Chief Exec. of Tesco, Terry Leahy, today evaded various campaigners at Manchester’s Whitworth Art Gallery who were anxious to discuss his company’s recent £25 mil. investment in Manchester University’s “Sustainable Consumption” Institute, yet another Tesco green-wash……………

This afternoon various interested groups convened outside the University of Manchester General Meeting of university executives, interested business parties and distinguished alumni to “welcome” the event’s guest of honour Tesco Chief Executive Terry Leahy. Terry was afforded such star status at the Meeting, held at the Whitworth Art Gallery, in recognition of his company’s recent investment of £25 million in research in the University’s “Sustainable Consumption” Institute.

Demonstrators were rather less enamoured with old Terry and his cheeky green-washing tactics. To make Terry feel at home, members of the Manchester-University based campaigns collective scrubbed the road a lovely shade of green and, dressed in white overalls and wielding mops and buckets of green-wash (this season’s new black), awaited Big Tel’s arrival. Campaigns Collective were also keen to register their discontent with the direction the University has taken under Vice Chancellor Alan Gilbert, infamous advocate of a neoliberal style of university management favouring private investment and significant budgets-cuts for learning facilities with a penchant for extravagant meals where major funders (such as Terry himself) are wined and dined.

Also in the welcoming committee were members of the Keep Chorlton Interesting campaign who’ve been getting rather cross in recent months over planned proposals for a Tesco Metro to be built on Manchester Road, Chorlton. Accompanying them were other Anti-Tesco campaigners from the Greater Manchester area, including some from Friends of the Earth. They’d brought a “Golden Cork in the Ear” award for the ‘company that most ignores the opinions of local communities’ to present to Terry on a plush velvet cushion.

Although Manchester’s very own Rhythms of Resistance kept spirits high (and feet warm) with their Samba music, unfortunately Terry didn’t pick up his award or even use the front door, sneaking in through some other super-secret entrance elsewhere thus avoiding a red-faced green-washing.

Not deterred protestors wandered down to the local Tesco to give it a scrub instead.

London’s Rampart still open

Rampart Newsletter 23rd January 2008

Hi there,

Latest news, as of writing, we have lodged an appeal to the court decision back in December and are now waiting back for a hearing date..
to decide whether there can be an appeal or not and whether or not we have a ‘stay of execution’ (the Rampart building DOESN’T have a planning application on it yet). Oh well. At least the possession order from the last court case is delayed until this hearing.

In all this uncertainty we’re not rolling over and playing dead. We’re still very much open and operating at (nearly) normal levels.. whatever that means! We’re taking on new event proposals and invite you to send further requests so contact us at the usual address rampart@mutualaid.org

For events, in the case of eviction, we have the new building to fall back on, which has taken shape nicely and now has the capacity to host meetings and workshops, with the music space not far off being ready. More helping hands please, if you have any spare send them our way!

We always need people to help with the occupation rota, 3 in the building at all times, so email us if you have a spare day or evening free. We are also looking at, and I stress only looking at, the benefits
and implications of becoming a legal entity in order to negotiate with landlords for use of buildings. How this affects our ability to operate as a space for radical politics is under scrutiny. Anyone with knowledge or experience of forming a legal entity for such a purpose please get in contact, we’d really like to hear what you have to say.

So happenings at the Rampart the coming week looks like this:

When Mexican paramilitary forces shot Brad Will in the chest, killing him, his camera fell from his hands. But it didn’t stop recording. It continued moving from hand to hand, telling Brad’s story, as well as the story of the movement of movements that he was a part of. From the squats of New York to the forests of Oregon, from the anti-globalization protests in Seattle, Prague, Quebec to the popular uprising in Oaxaca, Brad’s camera paints us a picture of what his life was about, and what so many of his friends continue to struggle for.

Film screening and debate. Starting 8PM

Jet-set waltz off while the planet burn

21.01.2008
Over twenty environmental protesters have this morning breached security at Edinburgh Airport and blockaded the entrance to the private jet company, Greer Aviation.

The activists, from radical direct action group Plane Stupid Scotland, pledged that today’s actions come as part of a nationwide campaign to reverse the current plans for a tripling of air travel in Scotland which they say flies in the face of the government’s own climate targets.

The protestors, with banners reading ‘This planet has no emergency exits,’ and dressed in business atire with individual private jet wings strapped to their backs highlighted that unregulated business jet use must be brought into the aviation debate.

Plane Stupid Scotland spokesperson Oli said:

Exponential economic growth is not compatible with climate change mitigation. The majority of aviation growth stems from the demand of the wealthiest 10%, and this is why we target private jet use today. We will never succeed in saving this planet and maintaining our existence on it unless we commit to fighting for the right to existence for all through dismantling capitalism. If we don’t use our energy to join with others to make real global change, to create new ways of living together, and to find genuinely sustainable alternative job opportunities for those employed in high emission industries, then we live in a system in which the planet suffers alongside us, the people.

Today’s action aims to highlight the fact that in the UK, private jet use is the fastest growing sector of the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions – aviation[1]. Yet private jet journeys typically have a global warming impact that can be an incredible 50-70 times that of the same journey made by train.[2]

Plane Stupid spokesperson Lucy said:

“Whilst the British Government is eager to flout their green credentials in the upcoming Climate Change Bill, they are still supporting expansion at 24 airports across the UK – including every single Scottish airport. But the science clearly shows that it will be impossible for Britain to meet the CO2 reduction targets set out in the bill if these plans go ahead – which is the real reason why emissions from aviation are specifically excluded from the bill.”

The Department for Transport’s own figures show that around half of the forecast expansion in Scottish air transport, from 14 million to 50 million passenger movements by 2030, will take place at Edinburgh airport – more than doubling its emissions. Yet incredibly the scale of carbon emissions has been excluded from the government consultation on the expansion plans (3).

Spokesperson Jo added.

“A staggering 98% of flights from Edinburgh are to destinations reachable by bus or train – both over ten times less polluting. We see no attempt by BAA Edinburgh to make its own contribution to cutting carbon emissions. Instead they push ahead with their promotion of binge-flying disregarding all the scientific warnings.”

Despite unprecedented awareness about the impact of air travel on global warming, aircraft manufacturers forecast worldwide deliveries of new passenger jets will come close to 10,000 over the next decade – almost double the production rate for the previous 10 years. If UK expansion plans are allowed to go ahead, around 3000 planes will be added to British fleets alone (4).

Plane Stupid Scotland argues that the links must be made between the aviation industry profiteering off the planet, local residents and workers alike. Plane Stupid Scotland is fed up with waiting for government to act in the face of an unprecedented climate threat. Today is the first action of Plane Stupid Scotland who in turn are just one part of the growing movement of climate activists who have decided that they must act themselves to stop climate change.

Plane Stupid Scotland are Calling for

1) The Government to end all subsidies given to the Scottish aviation industry
2) An urgent, targeted and public investment strategy in the alternatives to short-haul aviation
3) No more runways- and a strategy to dismantle existing ones.
4) Mobilization of affected communities to determine their own lives against aviation expansion and runaway climate change.

Sources:

[1] Air travel as a whole already accounts for over 13% of the UK ’s total contribution to climate change. The latest figures available show 6.9% of European flights recorded by air traffic control authorities were “business aviation” in 2005, with an estimated 40% flying empty on “positioning flights” to pick up passengers. The number of business jet flights was growing at 8.9% two years ago – twice as fast as the rest of air traffic – and is believed to have accelerated since.

Ten people from Plane Stupid Scotland were arrested. Four people in steel lock-on tubes who were blocking the vehicle gate onto the taxi-way were cut out by the Faslane cutting team after successfully blockading for four hours. One of the four was taken to hospital for treatment of hypothermia. There had earlier been a long dispute between members of action support and the police. The police were preventing access to the blockaders who were clearly shivering and soaked by the poring rain. after twenty minutes it was negotiated that a coat could be placed over one man who was particularly suffering but it was left too late to stop him from getting hypothermia. We’re still waiting to hear from the hospital about his condition.

Two pairs of people were d-locked over the two main entrances to the building and were also cut out and nicked at the same time. Two women who had climbed on the roof of the Greer building waltzed around the roof and had a tea party to the sound of live clarinet playing. The cops eventually put a ladder up and they too were arrested. They had remained on the roof for four hours. All support were able to leave. Agro from the cutting team was minimal but the arrival of reinforcements in riot gear was somewhat over the top.

19.1.2008

Anti-GM protesters have cut down 19 genetically modified pine trees at a research site near Rotorua. The attack happened at some stage over the weekend.

A 1.5 metre hole was found along the fenceline, made of 3.5 metre high electrified wire. The crop destroyers are assumed to have burrowed through that hole before chopping down the trees, almost 1/4 of the 80 trees on the site.

Police found a spade with a “GE Free New Zealand” sticker on it leaning up against the fence. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Rotorua site was the same one protested against in 2005, where four people were arrested, one of whom was also pepper sprayed by Police. That protest was organised by the People’s Moratorium Enforcement Agency, who have celebrated the weekend’s action.

“The destruction of the GE trees in Rotorua highlights the resistance to genetic engineering in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Because ERMA is not stopping GE material from being released into the environment, the people of Aotearoa have to intervene,” said PMEA spokesperson Felicity Perry.

Rotorua, New Zealand – Environmental saboteurs appear to be responsible for the destruction of field trial crop of genetically modified radiata pine and Norway spruce trees at the Crown Research Institute Scion’s base. On Monday, vandals circumvented an electrified security fence by tunneling underneath it, and chopped down 20 genetically engineered trees.

A spade with a “GE Free New Zealand” sticker was left behind, apparently to make sure authorities new why the nighttime raid was carried out. Researchers will likely be forced to abandon this particular experiment since a full 20% of their trees were destroyed.

Benjamin Potts and Giles Lane were transferred from the Yushin Maru No. 2 to the Australian Customs vessel Oceanic Viking early in the morning at 0200 Hours Melbourne time (1300 Hours GMT). The two men were transferred to the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin at 0930 Hours Melbourne time (2030 Hours GMT).

Both men were happy to be reunited with their shipmates and eager to return to chasing the Japanese whaling fleet in the Southern Oceans. Both men reported that although they were roughed up when they first boarded the whaling ship, that they were treated well during their time onboard. The only injury was a bruised wrist suffered by Giles Lane.

“It did not take long before the whalers realized that they made a huge public relations mistake in keeping us on their ship,” said Benjamin Potts. “We made it clear to them that Sea Shepherd was committed to stopping their illegal whaling activities.”

“Although we appreciate the concern that people have expressed for our welfare, it is important to remember that this is not about us.” said Giles Lane. “It’s about stopping this cruel and illegal whale hunt. The treatment that we received was trivial in comparison to the suffering that the whales experience at the hands of the Japanese whalers. They may have been rough with us but at least we were not harpooned, electrocuted and mutilated. This is not about us, it’s about the whales.”

The Steve Irwin is continuing its pursuit of the Japanese whaling fleet. “This is the 8th day that whales have not been killed,” said Captain Paul Watson. “Every day that we stop the whalers is a victory. We will continue to intervene, harass, block, and obstruct the whalers at every opportunity.”

The Steve Irwin is presently at 59 Degrees 46 Minutes South and 85 Degrees 59 Minutes East and on the tail of the Japanese whaling fleet.

=================

“With “allies” like the Australian government and Greenpeace, it is becoming increasing difficult to keep the Japanese fleet from killing whales,” said Captain Paul Watson. “Australian Customs deliberately led us away from the fleet and Greenpeace is guarding the coordinates like the crown jewels to prevent us re-locating the fleet.”

Lack of Cooperation May Kill the Whales
From onboard the Steve Irwin in the Southern Oceans (18/01/08)

The Australian Customs and Fisheries Patrol vessel Oceanic Viking has thrown the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin off the trail of the Japanese fleet.

After picking up the two Sea Shepherd crewmembers from the Yushin Maru No. 2 the Oceanic Viking notified the Steve Irwin to head for a rendezvous point a few hours away.

This was unusual considering that the Yushin Maru No. 2 was only about ten miles away at the time. The Steve Irwin was forced to stop tailing the Yushin Maru No. 2 to meet up with the Oceanic Viking. This allowed the whaler to head off in an unknown direction to rejoin the factory ship Nisshin Maru.

After dropping off Benjamin Potts and Giles Lane, the Oceanic Viking headed off in a direction away from the Japanese fleet. The fleet then apparently changed course and has now been lost from Sea Shepherd. Greenpeace tagging along with the Nishin Maru has reported that the catcher boats have met back up with the main fleet.

Although Sea Shepherd has been relaying the position of the catcher boats to the Greenpeace ship Esperanza for the last three days, Greenpeace refuses reciprocate and refuses to reveal the present location of the fleet.

Complicating the search is the fact that the Japanese have sent a new ship the Fukoyoshi No. 68 to shadow the Steve Irwin at all times. The vessel is not part of the whaling fleet. It’s a large Japanese drag trawler. It does not have any fishing gear onboard and seems to have more electronic gear than normal for a fishing vessel. This ship is apparently reporting the Steve Irwin’s position to the Japanese fleet.

Sea Shepherd has shut down whaling for a week. Unless the Steve Irwin can find the fleet soon, the killing will begin again. The Oceanic Viking will take pictures of dying whales and Greenpeace will hang banners, take pictures and continue on with their ineffective stunts. They will not stop the killing.

“If whales begin to die within the next few days, I will hold Greenpeace and the Australian government responsible,” said Captain Paul Watson. “They know we can stop the killing because whales don’t die when Sea Shepherd arrives. By leading us off the tail of the whalers and refusing to cooperate on coordinates they are deliberately helping the whalers to escape from Sea Shepherd and to resume the slaughter of the whales. I understand that Greenpeace needs kill footage and images of “heroic eco-warriors” buzzing about in inflatables but that does not stop the harpoons. Our very presence will deter the Japanese from killing whales. Sea Shepherd is the best weapon that Greenpeace can use to stop the resumption of whaling. By withholding cooperation they are contributing to the death of the whales. If any whales are killed within the next week I will hold Greenpeace responsible for their deaths because they have the power to cooperate with Sea Shepherd to prevent the killing from continuing.”

The Steve Irwin is conducting helicopter surveillance patrols to re-locate the whaling fleet. The fleet should be within two hundred miles of Sea Shepherd.

Rozbrat Collective would like to thank everyone who in the last days expressed their support and their readiness to defend our place. We’ve received hundereds of e-mails, telephone calls, letters, both from indviduals and organizations, social movements from Poland and from abroad.

In general, after the visit of the bailiff last week (8/01/2008), nothing significant has happened, nothing that would change our situation. We’re still under the threat of eviction, but the date is really hard to predict. We’re still analysing our legal situation, considering both the organizations and initiatives that are active at Rozbrat, and the people living here for years. Within next 2 or 3 weeks our legal situation should be clear and we will publish another communique. However, we would like to state that we will defend Robrat both with all legal means and with all means necessary.

So far, Rozbrat is still active! We invite all of you for the events that will be organized in January and February: gigs, exhibitions, lectures, film screenings and so on… We invite you to visit our Anarchist Library and our Infoshop, where you can get some useful pamphlets, leaflets, posters, or borrow a book. Please visit our website www.rozbrat.org – in the announcements (in Polish “zapowiedzi”) section we will be announcing all the cultural, social and political activities that we organize and we will inform you about the current situation of Rozbrat.

Struggle continues!
08.01.2008 – ALARM AT ROZBRAT!

Today, around 10 a.m. bailiff together with cops came to Rozbrat squat. The policemen drilled the lock of the gate, the bailiff had a court’s permission to come in and estimate the price of the ground. The middle part of Rozbrat squat (including both concert halls, gallery, bars, library and part of the living area) was indebted for a long time by a company that doesn’t exist anymore. The ground price evaluation today means that the ground can be auctioned witthin one or two months – that can mean the end of Rozbrat squat – the longest occupied space in Poland.

We’ll keep you informed. We count on you being ready to organize solidarity actions by you and your groups!

We’re not gonna give up without fight!

Shell to Sea revisit RPS office

Thursday January 17th 2008

Unite against raw gasAgainst raw gas wallThursday January 17th 2008

Yesterday, over 30 local people again visited the RPS office in Belmullet to again let it be known that under no circumstances would they accept raw gas running through their community. Even though RPS group director PJ Rudden claimed recently to media that he was “pleasantly surprised” by the reaction to the short listed routes, he will be in no doubt what the majority of people in Kilcommon parish think of the routes following this most recent visit. Four members of the group went in to the RPS offices to outline some of their objections to the current pipeline proposals. They also handed in a petition signed by members of the community stating their objections to putting their pipeline anywhere through the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in Glengad or the Special Protection Area of Broadhaven Bay.

It also emerged recently that the County Council are once again doing their utmost to assist Shell in anyway they can. This time they have put in a planning proposal to upgrade the road from the refinery site back to Glengad (via the Leanamore road). The upgrade of the road will cease immediately after the gate down to landfall leaving no doubt who the instigators of this upgrade are. Approximately 6 kilometres of the road will be widened while the whole of the road upgrade will be strengthened with wire mesh to withstand the increase traffic that the council forsee. This is yet another slap in the face to the local community, who having been waiting for road repairs for years but must watch their Council spend their taxes on Shell’s infrastructure.

It also seems that Shell are continuing with their long held strategy of blaming any problems they have on protestors actions.

During the Afri Hedge School that was held in Erris in early November, a talk was given by Fr Kevin O’Hara (who founded the Centre for Social and Corporate Responsibility, which monitors oil companies in Nigeria). He stated that in one case of an oil spill at which he was present, a Shell engineer upon turning up at the spill location was straight away able to point out to other employees what had caused the oil spill as it had been a reoccurring problem. However officially of course the Shell excuse was that sabotage had caused the oil spill. The only problem for Shell was that the Shell engineer had been caught on film directing the employees to the fault in the pipeline, which was the true cause of the spill.

It seems as if Shell are using a similar tactic here in Mayo. In the latest refinery ‘Environmental Report’ (18th Dec 07) that Shell has compiled, they admitted that one of their 4 dust collection points showed a reading that was well above their limit for dust deposition (measured 530mg/m2/day where 350mg/ m2/day is the limit). The dust collection pots were in place for over a month however Shell blame the high level of dust recorded on the fact that protestors “possibly vandalised” the dust gauge during an incursion on to the site on the 9th of November.

See the Environmental Reports (sic) here:

17th January: the activists — Australian Benjamin Potts, 28, and Briton Giles Lane, 35 — were detained Tuesday after boarding the harpoon ship to protest Japan’s whaling programme. They were handed over to Austrialia’s ‘Ocean Viking’ earlier today.

A Japanese whaling ship late Thursday handed over to an Australian customs vessel two anti-whaling activists who climbed aboard two days earlier, an official from Japan’s Fisheries Agency said.

Australia sent the customs ship, the Oceanic Viking, to the Japanese whaling ship in a bid to end the stand-off involving the activists of the militant Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

“Two Sea Shepherd activists who intruded onto the Yushin Maru No 2 and have been in custody on the ship were handed over to the Oceanic Viking chartered by the Australian government,” Hideaki Okada, a whaling official at the Fisheries Agency in Tokyo, told AFP early Friday.

Hopefully they will be returned back to Sea Shepherd’s ‘Steve Irwin’ very soon, that is the plan.
