Despite repeated assaults by frustrated and increasingly violent Japanese whalers, the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin continues to stand guard behind the Japanese floating abattoir called the Nisshin Maru. The three Japanese harpoon boats are not in the area but the Sea Shepherd crew is prepared to obstruct them should they return.

The Japanese have been accusing Sea Shepherd of trying to obstruct their props with ropes yet the whalers have been trying to do the same thing to the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin. They are accusing the Sea Shepherd crew of throwing rotten butter (which the Japanese refer to as “acid”) at them yet the whalers are throwing golf balls and chunks of metal at the Steve Irwin crew. In addition, the Japanese are blasting the Sea Shepherd crew with water cannons and Long Range Acoustical weapons — a sonic gun that causes disorientation, nausea and deafness.

“I find it interesting that so called experts and politicians are quick to condemn Sea Shepherd’s tactics for upholding conservation law yet say not a word about the escalating physical violence directed at us by the whalers who are breaking the law,” said Captain Paul Watson. “Their position of siding with the poachers seems to be that if we did not put ourselves in this situation we would not be experiencing such violence. The same could be said for any policeman and Sea Shepherd is not down here to protest whaling, we are down here to obstruct illegal whaling as defined under international conservation law. We are down here to enforce the law, not to break it.”

There is a legal precedent for Sea Shepherd’s intervention and that is the United Nation World Charter for Nature that allows for non-governmental organizations to uphold international conservation law and in Section 21(e) specifically in areas beyond national jurisdictions.

The Japanese whale poachers have the advantage of superior ships, faster, more powerful ships, they have weapons and they have the support of their government that will defend whatever actions they take including the killing of our crew if that should occur.
On February 6th, two incidents occurred where the Steve Irwin collided with harpoon vessels as they forced their way past the Steve Irwin’s blockade in their pursuit of their poaching activities. These collisions were not intentional on the part of Sea Shepherd.

“Earlier we filmed a whale being illegally killed and we watched as that whale endured an agonizing death, thrashing about in its own blood for twenty-five minutes,” said Captain Watson. “We view the killing of that whale as cold blooded murder and we are committed to doing everything we can, short of inflicting injuries ourselves, to protect these defenceless, gentle, intelligent and socially complex sentient beings.”

The harpoon boats have not returned to the Nisshin Maru since the last incident occurred at 1800 Hours on February 6th.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has made it clear to the government of Australia that our interventions which are becoming increasingly more dangerous because of Japanese aggression can be avoided by Peter Garrett and Kevin Rudd simply making good on their pre-election promise to take the Japanese whalers to court.

“Because Garrett and Rudd have reneged on their promises to us, the people of Australia, we have been forced to defend these whales as Australian citizens in these hostile and remote waters simply because someone has to,” said Andrew Perry of Hobart, Tasmania.

Steve Irwin Suffers Second Collision with the Japanese Fleet

Operation Musashi
Update from the Ross Sea

At 1800 Hours the harpoon vessels Yushin Maru No. 1 and the Yushin Maru No.3 decided to run the Sea Shepherd blockade to transfer two dead whales to the flensing deck of the Nisshin Maru. The Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin was blocking the slipway to prevent the transfer in order to shut down the illegal Japanese whaling operations.

As the Nisshin Maru attempted to hook onto the dead whale, the Steve Irwin and the Yushin Maru No.3 collided with the forward starboard side of the Steve Irwin and the port stern side of the harpoon vessel coming together.

“We told them to not continue their illegal whaling operations and that we would be blocking the stern slipway of the factory ship,” said Captain Paul Watson. “They decided to test our resolve and apparently expected us to retreat when they charged in ahead of us to make the transfer.”

Captain Watson said that the Steve Irwin became difficult to control under a barrage of metal objects, blasts from the water cannons, and the disorientation caused by the LRAD acoustic weapons that the whalers were using on the conservationists.

“I was dazed by the sonic blasts being used on us at close range.” said Captain Watson. “I have to admit it was difficult to concentrate with that devise being focused on us.”

“I’ve never felt anything quite like it,” said Emily Hunter from Toronto, Canada. “It penetrates the body and you can feel your muscles vibrating. It made me dizzy and left me somewhat dazed.”

The Steve Irwin suffered no noticeable damage from the collision and no one was seriously injured. A few of the Sea Shepherd crew were struck by golf balls and pieces of metal. The crew of the Steve Irwin were unable to determine if there was any damage done to the harpoon hunter killer boat.

The two whales were transferred after the Steve Irwin shut down the operations of the fleet for twelve hours.

“We are trying to make this as difficult as possible for them to continue their illegal activities, “said Molly Kendall from Adelaide, South Australia. “It is difficult to see them murdering these whales and we are determined to do everything we possibly can to stop this horrific slaughter.”

The Steve Irwin remains on the tail of the Nisshin Maru to attempt to obstruct any further transfers in an effort to stop the unlawful poaching of the whales by the Japanese whaling fleet.

“I wish we did not have to be down here in this dangerous situation,” said Captain Watson. “I’ve said repeatedly that if Australia or New Zealand would agree to take Japan to the international court on this than we would back off. Because international law is not being enforced, we have no choice but to do what we can with the resources available to us to defend these endangered whales in this established international whale sanctuary.”

The Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin collided with the Yushin Maru #2 this morning as the harpoon vessel moved in to block the Steve Irwin’s attempt to prevent the transfer of a dead whale up the slipway of the Nisshin Maru.

“We were in the process of blocking the transfer from the Yushin Maru #2 when the Yushin Maru #1 moved directly in front of the bow to block us,” said Captain Watson. “I could not turn to starboard without hitting the Yushin Maru #1. I tried to back down but the movement of the Yushin Maru #2 made the collision unavoidable.”

The Yushin Maru #2 was transferring a 2nd whale killed this morning.

“The whalers have decided to test our resolve,” said 1st Officer Peter Hammarstedt. “They have escalated this battle to see just how determined we are to protect these whales. We’re shepherds and we will do what we can to protect our flock from these murderous poachers.”

The Yushin Maru #3 has also killed a whale but is unable to approach the factory ship because the Steve Irwin is now guarding the slipway.

The Sea Shepherd crew intend to hold this position to prevent the transfer.

Full communique released from ELF action at university“Complete communique of the action of January 29:

In the early morning of January 29, the submissive firefighters in Mexico City (D.F.) quelled a fire within the premises of the College of Sciences and Humanities south campus (CCH Sur) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). There a machine which destroys the Earth was left forever unusable, and the administration offices of the campus were burned.

The Frente de Liberación de la Tierra (ELF) claimed this attack through a contact; we were informed that the university had been destroying a large part of the ecological reserve where a so-called ‘education’ center is being built, several varieties of trees and diverse plants were cut down, considered to be in the way of their ability to expand their facilities, and their mastery over nature; the progress and education that they extol in their classrooms is always based on domination and anthropocentrism. In this act by the UNAM, it is more than clear that not only do they wish to dominate and mold the minds of students, they also seek to expand the same control over the land and the animals that inhabit her. That’s why the destructive machine was burned, and why we also decided to set a fire on campus, now an indisputable part of the ecocide that education implements, which only wants to produce people who are submissive to authority and power; they create beings who are unable to think and act for themselves and are only educated to produce and consume.

The mass media of miscommunication, which hid the machine which had been burned, only now announced that part of the administrative offices had been burned, and that this had been caused by Porro (shock groups) [groups organized to discredit student movements]; we want to make clear that the ELF/FLT is not composed of such people, who are sent by their bosses to do absurd and meaningless things; our reasons are clear, as we struggle for total liberation (animal, land and human), and if anything blocks us we will face it until its complete destruction and elimination.

We know that the estimated damage of this action was thousands of pesos, but still we are not satisfied with that, and we will continue making war on all that oppresses us and will not allow us all to be happy– us, animals and the land.

This was just a little message, for those who profit at the expense of the destruction and domination of the ecosystem.

Group out in force for the final days of the shooting season + arrest report.

A quick report from Gloucestershire and Cotswold hunt sabs from the fields on the last Saturday before the end of the Pheasant shooting season.

4.02.2009
A quick report from Gloucestershire and Cotswold hunt sabs from the fields on the last Saturday before the end of the Pheasant shooting season.

On our last walking expedition through the beautiful Cotswold two weeks ago our small group of four came into some trouble with some of the security from the Brimpsfield park estate our small group of four were pushed around and shoved until we left the public footpath which was clearly marked on the map. Apparently it is fine to assault those who use a public right of way in the countryside if shooters are having a fun day’s massacre. The attitude of those who provide security for the Brimpsfield Park shooting is far from legal, they openly admit on camera they know where we live and will be paying us a visit, the shooters have ON camera refused to break gun, leaving activists with temporary deafness as chambers are emptied within inches of the heads of the sabs.

Saturday 31st Jan saw two land rovers packed with sabs stop five shooters during a rough shoot in the Cotswolds, after deciding to move onto a driven shoot in the area our land rovers were stopped by around 10 police vehicles and the while the drivers were being questioned by police all sabs went for a nice walk along the footpaths for a stroll. Unfortunately although the drivers and vehicles were released by police they were followed by the yokels who pulled in front of the vehicles and called the police where two activists were arrested for an apparent Aggravated trespass and Section 5 Public order for causing someone to be harassed alarmed and distressed.

One of the beaters made a statement saying that the two (one male, one female) had already been told to leave the land for three months by the police back in November, and that they had caused him to feel alarmed, harassed or distressed. They probably can’t decide which of those three things they are as they are still looking in the “word meanins book” (dictionary) so they can check the definitions.

Needless to say, we will be back for the new season and will continue to fight these animal abusers in our area until every last gun is silenced. Whilst preparing for the new season we will be out with our other local fox hunts helping to protect our wildlife.

Sound weapons used against anti-whaling protestors

The Japanese whaling ships have been jamming Sea Shepherd communications and have been deploying a long range acoustic weapon device to repel Sea Shepherd boats. The sound waves cause disorientation and nausea.

The deployment of military weapon systems in the Antarctic Treaty Zone is a violation of international law. The whalers are becoming increasingly violent in defense of their illegal activities.

“It is a very dramatic scene out here as ships zig zag back and forth in thick ice and heavy swells,” said Captain Paul Watson. “The whalers are deploying water cannons, concussion grenades, acoustic weapons, and throwing solid brass and lead balls at Sea Shepherd crewmembers. If we were to do any of the things these thugs are doing, we would be denounced as eco-terrorists. There certainly is a double standard where whale killers can use violence without fear of condemnation from their government and we can’t even defend ourselves without condemnation from our governments. What is important however is that despite the violence from the whalers, no whales are being killed. They can’t get away from us and if we keep on their tail they can’t kill whales.”

Sea Shepherd water-cannoned
A crewmember from the Steve Irwin was slightly injured after being struck by a high pressure water cannon fired from the Japanese whaling factory ship Nisshin Maru. One of the cameramen on one of the Steve Irwin’s inflatable boats was cut and bruised above the eye when a high pressure blast of water knocked him off his feet while he was filming.

A second crew member was also injured in the confrontation with the whalers. Laurens De Groot of the Netherlands was slightly injured when struck in the face by a metal ball thrown by whalers. Whalers onboard the Yushin Maru #3 threw solid brass and lead balls at crewmembers on one of the Steve Irwin’s inflatable boats.

The Sea Shepherd crew also discovered that the Japanese whaling fleet is deploying a new weapon in defence of their illegal whaling activities.

The factory ship the Nisshin Maru and the two harpoon vessels in the fleet are equipped with Long Range Acoustical Devices (LRAD). This is a military grade weapon system that sends out mid to high frequency sound waves designed to disorient and possibly incapacitate personnel. It is basically an anti-personnel weapons system.

The Steve Irwin has been chasing the Japanese whaling fleet for twenty-four hours at high speed through scattered ice fields and changing weather conditions for over three hundred miles westward across the top of the Ross Sea.

At 0500 Hours (Sydney Time) the Steve Irwin deployed two fast inflatable boats and a helicopter to harass the fleet and to hurry them along. Sea Shepherd’s strategy is to keep the whaling fleet on the move. If they are running they are not killing whales and no whales have been killed during the last 24 hours. In fact the Steve Irwin crew were excited to see Fin whales swimming alongside the ship as they pursued the whaling fleet.

The Japanese harpoon vessels have been maneuvering very close to the Steve Irwin to intimidate and to try and lead the Sea Shepherd ship away from the Nisshin Maru. The confrontation that began in clear weather in dense ice and heavy swells became increasing treacherous as fog and blizzard conditions moved in around 0900 Hours.

The Steve Irwin crew retreated when within range of the acoustic weapons.

“All we need to do is to keep them running and to keep them from whaling and that is exactly what we are doing. It is proving to be a very successful day,” said Captain Paul Watson.

Weather conditions are becoming increasing worse with heavy snow, fog, increasing swells and denser ice conditions.

Looking Back At A Busy Year

2009 promises to be a busy year for BAN and friends, but before we look forward, let’s look take a look back at 2008. The year started with a continuing spate of foie gras, forcing the sick dish off the menus of many a restaurant. The FreeShop went from strength to strength, distributing goods to thousands of satisfied anti-shoppers and spreading its monthly anti-consumerist (2nd Saturday of each month, 12–3pm, Stall Street, opposite Holland and Barrett). In a new twist, BANners also distributed free ethical, eco-friendly vegan food to hungry passersby at the ‘There is such thing as a free lunch!’ stall. Punters of the Porter were kept entertained at ‘Bubbling Under’, Bath’s ongoing free monthly radical film showings. Members of BAN also helped open ‘The 78’, Chippenham’s first squatted social centre, and joined dozens in Bristol to resist the eviction of ‘Ashley Road’.

Bath’s animals rights advocates have been equally busy, demoing Bath racecourse during a visit by Rolf Harris, travelling to Oxford Uni and Huntingdon for anti-vivisection events, sabotaging local fox hunts, travelling to Cardiff for an anti-badger cull demo and feeding hundreds at the first Bath Vegan Fayre. Bath activists also spent a fair bit of time in Bristol, helping organise the Bristol Anarchist Bookfair, several days of credit crunch-related workshops, the first Bristol Anarchist Games Day (highly recommended!) and also helped organise anti-capitalist demos around the opening of the monstrous Cabot Circus shopping centre, which was invaded by zombie protesters. Getting active for the environment, BAN joined 3,000 others at Kingsnorth Camp for Climate Action, helping to seize the site, and causing serious disruption to the coal plant by scaling the perimeter fence. Earlier in the year, members of BAN joined others from Bristol, Oxford and Wales to successfully blockade Aberthaw coal-fired power plant, whilst more recently, another BANner helped out at the Plane Stupid blockade at Stansted. We were also busy with No Borders/pro-asylum seeker events, like the anti-IOM demos in Bristol and ID cards protest at Cardiff, and joined the anarchist ‘Freedom of Movement’ bloc and 5,000 others at the Manchester anti-Labour Party Conference.

We’ve teamed up with Bath Mad Hatters to highlight the dangerous effects of forced medication, and our new pedal-powered sound system is justin about ready to go, after a year of hard work. Fascists failed to escape our attention, with local activists heading up north to oppose and confront the BNP’s annual Red, White and Blue festival (due to this year’s disruption, it is unlikely to happen again). Combined events and forces helped to delay the opening of Bathwick Hill Tesco for nearly a year, and BAN were there to greet them when they arrived. BANners celebrated Buy Nothing Day, and twice journeyed down to Brighton to join the ‘Smash EDO/ITT’ demos, aimed at closing down a weapons factory supplying genocidal states such as Israel and the US of A; after the demos (both of which got a bit ‘rioty’) and a four-year campaign, the factory is on its last legs – don’t miss the next demo on 04/05/09: www.smashedo.org.uk. BAN also launched its anti-credit crunch campaign, aimed at defending our communities against unemployment, bailiffs, corporate greed and recession. The campaign kick-started with a 35-strong, noisy demo in November and will continue on as recession deepens, with a focus on practically resisting recession and directly defending our rights and livelihoods. And we even managed well-earned group holidays at Tolpuddle festival and the beautiful Gower, too!

Opposition Increases As Attacks Intensify

On Saturday 3rd January, 400–500 gathered in Bristol to oppose the continued Israeli attacks on Palestine. The march, attended by young and old, anarchists, students, Muslims and socialists alike, took place on the afternoon of the day that Israel was reported to have begun its land incursion in Palestine. The demonstration coincided with various others around the country, and indeed around the world, including a 50,000-strong march in London. The following weekend 100,000 people attended a march in London in opposition to the continued devastating attacks which have since included the bombing of a school being used as a shelter for civilians, in which more than 40 people were killed. The IDF have also dropped leaflets over Gaza threatening to increase the ferocity of their attacks. In the five years that preceded the recent attacks, around 5,000 Palestinians are reported to have been killed by the Israelis’ advanced weaponry. In spite of the British Government’s renewed call for ceasefire, figures reported in the Guardian in 2006 tell a different story: the Government approved £22.5m of weaponry exports to Israel in the previous year. If you would like to get involved in opposing the attacks, there is a vigil in Bath every Saturday outside the Abbey between 11.30 and 12.30. In Bristol, there is a vigil every night at 5pm in the centre, opposite the Hippodrome, and Bristol’s also home to the ‘Raytheon Out’ campaign, who are now in the fifth week of their rooftop occupation of that arms manufacturer. And let’s not forget neighbouring deathdealers Boeing, who recently found all their windows smashed! In Frome too, 40 people recently occupied Lloyds TSB, who have ridiculously closed the account of human rights charity InterPal. Other corporate nasties with ties to Israel include M&S and Starbucks, and be sure to boycott Israeli supermarket goods, where many peppers, sweet potatoes and avocados are grown on stolen land.

Bash Back Against Bath’s Bastard Bailiffs!

Recent articles in the Chronicle have starkly contradicted assertions by government and academic think tanks that Bath would “weather the worst effects of the recession.” At the last count, 1,542 people are claiming benefits in the Bath area, an increase of 59% on last year, with 600 people having lost their jobs in the city since last November — a dramatic rise. And how are we rewarded when we’re laid off and forced onto the dole? Do we enter a nurturing welfare system that caters for the needs and skills of the unemployed? No, it’s more authoritarian than ever — benefits have not risen with the increasing cost of living, and claimants are harassed into searching for non-existent jobs under the constant threat of benefit stoppage for failure to conform to the infuriatingly bureaucratic world of Jobseekers. As a direct result of this and the rise in bills, food and living costs, Bath residents are seeing a lot more of everyone’s least favourite parasite, the bailiff. Recent figures show that bailiffs chasing unpaid council tax visited 2,400 homes in Bath last year. With three/four people in the average household, that means that 8,000 (10% of Bath’s population) were visited for council tax alone! When we take into consideration bailiffs sent out by banks, loan companies and energy suppliers, we can realistically increase the number of Bathonians being harassed several times over. At this point the old reactionary cry that people who are unemployed or bailiff-ridden are ‘layabouts’ who have ‘brought it on themselves’ simply no longer holds true. The majority of us are now feeling the pinch, some harder than others, and it’s simply not our fault. If your boss fires you and the job market is empty, what choice is there but benefits? If you were going to pay your council tax, but had to spend the money on the 40% gas and electric bill increase and feeding your family, what would you do?

Bailiffs are famed for their ruthlessness — a recent court case tells of a bailiff who posed as an ambulance driver to gain entry to an elderly couple’s house to repossess goods, while the elderly occupant suffered a heart complaint. And this is the norm, not the exception. Parliament recently passed laws allowing bailiffs to break into your house, so without our elected representatives to rely on, it looks like it’s up to us! In Bath during the Poll Tax campaign of the early 90s, and today in Edinburgh, London and elsewhere, bailiffs have met community solidarity. Organising amongst your neighbours to face off bailiffs when they turn up on your street is a powerful way of defending yourself, your property and your community against these vultures. Bailiffs prey on the weak, the stranded and the vulnerable. Resisting bailiffs is to be a key part of BAN’s anti-recession campaign in the coming year, and they will be holding an informal day of discussion, networking and organising on Saturday the 28th of February; location TBC. To get involved in the campaign, if you need help organising resistance to bailiffs or if you can name and shame any bailiffs, e‑mail BAN at bathactivistnet [at] yahoo.co.uk

Rescue Rangers

Apparently, a dog’s not just for Christmas, and neither is the rest of the four-legged furry world, too. Following the usual seasonal peak in little Timmy and Sarah’s passing whim for cute little caged pets, a huge number of unwanted rodents need re-homing. Whilst the majority of humankind can’t get over the crazed notion that other animals exist purely to entertain, feed and otherwise serve them, and pet breeders are always out to make a quick buck, official rescue authorities such as the RSPCA centres and Bath Cats & Dogs Home are full to bursting, with many hapless beasts not lucky enough to reach rescue centers facing lethal injection. If you can offer a loving and responsible home for any of four mice, 21 gerbils or 60 rats in the nearby area, please drop us a line.

Greece Is The Word

Last month’s issue of the Bath Bomb carried a hastily-written report of the murder of a Greek teenager, and the night of riots following his death. Since then, the riots have given birth to a full-blown revolt and although (or probably more accurately, because) a genuinely revolutionary situation has emerged in Greece, the media has lost interest. Don’t let the subsidence of the sensationalist tabloid press’s ranting of ‘bomb-throwing youths’ fool you though, the insurrection in Greece is as alive as ever. Coinciding with a general strike, the riots expanded beyond the anarchist movement and became a coherent expression of anger at the deepening economic crisis. For three weeks, rioting involving hundreds of thousands raged across all of Greece, with symbols of capitalism and the state, such as police stations and banks, targeted by Molotovs, bricks and graffiti. Universities, schools and workplaces were occupied and self-managed by workers and students, and many districts of Greece remain in control of the residents, as no-go areas for the police. So why have the events in Greece fallen from the eye of the world’s media? It is because revolt and revolution almost always initially manifest themselves in rioting and ‘chaos’. It is the instinct of most people, when liberated from the oppressive yoke of their former masters to celebrate, revel, and attack the symbols of the old order — this makes exciting footage, which can easily be portrayed as misguided violence. The next step in a revolt is thoughtfulness, of organisation, of order, and of beginning to think about how to organise and practically manifest a liberated space. The media have given this phase no attention, as firstly, it’s less dramatic, and secondly, and most importantly, because it is against the ethos of the corporate media to report on radicals as rational people capable of, and serious about, organising a society free of leaders, poverty and capitalist greed. Make no mistake, Greece is still in revolt, and is proving that as the old saying goes “capitalism is chaos, anarchy is order.”

Welcome To The New Year

2008 finished with riots in Greece, as people on the streets fought back against the corrupt government and police who gunned down Alexandros-Andreas Grigoropoulos. 2009 has opened with a bloodbath in Gaza carried out by the Israeli Defence Force, while world leaders blame the victims and refuse to interfere like they did with Iraq and Afghanistan, all because Israel is their friend. Only ordinary people throughout the world have raised their voices against this new wave of killing. Meanwhile, over here, unemployment and house repossession are up because we pay for the crisis caused by policy makers and politicians. Let’s try to make 2009 a year when we can shake off these leaders who run this sick system. A year like England 1381, Great Britain 1640, France 1789, Europe 1848, Mexico 1914, Russia 1917, Kronstadt and the Ukraine 1921, Spain 1936, Hungary 1956, everywhere 1968 and Eastern Europe 1989. Most of these struggles fell just short, permitting dictatorships of the left and right, but these were still years in which ordinary people strived to bring about a better world, and will try again. (Oscar Nominee inspirational speech time:) the time is always now, and if you’re interested in joining the struggle in a movement where everybody is equal and valued, join us in Bath Activist Network. A better world is possible!

Bath Activist Network are a local umbrella group campaigning on issues as diverse as development, environmentalism, anti-war, animal rights, workers’ rights and more. Helping to produce The Bath Bomb, we are open to anyone, and our members range from trade unionists to anarchists, liberals to greens, and people who just want to change Bath for the better. Earth First! Things First

During the coming Bath Book festival on the 1st of March, Bath Central Library will be hosting the exhibition ‘Portrait of a Road Protest,’ about the goings on at Solsbury Hill in the early 90s. It’s free entry to see the images, but a talk will take place from 3–4pm, £6 entry waged, £4 unwaged. Here’s a little history lesson. The direct action protest against the would-be Batheaston Bypass began in March ‘94, following the public enquiry several years before. Batheaston did have a traffic problem, and a small bypass, traffic calming or improved public transport (we’re still waiting) would have been acceptable, but the sheer scale of the road, destroying water meadows and slicing through the lower slopes of Solsbury Hill, was madness. The non-violent direct action that took place consisted of sitting on diggers, building tree camps, squatting, blockading, and standing up to the mostly brutal security guards (rumour has it that one was fed raw meat!). The protest brought many different people together: locals, Earth First!ers and Dongas, all fighting the Department of Transport. Over all, it went on for several months, with reunion actions the following year, received lots of coverage and, along with other road protests round the rest of the country, cut back around 90% of the UK road building programme started by the dreaded iron lady.

Airport Expansion Is Plane Stupid

The runway of Stansted airport was invaded by activists from the group Plane Stupid at 3.15am on 8th December, while closed for maintenance work. Scheduled to be reopened at 5am, the runway was closed for three hours while confused cops and security guards struggled to remove 57 protestors. 56 flights were cancelled. The average flight out of Stansted releases 41.58 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. We literally can’t go on like this – hopes of the UK meeting even the ridiculously low government-set targets for emissions are screwed if we don’t cut our reliance on aviation, yet Neo-Labour has approved the capacity increase of Stansted by ten million passengers a year. So yeah, this action no doubt pissed many people off, but nothing else has worked so far. Who now would deny the worthiness of the cause of the suffragettes, and the effectiveness of their tactics (which were far more disruptive than those of Plane Stupid, who’ve never turned to explosives)? Thousands of well-behaved protestors marched against the war in Iraq and got nowhere. The media claim that protestors disrupted working class families’ holidays, yet it is the poor who will be hit hardest by climate change — who generally lack the means to survive floods, famine and freak weather. Indeed, statistics show that the majority of flights are still taken by business people and rich holiday-makers. Plane Stupid’s stunt comes at a critical time when the government is soon to make their decision on Heathrow’s third runway, and desperate times call for radical measures. To protect the very near future, we must act now.

Review Corner: Off The Hoof

As we always say, going vegan is a way forward to save the world against climate change and to take a stand against the cruel and murderous meat industry, so we here at the Bath Bomb thought we’d take a look at this latest news agent addition. Off the Hoof is a magazine that purports to cater for “veggies, vegans and meat eaters everywhere.” However, a closer inspection reveals that this is unfortunately a vegan mag for vegan people, with some of the content sure to offend all but the thickest-skinned of meat eaters. This first winter issue has interviews with vegan celebs such as contortionist Rubber Richie, medal-winning body builder Pete Ryan, and musician Debbie Leigh Driver, and features on vegan stars like Natalie Portman and Chris Martin. Oh, and an article on non-vegan Harry Hill and his fair trade nuts. The magazine is generally a very good read with interesting articles, and a style all of its own. Why not give it a read?

Duck Tales

It may be a new year, but some things never change. The epic war between compassionate do-gooders and the arrogant animal-abusing restaurateurs of Bath over the issue of foie gras continues. But enough objective journalism. The production of foie gras is banned in this country and many others, and involves taking otherwise free-range ducks and geese and forcing them to spend the last 12 weeks of their lives in tiny cages, being force-fed corn mash up to three times a day via gavage pipes shoved down their throats. Eventually, as well as suffering throat lacerations and finding it painful to move, the birds’ livers become infected with the disease ‘hepatic steatosis’ and expand to up to ten times its natural size – which is then served up as pâte de foie gras. Haute cuisine this is not. Though restaurants present this as an exotic delicacy, the scale and ethic of production is closer to that of fast food, and then they just slap on a hefty mark-up.

Over the Christmas period, regular protests and visits from Bath Animal Action, Bath Activist Network and Bristol Animal Rights Coalition persuaded The Pinch and Bistro Number 5 to stop publicly selling, but they are both expected to resume the dirty habit soon. The Olive Tree and Royal Crescent Hotel both apparently only serve ‘faux gras,’ a seasonal, rarer dish, based on the natural over-eating tendencies of geese before migration, and involves much less animal torture. Bathampton Mill has been found to be selling foie gras, as have Beaujolais, who’ve been serving dodgily under the counter ever since previous protests; didn’t your mum ever tell you lying was wrong? Whilst around 800 members of the public have now added their signatures to a petition calling for a city-wide ban on the sale of the stuff, the offending eateries should be expecting mystery shoppers and more demos soon.

Here endeth the sermon.

For Fox Sake

Boxing Day saw hunt sabs from Bath teaming up with Pewsey and Wales to stop the cruel ‘sport’ of fox hunting — we followed the hunters with video cameras to ensure they obeyed the law, and used citronella spray to mask the fox’s scent. This jittery reporter was concerned by the hunt supporters’ history of violence towards saboteurs, yet the barbaric scum gave up after a pitiful hour and a half. Maybe it had something to do with the highly effective hunt sabbing seen on the day, or maybe the hunt master just realised he’d left his cousin handcuffed to the bed. It is illegal to hunt with dogs in the UK, although it is still legal to exercise hounds, chase a scent and flush out foxes to be shot, making the ban virtually un-enforceable. Police generally don’t give a shit, so saboteurs are needed as much as ever. To get involved contact Bath Hunt Sabs at bathhuntsabs [at] yahoo.co.uk, or find your local group at http://hsa.enviroweb.org/contact/index.html

Animal Rights Case Concern to Environmentalists & call out for 19th January — updated with CW analysis

While the case of 4 animal rights campaigners found guilty on “conspiracy to blackmail” charges in relation to contract testing company Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) that tests on animals may seem unrelated to the environmental movement the case has direct relevance to all radical environmentalists.

While the case of 4 animal rights campaigners found guilty on “conspiracy to blackmail” charges in relation to contract testing company Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) that tests on animals may seem unrelated to the environmental movement the case has direct relevance to all radical environmentalists. The activists were convicted for their part in the now famous SHAC (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty) campaign that’s stated aim is to close down the company.

Following their convictions the media lambasted the activists for numerous unlawful and intimidating actions taken against Huntingdon and associated companies. Many of these actions will be distasteful to some and there are many differing views on animal research in the environmental movement however this case has wider implications for activists across the board.

After a recent national media article claiming a lone extremist might be planning an attack aimed at population reduction was published, which NETCU appear to have had a hand in, some feel that NETCU (National Extremism Tactical Co-ordination Unit) could be turning their spotlight on the environmental movement. Additionally the policing tactics experienced at Climate Camp indicate that animal rights campaigners aren’t the sole focus of NETCU. If the environmental movement is the new target of NETCU this judgement should be taken seriously by all environmentalists.

This case seems to imply that the “organisers” of radical campaigns are fully responsible for everyone that targets the company that they are campaigning against. Indeed it is the case some campaigners acting against HLS and associated companies used direct action and it’s true that the defendants did not necessarily condemn this type of action either. However what is being said is there is no evidence that the defendants were involved in or even incited the actions listed in the media and which it seems they have been held liable for in court.

So what is to be understood by this case is that a radical campaign, such as SHAC, Earth First or Climate Camp is fully responsible for the actions of all its supporters. It seems that a campaign is expected to ‘control’ activists and speak out against every illegal action they make or be faced with responsibility for the other activist’s actions.

This will be a problem for networks and groups like Earth First and Climate Camp the police need only arrest the group organising the EF! gathering, the people who promote Climate Camp etc. and then hold them responsible for the actions of anyone campaigning on the same issue or using the campaign name, anyone taking action against GMOs or who attacked the power station during Climate Camp.

The police no longer need to find and arrest the person who committed the relevant action but can simply imply that the campaign is responsible especially if the campaign supports direct action or carries reports on such actions on their website.

On Monday 19th January there has been a call out for a National Anti-Vivisection Day of Action/Freedom to Protest Day of Action in support of the SHAC activists that are being sentenced on that day. Because of the direct relevance of this case to environmentalists I ask that regardless of your individual viewpoint on the SHAC campaign or animal testing you do something to support the freedom to campaign. This could be as simple as dedicating an already planned environmental action to the campaigners or holding a small protest.

FREEDOM TO PROTEST NOW!

State repression of Anti-Corporate Dissent: Animal right activists convicted of ‘conspiracy to blackmail’

On December 23rd, 4 out of 5 activists on trial at Winchester Crown Court were found guilty of ‘Conspiracy to Blackmail’ at Winchester Crown Court after a 3 and a half month long show trial. The world’s media, prompted by police press officers, were quick to condemn activists by pointing to harassment against the employees of Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) and their customers, shareholders and investors. Actions against HLS, not linked to those convicted, such as hoax bombs, letters alleging paedophilia, and threats were pointed to as evidence of the defendants’ extremism. Police spokesmen and the National Extremist Coordination Unit (NETCU), the branch of the police set up to deal with the AR movement and other expressions of the public’s dissent, hailed the convictions as a victory. (For more information on NETCU see here and here.

What was not examined in the media was the worrying development of the repressive use of the law which lead to the conviction of the four defendants.

Corporate Watch has followed the progress of the trial at Winchester since the beginning. The reason we were concerned about the trial is that we see it as part of a larger attack on the animal rights movement motivated by the state’s desire to protect private corporations against dissent. Since the animal rights movement began to effectively challenge the profits of those involved in vivisection and the pharmaceutical industry the state has repeatedly responded with new repressive measures. In May this year Sean Kirtley, an activist involved with Stop Sequani Animal Torture (SSAT), was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for updating a website with news about a legal, nonviolent campaign to close down Sequani laboratories in Ledbury. Kirtley was convicted of ‘Conspiracy to interfere with the contractual relations of an animal research facility under section 145 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act’ (SOCPA 145) . His only crime was to protest lawfully against the lab and to update a website.

NETCU, however, was not satisfied with seeing animal rights activists banged up for four and a half years and chose to charge campaigners associated with Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) with ‘conspiracy to blackmail’, an offence carrying up to 14 years in prison. In May 2007, police arrested 32 people in raids dubbed ‘Operation Achilles’. Since then, 15 people have been charged with ‘conspiracy’ and are being tried in two separate trials, of which this was the first.

The charges relate to over four years of concerted campaigning against HLS, the largest contract testing laboratory in Europe. The defendants included people who had been involved in SHAC from the outset. However, two of the defendants, Gerrah Selby and Dan Wadham, had been in their early teens at the beginning of the period concerned and had only been involved for a short time. Wadham was only 17 when his part of the alleged conspiracy allegedly occurred.

SHAC, an international campaign group calling for the closure of HLS, has been painted by the police and the press as a ‘criminal organisation’ duping members of the public concerned with animal abuse into donating their money to further ‘a campaign of blackmail’. SHAC’s activities, however, have been overwhelmingly lawful: the campaign publishes information about animal abuse inside HLS labs, reports campaigning activities and issues action alerts calling on supporters to write polite letters to companies working with HLS and ask them to desist. If those companies continue to do business with HLS, protests would usually follow. All material on the SHAC website is checked by a barrister and police are given prior notice of their demonstrations.

Customers, suppliers and shareholders in HLS have also been the subject of some direct action. Slogans have been daubed at company premises and employees homes; cars have been painstrippered; hoax bombs have been sent and employees have been accused of being paedophiles. However, these actions are not directly linked to the SHAC campaign and have only tenuous links to the defendants, whose faces were spashed across many tabloid front pages after their convictions at Winchester.

During the summer, three defendants, committed campaigners against HLS, plead guilty to charges of ‘conspiracy to blackmail’. During the trial, evidence recovered from the campaign PCs and activists’ personal computers was presented. Police had found many documents believed to have been permanently deleted or shredded by their authors. This included a spreadsheet detailing names and addresses of people working for companies linked to HLS, details of direct actions carried out against them and a document containing a private chat between activists apparently talking about direct action. This evidence may suggest that some activists had decided to take direct action against companies linked to HLS, but the evidence linking the defendants found guilty on 23rd December to these documents was circumstantial and, in some cases, non-existent. Even if some activists linked to SHAC did decide to take direct action, this does not make everybody associated with the campaign guilty by association. The prosecution case was that that the entire SHAC campaign was aimed at closing down HLS, which is true, and that SHAC campaigners attempted to persuade companies not to work with HLS, which is also true. The prosecution argument, however, went on to imply that, when companies did not agree to cease trading with HLS, they were the subject of direct action. Often direct action did occur but this was not under the banner of SHAC. Moreover, SHAC did not publish any information about companies that was not already in the public domain. But because some activists, sometimes under the banner of the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), did take direct action, the prosecution argued that the SHAC campaign was facilitating direct action and giving it its tacit appoval. The police went one step further and said SHAC and the ALF were one and the same thing!

Much of the evidence in the three-month trial was in relation to lawful demonstrations against companies linked to HLS. This was particularly important in the instances of defendants who could not be linked to the uncovered computer evidence. In several cases, the only evidence was what they had said at demonstrations. Comments made by defendants during protests in earshot of the police were portrayed as linking them to the ‘conspiracy’. Comments, such as “we know where you live”, were taken as proof that defendants were party to the conspiracy. In any other context, such spur-of-the-moment comments would have, at most, lead to minor charges in the Magistrate’s Court. Equally important was the fact that some of those convicted were linked personally to the defendants who pleaded guilty. Heather Nicholson and Gerrah Selby had both shared houses with them. This was obviously a factor in finding them guilty by association.

So what does this mean for free speech and anti-corporate dissent in the UK? By the same logic, an anti-war campaign that publishes information on the whereabouts of a military base or arms factory and calls for its closure could be put in the frame for the same crime if that base was then the subject of an arson attack. All it would take would be for the police to imply that the people running the public campaign are linked to those involved in direct action. Consequently, campaigners might feel compelled to publicly distance themselves from acts of direct action lest they find that, unbeknown to them, those responsible for the covert actions are involved in public action too and the whole movement is charged with ‘conspiracy’. In fact, the use of such charges is a classic police tactic aimed at spreading paranoia and convicting as many activists as possible for acts carried out by only a few. The aim is also to minimise public support for illegal actions by harrassing and criminalising those who speak up in solidarity.

NETCU have already intimated, for example in the recent Mark Townsend article on ‘eco-terrorists’, that environmental or anti-gm protesters might be their next target.

The convicted activists are now long periods in jail, they will be sentenced on January 19th. Heather Nicholson, who was remanded after her arrest in May 2007, has already spent over 19 months in jail, longer than some convicted of serious assaults or sex crimes would spend in prison. In May this year, Sean Kirtley, who was imprisoned for his role in another animal rights campaign, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison on the same day that men who beat a man until he was blind received two years. Since ‘Operation Achilles’, the police have been patting themselves on the back for putting the animal rights movement into ‘disarray’. A NETCU source told the Observer in November 2008 that the animal rights movement’s ‘ringleaders’ had ‘either been prosecuted or were awaiting prosecution.’ One may suspect that comments like these are more to do with maintaining NETCU’s funding than reality (see this Corporate Watch commentary for more details).

In fact the attack on animal rights campaigners does not seem to have limited their capacity to take action. Regular demonstrations are still taking place against companies linked to HLS, with one planned for 29th December. The ALF, which does not seem to be in need of ‘leaders’, has recently freed 70 turkeys from a UK farm. If anything, the global animal rights movement seems to be growing steadily.

The decision to try these campaigners for ‘conspiracy to blackmail’ was evidently a political one. Huge amounts of police resources have been poured into this prosecution, and others like it, at the behest of the Labour government. This is due to the effectiveness of the animal rights movement in confronting and challenging the power of corporations involved in animal abuse. The demonisation of animal rights campaigners in the media, facilitated by NETCU press releases, only makes it easier for the state to repress them without public outcry. The conviction of the defendants at Winchester is yet another nail in the coffin of the public’s right to voice their anger and dissent against corporate crime.

Sea Shepherd Clashes With Whaling Fleet in Australian Waters

December 26th, 2008
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship Steve Irwin closed in on one of the vessels of the Japanese whaling fleet at 0730 Hours GMT (1930 Hours Sydney Time) on December 26th off the coast of the Australian Antarctic Territory north of the Mawson Peninsula.

Steve Irwin clashes with Kaiko MaruDecember 26th, 2008
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship Steve Irwin closed in on one of the vessels of the Japanese whaling fleet at 0730 Hours GMT (1930 Hours Sydney Time) on December 26th off the coast of the Australian Antarctic Territory north of the Mawson Peninsula.

The Kaiko Maru emerged from dense fog in front of the Steve Irwin. The Sea Shepherd crew pursued and delivered 10 bottles of rotten butter and 15 bottles of a methyl cellulose and indelible dye mixture.

“That is one stinky slippery ship,” said Sea Shepherd 2nd Officer Peter Hammarstedt of Sweden.

The Japanese ship was ordered out of the territorial waters of Australia by Australian citizen Jeff Hansen from Perth, Western Australia. The message was delivered in Japanese.

As the Steve Irwin came alongside the starboard side of the Kaiko Maru, the whaler steered hard to starboard and struck the Steve Irwin lightly crushing part of the aft port helicopter deck guard rails on the Sea Shepherd ship. There was no serious damage to either ship.

The Sea Shepherd crew’s objective was to intimidate the Japanese fleet and to keep them moving Eastward out of Australian Territorial waters. The Sea Shepherd crew have been pursuing the fleet eastward for a week. There is only 90 miles left before the fleet enters the New Zealand Zone.

“Our objective now is to chase them out of Australia’s Economic Exclusion Zone,” said Captain Paul Watson. “I have a chart here and it clearly states that these waters are Australian EEZ. There is an Australian Federal Court Order specifically prohibiting these ships from whaling in these waters. We have informed the whalers they are in contempt of this Court ruling.”

There is no doubt that Japanese whaling in Australian waters has been severely disrupted. Since Saturday, the Sea Shepherd crew have chased the Japanese fleet for 400 miles through heavy fog, dense ice and nasty weather. During that time they have not been able to kill any whales.

“We still have them on the run and we intend to keep them on the run for as long as our fuel resources allow,” said Captain Watson.
