WHERE’S WALLY PROTECTOR BLOCKS BARTON MOSS IGAS GATE

A campaigner dressed as Where’s Wally superglued herself to the entrance gates of the IGas drilling site at Barton Moss today to delay trucks trying to leave the plant.

Meanwhile three more arrests were made at the site today as campaigners against fracking in Salford accused Greater Manchester Police of ‘aggression’.

Following on from Monday, when a campaigner locked himself onto to a tanker that was attempting to leave the IGas drilling site at Barton Moss, today a campaigner dressed as Where’s Wally superglued herself to the site’s gates to also delay lorries trying to leave in another imaginative protest.

Earlier, ten trucks were delayed by over an hour trying to get into the site as campaigners walked slowly in front of them doing the ‘Salford Shuffle’. Greater Manchester Police arrested three people ‘on suspicion of obstructing a highway’.

Sophie Baxter from Frack Free Greater Manchester said: “I fully support the people down there who have given up everything to help protect our community against corporate interests. IGas, the Government and the local council continue to underestimate the strong public opinion against fracking.

“The police were very aggressive towards people this morning, all of the arrests were needless” she added “We will not tolerate this type of aggression from a police force that is meant to be here to protect the public and are currently seeking legal advice to take this further.”

Those who have set up camp at Barton Moss and those who attend the now daily protests have called on more people from Greater Manchester and Salford to go down to the site and show support.

Barton Moss anti-fracking action: Day 34: Mon 30th December

Man chained to lorry

Man chained to lorry

Great solo action today with a man D‑locking himself to a truck attempting to leave the site at Barton Moss.  The truck was at the front of a convoy meaning that all the other trucks were stuck behind it.  The man was eventually removed by the Police’s ‘Protester Removal Team’.  Meanwhile, there was a good turn from the local community to slow down iGas unwelcome operations.

Big Bus Blockade

Another unexpected arrival. A big orange bus appears to have mysteriously broken down, blocking the entrance to the fracking site. What next?

Five brave Barton Moss Protectors are locked to a BIG ORANGE BUS preventing access to IGas’ site.

* One locked to the steering wheel and accelerator
* One locked underneath
* One locked to the roof-skylight
* One locked to the back door by the neck
* One locked to front door by the leg

The blockade lasted for six hours until the afternoon, after police eviction teams removed the Defenders.  iGas’ drilling rig arrived to site later in the day – having been significantly delayed.

The action is part of the growing opposition to fracking and in reaction to the Governments announcement yesterday of a new licensing round for onshore oil and gas which will now cover over 60% of the UK and will include the whole of Greater Manchester.

Stephen Lockwood who lives at the Barton Moss Protection Camp said, “Fracking is highly dangerous. The government is actively promoting it despite overwhelming opposition from the local communities it’s being imposed upon. Not only are they allowing the oil and gas companies to ride roughshod over the democratic process, environment and legally binding climate change targets, they are now giving them tax breaks whilst they do so.”

He continued, “Many powerful government figures have financially declared interests in the oil and gas industry and are ignoring the will of the people. It’s up to all of us to call them to account and stop these toxic developments.”

Ministers have also published draft legislation for tax breaks for fracking companies – while confirming the industry will offer financial incentives of £100,000 per well to persuade people to accept fracking in their local area.

Local resident, 82 year old Anne Power said, “What are the government thinking? How can they think that covering the whole of Greater Manchester with fracking rigs is a good idea. The industry themselves have admitted that they are struggling in the face of public opposition yet the government continue to think they can force this on us.”

She continued, “I have been delighted to see the resurgence of the community spirit in Salford and in fact, all over the country but what has this country come to when our younger generation are forced into taking such drastic action in order to protect their communities?”

The land on which IGas plan to drill is leased from corporate giant Peel Holdings who own vast swathes of land in the area, including the Manchester Ship Canal and a number of ports and airports. Peel Holdings, the empire of billionaire John Whittaker[3], has several pockets of land leased for drilling in the Manchester area including another a site in Trafford for which IGas also has planning permission. Peel look to be tied up with the future of unconventional gas in the North West where they have been securing parcels of land for fracking development in recent months.

The fracking test site at Barton Moss has been blockaded with a giant wind turbine blade!

Around fifty people arrived at 5.30 this morning to leave this imaginative early Christmas gift for fracking company IGas.

The Barton Moss site, near Salford in Greater Manchester, is the latest frontline in the battle for clean energy in the UK. IGas are trying to carry out test drilling to see if the site is suitable for extracting coal bed methane and shale gas, despite strong opposition from local residents and the community protection camp that has been resisting the drilling since mid-November. However, the site’s only entrance is now completely blocked by the 1.5 tonne blade, so there won’t be any drilling equipment heading in there for a while…

Day 17: Fri 13th December

A big day of resistance from the Barton Moss Protection Camp against IGas’ drilling plans.  Around 12 drilling trucks were delayed entering the site for 2 hours under a heavy police escort.  Three people were arrested, including a pregnant women and elderly lady.  Police were widely condemned on social media for their heavy handedness.  A disabled man suffered a broken knee after being thrown into the hedgerow by police.

Many trucks also left the site the same afternoon, taking a lot of equipment with them.  It is believed that IGas are preparing for their next stage of exploratory drilling.

Friday 13th December marks a year since the government lifted the moratorium on fracking but we’ve still had no fracking this year thanks to the amazing and inspiring community campaigns around the country.

tripod-stony-creek12th December For the second day 40 conservationists have maintained a forest protest action at Stony Creek in East Gippsland. Police Search and Rescue arrived at the site this afternoon. They proceeded to tie-off cables connected to the tree sit, to release the logging machinery. Police climbed the tree-sitter’s tree, removing the platform and the protester’s personal belongings, including blankets, food and water. The tree-sitter remains perched on branches at the top of the tree. Two people are still  at the top of tripods on the road, continuing to block access to log trucks. Logging contractors have began felling trees within the logging coupe.

“The commitment of these dedicated people, willing to face arrest or difficult conditions in the tree-tops, demonstrates their resolve to see our  forests and endangered wildlife protected for the future” said Miranda Gibson, spokesperson for Still Wild Still Threatened.

“The destruction of forests that are home to threatened wildlife displays repeated disregard for the  the government’s own scientists and is an afront to the tax-payer who foots the bill. ” said David Caldwell, Goongerah Environment Centre (GECO).

1453293_10152090539047387_1242693521_n 10th December  This past Spring, Quebec’s Ministry of Natural Resources—without meaningfully consulting the Algonquins of Barriere Lake—issued permits for the 2013–14 operating year to Resolute Forest Products and other large logging companies who have subsequently clear-cut vast tracts of the forest this past summer and fall, up to last week, when the Algonquins stopped the unauthorized logging, which has been taking place in violation of signed Agreements with the First Nation.

Resolute Forest Products and other logging companies have already damaged many sensitive area sites on the Barriere Lake Trilateral Agreement Territory, including sensitive area sites which the Quebec Ministry of Natural Resources and the logging companies know to be of particular cultural and ecological importance.

Today the Algonquins have erected a Land Protection camp within the La Verendrye Wildlife Reserve at the Poigan sector, to stop unauthorized logging from damaging Algonquin cultural sites and critical wildlife habitat until an already agreed upon Measures to Harmonize Process is re-established on an urgent basis. The Algonquins of Barriere Lake are demanding that the Quebec government:

  • Cooperate in a measures to harmonize process to identify and protect cultural and ecological sites.
  • Honour the 1991 landmark Barriere Lake Trilateral Agreement and related 1998 Agreement with Quebec on Co-Management and Resource Revenue Sharing among other issues.

New Protest Camp at Wisborough Green and Kirdford Proposed Drill Site

253091804226th October A small band of anti-fracking campaigners who wished to be known as ‘protectors’ have set up camp on land adjacent to Celtique Energie’s proposed drill site.

253091804226th October A small band of anti-fracking campaigners who wished to be known as ‘protectors’ have set up camp on land adjacent to Celtique Energie’s proposed drill site.

Many of them have spent time in Balcombe, protesting against Cuadrilla’s drilling activities.

Talking from their camp, where they have permission from the land owner to temporarily reside, one of the group said: “I’m here because the country is on the brink of what could possibly be the most intense environmental catastrophe that we have ever known, and that its sneaked in under the radar of good sense, under the radar of democracy, and people aren’t aware just how dangerous fracking can be, particularly in this country where we are riddled with fault lines.”

Tim, who preferred not to give his surname and age, added: “It is a matter of great urgency that every body stands up and gets active now.

“We’re all activists now and that is how it is – one way or another the country is being industrialised, and it is time for everybody to stand up.”

Fellow ‘protector’ Prajna spoke of one of our ‘existential rights’ – water, saying it is under threat by the process of hydraulic fracturing which uses high pressure water laced with chemicals to stimulate oil and gas reserves trapped in rock beneath the ground.

The 53 year old, who travels with his 46 year partner Kali, spent two months at Balcombe before arriving in Kirdford about two weeks ago.

“If fracking were to take place in Wisborough Green and Kirdford it would be disastrous for this local environment,” said Kali. “But equally it is going to be disastrous for the whole island – poisoned water supplies.

“It is going to affect absolutely every individual and if the water is contaminated than we shall be dependent on corporations who bring it in from elsewhere.”

1017374225

A 27 year old called Dominic added: “I’ve come here to raise awareness among local people about fracking – it is an attack on the natural ecosystems of the area.”

Kris, sporting an impressive ginger moustache, said he had been brought up in the oil industry and had lived all around the world, but was now totally disillusioned with the sector for many reasons.

But chief amongst these, he said: “There is a very substantial risk of contaminating the water table.”

Asked why those we spoke to were reticent to give their full names, they said it could give the authorities and corporations a hold over them, and raised concerns about the might of the organisations against which they are campaigning.

———————————————————————————–

One of the most colourful characters we spoke to at the Kirdford camp called himself Bro Rainbow. What follows is a direct transcript of the interview with Bro.

How old are you Bro?

Eternal

Where’s home?

Where the heart is.

Is that right here now?

Always, hope so, otherwise get an ambulance.

Why here right now?

Why right here and now, it’s the only place you can be – here and now – they call it the present – it’s a gift, make the most of it.

Why have you come here?

Because it really actually matters. We are one nation, one tribe, living on a very beautiful space-ship – they call it Earth, but I call it Planet Heart which is just a respelling of Earth.

But actually it is not earth, it is two thirds water and so it is planet Heart, and she is spinning 1,800 mph – can you feel it?

The most amazing life support system that I am aware of in the moment, and what’s going on? Just delusion, truly, and madness. And the future generations are going to look back and they will just be incredulous at what has been happening up until this point.

Basically, do we truly need it? This gas, this fracking, this desecration of the Mother, this ruination of our water, our air, our soil – is it needed?

Yes, because we need to change our consciousness and we need to rise above, that’s from my heart to yours, that we all might live true.

And here’s a poem:

“Listen’t to the mustn’ts child

Listen to the don’ts

Listen to the wouldn’ts, couldn’ts, shouldn’ts and the won’ts,

Listen very closely,

Then listen close to me,

Anything can happen,

And anything can be,

And in the potential reality that I want to exist in, this is not happening – ok.

They say that an English woman’s home is her castle, I say women because we’re women and man, we’re two sided,

We’re not all right, we’re half right, half left.”

That’s the truth of it, otherwise we’d fall over, and hopefully, straight up the middle,

Straight up, fracking is wrong and that is why I am here because I feel it intensely within me, and I am voting with my feet and my whole being, to be here to say please, let’s go in a different direction.

Bless

Yesterday (Wed, 09.Oct.2013) energy giant RWE (Rheinisch-Westfälisches Elektrizitätswerk AG) used the bailiffs of the system to break down the protective appliances in the squatted HAMBACH FOREST — we suspect an eviction to be imminent!
This is a call out to everyone interested: Join the resistance in the Rhineland — you anarchists, eco-activists, wrong-doers, revolutionaries and everyone else, join the struggle — NOW!

——————————–
This is the rough translation of a text published yesterday on www.linksunten.indymedia.org (Germany) by a group calling themselves “Black Block Forest Defenders” whom we are supporting herewith…
——————————-

“RWE Fuck off & Die!”

The Hambach Forest is bound to be clear-cut by RWE to further extend the biggest human-made hole in Europe (the Hambach open cast mine to excavate lignite/brown coal).
Since April 2012 there was a forest occupation (until November 2012 and again in March 2012, adding there is an ongoing and vital protest camp located on a meadow directly at the edge of the forest since November 2012.)
And recently, during the Climate-/ReclaimTheFields!-Camps, a new forest occupation did arise and is held since one month now.

But this occupation of the “doomed” forest is of course threatened by the authorities who already destroyed some platforms and also hassle the meadow-protest-camp on a constant basis by random arrests (which always led nowhere) and destruction of infrastructure (showers, toilets, barricades,…).

Yesterday police and RWE-forestry-workers have been here again, destroying barricades, filling trenches, cutting lanes and ripping access roads in the forest.

- we certainly do not call those who want to support the struggle but cannot/don’t want to come here to create their own ideas on how to attack state, capital, energy providers, police, repressive administrations & Co. everywhere… 😉

- and those who rather would like to squat houses instead of trees we do not tell that there are hundreds of empty buildings in the area. Because this might only be hearsay… 😉

Everyday now could be the time of eviction. In our view this day would be DAY X.

DAY X could be exactly the day to meet SOMEWHERE — here at the Hambach Forest or/and in your town and area to protest and do action, to be present against the systematic crap which is happening here and everywhere!
Capitalism, the logic of growth, the destruction of our means of living, displacement, hunger and death are global — and so are our anger, our hate and our actions of protest!

The energy giant RWE is Europe’s most prolific lover of lignite, is digging the biggest hole in Europe in a relentless manor (Tagebau Hambach), is expropriating people on a law-base which was installed during the Third Reich (Bergrecht) and destroys whole areas (right now: Morschenich and Manheim), is responsible for tenthousands of murders (climate refugees, coal excavation in e.g. Columbia,…), the extinction of species (Bechstein-bat), is a vital part of the German politics of austerity (EIB-credits) and has its headquarters in Essen (?!).

Hambacher Forst stays!
Undermine, occupy, forjudge and dismantle RWE — STOP THEM NOW!
