rats114th November One week after announcing the closure of its laboratory in São Roque, the Instituto Royal was raided again. In the early hours of November 13, a group of masked activists stormed the complex, forced open doors and removed more than 300 rats and mice who still remained inside the lab. According to police, three security guards were tied up during the raid (one guard was tied up with laces from his boots).

Expensive microscopes, computers and other research equipment was destroyed. Three cars and a motorcycle parked on site were also vandalized. “We regret that activists have again resorted to riot,” the institute said in a statement.

Gloucestershire Badger Cull Extended by 8 Weeks

badger_wx@body29th October

badger_wx@body29th October

Humane Society UK appalled & flabbergasted at “madness” of Gloucestershire badger cull 8 Week extension, risks spreading bTB

Leading animal welfare charity, Humane Society International UK, is appalled by news that an eight week extension to the Gloucestershire badger cull has been granted by Natural England. The charity warns that prolonging the shooting is the very worst thing the government can do because it increases the risk of spreading bovine TB as badgers flee the area.

Perturbation danger
The extension of the killing period in Gloucestershire more than doubles the original six weeks to 14 weeks. The seminal Randomised Badger Culling Trial highlighted the importance of any cull to be done quickly because of the danger of perturbation.

Fiasco
Mark Jones, Gloucestershire resident and Executive Director of HSI UK said: “I am appalled & flabbergasted that an eight week extension has been granted to DEFRA’s badger killing fiasco in Gloucestershire. By extending culls here as well as in Somerset, the pilots are moving even more dangerously away from the recommendations of the Randomised Badger Culling Trial which were very clear – the longer you subject badgers to this sort of disruption, the greater the risk of worsening the spread of bovine TB among both badgers and cattle. It is utterly illogical to continue with a policy that has already proven such a disaster, and flies squarely in the face of sound scientific advice. Surely somebody in Government can put a stop to Owen Paterson’s badger cull madness before it’s too late.”

In Gloucestershire 708 out of a target 1,650 badgers have been killed. In Somerset 850 badgers out of a target 1,020 have been shot.

HSI UK has also written to Owen Paterson to ask him to explain himself over unsubstantiated claims he made last week about badger suffering. On 10th October he stated in a parliamentary answer to a question from Angela Smith MP that ‘…some of the animals we have shot have been desperately sick-in the final stages of disease…’.

No bTB tests on badger carcasses
Mark Jones said: “As a vet I find Mr Paterson’s claim that badgers shot in the pilot culls were ‘desperately sick’ highly suspicious. I know of no evidence to back this up, indeed all the available data suggests that even where bovine TB is rife among cattle, only a tiny proportion of badgers will be suffering any symptoms of the disease. The figure is perhaps as low as one in a hundred. As Mr Paterson has refused to have the badger carcases tested for TB, he cannot possibly have any scientifically credible data to support his assertion and nobody will be permitted to challenge his claim because DEFRA is having all the bodies incinerated. As usual, the Secretary of State is fond of making wild assertions without providing a shred of evidence to support them but in doing so his own credibility is crumbling day by day. It is not animal groups but the Government this is causing badgers to suffer. It is men armed with rifles and shotguns taking pot-shots at these animals who are condemning many to a painful death and no amount of creative accounting by Mr Paterson will change that.”

brazil-beagle-lab-rescue-428th October As reported a little over a week ago that 200 beagles were liberated from a lab in Brazil. This action was unique in that the animals were freed by dozens of activists who stormed the building after a protest, and did not cover their faces to hide their identities.

Today, more photos of the action were released by Will Potter from Green is the New Red. The lab is calling this open rescue an act of terrorism. Potter asks, “Does this look like terrorism to you?”

Biased policing of the badger cull

West Midlands Hunt Sabs encounter with police 26/9/13

West Midlands Hunt Sabs encounter with police 26/9/13

Policing of the badger cull has been overblown and completely biased. If you’re out driving in the cull zone past a certain time and are know to be against the cull your guaranteed to get pulled by police at least once that night, possibly your car searched and if your lucky you’ll end up with police following you around everywhere you go. West Midlands Hunt Saboteurs have  filmed some of this behaviour, the first video shows police telling people in the car that they will be followed everywhere they go in the cull zone because of “intelligence” they have.

The second video, the second day the group are being followed by police completely rips apart the police’s reasons for following people around

Day 2 of police harassment 27/9/13

While the third video is a conversation with police about what their opinions are of people out in the countryside with firearms.

Day 2 of police harassment: People & Firearms

The fourth video shows the police saying they will hand personal details over to the National Farmers Union, completely disregarding civil liberties and the Data Protection Act and further showing the biased nature of the policing of the cull.

Badger Cull Update: We’re Winning

24th September, Due to high numbers of protestors, patrolers and sabs the badger cull is basically f**ked.

24th September, Due to high numbers of protestors, patrolers and sabs the badger cull is basically f**ked.

To begin with the shooters started by luring badgers out to sets buy burying peanuts in ‘good shooting spots’. this resulted in all the peanuts being replaced with repellant thus having the opposite effect they wanted.

Now they have moved to cage trapping, a much slower and more expensive form of killing badgers. Lets just say there are many things that can be done with theese expensive cages (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXmcc-skcdY)

Now we’ve learn’t that the shooters are pulling out and staying at home. This is because all the big sets are constantly protected and all they have left is the ‘slim picking’ (and getting paid per badger killed is’n’t paying them enough to justify getting out of bed)

Some very good news from one of our spies in the farming community:
During an NFU dinner in Cheltenham a couple of nights ago, many farmers from within the cull zone were in attendance, moaning:
“the anti’s are bloody everywhere and it makes the cull impossible”
“We wish we had never heard of the badger cull”
“it just doesn’t work, we haven’t killed any“
Best news of all was that one farmer was overheard to say:
“Our contractor was supposed to come in this week, but he’s cancelled, he said “there’s no point in coming”

Now we have just learn’t that that out of all the hundreds of protesters out there the police have only arrested 7 and all 7 of theese cases have been dropped!

We are half way through the cull, get down to the cull zones and lets end this nonsence once and for all

23rd September, Three people believed to be badger cull protesters who were arrested in Gloucestershire have been released without charge.

badgercull

23rd September, Three people believed to be badger cull protesters who were arrested in Gloucestershire have been released without charge.

A woman, aged 52, from the United States, was detained by officers along with a 20-year-old man from Walsall and another woman, 26, from Croydon.

They were arrested on 19 September on suspicion of aggravated trespass.

Four other people were arrested and bailed on suspicion of theft and aggravated trespass earlier this month.

About 5,000 badgers are to be shot in a six-week pilot in Gloucestershire and Somerset in a bid to curb bovine TB.

Defra will not confirm how many badgers have been shot so far during the pilot.

Those against the cull argue shooting badgers is “inhumane” and will be ineffective.

ALF Releases Captive Pheasants from Farm in Riverside, CA

RiversidePheasants 30 July 2013 Riverside, CA: In a communique received by the North American Animal Liberation Press Office, the Animal Liberation Front has taken credit for liberat

RiversidePheasants 30 July 2013 Riverside, CA: In a communique received by the North American Animal Liberation Press Office, the Animal Liberation Front has taken credit for liberating captive pheasants from four out of six pens at a Riverside, California farm on July 22nd. According to documents posted at the Wildlife Farm Database (“Directory of captive wildlife operations for activists”), the Ash Grove pheasant farm is one of just over 60 farms in California that breed “game birds,” including quail and partridges. The birds are slaughtered for sale as meat, or sold to captive hunting facilities to be shot at close range by so-called hunters.

This is the third raid of a pheasant farm in the last 18 months. In March 2012, the Animal Liberation Front released 70 to 100 birds from a farm in Oregon. Several months later, the ALF released “dozens” of pheasants from another Oregon farm.

The communique reads, in full:

On the night of July 22, the masked rescuers of the Animal Liberation Front entered the Ash Grove Pheasant Farm at 10540 Victoria Avenue in Riverside, California. As the farmer slept just feet away, the fencing was torn open with wire cutters. Four of the six pens on the property were breached, giving these beautiful beings a chance at freedom.

Wildlife farms are everywhere. Their victims can be immediately released, with no rehoming necessary. This life saving action took no specialized skill, less than twenty-four hours of planning, and fifty dollars. With basic tools and determination, anyone is capable of destroying the barrier that stands between an animal and their freedoms.

Stop fraternizing about it. Stop fantasizing about it. Stop frightening yourself out of it. You know you want to – just do it. Wild non-humyns await their release from prisons in your neighborhoods.

‘For only a fool would cling to this world as it is,’   A.L.F

The Animal Liberation Front utilizes economic sabotage in addition to the direct liberation of animals from conditions of abuse and imprisonment to halt needless animal suffering. By making it more expensive to trade in the lives of innocent, sentient beings, the ALF maintain the atrocities against our brothers and sisters are likely to occur in smaller numbers; their goal is to abolish the exploitation, imprisonment, torture and killing of innocent, non-human animals.

Arson at a New Mexico Horse Slaughterhouse

30 July 2013 Earlier today, the owner of Valley Meat, Co., near Roswell, NM, announced that his horse slaughterhouse was hit by arson. The blaze did not burn the whole factory down, but appears to have been targeted for the refrigeration unit.

30 July 2013 Earlier today, the owner of Valley Meat, Co., near Roswell, NM, announced that his horse slaughterhouse was hit by arson. The blaze did not burn the whole factory down, but appears to have been targeted for the refrigeration unit.

According to De Los Santos, “The fire inspector was out there. He took samples of the dirt and stuff just to make sure. But he said this was something that was not done by electricity or lightning. He said something was poured on it to light it.”

The damage will postpone the factory’s startup, since it cannot work without a refrigeration unit. Chaves County police are calling the blaze, “very suspicious.”

According to AP, a passerby notified authorities on Saturday after noticing someone jump the fence and pour lighter fluid on the refrigerator.

De Los Santos claims that opponents have made various threats to him, like “We hope the place catches on fire.” But it’s hard to narrow down the opponents, since the list of organizations opposed to horse slaughtering includes the Humane Society, the USDA, and other groups.

It appears that the Department of Agriculture held up the permits for Valley Meat, but was sued by the company for failing to act. At that point, the permits were given, in spite of a lack of sufficient environmental review.

Direct action gets the goods.

None of this would have been possible two years ago, since Congress lifted a ban on domestic horse slaughter in 2011. Most horse meat, however, is likely to be shipped to other countries that eat horses and to zoos for animal food.

The American Mink is native to the Idaho region, and can survive in the wild after release from captivityThe American Mink is native to North America, and can survive in the wild after release from captivity

“On the evening of July 28, 2013, friends of wildlife entered the Burley, Idaho, mink farm of Fur Commission USA Board Member Cindy Moyle, compromised the perimeter fencing, and set up roving surveillance of the on-site night watchman. We then liberated the entirety of her breeding stock into the wild, emptying over twenty-five percent of this wildlife prison.

Illuminated in the moonlight, 2400 of these wild creatures climbed out of the cages where they had passed their entire lives in isolated darkness, to feel the grass under their feet for the first time. Their initial timidity quickly became a cacophony of gleeful squealing, playing, cavorting, and swimming in the creek that runs directly behind the Moyle property. They will live out their new lives along the Snake River watershed.

Cindy Moyle is a current Board Member, and former Treasurer, of the Fur Commission USA. After the recent leadership shuffling in FCUSA, we felt that the Moyle Mink Ranch would be perfect to test out the efficacy of FCUSA’s new emphasis on farm security. The Moyles are a mink dynasty in Idaho, operating up to eight farms, their own in-house feed operation, and a tannery. Those doubtful of our resourcefulness and guile have in the past called the Moyle farms impenetrable. Indeed, this is the first time that anyone has attempted action against one of them.

Having now had the pleasure of testing them ourselves, we wholeheartedly approve of the new FCUSA security guidelines. We are happy to see FCUSA members increasing their overhead on security – it means they are only that much closer to bankruptcy when we raid their farms. In the case of the Moyles, the breeding records we destroyed represent over thirty years of painstaking genetic selection. There will be no recovering these genetic lines.

Aside from their operations harming helpless animals, the Moyles have also been federally investigated for exploiting undocumented workers and trafficking endangered species. Mike Moyle, ex-mink farmer and the current Idaho House Majority Leader, has used his political position to block Idaho neighborhoods from being able to declare his family’s foul and fly- infested prisons to be public nuisances.

The fur industry will no doubt propagate falsehoods regarding this act of kindness.

They will claim that we are terrorists. We say that if peacefully opening cages is an act of terrorism, then the word has no meaning. It is appropriately applied to the mass imprisonment and killing of wild animals.

They will claim that these mink are domesticated animals and will starve. Documentation on the success of farm-bred mink in the wild is extensive, so we will add only our experience watching these naturally aquatic animals, who had spent their entire lives in cages, head instinctively for water and begin to swim and hunt.

They will claim that conditions on mink farms are humane. We ask why, then, they try only to hide those farms from the public, pushing for legislation to criminalize the taking of photographs. The mink that we freed from the Moyles lived in intensive confinement in their own waste. Their suffering was plain to the eye, and their yearning for freedom plain to the soul.

They will say that our raid may inspire copycat actions. We say that it undoubtedly will. It is a glorious thing that we live in a world where individuals regularly demonstrate the ultimate act of compassion – risking their freedom for the freedom of others.

They will say that we will not stop short of the complete and total end of the killing of animals for their fur. On this point we are in total agreement.

We act with love in our hearts.”
