Art Not Oil Plymouth & friends protest inside & outside Shell Wildlife Exhibition, 12.7.08

On Saturday 12th July, activists from Art Not Oil Plymouth, Greenpeace Plymouth and Peace Boat, took action — for the second time — inside and outside Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery, to protest against Shell’s sponsorship of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. (Shell will not be sponsoring the new Exhibition, but the 2007–8 version is still touring.)

Activists dressed as Greenwash inspectors entered the Museum to detect and spotlight the terrible greenwashing that Shell is trying to do in this city. The activists spoke with the people inside about it and found that there was strong agreement that Shell is guilty of trying to launder its image as a friend of wildife and of the planet!

Outside, the rest of the Art Not Oil group and Peter Le Mare (who had just docked his Peace Boat nearby, on his way to Climate Camp and beyond) held banners and gave away more than 130 leaflets about the protest. BBC news were there and interviewed both groups giving to the action a central place in the local news that evening!

In September, Art Not Oil Plymouth will be showing the ‘Shell’s Wild Lie’ exhibition in one of the local cafes of the city, which features images of what this oil and other companies are really doing to our planet.

Phones and privacy at the camp for climate action.

Traditionally it has been the content of communication that has been the focus of government surveillance but the police are increasingly interested in data mining techniques to uncover patterns of association. Simple data, when stored, aggregated and analyzed using sophisticated computer algorithms, contains far more information than is commonly appreciated.

Traditionally it has been the content of communication that has been the focus of government surveillance but the police are increasingly interested in data mining techniques to uncover patterns of association. Simple data, when stored, aggregated and analyzed using sophisticated computer algorithms, contains far more information than is commonly appreciated. Collating mobile phone numbers, and the data retained by network providers, can provide the police with a powerful incite into our networks of associations. This is not only an invasion of our privacy but may also threaten our ability to work together effectively.

At least years climate camp the police were taking people phone from them during stop and search. As well as browsing through people
phonebooks and text messages, they were typing *#06# to get the phones unique serial number (IMEI). They would then look up the registered owner of phone then threaten the holder of the phone with being arrested on suspicion of theft if they refused to prove that they were the owner of the phone by revealing their identity.

To reduce the ability of the police to steal our identities and learn
more about our social networks, please consider the following advice.

Mobile phones are useful tools for communicating and organising — we do not advise you to leave them at home. You will find them essential for staying informed and informing others. However…

Copy the entries in your phonebook and leave it at home.

Delete from your phonebook all but the numbers that will be essential during the week.

Rename those contacts to remove surnames, perhaps using code names instead.

Erase your sent and received call logs and text messages and do repeat this regularly.

Make use of the security features of your phone so that a PIN code is required to access any of its features.

There are generally two types of security on mobile phones, the PIN that protects the phone and PIN2 that protects the SIM card so it can’t be used in another phone without the code. It may be a little inconvenient to have to type in the number each time but it’s better than allowing the cops to browse through your phone book, call logs and messages.

If you can’t set your phone to require a PIN code each time it is used, simply switch off your phone when it looks like a police stop and search is likely.

Might be worth noting about mobiles:

* That the police are also able to retrieve phone calls and sent text messages, both from the phone and the SIM. Once deleted off the phone they are NOT gone for good. If you have made a foolish phone call or sent something dodgy, and you are at risk from having your phone taken, get a whole new phone and SIM card.

* Police can use your mobile as a tracking device of your whereabouts, this evidence has already been used in cases — especially if making a call. This pinpoints your exact location. So don’t take it anywhere you’d rather the cops didn’t know about. Disconnecting the phone by taking out the battery apparently can stop this as the phone is no longer connected to any electrical source.

* Police can bug a mobile and use it as a listening device… if you are saying something you don’t want the cops to hear, and you want to be extra paranoid, remove the battery from your phone or leave it elsewhere. Turning it off will not necessarily work!

* If the cops ever get your phone and give it back to you… give it to someone else not involved in anything you are, donate it to charity or burn it. Do not ever use it again!

Your advice about having an alternative SIM is OK if police are searching the physical phone for text messages. However if you are concerned about surveillance involving your mobile phone company, you should be aware that text messages (and phone calls too I would think) send a SIM ID *and* the phone IMEI. On that basis, sending a message using your contract phone but a PAYG SIM will still be easily traceable to you.

The best approach is to buy a PAYG phone with cash and only top it up with vouchers bought with cash, and use that alongside your regular phone. However you can’t get away from the fact that it is still a location-tracking device. If you have special need to be careful — and that’s a personal judgement — only put the battery in when you are away from your house to collect messages or to make calls. That said if you live in a highly populated area — such as flats in a city — then you have less reason to worry — the location tracking is not very sensitive AFAIK and it’s a right royal pain for the authorities to get the data. If you’re a Climate Camp activist and not part of a terrorist cell then it’s probably too much hassle for them.

It should be obvious but also be careful when sending personally-identifiable information in text messages — telephone numbers, addresses, email addresses, account numbers etc. In theory the same goes for voice content as software now can transcribe voice content quite reliably — however this often can’t be avoided and the best thing to do is not to worry about it too much. Remember: our worrying is what some upper echelons of the police want!

Ultimately for the activist there is a anti-surveillance/convenience trade-off. Don’t get paranoid as this makes you less effective in your chosen field. Be careful but, unless you are doing activism that is targetted for the harshest oppression, tolerate a bit of surveillance rather than re-organising your habits completely to avoid it.

DO BRING A PHONE TO CAMP!

If you can, bring a new PAYG phone, don’t fill it with your friends numbers, don’t use it from home and don’t call your mum on it.

Don’t ever put your normal SIM in your new phone or your new SIM in your normal phone.
Use the phone at the climate camp to:
keep the legal team informed about arrests and stop & searches
keep the media team informed about protests and actions
keep yourself informed about things going on around camp and beyond
call for help in a medical emergency

Climate Camp goes back to Heathrow
Heathrow Conference
Saturday 26th July, 12 noon — 5pm,
Harlington Baptist Church,
High St, Harlington

All Welcome

Last August thousands of people spent a week camping in a field in the village of Sipson, which would be destroyed if Heathrow expansion went ahead, to draw attention to the threat of climate change. The event transformed Heathrow expansion into a national and even international debate on how we respond to climate change.

While this year we are concentrating our efforts at Kingsnorth where energy giant E.ON the Government is proposing to build a new coal-fired power station, we have not forgotten Heathrow. So, we decided to organise a conference to discuss with local residents and environmental organisations the next steps in the campaign to stop Heathrow expansion, titled:

“What do we do if the worst comes to the worst and the Government says ‘yes’?

The conference brings together the Camp for Climate Action, local campaign groups HACAN and NoTRAG (No Third Runway Action Group), and Greenpeace to discuss a broad strategy against expansion. This is the first time that local campaign groups and international environmental organizations have teamed up with the Camp for Climate Action to stage an event. We see this cross-fertilisation of ideas and experience as essential parts of Climate Camp strategy to develop a diverse social movement against climate change and for social justice.

The conference will focus on fusing our different ideas on how to stop expansion, from political lobbying to mass direct action, so we can all support each others efforts. More than that, we hope that we can learn from each other and develop new ideas that can have broad appeal.

The day will begin at 12 noon with short introductory talks on the latest state of play, on the implications of expansion for noise, climate change and community destruction, and around ideas for effective campaigning. After lunch, the bulk of the day will involve more structured discussions around moving forward together, followed by a final plenary session.

We’ve had conformation that in addition to many climate campers and local residents, politicians and trade unionists will be attending, so it looks like being an exciting event!

The following day Camp for Climate Action will set off in ‘a climate caravan’ on their journey to Kingsnorth in Kent where this year’s camp will be held.

Directions to the Conference are:

Heathrow Conference
Harlington Baptist Church,
High St, Harlington

About 8 minutes walk from Bath Road.
Take the 90 bus from Feltham, Hatton Cross or Hayes and Harlington Station;
Or take the 140 from Heathrow or Hayes and Harlington Station
Or the H98 from Hounslow, Cranford or Hayes and Harlington Station.- all stop outside the church.

NB there is only limited parking available.

The event is free but small donations on the day towards lunch and venue hire will be welcome!

Feel free to just turn up but it would be ideal if you could let us know before if you will be coming. Email info@hacan.org.uk or call John Stewart on 020 7737 6641

Digging In Around Coal

The deadline is drawing ever nearer for this August’s Camp for Climate Action (see www.climatecamp.org.uk), and it’s not just the ice caps that are hotting up. Whilst last month saw a high profile coal train heist up north on the railway line to Drax Power station, the planned open-cast coal mine at Lodge Farm in Derbyshire has had plans scuppered by squatters! They took the site on the 18th June under the banner ‘Leave it in the Ground’, with full support of the owner and local population, and have just had their eviction kicked out of court until 18th July. And now campers have just entered into dialogue with the coal miner’s union NUM, in an attempt to break the traditional wedge between environmentalists and workers.

Despite the lies spread by the Government-sponsored UK Coal Forum, coal is neither the cheapest option for our energy future (with coal prices doubling in the last 2 years), nor the most reliable (this May saw the biggest brownouts in Britain since 1987 from conventional power failure), nor will it make Britain independent from foreign import (70% of our coal being imported from Russia). With Thatcher’s destruction of the steel and engineering industries, neither do we now have the infrastructure for coal power.

So, in Green Park Station on Saturday the 12th July, from 2 til 5, Bath Activist Network held a ‘Roots of Change’ day of stalls and info on how better to spend the £1.7 billion that EON will waste at Kingsnorth’s new supercritical coal units, as well as demonstrating better, greener, more practical ways of living — and we’re joined by Transition Town Bath, the London Road Food Co-op, and the Camp for Climate Action photo exhibition!

Fuck Off Tesco

This week on TescoWatch, the Bath Bomb can regrettably inform you that the Tesco infestation just gets worse and worse. With a potential Tesco Metro sniffing around Keynsham, a Tesco Express patiently sitting on the old petrol station on Englishcombe Lane, and the new one at Bathwick Hill due to open in the next two months, the future for independent retail and real food looks bleak. On the plus side, the Tesco Express and Tesco housing trying to get in at Upper Bristol Road have just had their planning application refused. Fingers crossed.

Meanwhile, 5 minutes away on Lower Bristol Road, Tesco are being coy about their superstore plans for the old Bath Press site. Built at the end of the 19th Century, this is a little nugget of Bath’s industrial history, the home of Pitman Shorthand. Snapped up by Tesco front group St James Finance for a bargain basement £52 million (or a more conservative £20 mil, depending on who you talk to), it’ll soon probably be crawling with strip lights and chronically overworked and underpaid shelf-stackers. The increased traffic load will no doubt prove no threat whatsoever for pupils of the nearby infant school, and will be totally conducive to the £75 million council funding dedicated to ridding Bath of HGVs. That’s joined up thinking for you.

Councillor David Dixon and his Facebook cronies (what are you, 12?) is probably creaming himself right now.

Hands Off My Wrinkles You Sexist Shit

A current TV advert promotes its beauty product by opening with the line, ‘for women who aren’t yet ready for plastic surgery.’ Just another ploy to make females shell out more money on vanity products, or is there more to it than that? If someone’s not yet ready for something, it’s implied that, at some point, they will be. What message does this put across, watched by millions of women? The reality is that there’s so much wrong with that short and seemingly harmless statement. It differentiates based on gender, implies, or perhaps even dictates, that it’s expected that women should have the marks that life has left them with altered or taken away through invasive processes. Beyond this, the statement insinuates, that even younger females who ‘aren’t yet ready’ should be taking steps to ensure that signs of living don’t show through. The reality is that discrimination based on gender comes in many guises and in all walks of life and affects us all. Sometimes it’s malicious and sometimes just a subconscious by-product of the society we live in. So next time you see an advert, think about what’s implied, or what you’re being told and ask yourself, is that really okay?

Get The Pigs Off Our Streets!

We’ve all seen them littered around the streets of Bath: hundreds of ceramic pigs, forming an exhibition celebrating our city’s heritage. But we are now being swamped with a new kind of pig — less useful, and definitely less welcome on our streets — the city marshal. Joining the deluge of uniformed human oddities: cops, community (‘don’t make me call a real cop’) support officers, security guards, taxi marshals and street marshals, these guys are another example of the growing surveillance we are subjected to on a daily basis by the watchful eyes of our friendly and non-voyeuristic state (capturing each of us nearly 400 times a day on a variety of CCTV and monitoring equipment). Without any real powers, there’s legally not much city marshals can do to you that an ordinary shopper couldn’t, but armed with walkie-talkies, swish uniforms and a failed police entrance exam paper — these guys are out to get you! How many cameras (87 at the last count, costing us around £300,000 a year), cops, fake cops and even faker cops do we need before we decide ‘enough is enough’ — that we are capable of controlling our own lives and filling our time without the state watching our every move? So, try not to be nervous, you know they can smell fear. But don’t worry, you’ve got nothing to hide, dear reader… Or do you?

Farmer Cull Imminent As Badgers Spared

On Saturday the 28th June, members of Bath Activist Network travelled to Cardiff Bay to join the Viva! badger cull demo outside the Welsh Assembly. Welsh politicians announced in April that it proposes the mass murder of badgers in order to appease farmers. Badgers are being used as scapegoats by dairy farmers as being the main culprits in the spread of bovine TB. However, the real culprit is the barbaric practice of dairy farming: as well as having their calves murdered, dairy cows are so intensively farmed and exploited (not to mention being forcibly impregnated every year, far more often than they would be naturally), that they face numerous infections and rarely survive beyond 5 years old, which is a fraction of their normal lifespan. Ireland has been culling badgers since 2002, yet this has not affected their TB problem — even after the brutal culling of 30% of the indigenous population of 200,000, the disease has still failed to diminish.

Around 300 people stood in front of a gargoyle of Margaret Thatcher (which for some reason is plastered to the front of the building, next to a carving of Nye Bevan) waving placards and badger masks for a photo shoot and chanting for about an hour. After speeches and declarations of support from absent celebrities, the group went off to a hotel for stalls, more speeches and workshops.

However, on the way back, 35 dodgy-looking characters slipped of from the Viva! procession, shunning the promised free vegan food back at the hotel and made their way to the nearest foie gras restaurant. During a previous visit to Cardiff, a BAN member had noticed the disgusting stuff being sold in the city, so had smuggled banners and leaflets over the border, planning to demo them after the badgers had been saved. The first restaurant, Woods Brasserie, was quickly surrounded with shouting, banner-waving protesters, and even locking the door and drawing the blinds didn’t prevent a stream of leaflets and angry words flying through the letterbox. Following protestors from the badger cull demo, the cops soon got shitty, pushing people around and imposing a confused Section 14 notice to force the protest from the area, roundly ignored by protesters. As more cops, including the head of the National Extremist Tactical Coordination Unit (NETCU) arrived, activists split off into small groups to reassemble 10 minutes later outside Garcon, another restaurant, with some activists managing to sneak inside, leaflet and generally make nuisances of themselves. Being on private property, the protest was soon forced to disband by cops, who curiously ordered protesters to disperse in the same direction, which they did — straight back to Woods! After 10 more minutes’ demoing and pushy-shovey from the cops, the owner re-printed his menus, minus the foie gras.

And what of the badgers? English Parliament has voted to repeal the slaughter (enraging the bloodthirsty National Farmers Union, who are lodging an appeal), possibly remembering the smashed traps and publicity disasters of the last cull. Welsh badgers however are not so lucky, and the cull is to resume across the border. But Wales is only a short train trip away, and there’s nothing more satisfying than decommissioning tools of brutality such as badger traps. If you have info to help bodge the badger cull, check out http://www.badger-killers.co.uk/

Free Normality Testing

To CELEBRATE Mad pride Day on Monday 14th July, the MAD HATTERS OF BATH are offering free normality testing to the general public and tourists in Bath City Centre from 12 noon onwards. Concerns over the growing numbers of non-normal people have meant the British Government has had to introduce many new laws. These include anti-terrorist legislation, which does not just affect ‘traditional terrorists’ but also the new breed of ‘dangerous demonstrative environmental activist’. The criminal justice legislation is renowned for its restrictions on travellers, making living in a vehicle or caravan not just ‘not normal’, but also illegal. ASBO’s are used to keep teenagers under control. The changes to the mental health act means forcible medication of people living in the community is easier than it ever has been. Publicity campaigns funded by the Government and administered by MIND, RETHINK and Mental Health Media all contrast mental well being (normal) and mental illness (deviant). There are far too many mentally ill, or as we prefer to say ‘non-normal’ people in Britain today and we must, as a matter of national urgency, help find and normalise these ill people as soon as possible.
We do not like labelling people but it is imperative that we find those who are normal and hopefully their normality can be diagnosed and stored and maybe we will be able to teach ‘normality’ self-management techniques to those who are outside the normality spectrum. We are expecting this radical new technique to immediately reduce any extreme of mood or ideas, and the general public will know they are safe as their views are filtered down to the lowest common denominator of normality. We expect this to mean: a life time of moaning, persistent vegetative TV viewing, Saturday night drinking for the under 30’s, shopping, shopping and more shopping, life enhancing removal of body hair, total disregard of the exploitation of the planet or people on it.

Balls To Car Culture

Our blushing journalist took part in this year’s World Naked Bike Ride in London, on the 14th June, with over 1,000 mostly naked cyclists, in a protest against oil dependency, in favour of curbing car culture, and a celebration of body freedom. By riding nude, protesters demonstrate the vulnerability of cyclists on the streets (such as Marie Vesco, an activist killed on her bike on the 3rd June by a careless and callous driver). It also feels good! The World Naked Bike Ride is an international event, and this year there were rides in Brighton on the 7th June, Cardiff (for the first time), Edinburgh, York, Manchester, Sheffield and Southampton, as well as Barcelona and elsewhere. Spectators lined the whole route in London, which stretched from Hyde Park, past the Houses of Parliament (the best bit), central London and back to Marble Arch. Many cyclists were body painted, the sun was shining, and it was a great day all round. They even had a police escort, though clothed — it’s probably for the best. We here at the Bath Bomb look eagerly forward to next June for more of the same!

Newsbite: Bigging Up Japan

As we go to press, protesters will be kicking off in Hokkaido, Japan, against the 2008 G8 Summit. The G8 leaders of the world’s eight most industrialised nations meet every year to discuss how to pretend to save the poor masses from themselves, whilst fences are rattled and protesters are battered on the streets outside. This year won’t be any different — so far, journalists have already been denied at the border, and known local activists are being fitted up on suspect charges. But things are changing, and our noble leaders are getting nervous — with the military growth of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (the who?), and the political sous of South America and Asia, the rich, white west may soon be getting a taste of its own medicine. Yep, interesting times…

Theory Corner — Are All Cops Bastards?

‘All Coppers are Bastards’, we’ve heard it yelled on demos, but how much have we thought about what it means? Are they all bad people, hellbent on defending oppression and exploitation? Let’s look at the facts and find out! While getting turfed out of a temporary squatted social centre last year (which had been opened in Bath centre to provide a FreeShop and Xmas card-making workshops for locals during the festive season), the cop doing most of the evicting was falling over himself to come across as a good guy, apologising and making excuses, almost ashamed of what he was doing — and there are many like him. While most cops seem to be genuinely violent, unintelligent and obnoxious individuals, attracted to the abusable power and weaponry that come with the job, a small number do seem to be, well, almost human. So what of these nice people who have mysteriously ended up in uniform, do they also fall into the bastard category? I think the answer has to be no, many are bastards, but that is only one of the reasons we should view cops with contempt. While many an officer has delighted crowds of activists with macho violence and bigotry above and beyond the call of duty, even the ‘nice’ ones are bound to carry out orders they may disagree with. On numerous occasions, cops have been seen carrying out duties on the brink of tears, clearly horrified by what they are having to do — it is this, more than any other unpleasant tendency of the average cop that makes them so pathetic and dangerous. Let us not forget that many cops are bastards — nasty people in every sense of the word — but this cannot be true of them all. The problem is that they have all let themselves be bought by bigger, more violent bastards, the government. They are whores to the will of the state and must unquestioningly do its bidding, no matter how morally repugnant the task, and it is this, rather than the personality of the individual that means that, until they take off the uniform, cops — like so many others throughout history who have ‘just followed orders’ — will always be the enemies of freedom, justice and equality.

IOM: Good Guys, Really

On Thursday the 19th June, activists from Bristol No Borders and BAN once again continued their assault on the credibility of those sinister cartoon bad guys, the International Organisation for Migration; the Bath Bomb again sent some newshounds to get the scoop.

Being Refugee Week, the Pierian Centre near Stokes Croft had been holding a week of workshops and talks on the positive impacts that refugees and immigrants had made on British society, and Thursday’s invitation to the IOM was intended to be no different. It was only after the 8 Bristol No Borders folks set up the all day picket outside however, full of info about the IOM’s callous agenda, their deportation agency and PR work, and their management of monstrous concentration camps, like the detainment centres off the coast of Australia, that the event organisers soon realised in horror how they’d been duped. The IOM may set itself up as the friendly face of the border regime, but after a three-hour debate with the IOM rep, it was only a matter of time before he admitted that he saw humans as economic units to be exploited rather than living creatures. Lizard.

But free trade people trafficking is big business now, with offices open in Bristol, Leeds, Birmingham, London, Glasgow, Liverpool, and soon in Peterborough. Though in the office of the IOM in Damak, Nepal, on the 30th June, folks angry about the sell-off of 60,000 Bhutanese refugees to the west as cheap labour levelled the place with a double whammy bombing, but no injuries. That’s the spirit!

“The whole experience has been tough, but all the kind and strengthening words and wise thoughts from strangers made it much easier!” (Former Swedish Animal Rights Prisoner)

Welcome to the July 2008 edition of Spirit of Freedom. As a number of ELP supporters will be aware, ELP has traditionally dedicated our newsletters to fallen friends, who have either been killed or seriously injured as a result of their protest activities. For the past few months ELP hasn’t carried any dedication and we hoped that we would not have to dedicate another newsletter to a fallen friend again. However last month, ELP received the heartbreaking news about the death of Marie Vesco. Marie was a French activist living in England. She was involved with a number of groups including ‘Food Not Bombs’. On Wednesday the 4th of June 2008 Marie was cycling to the Carnival Against the Arms Trade when a Four Wheel Drive
vehicle (an SUV if your American) swerved across two lanes hitting Marie. A second vehicle then also hit Marie. Marie died instantly: she was just a few days away from her 20th birthday. Marie is remembered as a warm, loud, fun, vivacious figure with an infectious laugh that was always ready to help others. ELP understands that at least two Critical Mass cycle rides have already been dedicated to Marie. Likewise in memory of Marie ELP is dedicating this newsletter to her memory. The loss of Marie is a blow for the movement and our thoughts are with her family and friends.

Snuff Mills protestJuly 8th 2008
A protest organised by the Snuff Mills Action Group attracted a very healthy turnout last night despite adverse weather conditions. Around 250 people turned out to express their disgust at Bristol City Councils approval of a planning application to fell 27 trees in a conservation area.

Grove Wood on Blackberry Hill in Stapleton has been part of the hospital site since it was originally built to house French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars but was sold off at auction last year to Mr Hussain Jafari Najafabadi of Clifton for £39,000 as part of the Governments drive to sell off surplus state owned assets. The land forms part of the conservation area that runs from Eastville right through to Downend.

Mr Jafari has a record of planning violations (most of which have been granted retrospectively) and, it is alleged, has been heard to be bragging of his long term plan to turn the site into a hotel and conference centre. His business dealings are carried out under a number of aliases.

Shortly after purchasing the wood, the new landowner set about cutting down trees with impunity and sited a portakabin within sight of the main road, near the entrance to the Wood.

Bristol City council took no action and when he submitted a planning application to fell the trees lining the road, locals thought that conservation area status would probably limit health and safety work to pruning alone, given the massive impact on visual amenity that felling would have.

Bristol City Council granted the permission citing that the listed wall was being undermined, a sewer was affected and highway obstruction.

The protest last night was the first of its kind in the campaign to save Grove Woods and Snuff Mills Action Group Spokesman Steve Micklewright said:
“We want to know the real rationale behind this decision, we are very suspicious about what’s happened here and we want proper answers immediately”.

He went on to say
“Come on Bristol City Council, do your job and stop pandering to rogue developers.”

Camp for Climate Action: Great Rebel Raft Regatta update & newspaper launched

THE GREAT REBEL RAFT REGATTA UPDATE

RaftsTHE GREAT REBEL RAFT REGATTA UPDATE

Following a professional reconnaissance and Health and Safety test trip by boat last Wednesday, rebel rafters and experienced sailors gave the thumbs up for the water borne disobedience on the Mass Day of Action, August 9th. Launching with the tides and if the weather is not blowing a gale, the action was deemed totally do able and has the potential to be a spectacular success. The key will be in the number of rafts, the more rafts ( or anything that floats !) there are the more impossible it will be for the forces of darkness to stop the armada reaching it’s target. So start packing paddles, canoes, inflatables, rafts, dinghies, amphibious vehicles etc.. with your tent. Try to encourage any yacht or boat people, pirates or sailors you know to join in. All rebel rafters will be requited to attend a water safety workshop that will be run daily for the three
days leading up to the day of action, and will have to wear life jackets ( if you don’t have your own, these will be provided by the camp). A write up is available on the GRRR website.

Meanwhile many groups across the country are getting excited by the GRRR bug and planning to build rafts and get teams together. If your group has any news, pictures of rafts or ideas to share, then send it to the constantly updated news feed on www.thegrrr.net . For any further enquiries email: pirates@thegrrr.net

Published to inspire people to come to the camp it is filled with full pages images of last years events, portraits of hot climate campers, a stunning map of this years camp and texts that describe the politics of radical climate activism. If you would like copies to hand out in the street, festivals, drop off in cafe’s etc. contact distribution@climatecamp.org.uk with your address and how many you want, they will be sent out asap or ring Isa 07984158 108 to find out where you can pick some up. Support Sarah Whitehead

Sarah Whitehead is a committed vegan activist who has dedicated her life to saving animals and helping people. She worked tirelessly as a nurse whilst rescuing and rehoming abused and neglected animals, as well as campaigning against the notorious Huntingdon Life Sciences.

Sarah WhiteheadSarah Whitehead is a committed vegan activist who has dedicated her life to saving animals and helping people. She worked tirelessly as a nurse whilst rescuing and rehoming abused and neglected animals, as well as campaigning against the notorious Huntingdon Life Sciences. She is not someone to sit back and let animals be tortured and abused, she stands up and fights wherever she sees injustice and never puts herself first.

Sarah had been informed about an abused beagle. It was living outside in a wooden cage, and was muzzled at all times except for when it got to eat. The dog was made to wear an electric shock collar and the neighbours informed Sarah that they had witnessed beatings from its owners. The neighbours had also heard the dog screaming on many occasions.

The RSPCA had been called numerous times, but they failed to help this dog and left it with owners who had on occasions tied it to a radiator.

All avenues had been explored in trying to lift this animal from hell. The RSPCA, despite numerous complaints and visits to the owners, did nothing; even the police had been called by neighbours, but they just told them to call the RSPCA.

What else was Sarah to do, but rescue the beagle herself? How else could this beagle be saved? Knowing how much it was suffering, could anyone just leave this beagle to live in pain?

Sarah was already on a suspended sentence for rescuing animals from a notorious puppy farmer in West Sussex, which meant that if she re-offended within two years she would be sent to prison for that “crime”. Even knowing this risk to her freedom, Sarah put the dog’s life and well-being first and lifted him to freedom.

Unknown to Sarah she was under police surveillance during the rescue as part of Operation Achilles and the campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences. Police followed her and watched her rescue the beagle, and then watched her take the dog to its second stage of its journey to it’s new home.

However, once the beagle was handed over, instead of following the beagle in order to return it to its owner, they carried on following Sarah. Luckily this means that the beagle is still safe and living in a loving home.

Some time later once the police had finished following Sarah around she was arrested, the police weirdly tried to accuse her of stealing the dog so that she could sell it for £500 to raise money for SHAC (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty) Where this sum of £500 came from is anyone’s guess and it shows how little the police understand the concept of animal rights!

Sarah went on trial for burglary in June 2008. She pleaded not guilty to the offence as she believed she had not committed a crime in rescuing this beagle. She told the court she believed she had acted reasonably and honest and that it was the right thing to do because the police and RSPCA had failed to save this dog. Statements from the neighbours were read in court which described the cruelty to the dog, the beatings, and the screams but bizarrely the jury took the view that Sarah should have left the dog where it was and she was found guilty.

The judge sentenced Sarah to two years in prison, nine months of this is from the suspended sentence she was on, and the extra 1 1/3 years is for rescuing the beagle.
