On the Ground Ireland: Day four, the Monday picket, video and report

Fears on early Monday morning. Rats. Big ones. Perhaps Bertie Ahern and his corporate buddies had stormed the camp, attempted to make a profit nest under the communal bender and, as usual, couldn’t agree on anything and began squabbling, squawking and squeaking, clawing out each others eyeballs.

The early morning picket saw people gathering again outside the main gates of the construction site again, this time at 7.30am.

The Garda were out in early, two vans, several patrol cars and an unmarked blue car full of grinning senior officers, who drove up and down the road all morning.

30 to 40 protestors picketed the trucks, cars and buses bringing in the workers. But the Shell contracted workforce was now minus five, according to local people. Five more workers quit after the Friday morning protest.

The picket lasted several hours, including a tea-break at the Shell-to-Sea information hut. Then the “musicians” decided to give the workers a little scare, and send the message the protest to this pipeline and gas terminal was not going away. They ran to the front gate and fence and used sticks to hammer out as much noise as they could muster until the only remaining police van drove up out front. The musical protestors retreated back to the information centre and then took up perch opposite the main entrance again and hammered out beats on drums and barrels.

For now, there seems no real retaliation from the Garda. There was a little pointless shoving of several of the known local members, but it amounted to nothing.

The Oxford Mail reports that Anthony Bailey was arrested for possible trespass when being evicted from a camp where npower wish to destroy a wildlife site with sulphur rich power station ash. They also report that he has a broken arm.
Unreported are stories that he broke both arms in 2 places and nearly died in Abingdon police station. Details not known but apparently he was kept in an interview room for some 9 hours with nothing happening.
Also the police are reportedly guarding him in the John Radcliffe hospital and demanding the names of all his visitors.
The alleged trespass was in open/wooded ground near the lakes and not in any private house or building.

The Oxford Mail reported last night that a protester has been arrested at the Radley Lakes site after workers started preparing the area for the controversial dumping of power station ash.

“The Ant” as the man is know, had set up camp outside the Thrupp Lake. He went into the area owned by RWE npower after workmen began clearing trees today and was arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass.

Radley Latest

17.02.2007
Work has begun in earnest now, with most of the trees on the islands cut down.
NPower’s lawers have also issued an injunction, served on 6 named individuals, plus anyone else they can manage to serve one on down there, pretty much curtailing most of your civil liberties in that area.
This includes taking photgraphs of “protected individuals” (guys with chainsaws and security guards), setting up any camp within a half mile radius of the lake, carrying equipment that could be used to set up tripods, or spike trees, protesting within 5 yards of a “protected individual”…
Apparently, the security guards were feeling harrased.
So- careful not to breath too heavily either- you might end up getting nicked for that too.
So far 3 people have been arrested in the latest wave of the protest- 1 in breach of the injunction (for daring to take photos on a public highway!).
Camps will be demolished after 6 hours, and Camp Kylie, previously home to “The Ant” was demolished in the wee small hours of the morning (no arrests, as there were no longer any occupants, as they’d all been nicked!)

Suggested action- go down there, bear witness, and I leave it up to you as to whether or not you take any notice of this injunction.
I didn’t!

background & update

RWE NPower have gone to great expense to try and gag the local press, TV and
even Radio, to prevent the news getting out there that they are trashing
Thrupp Lake and cutting down hundreds of trees, causing distress to the
nesting birds and causing pain to the local residents who have made an
application to have the place classed as a Town Green.

It all started when NPower evicted a group of people who decided to occupy
the house called Sandles which had remained unoccupied for 18 months. They
went in on the 6th Feb with a team of thuggish individuals with faces hid by
balaclavas and sledgehammered their way through a plate glass window to gain
access to the house. Two girls sleeping next to the window were traumatised
and lucky not to have been injured by the flying shards of glass.

After they had evicted the occupants, the security guards, still with their
balaclavas decided to film anyone and everyone who came near the lakes.
Filming vehicle registration numbers and eavesdropping on conversations,
they were carrying out their patrols with gusto, disturbing the wildlife all
through the night during their regular passes and being intimidating to
people who were visiting the area.

A young man called Ant decided on eviction to do a vigil outside the house.
First of all for two days he sat on a chair. Then someone gave him a tent
and brought him some provisions. It seemed an act of kindness for someone
who felt that a protest had to be made. However, the continued stream of
people who supported Ant seemed to aggravate the NPOWER GOONS and soon
NPower obtained some sort of Court Order to stop anyone camping near their
property, carrying a rope or spike within a mile of the site, photographing
their workmen and security guards, and demanding that the people against who
the injunction was served should send a copy of the injunction which they
had received to everyone who supported the Campaign to Save the Lakes.

One of the people named on the injunction is a retired scientist who is
extremely law abiding and is at a loss to understand why his name should
appear on this paperwork. He did have an altercation with a Security Guard
who refused to let him pass down Thrupp Lane BOAT (Byway open to all
Traffic) saying it was a ByWay and he couldn’t drive his vehicle down it.

Anyone who visits the lakes is likely to be followed round by a pair of
burly security guards who are looking for the opportunity to have a
confrontation. Someone visited this morning and reported his path barred by
three security men from NPower, threatening that if he tried to go past
them, he was in breach of the “injunction” and they would have him arrested
because no one is allowed within 5 feet of a Security Guard or NPower’s
property.

Activists shut down construction of LNG gas terminal in Milford Haven

14th Feb 07

Protesters against the continued and unrestrained promotion of fossil fuel projects by the UK government have blockaded the main vehicle access route into the new LNG pipeline terminal near Milford Haven, South Wales. Their aim is to highlight the serious environmental and safety issues surrounding this project, and to call for a more sober approach to the impending energy crisis.

Construction traffic prevented from entering LNG terminal14th Feb 07

Protesters against the continued and unrestrained promotion of fossil fuel projects by the UK government have blockaded the main vehicle access route into the new LNG pipeline terminal near Milford Haven, South Wales. Their aim is to highlight the serious environmental and safety issues surrounding this project, and to call for a more sober approach to the impending energy crisis.

Eight people have physically blocked the site access road, south of the village of Herbranston, S. Wales, preventing construction vehicles from entering the giant LNG terminal.

These protestors, inspired by the 2006 Camp for Climate Action, are targetting the construction of the Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) terminal and pipeline in South Wales. The actions aim to disrupt the work to the largest extent possible. Climate chaos is the greatest threat humanity has ever faced yet the British government and a conglomerate of Corporations are recklessly constructing this new carbon intensive energy project.

The development of LNG terminals in the UK is locking us into thirty years of yet more fossil fuels, in an era in which dramatic cuts in carbon are crucial. The Department of Trade Industry last week, gave permission for phase two of the LNG pipeline to be built. Yet, this project starkly reveals the incompatibility between the so-called need for ‘energy security’, and the far more pressing need to substantially diminish our use of fossil fuels.

Limiting global warming to a 2 degree increase with a relatively high certainty requires the equivalent concentration of CO2 to stay below 400 ppm. Achieving this means rich countries, like the UK, cutting their average emissions by around 90% by 2030.

A protestor said “A 90% cut in 25 years is going to require not just new technologies, but different cultures, different economies, different expectations – in short, a different way of life.”

The development of LNG terminals in the UK opens up previously unavailable carbon intensive natural gas to our energy markets, to the severe detriment of support for clean decentralised renewables. Furthermore, bringing gas from the Middle East is a much more energy intensive process than retrieving gas from the North Sea.

There are also substantial safety issues attached to this project. Studies show that an accident or terrorist attack at the Milford Haven terminals would cause “major injuries and significant damage to structures” within a radius of a third of a mile and could cause second-degree burns more than a mile away.

The terrain through which the pipeline will run has been extensively mined and is prone to subsidence in places. Needless to say, the installation of a massively pressurised gas pipeline through unstable land is highly dubious. Locals, fearing for their safety, have had their questions ignored. Concerns about the material used and quality of welding employed have not been properly addressed. Many members of affected communities continue to vocally protest, but with little recognition.

Protestors have chosen to take direct action today to show their solidarity with communities along the pipeline and to stop this morally indefensible fossil fuel de-struction project.

Notes to Editor

The project:
Gas, liquefied in Qatar by cooling to -162C, is going to be shipped to West Wales on super tankers. There, at Milford Haven, it will be regasified in one of the two onshore terminals being built by:
· Dragon LNG, a consortium whose main partner is the BG Group (formerly British Gas).
· South Hook LNG, part of a new business, Qatargas II,owned by Qatar Petroleum and Exxon. This £6 billion project finances the work from well to terminal. It is the single largest energy-project financing ever[1] and this terminal alone will be the biggest LNG receiving terminal in the world[2].
The Pipeline: National Grid are connecting the gas to the national network. They are doing so by building a pipeline in two phases from Milford Haven to Gloucestershire. Phase 2 of the project was given the green light on 7th February 2007. This huge pipeline, 4ft in diameter, will run at 94bar pressure – that is 96kg/cm2.
National Grid’s (formerly known as Transco) Safety Record
In 1999, a family of four were killed in Scotland when a high pressure gas pipe exploded by their home. Massive corrosion in the pipeline, and a failure on the part of National Grid/Transco (NG/T) to keep adequate records on what kind of pipes were being used, led to the explosion. Corrosion has already been seen on the welds in the South Wales pipeline
Since privatisation, NG/T have shed thousands of engineering jobs and cut maintenance work. In 2000 it was revealed that Transco had underspent its agreed pipeline maintenance and replacement programme by £358m over the previous two years[3]. This same corporation, accountable to only its shareholders and board, is now responsible for the safety of thousands of people along the route of this pipe, which is run at a pressure, unprecedented in Europe and US, of which National Grid have no experience of running. Already, there is evidence of their cost saving strategy: the Health and Safety Executive stipulates the use of polyethelene in gas piping, yet National Grid is using other materials.

[1] The agreement was the third-largest project financing of any kind, after the Channel Tunnel and a Taiwanese high-speed rail financing. Banks with major roles in the project financing include HSBC, Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland and Citigroup.

===================================================================
ACTION REPORT

Since November there has been lots of protests around the gas pipeline currently being constructed in Wales, and shortly Englans. Today people paid a visit to sunny pembokeshire to take direct action on one of the root causes of climate change; fossil fuel corporations seeking more profits for their shareholders.

Five people blockaded the main access to the construction site for six hours, resulting in huge tailbacks and the typical enormous police presence. People laid on the ground are apparently a threat to national security. What really is a threat to our security is the continuation of yet more fossil fuel projects, more carbon in the atmosphere and more death, misery and hunger. The people were eventually arrested at midday and are now enjoying a well deserved sleep in the luxurious surroundings of HaverfordWest Police station.

Around the same time this morning people also approached the kilometer long jetty, which will carry the liquid from the supertankers to the terminal. They were prevented from getting on to the jetty; apparently it’s dangerous unless you have been given health and safety training. Lets hope the people of Milford Haven have been given some training for what to do if there is accident. Milford Haven’s most experienced shipping pilots have described the risk of a fatal collision at one of the terminals as a ‘real everyday reality’ which would put 20000 people lives at risk.

Just twenty people have managed to cause a splendid commotion at the building site of the South Hook Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in West Wales. It is an inspiring example of how a few people can take responsibility for theirs and our future.

While work may continue tomorrow on the terminal, yet another spanner has been thrown in their LNG pipedream (I had to have one pipe pun).

Npower uses Thugs to Evict Radley Lakes Environmental Activists

At approx 5am Tuesday 6th February 12 bailiffs dressed from head to foot in black and wearing balaclavas without warning smashed through the window of the occupied npower property showering sleeping activist in glass. They then proceeded to cut the air supply to a fortified bunker without checking if it was occupied, smash there way into a fortified loft without checking that the occupant Dave was safe. Not long after this they climbed onto the scaffold tower positioned on the garage roof and topped with a wooden box containing a 45 gallon concrete lock. Chris who was in the box at the time said they climbed on top of the box and started to rock the tower before breaking in with sledge hammers. Veteran road protester Muppet Dave said ‘it was one of the most dangerous eviction he had experienced and that it was only luck that nobody was seriously hurt’.

Veteran road protester Muppet Dave said ‘it was one of the most dangerous eviction he had experienced and that it was only luck that nobody was seriously hurt’.

Two activists were arrested and one subsequently de-arrested and Chris is due in Didcot Magistrates Court on Thursday 15th charged with obstruction of the Bailiffs. Shortly afterwards npower swiftly cordoned of the lakes despite a ongoing legal challenge by the local “Save Radley Lakes” group for it to be recognised as common land.

The property was occupied with the intention of creating a field centre to raise awareness and prevent these beautiful lakes being in filled with toxic ash from the burning of coal at the German owned RWE npower Didcot power station. However, despite massive support from the local community, where there is overwhelming opposition to npower’s plans, and nearby environmental groups it soon became clear that npower were having non of it, so we decide to oppose the repossession and dig in. This decision instantly created more media interest embarrassing npower and undermining their greenwash and it was probably for this reason that they decide to disregard the safety of individuals and send in the heavies. We are no seeking to take legal action against Shercurity Ltd for the lack of health and safety procedure and endangerment of life. However, we fully intend to continue our campaign to save the lakes and against RWE npower for both local and global pollution of the planet.

Climate campers are at it again! More than seventy people from around the UK met in Leeds in January and decided to organise another Camp for Climate Action this summer from 14th to 21st August. As many of you know, for ten days last August hundreds of people gathered in the shadow of Drax coal-fired power station in Yorkshire to share knowledge and inspiration to tackle the greatest threat to life on Earth, live an example of more just and sustainable alternatives, and confront one of the UK’s biggest polluters in a day of mass direct action.

Following on from this success, Camp for Climate Action 2007 will take place near to a target relating to aviation or the coal or oil industries. The location will be chosen over the coming months. Organising outreach,
fundraising, site practicalities and workshops is underway. Self managed camping, eating and living neighbourhoods around themes and geographical areas are also being planned, contact details are on the website.

There is loads to do, and everyone is invited to get involved – no experience necessary! The next national planning meetings will be held in Leeds at the Common Place, on the 17th and 18th February, and then in
Bristol on the 17th and 18th March.

See www.climatecamp.org.uk for more info. There are lots of ways to get involved without coming to national gatherings, but coming to them is a great way of really feeling part of the whole process, we work with consensus decision making and collective responsibility, everyone gets their say in how the whole thing goes.

Protests at Irish embassy in London against Shell’s hell in north west Ireland

30.01.2007

At midday today, while a samba band played below, a man who wished to be known as “G” climed the Irish embassy. This was in protest over the Irish governments collusioin with Shell’s activities in North West Ireland where they are constructing a pipeline and refinery. Many campaigners claim this pipeline and refinery pose as serious environmental risk. While there have been widespread protests in Ireland itself many claim that the government of Ireland has given Shell suspiciously favourable business terms on the deal. “G” was arrested for on suspicion of criminal damage though there was no damage visible from ground level. Press Release

Today, supporters for the Anti-Shell Campaign took their protest to the Irish Embassy. The action was to target the Irish State; Shell; Statoil and Marathon who are attempting to construct a dangerous and experimental onshore raw gas pipeline and refinery in County Mayo; a beautiful remote part of North West Ireland.

There is massive opposition to this proposed pipeline by the local community, Ireland and internationally. A campaign of direct action against this plan has been ongoing since 2005.

The action at the Embassy today is to demonstrate that this polluting project will not just affect the area in which it is to be built, but will contribute to the ongoing organised destruction of the planet by Shell. The action is in solidarity with the people directly affected by this unprecedented raw gas pipeline, which has been condemned as posing an unacceptable risk to health and safety.

The Irish State actively encourages the Shell led consortium – Norwegian owned Statoil and U.S. owned Marathon – by facilitating stages of the construction project, including the changing of laws to allow the project go ahead. These companies are tax exempt, thus there is no financial benefit to the Irish people. Shell are also deploying hundreds of police, who daily intimidate people and use violence to deter them, especially at recent demonstrations.

The action at the Embassy today is to show the concern which many people share about the corruption and complicity of the Irish Dáil, using its power to sell out the interests of the Irish people, putting personal profit before public interest, safety and health.
