Week 2…

Since arriving on the 6th June, we have cleared the site of most of the rubbish, put our tents up, built a compost toilet and a kitchen, and have built a half roundhouse as a communal structure!

We have opened the gates to the local community and so far we have had full support from the neighbours and those in the nearby communities, as well as the local businesses and some unofficial support from certain local councillors. So far we have received a load of donations, including plants, wood, tents and building materials, but we are always in need of more things. Please check our wish list in the discussion page of our facebook group!

Our gates are open everyday as we are essentially a community garden. We encourage everyone from the local area to pay us a visit and share their ideas about what we should do with the land, as well as getting them to help us plant our vegetables and also just to chill out and get to know us all.

We will hold a public meeting every Thursday night at 7pm on site, and we shall try to make every Saturday an event filled open day.

Needless to say, we still welcome everybody from all over London and the world. We have had quite a few international visitors lately! Everyone is welcome to come and stay as long as they follow site rules which include no drugs and alcohol, as well as being considerate to others and you must actively participate as a member of the community.

We especially welcome anyone with any skills or knowledge which may be useful or interesting. We encourage people to hold workshops to share their skills, whether it is about common law, herbal remedies, yoga, or even how to make didgeridoos or repair bicycles! Or even if you know nothing but just want to learn, come along too!

We are in the process of setting up a proper website where we can publish our wish list, pod casts, and an event diary for all the workshops we will be holding.

Until then, please follow us on twitter! http://twitter.com/KewEcoVillage

Please come and visit us! We are open between 11 am and 8 pm, and are located at 2 Kew Bridge Rd, Brentford. Our nearest station is ‘Kew Bridge’ and the nearest tube is ‘Gunnersbury’.

Mainshill Solidarity Camp Update: No eviction this morning, but drilling workers

22.06.2009
After a whole night of digging in and strengthening defences, the rumoured eviction this morning hasn’t happened. However, the solidarity shown by the number of people who joined us over the weekend has been fantastic and allowed huge amounts of building work to happen, making the site well defendable.

After a whole night of digging in and strengthening defences, the rumoured eviction this morning hasn’t happened. However, the solidarity shown by the number of people who joined us over the weekend has been fantastic and allowed huge amounts of building work to happen, making the site well defendable.

Instead of police or court bailifs, a van-load of Apex workers tried to gain access to the site to continue bore-hole work on the site, vital to the coal mining operation. Bore-holing and clear-felling had been happening before the site was occupied, and since the occupation no work has been carried out. It is thought that this work is illegal as Scottish Coal have to carry out an extensive wildlife survey before felling any trees or starting work as a condition imposed by the council.

Access to the site and Apex machinery was blocked with a vehicle, and Apex workers responded by threatening to smash the windscreen if it was not removed from in front of the gate. Very quickly, the people inside the vehicle were joined by campers and car loads of locals who came out in support and to avert an eviction. The Apex workers backed down after this show of strength!

In a plea of solidarity to contract workers carrying out the bore-hole drilling and clear-felling, they have been asked to side with the community and camp against their bosses and refuse to carry out work on the site.

The Chief Inspector for the area has stated that the police have no intention of removing the camp at present, but will let us know if that changes. It is thought that a court order is being sought to evict the camp.

Lord Home, the land owner, Scottish Coal, the mining company, and Scottish Ministers can stop this project – if they were to come down and see the level of support and involvement in the camp from the local community they would see how strong the opposition is to this mine. If they don’t decide to overturn the decision, they will have a very expensive eviction on their hands.

Your solidarity is still needed! We can stop this coal mine from going ahead, both by defending the site and working with the local communities to take back decision-making power and get permission overturned. Please join us as soon as you can – see the website for details.

Hands Off Lewisham Bridge — Eviction Alert — Call for support

An eviction notice has been served on the occupation at Lewisham Bridge.

Bailiffs are arriving at 10.30 on Wednesday morning.

An eviction notice has been served on the occupation at Lewisham Bridge.

Bailiffs are arriving at 10.30 on Wednesday morning.

Hands Off Lewisham Bridge are asking for your support in resisting the eviction. We need as many people as possible to stay overnight on Tuesday. If you can’t stay overnight then please come down as early as possible on Wednesday morning to support the occupation.

We want to let Lewisham Council know that they are evicting people who have been peacefully protesting over the destruction of community education at our school.

Lewisham Council still don’t have planning permission for their new school. Lewisham Council still haven’t told us why the decant had to take place at Easter, when children were taking SATs and banding tests. Lewisham Council still haven’t told us why they are prepared to wash their hands of the responsibility of educating our children.

If Lewisham Bridge Primary School is given to Leathersellers we parents will have no say in the governance of our school. Staff will be employed by Leathersellers who will set their own terms and conditions taking those teachers out of a collective national teaching body.

This is privatisation! This is bringing the market into our kids’ education, where the only motivation is profit and the only measure is league table.

Trusts and academies will compete for those children they believe to be desirable and leave those whom they don’t on the scrapheap. Why have Prendergast rejected the Travellers Education Service that used to be based at the school? Why have Prendergast rejected the proposal to establish a SEN (Special Educational Needs) unit at the new school?

A consultation process has already started for a trust led by Goldsmiths University which will govern 3 schools: Addey & Stanhope, Deptford Green and Crossways. It is a process that has exactly the same goal. To take our schools out of the public sector and hand them over to the private sector.

We cannot let them get away with this. We can fight this together and we can win!

Come down to Lewisham Bridge Primary School and let the bailiffs know that we’re not going easily.

“Nick Griffin: if you’re reading this, we’re in your house”

Pulling A Fash One: Bath 3, BNP 0

The BNP went three goals down on Friday the 22nd May in the continuing grudge match between themselves and the people of Bath. This time the venue was the prestigious BRLSi, on Queen Square. Nearly 100 people from a variety of backgrounds (including antifa, anarchists, greens, IWW, socialists and a good number of pissed off Bathonians) responded to a call out from Bath Activist Network to protest a hustings meeting featuring the fascist BNP.

The demo was a huge success, seeing the front doors blockaded for nearly two hours, preventing the meeting from going ahead. The majority of speakers due to represent their parties pulled out of the meeting and opted to speak on the street instead, many making the decision to do so on the night. A tiny mob of eight fascists, most from out of town, turned up and made a pitiful attempt to force their way in before giving up and spending the rest of the night moaning to the police (one of whom had an anti-BNP leaflet mysteriously taped to his back). Bristol-based BNP member Clive Courtney was arrested after shoving a local man to the ground.

The blockade ended when the 50 police who were eventually drafted in demanded that the demo move out of the public view — protesters unanimously refused, and the picket was violently broken up, allowing the fascists entry to a deserted building, as the real democracy was in full swing on the streets! While addressing the empty room, BNP Chippenham MEP candidate Jeremy Wotherspoon denied being racist, said he recently ‘shook hands with a negro’ (his words, not ours).

In an interesting side note, members of the public let protesters know that the police were describing them as ‘scum’ and activists have some interesting video footage of angry, rotund Bristol BNP high-up Mark Warren-Clutterbuck having a private chat and a laugh with senior police. The BNP requested that once the blockade was ended, they should be allowed to move in en masse — a request that the police were all too willing to facilitate. The back-patting and obvious mutual support between the cops and Nazis was sickening, but on the night the facts spoke for themselves — public support was overwhelmingly in favour of the blockade, and the ‘no platform for fascists’ position.

The BNP still features hatemonger activists convicted of bombings, murder and assault, internally calls for a reduction in democratic decision-making in the party, and only permits white ethnic, ‘indigenous’ Brits to join as full members. It is impossible for the BNP to publicly advertise, or hold a meeting without protection from the police and a huge and angry reaction from the vast majority of the public. Well done to everyone who turned up and showed once again that the BNP are not welcome in civilised society, let alone Bath. It’s just a shame that the BRLSi organizers toothlessly felt obliged to provide the BNP the credibility they so crave by inviting them; hopefully, there won’t be a next time. And if you do have any info on BNP activity in your area, email either bathactivistnet [at] yahoo.co.uk, or phone 08451 265011.

Eco Battle For Bathampton: Round 2

News has reached us that B&NES Council has made the public-friendly decision of approving the massively unpopular drain on financial and environmental resources that is the park and ride at Bathampton Meadows. The park and ride, part of a ludicrously expensive, environmentally/socially destructive and massively flawed transport package, is to be built on the ancient meadowlands which are part of the Cotswolds AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and contain two ancient monuments. The location is poorly-chosen and the council themselves have conceded that the traffic easing effects of the park and ride will be ‘minimal’.

Maybe the council have forgotten the headache that was caused last time the authorities tried to bulldoze the natural habitats surrounding Bathampton. In 1994, a large tree camp was set up to oppose the Bathampton A36/A46 link road, costing the authorities thousands in security costs and putting the project way behind schedule. The same looks set to happen again, with local activists honing their eco-defence skills. Rest assured that if the bulldozers roll in, so will scores of angry locals and activists determined to fight for the meadow inch by inch. The council’s disregard for the environment looks set to ignite a battle that will be giving them serious headaches for years to come. You can still write letters of objection to the scheme, and a template letter can be found at http://www.savebathamptonmeadows.org.uk, and, short notice, push a ‘call in’ for a public enquiry by the 23rd of this month.

Stop the press: at a recent public meeting, we have just heard that the Government Office for the South West have just initiated an ‘Article 14’, a modest-sounding bit of jargon that indicates that they now require more time to consider the scheme – so nothing’s set in concrete yet.

Exclusive: Dirty Don’s Dodgy Expenses

With the ample evidence pouring out of the cash trough that is Westminster to attest to the corrupt nature of the vast majority of our MPs, it may come as no surprise to many of you that our own ‘Dodgy’ Don Foster MP is also apparently on the take. Our favourite everyman has been claiming a staggering £380 per week allowance for his second home (£230 above the national average, and working out to a huge £19,760 per year). In addition to this, Mr Foster’s ‘miscellaneous’ claims per year total over £5,000 and have risen by 60% since 2001. Obviously as Don gets more and more used to rubbing shoulders with the shower of cheats and liars that pass themselves off as our leaders, he gets more and more comfortable with helping himself to a plush life using our cash. But, on a salary of a mere £65,000 a year, can we blame poor Don for claiming an additional total of £92,000, including expenses, secretarial services and ‘miscellaneous’ expenses in 2007?

As if this weren’t enough, Don makes a nice little earner for his political career by accepting huge wedges of cash; £99,015.09 in 2007 alone to be exact, from a shady character with his roots in white collar crime. The super rich and super crooked Paul Strasburger is a local millionaire, owner of no less than three local estate agents and by far the largest bankroller of the local Lib Dems. While hugely distasteful, being a millionaire and a land shark is not technically a crime. What IS straying towards the illegal however is Strasburger’s dealings with a certain Michael Brown, another bankroller of the Lib Dems. While on the run for theft and money laundering (Brown is now hiding out in the Caribbean) police took an interest in searching the home of Strasburger who had put his house forward as Brown’s bail address. This is just another example of big business scratching the back of politicians – the old boys’ club in action – and adds to the image we are seeing more and more of the rich and political classes sneering at us while they rob for the poor and keep for themselves. Yet still, we can’t hold Don and his Dodgy big business pals solely responsible; after all, when in Rome…

…And The BNP Are At It, Too!

Wonk-eyed Nazi Nick Griffin has gone to great lengths to distance his party from their white supremacist, fascist image, dressing the party up as an alternative to corrupt mainstream politicians. But while the party has temporarily un-stiffened their arms, and tries not to be openly racist (an attempt foiled by even the lightest scrutiny), a brief look over their expenses claims show them to be just as bad as the rest. In Barking and Dagenham, seven BNP councillors attended only 27% of meetings while still pocketing their full £9,801 allowance. A BNP councillor in Sandwell attended none of the meetings at which he was expected and took the full allowance while the party’s 2007 accounts failed their audit as several grand of expenditure was not properly recorded. They have also been in trouble recently after being caught claiming some paid-up party members were self employed to avoid paying income tax and NI contributions. So, as well as being obviously racist (Nick Griffin recently expressed a hope of igniting a racial war while addressing a KKK rally in the USA, and has published books denying the Holocaust), violent and generally repressive and obnoxious, it turns out that the BNP are just as corrupt as the rest of them, and have been joining all the other parties in wallowing in unearned piles of our cash. Bastards, the lot of ‘em!

Nobody Wins Euro Elections

The recent European elections were a resounding defeat for mainstream political parties – and another example of how undemocratic the European Parliament actually is. Labour suffered their biggest setback since the birth of Tony Blair, UKIP struggled to keep the votes they already had, whilst leftist mainstream parties such as the Greens made significant gains. However, the real winner was Nobody. Europe-wide, an incredible 57% voted for Nobody – 65% in the UK – an astonishing mandate for social change on a scale unseen since the inception of the Liberal party in the 1870s.

Unfortunately, and to the disgust of a disillusioned electorate across the continent, the EU REFUSED to acknowledge these votes, and declared that all the seats fairly won by Nobody would be REDISTRIBUTED amongst the other parties. And so we have a situation where parties such as the BNP, who took LESS votes in this election than the last, have taken seats in the EU Parliament for the first time in history.

In France in 2007 the state’s refusal to recognize a 16% vote for Nobody led to rioting in most major cities. Earlier this year, the Icelandic government’s refusal to allow Nobody to take positions of power democratically theirs contributed to the popular overthrow of that government. With the anger currently brewing across Europe, can similar uprisings be far away?

Art With A Capital ‘F’

Those dastardly johnnies from B.A.D. (Bath Arts Dictatorship) have been up to their old tricks again. This lot make up the secretive little cabal of the Bath Festivals committee who hide themselves away in their suite of rooms atop the city’s Tourist Information Centre, busily massaging their fantasies and egos, laying down the law to you, the Bath public, on vot you vill and vill not enjoy, ja?

Their latest two fingers-up to public opinion came in the form of a pair of monstrous and ugly mashed-wire-coathanger ‘sculptures’ by Gloucester ‘artist’ Sophie Ryder, which were dumped in Abbey Square in early April. These metal horrors have no link whatsoever to Bath, other than as a shop window for Ms Ryder’s other output, currently on sale at extortionate prices in the city’s Victoria Art Gallery. Are we seeing yet another B&NES-sponsored example of stealing from the poor to give to the rich?

In arguably one of the best and most enjoyable displays of direct-action ad hoc public comment since the Bush shoe-throwing episode, both beasts were pulled (or pushed) over at Easter weekend. The only thing which marred this display of sound artistic judgment was their miraculous resurrection by crane soon afterwards. How much public dosh was wasted on hoisting them back on their plinths?

Was it just coincidence that Bugs Bunny and pal Bully from TV programme ‘Bullseye’ pitched up at the same time as the Bath Comedy Festival? As they formed a backdrop to the comedy stage itself, how could anybody take them seriously? So is there a bunch of cultural worthies, not a million miles from Kingston Buildings, extracting the urine?

Nobody Takes You Seriously Until You Have An Insane Arch-Nemesis

Bath Animal Action’s campaign against foie gras – overpriced liver from tortured ducks and geese, produced under such appalling conditions that only obscure EU trade laws allow its sale in the UK – remains defiant and committed in the face of one of the most reticent restaurateurs yet.

Upmarket tapas restaurant Minibar are still refusing to remove foie gras from their menu, despite bogus claims of ethical concerns, poor sales of the dish, and confessions to the Chronicle that they have a “terrible night” and lose money whenever protesters visit. The reason for this apparently suicidal devotion to cruel cuisine may be related to a small, balding and clearly unstable man claiming to co-own the restaurant. His combination of abuse, mockery and deliberately running down an activist with his expensive 4x4 has brightened up several dull nights already.

Despite an increasingly diverse and desperate array of responses – pushing an activist in the road, claiming to have proof that the food was ethically produced and then refusing to show it, the aforementioned vehicular assault, repeated and groundless threats of arrest from an openly one-sided police farce, and being bored to death for hours by an idiot who could barely hold an opinion for five minutes, let alone an argument – the campaigners have vowed to fight for a foie-gras free Bath!

Upping The Veg-Ante

Last month’s Bristol Vegan Fayre – an annual celebration of vegan food, health and animal-cruelty-free ethics – went shiningly on the 30th and 31st May at Bristol’s Harbourside. Open to people of all dietary decisions, the food and drink flowed freely, particularly the free samples of chocolate and delicious fake meats, and there were stunning displays of Sikh swordfighting, and a solid line-up of reggae and rock over both days. Also on offer were info stalls on nutrition, charities, animal rescue centres and campaigning groups – although unfortunately there were slightly fewer vendors and higher costs this year, and a more commercialised atmosphere than previously: with stalls reflecting the social issues connected to veganism being relegated to out-of-the-way spots in favour of companies intent on tapping into the burgeoning vegan market. Still, a somewhat more grassroots vegan fayre is planned for Bath in late Summer/early September, so keep your eyes peeled.

Coal protesters board cargo ship

22 June 2009
Campaigners from Greenpeace have boarded a ship delivering coal to the Kingsnorth power station in Kent.

The vessel was targeted as it sailed up the River Medway, with reports of people swimming in front of the ship to stop it docking.

Greenpeace about to board E.on coal ship22 June 2009
Campaigners from Greenpeace have boarded a ship delivering coal to the Kingsnorth power station in Kent.

The vessel was targeted as it sailed up the River Medway, with reports of people swimming in front of the ship to stop it docking.

The group, which is protesting against coal-fired power stations, climbed aboard from inflatable speedboats.

However, Kent Police said the vessel still managed to dock at Kingsnorth with some protesters still on board.

Three men and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal damage, while another woman has been held on suspicion of endangering an aircraft.

The ship was boarded at about 2250 BST on Sunday as it approached the power station near Hoo.

Action ‘unacceptable’

On Monday morning, several campaigners remained on board, surrounded by officers.

A Greenpeace spokesman said: “There are still five campaigners on the ship so the protest is continuing. They are going to try and hold their position for as long as they can to prevent the coal from being unloaded, but the ship is surrounded with police.”

Ch Supt Matthew said police were using all available resources to bring a safe conclusion to the incident.

He said: “There are no reports of any injuries at this time. Public safety is of paramount importance to the operation.”

A spokeswoman for E.ON, which owns Kingsnorth, said the campaigners’ action was unacceptable.

She said: “Obviously we remain respectful of people’s right to protest but it was a dangerous thing to do — boarding a ship in the middle of the night.

“So our point of view is that this is unacceptable.”

Earlier, campaigner Sarah Shoraka, 31, who climbed the ship’s foremast, said: “There are nine of us on the ship.

“We have split into three teams of three, with one team on foremast, another on the funnel and the third hanging off the side.

“We are using walkie-talkies to stay in contact with each other and have enough food and water to last several days.

“We will stay as long as we can to stop the coal being unloaded.”

A police statement said: “Kent Police received reports of Greenpeace protesters boarding and attempting to impede the berthing of a coal vessel at Kingsnorth power station in Kent.

“Protesters used ribs (rigid inflatable boats) and also entered the water in order to board and prevent the coal vessel from making port.

“They were unsuccessful in their attempts and the coal vessel has now docked.”

Kingsnorth has been at the centre of a climate change row after E.ON announced plans to build a bigger coal-fired power station to replace the existing facility.

If built it would be the first new coal powered plant in the UK for a quarter of a century.

An estimated 1,500 demonstrators attended a climate camp to protest against the plans last August.

14 Arrests Initiate Week of Action Against Mountaintop Removal

Fourteen people were arrested on June 18 in a protest meant to launch a week of action against mountaintop removal coal mining in West Virginia. Four people climbed a 150-foot dragline at a mine site near Twilight, WV, and unfurled a banner reading, “Stop Mountaintop Removal Mining”. Another 9 entered the mine site to unfurl another banner. Climbers remained atop the dragline for more than three hours before being arrested.

This action is the first time ever that a dragline, one of the largest machines on earth, has ever been shut down in a protest, and is an important escalation in the fight against mountaintop removal.

The week of action will culminate with a civil disobedience action featuring leading climate scientist Dr. James Hansen, actress Daryl Hannah, Rainforest Action Network Executive Direction Michael Brune and former Representative Ken Hechler.

The week of action was initiated only days after President Obama announced his plans to reform, rather than abolish, mountaintop removal coal mining. The Obama administration approved environmental permits for 42 of the 48 proposed new mountaintop removal mines it has considered so far.

Peru Mine Blockade Enters 10th Day

Attracting less attention in light of the full-fledged uprising that has consumed Peru’s Amazon region for 70 days, a mine blockade is ongoing in the country’s highlands. On June 10th, miners launched roadblocks at the Buenaventura mining company’s Orcopampa gold mine in Peru, in protest of poor labor conditions and the mine’s impact on local communities. The blockades are still halting work at the mine, and the workers have tentatively called for a strike for June 24th.

Mainshill Solidarity Camp solidifies as local support grows

In its first full day of resistance Mainshill Solidarity Camp, in the Douglas Valley in South Lanarkshire, has grown as the site is set up. Tree-houses and other structures in the woodland have been put in place to show Scottish Coal that they are serious about preventing the opencast site from going ahead. The site will be continuously occupied.

The site will be continuously occupied.

Scottish Coal have been given permission to mine 1.7 million tonnes of coal from Mainshill Wood in South Lanarkshire, a decision by South Lanarkshire Council that enraged local residents who have campaigned against this mine for many months. Ministers of the Scottish Government gave final approval to the site in April, deeming the proposed site at Mainshill in the Douglas Valley to be “environmentally acceptable.” This is despite the fact that there are 18 residential dwellings located within 500m of the proposed site boundary, contravening Scottish planning policy on open cast sites.

Local people have shown enthusiastic support from the start.‭ Many‬ culinary delights have already been donated and gratefully received.

People turned up throughout the day to show their support.‭ ‬One local resident exclaimed,‭ “‬We’re so glad you’re here‭!”

There will be a Tea Party and open day on Sunday‭ ‬28th June,‭ ‬from‭ ‬3pm.‭ ‬Families and others from the surrounding areas will be invited to partake in fun and games whilst learning about how a protest site is run and about what can be done to protect the local environment and prevent runaway climate change.

Banners visible from the road have been erected at the site,‭ ‬highlighting the fundamentally anti-democratic way in which the planning process has ridden roughshod over the wishes of the local communities.

Activist Marcus Anderson comments,‭ “‬Mainshill Solidarity Camp highlights how community resistance and direct action go hand in hand in securing a future for generations to come‭”‬.

The site will continue to grow as awareness increases of what is being done to the people and environment‭ ‬of Scotland, and what can be done by people themselves to stop catastrophic climate change.

Climate activists blockade Peruvian Embassy & companies list

Climate change activists have blocked the entrance to the Peruvian Embassy today in protest the country’s killing of indigenous people in the Amazon rainforest.

Peruvian Embassy protest19 June 2009
Climate change activists have blocked the entrance to the Peruvian Embassy today in protest the country’s killing of indigenous people in the Amazon rainforest.

Up to 100 people have been killed in recent clashes over attempts to extract oil, gas, minerals and timber from the forest where indigenous people have lived for centuries. On June 5, the government’s security forces attacked a peaceful blockade, leading to bloodshed on both sides with 30–100 estimated deaths, over 100 injuries and numerous disappearances.

Since the clashes, the Peruvian government has suspended some exploitation in the area, but it is unclear whether some companies will be allowed to continue.

Protesters from London Camp for Climate Action are demanding to deliver a letter of protest to Peruvian Ambassador Ricardo Luna. The calls for oil and gas companies in the Amazon to suspend their operations until the government agrees to peaceful negotiations with local representatives; for an independent and impartial inquiry into the violence; and for the lifting of all charges against Alberto Pizango (the President of Peru’s Amazon Indian organisation, AIDESEP)

Protester Sam Gardener said: “This protest is to show solidarity with the thousands of indigenous people that are risking, and sometimes losing, their lives to protect their homes in the Amazon.

“By destroying the Amazon rainforest to extract fossil fuels, we are accelerating catastrophic climate change. The Amazon removes vast amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. By cutting it down to remove yet more fossil fuels we are speeding towards a worldwide catastrophe.”

Peru indigenous blockades win repeal of land laws

18th June 2009: Peruvian Congress Votes 82 – 12 to Repeal Two Controversial Laws

Government Urged to Drop Criminal Charges Against Indigenous Leaders and Allow Independent Investigation into Violent Incidents in Bagua

18th June 2009: Peruvian Congress Votes 82 – 12 to Repeal Two Controversial Laws

Government Urged to Drop Criminal Charges Against Indigenous Leaders and Allow Independent Investigation into Violent Incidents in Bagua

Lima, Peru – The Peruvian Congress voted today 82 – 12 to repeal two of nine contested laws in an attempt to end widespread indigenous protests that have been paralyzing transportation and commerce in the Peruvian Amazon for 70 days. In a complete shift of discourse, President Garcia admitted that “there were a series errors and exaggerations” in the government’s handling of this conflict and asked Congress to repeal decrees 1090 and 1064, which were passed in 2008 as part of a package of new laws to facilitate the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States.

Having witnessed the vote in the Peruvian Congress, Daysi Zapata, acting President of AIDESEP, Peru’s national Amazonian indigenous organization welcomed the President’s comments and declared: “Today is a historic day. We are grateful that the will of the indigenous peoples has been heard and we only hope that in the future governments listen and attend to indigenous peoples, and not legislate behind their backs.”

Zapata said that AIDESEP it is calling on our base organizations and communities to end their blockades and protests while also calling on the government to enter into a good faith and transparent dialogue.

Primer Minister Simon, who has been a lead negotiator to the indigenous communities, said Tuesday that he would resign after bringing the current conflict closer to resolution. The Peruvian Government has been heavily criticized for the June 5 attack to quell nonviolent protests by Amazonian indigenous communities, which resulted in dozens of deaths of both protesters and police and left 150 of indigenous demonstrators injured.

In addition to decrees 1090 and 1064, AIDESEP points to at least seven other laws that continue to pose a threat to their constitutionally guaranteed rights. In addition to the repeal of all these controversial laws, indigenous people are demanding that the Peruvian Government lift the State of Emergency, in effect since May 9 in several regions throughout the Amazon. AIDESEP is also calling for the Government to drop criminal charges against Alberto Pizango and five other indigenous leaders. Pizango was given safe passage to leave the country and is now exiled in Nicaragua.

In the United States, fifteen human rights and environmental organizations recently sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other top Administration officials urging the United States to take immediate steps towards addressing the political crisis in Peru. Representatives from this coalition met with the U.S. Trade Representative’s office on Wednesday to again urge the U.S. Government to publicly clarify if Peru would be penalized for revoking the package of “free trade laws.”

The dramatic shift in the Garcia Administration’s discourse is likely due to the unprecedented international and domestic condemnation of the attacks on peaceful demonstrations on June 5 in Bagua. Tens of thousands protested in cities throughout Peru on June 11 in support of Peru’s indigenous peoples. Peruvian consulates and embassies worldwide have been the site of repeated vigils and protests. Tens of thousands have sent letters to Peruvian and US government officials. Celebrities including Q’orianka Kilcher and Benjamin Bratt, both part Peruvian as well as Nobel Prize Laureate Rigoberta Menchu, have publicly condemned the violence in Peru while calling for a peaceful solution.

Leading international human rights bodies including the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, and the International Labor Organization have pressed the Garcia Administration to end repression and uphold the rights of indigenous peoples. Yesterday, James Anaya, the UN Special Rapporteur of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Indigenous People arrived in Peru for a 3‑day visit to gather information about the violent incident in Bagua.

Amazon Watch’s Executive Director, Atossa Soltani, reacted to the news with the following statement: “The Peruvian Congress’s repeal of the two decrees is a welcome first step in bringing indigenous rights in Peru back to where they were before the decrees were promulgated in 2008. The conflict has become a watershed moment for Peru’s policies in the Amazon and has invigorated national debate about deep-rooted violations of indigenous peoples rights. Today’s good news notwithstanding, indigenous peoples are likely to continue to be at risk by Garcia’s policies to open up the Amazon to extractive industries.”

Since 2006, the government has authorized oil and gas concessions covering over 70 percent of the Peruvian Amazon, much of it on indigenous lands (see Perupetro map at http://mirror.perupetro.com.pe/exploracion01‑e.asp).
