from the cam­paigns we’re already work­ing on and what we want to do togeth­er. We’ll fin­ish at 4pm, after hav­ing shared what we’ve come up with. Hoorah.

March of the penguins: Plane Stupid reclaim the ice

10.30am — Around 30 pen­guins today ‘reclaimed the ice’ at the Nat­ur­al His­to­ry Muse­um’s ice rink in protest at British Air­ways spon­sor­ship of the muse­um’s annu­al win­ter fes­tiv­i­ties.

10.30am — Around 30 pen­guins today ‘reclaimed the ice’ at the Nat­ur­al His­to­ry Muse­um’s ice rink in protest at British Air­ways spon­sor­ship of the muse­um’s annu­al win­ter fes­tiv­i­ties.

The pro­tes­tors, from the cli­mate action group Plane Stu­pid, dressed as pen­guins to high­light the irony of an air­line cre­at­ing an ice rink in cen­tral Lon­don, whilst its busi­ness activ­i­ties are a major cause of glob­al warm­ing, which is melt­ing the polar ice caps and caus­ing dan­ger­ous cli­mate change. The loss of the polar ice will imper­il wildlife such as pen­guins and polar bears and is believed to be a major ‘tip­ping point’ which will speed up cli­mate change.

A spoke­spen­guin called Tam­sin said: “We’ve come to remind peo­ple that we love ice too, but the ice in our own home is melt­ing as a result of glob­al warm­ing. BA has shown no con­cern for the issue of cli­mate change. It is a major lob­by­ist for the expan­sion of Britain’s air­ports — par­tic­u­lar­ly the third run­way at Heathrow — which will lead to a huge rise in green­house gas emis­sions at a time when emis­sions from oth­er sec­tors are being cut back. It is shame­ful that an insti­tu­tion like the Nat­ur­al His­to­ry Muse­um should allow British Air­ways to trade on its eco-friend­ly rep­u­ta­tion by spon­sor­ing this ice rink. BA are push­ing for air­port expan­sion which will guar­an­tee we can­not stop cat­a­stroph­ic cli­mate change.”

She added, “British Air­ways’ mon­ey is dirty, and we hope that next year the muse­um will find a more appro­pri­ate spon­sor for their ice rink.”

The pen­guins, car­ry­ing ban­ners and plac­ards read­ing, ‘BA Fly, Pen­guins Die’, and ‘Freeze Flights’ skat­ed and hand­ed out leaflets for around 20 min­utes before being forcibly removed from the ice by British Air­ways secu­ri­ty staff. There were no arrests.

3) BRISTOL RISING TIDE TAKES ACTION VS. SHELL GREENWASH — DECEMBER 2007
A series of actions is being tak­en against the organ­is­ers of the Wildlife Pho­tog­ra­ph­er of the Year Award and Bris­tol Muse­um, in protest at the spon­sor­ship of the event by Shell. A grumpy polar bear vis­it­ed the offices of BBC Wildlife mag­a­zine, then activists dis­rupt­ed Bris­tol Muse­um’s posh recep­tion to kick off the exhi­bi­tion with a Yes Men-style inter­ven­tion. And on the open­ing morn­ing, dozens of humans, polar bears, a snow leop­ard and a tiger gath­ered (com­plete with the Shell’s Wild Lie counter-exhi­bi­tion) in front of the muse­um. They hand­ed out leaflets and cre­at­ed quite a spec­ta­cle. Protests are expect­ed to con­tin­ue through Jan. 13th.

4) SHELL TO SEA SCALE GOVERNMENT OFFICE — IRELAND, 19.12.07
A spe­cial prayer and car­ol ser­vice was held on 16th Decem­ber at Bel­lan­aboy, Coun­ty Mayo, mark­ing the end of anoth­er year of com­mu­ni­ty strug­gle against Shel­l’s pro­posed raw gas pipeline and inland refin­ery.
On the 19th, a small group of Shell to Sea activists scaled the heights of the Depart­ment of Nat­ur­al Resources to place a ban­ner read­ing PROTECT IRISH NATURAL RESOURCES on the bal­cony out­side Eamon Ryan’s office.

7) FLIGHT CENTRES SHUT FOR BUSINESS — MANCHESTER, 7.12.07
All Flight Cen­tre branch­es in Man­ches­ter city cen­tre were super-glued shut in time for Sat­ur­day trad­ing and to coin­cide with the cli­mate march in Lon­don. They were past­ed with notices say­ing: “Closed — we want your kids to have a plan­et” The UK’s only Hum­mer deal­er­ship, Bauer Mil­lett, was also D‑locked shut.

More than thir­ty cli­mate activists, includ­ing mem­bers of the Ris­ing Tide net­work, joined with local res­i­dents from Merthyr Tyd­fil in stop­ping exca­va­tion work for a full day on Britain’s biggest ever open-cast coal mine at Ffos-y-fran in South Wales. Activists evad­ed police and secu­ri­ty before tak­ing over the 1,000 acre site on a hill­top near Cardiff. Dressed as clowns and polar bears, they chained them­selves to bull­doz­ers and oth­er heavy machin­ery to pre­vent work on the mine.

Four home­less polar bears appeared before Bris­tol Mag­is­trates Court on 14th Novem­ber. They were arrest­ed after blockad­ing the Roy­al Bank of Scot­land cor­po­rate offices on Avon St. dur­ing the Ris­ing Tide nation­al day of action. After plead­ing guilty to charges of “wil­ful­ly obstruct­ing the pub­lic high­way with a non motor vehi­cle” (i.e. a suit case) they were giv­en a con­di­tion­al dis­charge and went on to pick­et the RBS branch on Bald­win Street!

shell secu­ri­ty got into quite a tizz over the four pro­tes­tors and rather too many police arrived. the police (once the gov­ern­ment secu­ri­ty zone map was shown to them) “facil­i­tat­ed law­ful protest” as long as it did­n’t go too near the poi­so­nous shell build­ing. this may have been for the safe­ty of the pub­lic or for oth­er rea­sons.

The pro­test­ers hand­ed out lots of leaflets and urged patrons to demand the end of Oil Com­pa­nies spon­sor­ship of Art Gal­leries.

The ‘corpses’ were dressed in t‑shirts dis­pa­ly­ing the logos such as ‘art not oil’, ‘bp — fos­sil fools’ and ‘bp out of the tate’. Their epi­taphs was fit­ting for the loca­tion. Once dead the staff on site took the pre­cau­tion of shout­ing to every­body to leave which only attract­ed more peo­ple, and over 200 fly­ers were giv­en out inside the build­ing.

Sev­er­al mem­bers of the pub­lic were very sup­port­ive and even told the staff to stop try­ing to move us ; “these peo­ple are mak­ing more of a state­ment than most of the art in this room” was some­thing i heard being said.

After ask­ing the TATE for a rep­re­sen­ta­tive to dis­cuss the pol­i­cy of accept­ing mon­ey from social crim­i­nals, but they refused as all direc­tors were ‘still on hol­i­day’. A shame.…and i bet they flew too!

All in all, a good day with excel­lent pub­lic response.

All week, con­cerned indi­vid­u­als from around Bris­tol have been expos­ing the truth about Shell and the pub­lic insti­tu­tions who are help­ing to green­wash them.

It hasn’t been an easy week for the organ­is­ers of the Wildlife Pho­tog­ra­ph­er of the Year Award and the Bris­tol Muse­um, or their spon­sor and proud wildlife destroy­er— sug­ar­dad­dy Shell Oil Com­pa­ny. All week, con­cerned indi­vid­u­als from around Bris­tol have been expos­ing the truth about Shell and the pub­lic insti­tu­tions who are help­ing to green­wash them.

On Tues­day, activists staged a protest in the nation­al offices of the BBC Wildlife Mag­a­zine in Broad­mead, bring­ing work to a halt and reviv­ing con­tro­ver­sy with­in the orga­ni­za­tion about their rela­tion­ship with the oil indus­try. On Fri­day evening, Bris­tol Muse­um host­ed a pri­vate, posh wine and cheese recep­tion to kick off their host­ing of Shell’s exhib­it, with atten­dees includ­ing Dawn Pri­maro­la, Labour MP from South Bris­tol and Helen Hol­land, leader of the Bris­tol City Coun­cil, who were all pat­ting them­selves on the back for car­ing about wildlife. Bris­tol Ris­ing Tide activists, dressed up to the nines, were admit­ted to the event under fake names, with one activist gain­ing access to the mic, and pos­ing as the Shell pub­lic rela­tions direc­tor. He then launched into a two minute speech (in the style of the yes men) thank­ing the city coun­cil and muse­um for help­ing to allow Shell’s destruc­tion of wildlife to con­tin­ue and call­ing the melt­ing of the Arc­tic ice cap a “tremen­dous busi­ness oppor­tu­ni­ty” by allow­ing access to mil­lions of bar­rels of oil under the ice cap. Amaz­ing­ly the mic was kept on through the entire­ty of the speech. (Full text of speech and video below)

Sat­ur­day saw a high­ly suc­cess­ful and well-attend­ed protest, mark­ing the open­ing of the SHELL spon­sored Wildlife pho­tog­ra­ph­er of the year exhi­bi­tion. Dozens of humans, about a dozen polar bears, a snow leop­ard, and a tiger gath­ered, com­plete with the Wild Lie counter-exhib­it. Pro­test­ers gath­ered in front of the muse­um, hand­ed out leaflets, cre­at­ing quite a spec­ta­cle. Some even­tu­al­ly made their way into the exhi­bi­tion hall, where Shell’s crimes were recount­ed, and a die-in took place to sym­bol­ize all the wildlife who have been killed because of oil greed, and who con­tin­ue to suf­fer the effects of cli­mate change. The protest, orga­nized by Bris­tol Ris­ing Tide, Friends of the Earth, and Peo­ple and Plan­et, showed that Bris­to­lians will not be qui­et in the face of cor­po­rate green­wash in our pub­lic insti­tu­tions.

Protests are expect­ed to con­tin­ue at the muse­um through Jan. 13, in an effort to edu­cate the pub­lic about the true nature of Shell’s activ­i­ties, and to main­tain pres­sure on the BBC Wildlife Mag­a­zine and Nat­ur­al His­to­ry Muse­um to drop Shell as a spon­sor. Peo­ple are encour­aged to go and see the pho­tographs and let the muse­um know about their dis­plea­sure about allow­ing a Shell spon­sored exhib­it space in a city-owned muse­um.

The protest today also coin­cid­ed with a shock­ing report in this week­end’s Finan­cial Times. It high­lights Shel­l’s role in the immi­nent dev­as­ta­tion of the athabas­ca tar sands.

Good evening my name is Derek Leavus­sum, pub­lic rela­tions direc­tor for Shell. I want to wel­come you all to the 2007 Shell Wildlife Pho­tog­ra­ph­er of the Year Award. As you can imag­ine- I don’t have an easy job, what with all this fuss about melt­ing glac­i­ers, extreme weath­er and wildlife extinc­tions. I’d like to thank the Bris­tol City Coun­cil, BBC Wildlife Mag­a­zine and the Nat­ur­al His­to­ry Muse­um for mak­ing my job all that much eas­i­er by allow­ing us to spon­sor your wild lie- I mean wildlife- exhi­bi­tion.

We pre­fer not to see the melt­ing of the Arc­tic ice cap as a threat to human civ­i­liza­tion. We see it as a busi­ness oppor­tu­ni­ty. After all, there are mil­lions of bar­rels of oil under there just wait­ing to be extract­ed. And we’ll need all the ener­gy we can get since we’ve just aban­doned our solar pro­gram. When you see the Shell logo, we don’t want you to think about the whale habi­tat we’re destroy­ing in Siberia and Ire­land, human rights vio­la­tions in Nige­ria, and espe­cial­ly not cli­mate change. This may all be true but the fact is that the world needs oil and this is sim­ply the price of progress.

Some say it’s iron­ic that the world’s sec­ond largest oil com­pa­ny is spon­sor­ing a wildlife pho­tog­ra­phy exhi­bi­tion- but Shell is tru­ly com­mit­ted to preser­va­tion of the polar bear and oth­er wildlife- in pho­tographs if not in the real world. Some say it’s the end of the oil age- but we say it’s just the begin­ning- we’re thrilled about dig­ging into Canada’s oil sands and with your help we can con­tin­ue to deceive the pub­lic into think­ing we’re a respon­si­ble cor­po­rate cit­i­zen. Thank you all for com­ing tonight and we hope you enjoy view­ing these amaz­ing pho­tographs of wildlife that Shell is destroy­ing- I mean con­serv­ing.

Today, on one of the busiest shop­ping days of the year, activists from Nor­wich Ris­ing Tide dressed up as San­tas and vis­it­ed Chapelfield Mall to sing a dif­fer­ent tune to the usu­al buy, buy, buy mad­ness of the hol­i­day sea­son.

Today, on one of the busiest shop­ping days of the year, activists from Nor­wich Ris­ing Tide dressed up as San­tas and vis­it­ed Chapelfield Mall to sing a dif­fer­ent tune to the usu­al buy, buy, buy mad­ness of the hol­i­day sea­son.

Bear­ing a fes­tive ban­ner read­ing Lap­land is Melt­ing and singing sub­vert­ed Christ­mas car­ols (Wel­come to Con­sumer Won­der­land, Oh Lit­tle Town of Chapelfield, etc.), the San­tas set up out­side the tem­ple to con­sump­tion that is Chapelfield Mall.

Many stressed-out shop­pers broke into smiles of recog­ni­tion as the lyrics reached their ears: ‘Hit the malls with wads of mon­ey fa la la la / Breath­ing air that’s stale and ster­ile fa la la la’ or ‘To some folks Christ­mas means a time for gath­er­ing with friends / But TV says it’s time for pricey gifts and self­ish ends’. Mall secu­ri­ty how­ev­er were not so pleased with the ‘please don’t shop here’ tunes, and the San­tas were moved on – but not before send­ing a streak of san­i­ty through con­sumer won­der­land.

The San­tas’ car­ols also high­light­ed the fact that binge con­sump­tion at Christ­mas-time is direct­ly linked to cli­mate change (‘This shop­ping toil is wast­ing oil’). Hol­i­day food, trav­el, lights, and gifts pro­duce on aver­age 650 kg of CO2 emis­sions per indi­vid­ual. In total, that’s 5.5% of the year­ly car­bon foot­print of the UK.

‘Every gift that’s pro­duced, trans­port­ed, bought, used, and thrown away uses up ener­gy that we don’t have, and cre­ates emis­sions that our cli­mate can’t han­dle. And if that prod­uct is made of plas­tic (like all those cheap toys that will be bro­ken or dis­card­ed in a week’s time), then it’s lit­er­al­ly made of oil’, said one San­ta from Nor­wich Ris­ing Tide.

Said anoth­er: ‘Us San­tas aren’t sug­gest­ing you don’t give your loved ones presents this year. But why not make one or two of them, trade with friends, or buy local­ly. Think about the prod­ucts you’re buy­ing – what they’re made of, where they came from, how they got from there to here… and whether they’re actu­al­ly going to make some­one any hap­pi­er.’

Today, on the last big shop­ping week­end of the year, LRT went to Oxford street to sing alter­na­tive car­ols for all the love­ly boys and girls who were busy rac­ing around in a rush to spend.

Dressed as San­tas and Elves, we brought not only cheer, but some hope too, as we got loads of pos­i­tive feed­back. The San­tas sang for about two hours.
