ELF fight to save Moscow park

August 20, 2013 — Russia

anonymous report, from From Russia With Love:

“About two weeks ago we torched a tracked excavator at the place where workers were destroying Ismailovo park. The vehicle was parked on the side of the highway, where they were adding more lanes to the road. It took us 3–4 minutes to do the job. We approached. We set up our load of rags, no rush (we targeted spots between the cockpit, engine room and hydraulics in the arm). Added some gasoline and set it on fire. Quickly ran to the opposite side of the street, took our bottles of beer from bags and headed towards the nearby subway station. After about 10 minutes of walking we saw a firefighter brigade (all noisy and flashy) driving to the place of recent ecotage (they would be just in time to save the smoking remains).

Words of encouragement to our Ukranian comrades who for reasons unknown suspended all activity. We would also like to mention our rage at the sentence of Igor ‘Squash’ Kharchenko: http://grani.ru/Society/Law/m.217970.html [antifascist from Moscow, sentenced to prison after a controversial trial despite all evidence proving his innocence]

Have no doubt, we will avenge him.

PEEL SLAUGHTERS SILVER BIRCH TREES AS SALFORD PEOPLE POWER RESISTS

‘As the trees went down, our den went down and all our childhood memories were gone’ Olivia Cummings

Horrified residents launched a spontaneous demo last Friday as Peel Holdings trashed huge silver birch trees on the field behind their homes in Boothstown, with no warning and no health and safety measures in place.

The police were called, and Salford Council hurriedly slapped preservation orders on the trees but by that time most were already felled… “Birchfield was named after these birches and they’ve just butchered them” says resident Michelle Baglin

“It’s nothing less than we’ve come to expect from Peel” Councillor Garrido

“I was wearing my Salford City Reds top and it has Peel on there as a sponsor” recalls Olivia Cummings “I was walking about with my hand over it as much as I could; I was so embarrassed and so ashamed for wearing it…”

Olivier is just one of loads of local young people who have grown up playing around the huge silver birches in the field at the back of houses on Birchfield Drive in Boothstown. For them, both the field and the dens built near the trees are magical places that have spanned generations. Then, last Friday, it all came crashing down as Peel Holdings sensed a quick buck to be made.

“We used to play in the dens behind the trees, and, as the trees went down, our den went down and all our childhood memories were gone” adds Olivier “We can’t go in there any more.”

Her friend, Oliver Ward, also witnessed Peel Holdings’ eco policies at first hand…

“I was stood right in front of it and there were loads of silver birches, some sixty feet high, coming down, I was shocked” he says “Our childhood just crashed. They didn’t even put fences up, only when they knew we were going to tell. They lied to the police as well – it’s disgusting. I video‑d it on my brother’s phone.”

Peel Holdings might have got away with it completely, but for the pesky kids and residents who organised a spontaneous protest on the field, complete with banners.

“There was tree felling with no notification to residents or notices on the entrances to protect children, so we all headed on to the field and asked them to stop but they refused point blank” says resident Angela Hilton “We started trying to block them, the police were called and then they did stop and promised not to fell any more trees. But ten minutes later, after the police had gone, they carried on. We filmed about half a dozen trees being felled and we went out again, then more police came…”

During the events, local councillor, Robin Garrido, was trying to get an emergency tree preservation order from Salford Council but by the time it arrived, most of the damage had been done. Councillor Garrido says he was ‘appalled’…

“On Friday I got a phone call from one of the residents saying they were up in arms that Peel Holdings had got contractors felling trees on the site” he says “I got in touch with the Council which checked out the situation and advised that there were no preservation orders on the trees and that, because the site wasn’t in a conservation area, there was nothing they could do, which was quite right.

“I came down to the site, saw what was happening, spoke to the Council again and they agreed that we could get an emergency tree preservation order” he adds “That was at 4:45pm,and at about 5:45pm an officer of the Council came down to the site with the preservation orders, which means that they can’t remove any more trees without planning permission.

“We’re a bit concerned because we did agree with the contractors and Peel prior to that being served that no further trees would be felled that day” he explains “Immediately after I left and the residents went back to their houses they felled a further six trees which is absolutely disgusting. I think it’s appalling that a company should behave in that sort of way but to be honest it’s nothing less than we’ve come to expect from Peel.”

Residents believe that the motive for the tree slaughter is the preparation of the green site for building houses. In 2004 there was a planning application submitted for housing which was rejected on the grounds of wildlife habitat destruction amongst other things. Now the wildlife is being driven out.

Residents told the Salford Star that, in 2004, Peel Holdings owned half the field, while Salford Council owned the other half – yet when the Council was checking into the tree preservation order last week, apparently the site is wholly owned now by Peel.

“We want to know when the Council sold it” says Angela “If they sold it after 2004 when they knew Peel wanted to build on it then, obviously, that’s naughty. There are a lot of houses around here and the only places children can go to play is either over the East Lancs Road, which is a hazard, or the main road which is a danger. There’s always kids on here. This is the only green space they have.”

Last night, around forty local residents attended a meeting at Boothstown Library and vowed to carry on the fight against Peel.

“We don’t trust Peel Holdings, and we’ve got someone on lookout so they don’t cut any more trees down when they’re ‘tidying up’ ” says resident Michelle Baglin “We’re all working class on here, and we look forward to taking the kids on the field. They do have a good life but Peel don’t care. If we came down to their houses and ripped the trees out of their gardens I’m sure they would be kicking off like we are.

“Birchfield was named after these birches and they’ve just butchered them” she adds “Well, the public is not going to stay quiet any longer. The mums are going to speak up and carry on fighting for our children.”

work stopped at Hastings-Bexhill Link Road

11th August 2013

The Earth First! Summer Gathering has just finished.  This year in solidarity with the Coombe Haven Defenders, it was in a beautiful spot close by to the Hastings-Bexhill Link Road, the scene of big protests and camps to try to stop the road earlier in the year.

Each day there were Coombe Haven Defenders talks and walks, mostly inspiring ‘accidental’ invasions of the road work site, engaging in a bit of digger-diving or ‘footpath enforcement’, in other words stopping construction vehicles.

The road is of ‘low value’ even by the government’s standards, campaigners worked out a week ago.  There was a Campaign for Better Transport workshop about the Roads to Nowhere national road proposals (full map and more).

Climate Justice Activists Occupy Two Tar Sands Mining Sites in Utah

521886_597282230294554_359607144_n29 July 2013 In a direct action following the Canyon Country Action Camp, hundreds of activists have swarmed two mining sites in Utah tar sands.

521886_597282230294554_359607144_n29 July 2013 In a direct action following the Canyon Country Action Camp, hundreds of activists have swarmed two mining sites in Utah tar sands. Activists are currently locked down to machines, stopping work.

Canyon Country Rising Tide have joined with the Lakota, Dine, and Idle No More in condemning the tar sands in Utah as a defiling of the precious Green River ecosystem, and an assault on fresh air and clean water in the US. The tar sands and oil shale mining proposed in Utah and neighboring states would traverse more than one thousand square miles.

The first blockade went up two hours ago, and is still holding. Contracted Cardwell, Inc. contractors attempted to hit peaceful protestors with their trucks, but the activists were able to lock down, and unfurl a banner that reads, “If you build it they will come.”

Private security personnel and three police cars have shown up on the scene, but no arrests have been made yet.

The second blockade went up approximately one hour later, and is still holding.

TWAC Blockade Portland Transcanada Office with Tripod

553993_672459889449077_590622421_n29July

553993_672459889449077_590622421_n29July 2013 Update: The action has been declared a success as businesses were forced to lock their doors and close their blinds – apparently the dance party was just too much of them to even look at! In addition, all TWAC activists have avoided arrest and gear was not confiscated

A tripod has been erected at the entrance of a building that houses a TransCanada office, blocking the entrance and causing businesses inside to lock the doors. Protesters outside have responded with a very glittery and colorful dance party in front of the building and a banner that reads “No Tar Sands On Native Lands. Stop Genocide.”

IMG_0104

This action was organized by the Trans and Womyns Action Camp (TWAC), a direct action group for women and trans* and gender-variant folks. A correspondent from TWAC said that they took action today “to stand in solidarity with communities that are affected disproportionately by tar sands, including everyone in Alberta who is forced to live in areas of tar sands oil extraction, folks near the Gulf Coast affected by tar sand refinement plants, and communities who are living on the pipeline route.” With conditions on the Gulf Coast already toxic, high rates of asthma and cancer are becoming the norm, and the arrival of tar sands will only worsen these conditions. In the Athabaska watershed in Alberta, communities have seen the rise of a large number of rare cancers, and First Nations communities have been affected most heavily.

IMG_0103

Steph Cascadia, who is sitting at the top of the tripod, said, “Extraction of the tar sands is the most destructive project on the continent. It threatens the integrity of the entire biosphere, not to mention the First Nations peoples dependent upon access to clean water, land, and air for the health of their communities.”’

A correspondent from TWAC also said that TWAC was there “to remind the employees of TransCanada that the death and destruction does not end when they go home to their families, or when they leave to take their lunch break. Lots of other people have jobs and are often not able to work and provide for their families because of the actions that this corporation has taken, which solely benefit TransCananda–nobody else wins.”

Security guard in the foreground, dance party in the back

Security guard in the foreground, dance party in the back

Yudith Nieto, a TWAC participant who traveled from a community in Houston affected by tar sands refineries, said, “I am committed to amplifying the voices of communities of color that are systematically silenced, like mine, that are being disproportionately affected by environmentally destructive industries, and experiencing racism and classism.”

This action follows a long string of actions taken by groups and communities all across the country to stop tar sands extraction, transportation, and refinement – all of which put communities at risk and exacerbate global climate change. These actions can be taken virtually anywhere in the United States or Canada where there are corporations who invest in, construct, or otherwise do business with tar sands infrastructure. Little by little, we will stop these corporate marauders.

100 Anti-Fracking Activists Overwhelm Injection Well Site in Ohio

BQXb9Q-CQAAoaKQ.jpg-large29 July 2013 Over 100 anti-fracking activists have taken over the entrance to an injection well site in Ohio.

BQXb9Q-CQAAoaKQ.jpg-large29 July 2013 Over 100 anti-fracking activists have taken over the entrance to an injection well site in Ohio. The action comes at the end of the weekend-long Don’t Frack Ohio event, which was full of trainings and activities.

The rally is spearheaded by “concerned citizen” groups and 350.org as part of the national Summer Heat campaign. It is being labeled “Don’t Frack Ohio 2.0,” in reference to last year’s action involving more than a thousand participants.

Don’t Frack Ohio states on their webpage: “Remember Don’t Frack Ohio from last summer when over a thousand of us marched in Columbus, took over the statehouse rotunda and held a People’s Assembly? We are doing it again this year, with a bolder action and with more grassroots Ohio leadership. We are focusing on Class 2 injection wells and the infusion of toxic radioactive fracking waste brought in from other states and also being generated in Ohio. Last year the Oil & Gas industry injected almost 600 million gallons of toxic waste in our state, with little regard for our communities health and welfare.”

The goal of this and other actions are to get the governor to ban injection wells, in particular, which would effectively end fracking in the state.
